• Read XML from an XDocument with silverlight

  Hi I have managed to load an XDocument with xml data from this link http://go.yr.no/go/e/main/http://www.yr.no/place/Norway/Telemark/Sauherad/Gvarv/forecast.xml. I am using C# and .Net in Blend and producing a web app (ie some of the normal .Net functions is not included in the silverlight plugin). I have researched this a lot but can not figure out: how to put the "text" in the link node in a string variable and how to all put the "-11" from ? in a array and link it to the "time from"? I think i have to use LINQ, but the stuff on MSDN and other tutorials is confusing and to general. huge thank in advance Regards Arnt I am sorry to ask such novice questions, but i have searched a lot. • Checking if an element is visible in Chrome using Selenium Remote WebDriver

  Is there a cross browser solution to check if an element is visible using WebDriver? The solution for IE and firefox is to cast the object to a RenderedRemoteWebElement and then call the property Displayed. I'm using the following methods to return if a element is visible: /// <summary> /// Check if the control is visible. /// </summary> public bool IsVisible() { IWebElement control = mSelenium.FindElement(mFindBy); return ((RenderedRemoteWebElement)control).Displayed; } The problem is when I run this using Chrome, I get an exception when casting to type RenderedRemoteWebElement, this is not really the problem as I can catch this, but I need to a solution to check if an element is visible in chrome. • Log4net rollingfile appender skipping every other day in asp.net mvc app

  Hi, I've set up some log4net logging on an asp.net mvc application i've had running for a little over a month now. I've set up rolling file (and smtp) appender on it. The application is hit several thousand times a day - alot of actions are logged. On top of these a number of batch jobs are run as part of the application that also write to the log. Now - as i've been occupied with other work, i've not attended to this application much assuming things to be working based on my test setup. Unfortunately i discover that the rolling file appender on my production server seems to be skipping every other day. Ie i have logs : 10/4/2010, 10/4/2010.1, 10/4/2010.2, 12/4/2010, 12/4/2010.1 , 14/4/2010, 14/4/2010.1 etc. Any idea what could be causing this? It is absolutely impossible that there has no action on these odd days for the lifetime of the application. Cheers

  Please refer to the code below, when I "comment in" either of the commented out lines, it causes the error (in IE) of "':' expected". So then is my conclusion correct, that this inability to provide a reference to an object value, as an object key in a string literal; is this strictly an interpreter/parsing issue? • When is it safe to do a Response.Redirect() without throwing an exception?

  I have an intermediary class extending System.Web.UI.Page for all of my pages that require authentication. The class mostly does custom authentication handling. When a user with insufficient access attempts to visit a page, I try to redirect the user back to the login page while preventing any further page events from being executed (ie. Page_load). The first solution that came to mind was the default implementation of Response.Redirect. Of course the downside to this is the possibility of ThreadAbortExceptions being thrown. So my question is this: When (if at all) during the page life cycle is it actually safe to execute Response.Redirect() without ThreadAbortException ever being thrown? public class CustomPage : System.Web.UI.Page { protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) { base.OnInit(e); if (!IsValid()) Response.Redirect("login.aspx", true); } }

• Selecting item from set given distribution

  I have a set of X items such as {blower, mower, stove} and each item has a certain percentage of times it should be selected from the overall set {blower=25%,mower=25%,stove=75%} along with a certain distribution that these items should follow (blower should be selected more at the beginning of selection and stove more at the end). We are given a number of objects to be overall selected (ie 100) and a overall time to do this in (say 100 seconds). I was thinking of using a roulette wheel algorithm where the weights on the wheel are affected by the current distribution as a function of the elapsed time (and the allowed duration) so that simple functions could be used to determine the weight. Are there any common approaches to problems like this that anyone is aware of? Currently i have programmed something similar to this in java using functions such as x^2 (with correct normalization for the weights) to ensure that a good distribution occurs. Other suggestions or common practices would be welcome :-)

On a certain event (Value change) I would like to reRender the entire component tree for one of those components.   I have a table (apples) containing: cid date_am date_pm ---------------------- 1 1 1 2 2 1 3 1 3 1 1 2 I asked a question earlier (badly) about how I would rank the customers in order of the number of ones(1) they had. The solution was (based on one column): SELECT cid, sum( date_pm ) AS No_of_ones FROM apples WHERE date_am =1 GROUP BY cid ORDER BY no_of_ones DESC This works great for one column but how would I do the same for the sum of the two columns. ie. • How to represent a Many-To-Many relationship in XML or other simple file format?

  I have a list management appliaction that stores its data in a many-to-many relationship database. I.E. A note can be in any number of lists, and a list can have any number of notes. I also can export this data to and XML file and import it in another instance of my app for sharing lists between users. However, this is based on a legacy system where the list to note relationship was one-to-many (ideal for XML). Now a note that is in multiple lists is esentially split into two identical rows in the DB and all relation between them is lost. Question: How can I represent this many-to-many relationship in a simple, standard file format? (Preferably XML to maintain backwards compatibility)

• How do I make php page return a 503 error (or anything non-200).

  A former developer wrote or client-server api in PHP. It simply sends messages as xml using post/response in a very simplistic fashion. The problem is that even when there is an error (ex: invalid arguments passed into the server side) we get a HTTP 200 response with a page like this <h4>Unknown error!</h4> In firebug I can see that the actually HTTP response is a 200. How can we send a different response (ie:503) when we programatically detect in our php code that it is appropriate to do so.

