  • Automatically restarting Erlang applications

    I recently ran into a bug where an entire Erlang application died, yielding a log message that looked like this: =INFO REPORT==== 11-Jun-2010::11:07:25 === application: myapp exited: shutdown type: temporary I have no idea what triggered this shutdown, but the real problem I have is that it didn't restart itself. Instead, the now-empty Erlang VM just sat there doing nothing. Now, from the research I've done, it looks like there are other "start types" you can give an application: 'transient' and 'permanent'. If I start a Supervisor within an application, I can tell it to make a particular process transient or permanent, and it will automatically restart it for me. However, according to the documentation, if I make an application transient or permanent, it doesn't restart it when it dies, but rather it kills all the other applications as well. What I really want to do is somehow tell the Erlang VM that a particular application should always be running, and if it goes down, restart it. Is this possible to do? (I'm not talking about implementing a supervisor on top of my application, because then it's a catch 22: what if my supervisor process crashes? I'm looking for some sort of API or setting that I can use to have Erlang monitor and restart my application for me.) Thanks!

  • Creating PHP strings using other variables...works manually, can't figure out how automatically

    Hello, I'm trying to get a variable to be formed automatically using data pulled from a mysql database. I know the data is being pulled from the database in some form resembling its original form, but that data does not act the same as data that is manually typed and assigned to a string. For example, if a cell in a mysql table says... I said "goodbye" before I left. She also said "goodbye." ...and I manually copy/paste it and add the necessary escapes... $string1 = " I said \"goodbye\" before I left. She also said \"goodbye.\" "; ...that does not equal... $string1 = $mysqlResultArray['specificCellWithQuoteShownAbove'] Interestingly, if I echo both versions of $string1 and view the output, they appear to be exactly the same. But they do not function the same when put through various functions I've created. The functions only work if I do the manual copy/paste method--which is not what I want, obviously. I'm not sure if it has to do with the line breaks or the escapes--or some combination of the two. But while both strings are superficially the same, they are apparently functionally different and I don't know why. So how can I create $string1 without manually copy/pasting the contents from the mysql entry and instead querying for the data and assigning it to $string1 in such a way that it's exactly functionally equivalent as the manual copy/pasted string?

  • Automatically Organize Tags in Tax/Folksonomy

    I'm working on a process that will perform natural language processing (NLP) on one--and potentially several--of our content rich sites. What I'd like to do once the NLP is complete is to automatically organize the output (generally a set of terms that you might think of as tags given the prevalence of that metaphor) into some kind of standard or generally accepted organizational structure. In a perfect world, I'd really like this to be crowd sourced under the folksonomy concept (as opposed to a taxonomy) since the ultimate goal is to target/appeal to real people rather than "domain experts", but I'm open to ideas and best practices. For the obvious purpose of scalability, I'd like to automate the population of this tax/folksonomy so that "some guy" in the team/organization isn't responsible for looking at a bunch of words (with or without context) and arbitrarily fleshing out the contextual components of the tree. I have a few ideas for doing this that require some research to establish viability, but I have exactly zero practical experience with this sort of thing so the ideas really just boil down to stuff I made up that might perform some role in accomplishing the task. Imagining that others have vastly more experience with this sort of thing, I'm hoping that I can stand on your shoulders. Thanks for your thoughts and insights.

I would like to wrap pointers to it into a small class B, some kind of smart pointer, with the constraint that a B* is automatically converted to an A* so that I don't need to rewrite the code that already uses A*.     Hi, I have 2 TLF text boxes already placed on my main stage. In the property inspector window I give these the instance names: "txt1" and "txt2". I am trying to have a single mouseup event, and figure out which text box it occurred on. I tried setting the .name property, but it had no effect. In the publish settings, I have "Automatically declare stage instances" checked. Also, is it possible to have a single change event for multiple slider components? The following never fires: root.addEventListener(SliderEvent.CHANGE, sliderChanged,false,0,true); Thanks for any tips

  • Automatically extracting inline XSD from WSDL into XSD file(s)

