  So, there's this idea, which you already know: Define the layout of your UI by creating a tree of panels. The leaf nodes on the tree are what we used to call 'controls' way back in the day-- the things that the user interacts with, radio buttons and listboxes and such. The internal nodes are mostly concerned with layout; this kind of panel stacks its child panels vertically, that kind puts its children into a grid, etc. It's COMMON. Most of the UI-generating systems I've seen in the past twenty years are implementations of this, and the ones that aren't borrow from it. What's the word for this idea?

• Inputting cheat codes - hidden keyboard input

  Okay, here's what I want to do - when the player is at the main menu, I want them to be able to type in cheat codes. That's the only place I want it to work. I don't want to give them a text box to type into. Rather, I want them to simply type in a word (let's say "cheat", just for simplicity sake) that activates the cheat code. I only need to capture keyboard input when the window is in focus. What can I do to accomplish this?

  I attended a Microsoft Office and SharePoint 2010 HOL 1 day workshop last week and wanted to setup a VM to try the new features in my own laptop. The presenter in the workshop implicitly mentioned a tool called VirtualBox (because it's not a MS product?) but I have no clue what it is at that moment. Until today, I saw a very useful blog and thanks to Guy and Rolly. • What is the history of why bytes are eight bits?

  What where the historical forces at work, the tradeoffs to make, in deciding to use groups of eight bits as the fundamental unit ? There were machines, once upon a time, using other word sizes, but today for non-eight-bitness you must look to museum pieces, specialized chips for embedded applications, and DSPs. How did the byte evolve out of the chaos and creativity of the early days of computer design? I can imagine that fewer bits would be ineffective for handling enough data to make computing feasible, while too many would have lead to expensive hardware. Were other influences in play? Why did these forces balance out to eight bits? (BTW, if I could time travel, I'd go back to when the "byte" was declared to be 8 bits, and convince everyone to make it 12 bits, bribing them with some early 21st Century trinkets.)

• vlc 1.1.9 not working properly

  I have installed vlc 1.1.9 on wubi installed Ubuntu 11.04 using Ubuntu Software Center. Now when i tried playing videos in vlc (any format) full screen mode doesnt show controls and usually doesnt gets me out to window mode. it sometimes crashes to login screen. I tried the video output to 'X11 output mode' and 'XVideo output (XCB)' but the above problem persists and also bring another problem. full screen mode doesnt responds always when it does, it shows the video over the desktop instead of inside the player. the only way to get ubuntu to function normally is to restart the system. I tried with not using the 'Embed video in interface' but still the same problem. vlc runs perfectly well in windows. How can i make vlc function properly on my system or i need to install another player? My system config is: Graphics: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 2800+ RAM: 1.5GB Motherboard Name: MS-7181 (MSI)

  I lucked out and managed to buy a two word .com EMD for the most important key-phrase for our b2b SaaS startup. Shutting down our branded domain isn't an option, we've already got too much invested in that brand (not in terms of SEO but in terms of other marketing efforts). The brand domain at present hasn't really been optimised for this key-phrase and we haven't invested any effort in SEO to date on that domain, but now we have some resources and want to make a big push for that key-phrase. So what is the best strategy for an EMD when you want already have a branded domain that you don't want to close or have penalised in some way?

• How do I run Microsoft Explorer 8 plus on Ubuntu?

  First off, you should know I'm a Ubuntu newbie who has become passionate since my strangely low-priced Dell computer showed up with Ubuntu loaded on it and it could do almost everything I need from a computer. But now I've got a problem. I know, it's like asking how to use a cassette player on your computer, but in South Korea EVERY website is made to work with exclusively on MS Explorer PLUS Active X, which Microsoft finally killed with 9. Hence, I have to use 8, as there are some Korean sites I need to access for searching, banking, etc. So I see that the way to go is to load PlayOnLinux, but then I it tells me to delete these. Do I really have to do that? Should I just hit "Install Anyway"? Or would that be just asking for trouble?

  I have 35 windows7 standalone computers right now and planning to setup a LAN/workgroup using ubuntu as a server if its a LAN. Purpose for network.. Files from client computers to be accessed by me and vice versa through a shared folder on the server. Files only include word documents and very small project files. The network wont have Internet at the moment. What I would like to know.. How would i configure the ubuntu server to recognize the clients and will the clients be able to view the shared folders through their windows machines simultaneously? Would appreciate feedback. • Check if the vector is behind another or maybe opposite directions?

  I'm doing a network game and on the client side, i interpolate the client position with the server sent extrapolated position. The client has its own physics simulation wich is corrected by the server in steps. The problem is when it laggs and i 'kick' the ball, the server gets a delayed message and sends me the position backwards of the client position wich makes the ball goes back and forth. I want to ignore those and maybe compensate that on the server, not sure though. The problem is the clock difference on those case are 0.07ms or 0.10 ms wich isn't that high to ignore the message i guess. When i get the server position, i extrapolate with the clock interval * serverBallVelocity Can i check if my new ball server position is behind my actual ball vector position? I tried to use the dot product after normalized the two vectors to check if they are opposite but it ain't working properly. Any suggestions on checking that?

  I finished University around 4 years ago double degree in Software Eng/Comp Sci. Got my first job at a startup in my final year, was with them for 2.5 years then started my own business. So far everything is going great, lots of clients and stead work etc, but coming right out of uni and into a start up I never had any form or senior software engineer guiding my work or suggesting improvements etc... Whats the best way for me to improve & learn more? Books? MS Exams? Other? I develop in C#, ASP.NET/MVC. Update The problem isn't really with releasing products, I've released quite a few which are up and running with customers happy. It's more with quality of code, best practices, how do I know something I am code is correct, it may work but there may be ways of coding it much more efficiently or by adhering to some kind of standard Cheers for any responses!   I'd like to apply a global site-wide little javascript window on the very bottom right of the site that will display a window about 40 x 80 wide, just a book icon and the word "Bible", where when a person clicks it, it will open a pop-up window, centered and pull whatever page I give it to display the bible itself (I have it internally already). These little javascript windows auto scroll as you scroll up or down the pages, you've seen them many times. PS: I also want a "hide" option, but it doesn't hide it but minimizes it down to a small icon, all the way to the very bottom right of the site. So, click it opens, click it minimizes. Problem is, I don't know the name of this type of script :) Your help appreciated. Thanks.

• In the world of .Net, managed code and the web is there still a place for VBA?

  Microsoft has moved away from the COM stack, VB6 is so last century and .Net rules the (MS) roost. Yet I find myself still banging out reams of VBA code - for a new project automating Excel seeing as you ask. I've tried to doing the same kind of thing using VSTO and it was just too damn buggy/hard/inefficient with a broken development model. I can't get rid of the feeling that I'm missing something, OTOH I really can't see a better way of solving this problem. What are your thoughts?

I want to write a script that runs on login (windows 7) and fills out the time I come in and such and another that says the time I'm leaving when I log out.   I have a problem with ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my custom tower pc in which the OS hangs at specific points:- - live usb with persistence: hangs when mouse appears. - installed to hard disk: hangs after login, logon sound never plays. i am a relative newbie with linux so any terminal output would not make sense to me :) the pc specs are as follows: - MSI MS-7301 Cuba motherboard - 3GB DDR2 RAM (NOT dual channel) - ATI Radeon HD 5450 gfx card the live usb works fine on all other PC's i tried it on. could any one help me ?