  Hi everyone, I have a shell script that creates Firefox profiles and then uses them to open multiple instances of Firefox simultaneously. The problem is how can I open a URL in a particular instance of Firefox? I have tried firefox -CREATEPROFILE test firefox -P 'test' -no-remote firefox -P test -url www.google.ie But the last part which is trying to open the URL using the test profile does not work, it always opens in then default profile. Is there any way to tell Firefox from the command line to open a URL using a particular profile? Thanks.

• MySQL Locks: order of unblocked threads

  I have a MySQL ISAM table being accessed my multiple php instances. Right now I'm using a WRITE lock to serialize access to this table. My question is how do I ensure that the PHP instances get served on a First-Come-First-Serve basis? Or is this the default behaviour? The official MySQL documentation doesn't mention anything about the blocked thread order for threads of the same lock type (ie multiple threads attempting a WRITE LOCK). It only mentions that a WRITER will jump to the front of the waiting queue if READERS are waiting.

  Hello, I wanted to be able to create a effect identical to CSS3 text-shadow Property, making it available to browsers that doesn’t support this CSS3 Property (like IE 7 and 8). And so I found two plugins: Text Shadow and Drop Shadow Effect. I decided to use Text Shadow, because it was released in the end of 2008, and because it was more straightforward. This worked great for IE8. However in IE7 shadows have twice the distance to the text, and links are weird. IE8 image IE7 image I am searching for a fix, or an alternative to this problem.

• Where is the chink in Google Chrome's armor?

  While browsing with Chrome, I noticed that it responds extremely fast (in comparison with IE and Firefox on my laptop) in terms of rendering pages, including JavaScript heavy sites like gmail. This is what googlebook on Chrome has to say tabs are hosted in process rather than thread. compile javascript using V8 engine as opposed to interpreting. Introduce new virtual machine to support javascript heavy apps introduce "hidden class transitions" and apply dynamic optimization to speed up things. Replace inefficient "Conservative garbage colllection" scheme with more precise garbage collection scheme. Introduce their own task scheduler and memory manager to manage the browser environment. All this sounds so familiar, and Microsoft has been doing such things for long time.. Windows os, C++, C# etc compilers, CLR, and so on. So why isn't Microsoft or any other browser vendor taking Chrome's approach? Is there a flaw in Chrome's approach? If not, is the rest of browser vendor community caught unaware with Google's approach?

• Ruby and jQuery -- $(document).ajaxSend() not modifying the params as expected

  I cannot get jquery's ajaxSend (http://api.jquery.com/ajaxSend/) to properly modify the parameters. However, random and _method (both needed for IE issues) do not get set. Logging settings inside ajaxSend shows me that they are set to settings.data: "remote=1&authenticity_token=6GA9R_snip_253D&random=1270584905846&_method=get" but when it gets sent across the wire, I only have the following: authenticity_token 6GA9R_snip_253D remote 1 Why in the world is this not working?

  I have a problem with my form when I try to submit with ajax. I am using Malsup Form plugin for Jquery but also using tinyMCE editor. When I submit the form and check the $_POST array, there is no data from the textarea. I have tried to use the triggerSave() function but to no avail. • How to access Dispatcher in Silverlight tests?

  I am using the SL unit test framework for tests (http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/silverlightut). My code is heavily client-server communications dependant, and I access the GUI dispatcher in several places to make sure important data is only accessed on a single thread (ie. the GUI thread). This dispatcher seems unavailable in the unit tests - I have tried using Deployment.Current.Dispatcher and even created an instance of a blank control to try use its own dispatcher, but both don't work. The code inside of Dispatcher.BeginInvoke() just never executes, even if I include a Thread.Sleep afterwards.

• Sprite background image lags on mouse hover

  I have basic DOM menu that has sprite background images for the first level of "LI"s. It works just fine, but I guess there is some problem and instead of switching the image right away on hover it goes blank and after about a second the hover image "appears" (shifts). That happens only on first hovering. After that it's smooth like it's supposed to be. Refresh the page and there it is again... Frustrating... • ASP.NET Windows authentication with wrong identity over VPN

  I have ASP.NET application with windows authentication. When I browse it from home over VPN (Cisco VPN Client) as a username in the windows identity I get "\" not the credentials from the AD of the server (the same that I am using to connect to the VPN) even though I fill them in the prompt for localhost authentication from the browser. This only happens with Firefox. In the IE and Chrome after the prompt I get 401.1 Unauthorized page from IIS. How to make IIS to use the right credentials or the problem is somewhere else? Any ideas?

  The following javascript opens a pop-up in Firefox, Safari, IE, and Google Chrome: window.open("http://google.com", "foo", "toolbar=yes,location=yes,menubar=yes") However, in Google Chrome the toolbar (with the usual forward and back buttons, etc.) does not appear on the popped-up window. (Tested on both Windows and Mac.) How can I fix this? I would like the user to be able to navigate forward and back using the tools with which they are most familiar. Thanks!

• CSV parser in C++

  All I need is a good CSV file parser for C++. At this point it can really just be a comma-delimited parser (ie don't worry about escaping new lines and commas). The main need is a line-by-line parser that will return a vector for the next line each time the method is called. I found this article which looks quite promising: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/spirit/example/fundamental/list_parser.cpp I've never used Boost's Spirit, but am willing to try it. Is it overkill/bloated or is it fast and efficient? Does anyone have faster algorithms using STL or anything else? Thanks!