    I am using a third party Web Service whose definition and implementation are beyond my control. This web service will change in the future. The Web Service should be used to generate an XML file which contains some of the same data (represented by the same XSD types) as the Web Service plus some extra information generated by the program. My approach: create my own XSD referring to the XSD definitions of the WSDL of the called web service (This XSD also includes XSD types for the extra information obviously.) use a Java XML databinding framework (like ADB or JiXB) to generate the databinding classes from my own XSD file from step 1 use a Java SOAP framework (like Axis2 or CXF) with the same databinding framework to generate the databinding classes from the WSDL (This would enable me to use the objects retrieved by the web service directly in the generation of the XML.) The XSD types I am going to use in my own XSD file, but are defined in the WSDL, are subject to change. Whenever they change, I would like to automatically process the XSD and WSDL databinding again. (If the change is significant enough, this might trigger some development effort.(But usually not.)) My problem: In step 1 I need an XSD referring to the same types as used by the Web Service. The WSDL is referring to another WSDL, which is referring to another WSDL etc. Eventually there is an WSDL with the needed inline XSD types. As far as I know there is no way to directly reference the inline XSD types of a WSDL from an XSD. The approach I would think most viable, is to include an extra step in the automatic processing (before the databinding) that extracts the inline XSD from the WSDL into other XSD file(s). These other XSD file(s) can then be referred to by my own XSD file. Things I'd like to avoid: Manually copy pasting the inline XSD into an XSD file (I am looking for an automatic process.) Any manual steps.(Like the determining the WSDL that contains the inline types manually.(The location of that WSDL does change as well.)) Using xsd:any in my own XSD. I would like my own XSD file to be correct. Using a non-Java technology(like .NET) Huge amounts of implementation (but hints on how you would implement such an extraction are welcome anyway) PS: I found some similar questions, but they all had responses like: WTH would you want to do that? That is the reason for my rather large background story.

  • Using Jquery.Form Plugin + MultiFile to automatically upload a single file

    I wanted to find a way to upload a single file*, in the background, have it start automatically after file selection, and not require a flash uploader, so I am trying to use two great mechanisms (jQuery.Form and JQuery MultiFile) together. I haven't succeeded, but I'm pretty sure it's because I'm missing something fundamental. Just using MultiFile, I define the form as follows... <form id="photoForm" action="image.php" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data"> The file input button is defined as... <input id="photoButton" "name="sourceFile" class="photoButton max-1 accept-jpg" type="file"> And the Javascript is... $('#photoButton').MultiFile({ afterFileSelect: function(){ document.getElementById("photoForm").submit(); } }); This works perfectly. As soon as the user selects a single file, MultiFile submits the form to the server. If instead of using MultiFile, as shown above, let's say I include a Submit button along with the JQuery Form plugin defined as follows... var options = { success: respondToUpload }; $('#photoForm').ajaxForm(options); ... this also works perfectly. When the Submit button is clicked, the form is uploaded in the background. What I don't know how to do is get these two to work together. If I use Javascript to submit the form (as shown in the MultiFile example above), the form is submitted but the JQuery.Form function is not called, so the form does not get submitted in the background. I thought that maybe I needed to change the form registration as follows... $('#photoForm').submit(function() { $('#photoForm').ajaxForm(options); }); ...but that didn't solve the problem. The same is true when I tried .ajaxSubmit instead of .ajaxForm. What am I missing? BTW: I know it might sound strange to use MultiFile for single-file uploads, but the idea is that the number of files will be dynamic based on the user's account. So, I'm starting with one but the number changes depending on conditions.

  • Why does Scala apply thunks automatically, sometimes?

    At just after 2:40 in ShadowofCatron's Scala Tutorial 3 video, it's pointed out that the parentheses following the name of a thunk are optional. "Buh?" said my functional programming brain, since the value of a function and the value it evaluates to when applied are completely different things. So I wrote the following to try this out. When I call runThunk(f), no hint is required. But when I 'alias' f to b with a val then apply it, it doesn't work: the evaluation happens in the val; and even lazy val works this way, so it's not the point of evaluation causing this behaviour.   That all leaves me with the question: Why does Scala sometimes automatically apply thunks when evaluating them? Is it, as I suspect, type inference? And if so, shouldn't a type system stay out of the language's semantics? Is this a good idea? Do Scala programmers apply thunks rather than refer to their values so much more often that making the parens optional is better overall? Examples written using Scala 2.8.0RC3, DrScheme 4.0.1 in R5RS.

    I don't understand why the vertical scroll bar moves automatically to the most top position when "Line 9" clicked, for example. Further clicks does not move the scroll bar.   • Drop down select to change a second drop down select automatically

    I have a webpage where I have a form with several areas to input text and two drop down select options countries is the first one and depending in witch country is chosen the second should display the estates for that country to choose. my page connects to my db from where it gets the countries and estates.... I have a table with the country names and one table for each country estates. so all I'm trying to do is making it change the states to choose from automatically depending witch country got selected with out summiting the form since that enters a new entry to another table in my db. I seen that using javascript is the way to go but can't get it to work in my case since I don't want to be sent to another page or summit the form. here is part of my code any help will be greatly appreciated. I had to eject manually the CD/DVD from Ubuntu and then Insert the new CD and only then Ubuntu reads the data in the newly inserted CD/DVD. How can I fix the CD/DVD refresh for the media drive so that Ubuntu 10.10 recognize it automatically?

    Through the normal processes I enter my shared music folder on my Windows computer, i.e.: Places Network Windows pc Music. After rebooting my Ubuntu laptop, however, this connection isn't automatically set again. My question: How do I get Ubuntu to automatically connect to that shared folder after login (while first checking whether the Windows computer is 'online')? This because I added the folder to the Banshee Library, and I currently first have to go to the shared folder manually before Banshee can play the files.

    I'd like to tweak my Conky so it automatically displays the days of the week correctly. So for example, if TODAY were Tuesday, it would look like this: Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday [etc.] And then tomorrow, automatically, it would look like this: Wednesday Thursday Friday [etc.] I know I can get it to display today's date like this: ${time %A} But how do I get it to display tomorrow's date?   • Android ListView with Checkbox: automatically unchecks

    Hi, I've got a ListView with a custom BaseAdapter. The list items contain CheckBoxes that need to represent a property from a database. I use CheckBox.setOnCheckedChangeListener with a new OnCheckedChangeListener to detect changes, so I can change the database based on the current state of the CheckBox. Pretty straightforward stuff so far. However, when scrolling further down the list, previously checked CheckBoxes get unchecked. I suspect this happens as soon as the views are recycled (I'm using the convertView/ViewHolder technique). How can I stop this? What's going wrong? Thanks in advance. Edit: To make things a bit clearer, the problem is that recycling views somehow calls OnCheckedChangeListener#onCheckedChanged(buttonView, isChecked) with isChecked == false.

  • How to automatically resize an EditText widget (with some attributes) in a TableLayout

    Hi everyone, I have a layout issue. What I do is this: create TableLayout in xml with zero children: <TableLayout android:id="@+id/t_layout_contents" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="@id/l_layout_tags" android:stretchColumns="1" android:paddingLeft="5dip" android:paddingRight="5dip" /> Insert first row programmatically in onCreate(): tLayoutContents = (TableLayout)findViewById(R.id.t_layout_contents); NoteElement nr_1 = new NoteElement(this); tLayoutContents.addView(nr_1); Class "NoteElement" extends TableRow. The 1st row just consists of a blank ImageView as a placeholder and an EditText to enter text. NoteElement's constructor looks like this: public NoteElement(Context c) { super(c); this.context = c; defaultText = c.getResources().getString(R.string.create_note_help_text); imageView = new ImageView(context); imageView.setImageResource(android.R.color.transparent); LayoutParams params = new LayoutParams(0); imageView.setLayoutParams(params); addView(imageView); addView(addTextField()); } Method addTextField() specifies the attributes for the EditText widget: private EditText addTextField() { editText = new EditText(context); editText.setImeOptions(EditorInfo.IME_ACTION_DONE); editText.setMinLines(4); editText.setRawInputType(InputType.TYPE_TEXT_FLAG_MULTI_LINE); editText.setHint(R.string.create_note_et_blank_text); editText.setAutoLinkMask(Linkify.ALL); editText.setPadding(5, 0, 0, 0); editText.setGravity(Gravity.TOP); editText.setVerticalScrollBarEnabled(true); LayoutParams params = new LayoutParams(1); editText.setLayoutParams(params); return editText; } So far, so good. But my problem occurs as soon as the available space for the chars is depleted. The EditText does not resize itself but switches to a single line EditText. I am desperatly looking for a way in which the EditText resizes itself in its height dynamically, being dependant on the inserted text length. Does anyone have a hint on this?   • DateTimePicker automatically move to next datepart

    Currently, when using the datetimepicker, after you enter the month you have to either hit the right arrow or the "/" for it to move to the day. Is there a property that I can set or a way to know that the month is done and move to the day and move to the year after the user is done with the day? This is the same behavior with applications written in the old FoxPro/Clipper days.

  • WPF Formatting Issues - Automatically stretching and resizing?

    I'm very new to WPF and XAML. I am trying to design a basic data entry form. I have used a stack panel holding four more stack panels to get the layout I want. Perhaps a grid would be better for this, I am not sure.   • Cheetah with Cherrypy: how to load base templates, and do so automatically on change during developm

    I am working on a cherrypy+cheetah app and would like to improve the development experience. I have everything working when I manually compile templates beforehand. However, during development I'd rather just load the templates every time they are referenced so that I don't need to kill and restart my application. I have a couple of issues I am facing: If I have templates inheriting from base templates, I get import errors (can't find base templates). I think I had this actually working during my experiments, but unfortunately didn't save it and now I can't make it work. Suppose I get 1. working, how do make it so that edits even in base templates get picked up without restart. Below is my sample application that should demonstrate the problems.
