• compiz problems - no effects work, despite the fact that they seem to be properly configured

  I've looked through some posts about compiz and either haven't found the answer, or haven't understood what's been said. Could someone help me out? I installed ubuntu 12.04 through windows 7 (so I can dual boot) and installed compiz and set up the settings I want (hotcorners etc). For a while it seemed like it was going fine, but then I restarted the laptop, none of the compiz settings were working and the auto-launcher wasn't even coming up when I passed cursor over it. The computer is still usable, when I 'dash home' the auto-launcher appears, and I can tab through windows but yeh... the auto-launcher and hotcorners I set up through compiz aren't working at all. Any ideas? Oh, whilst I'm super grateful for any help I can get, I'd really appreciate it if you could keep any instructions as basic as possible. I'm a bit new at this... THANK YOU!

• Several classes need to access the same data, where should the data be declared?

  I have a basic 2D tower defense game in C++. Each map is a separate class which inherits from GameState. The map delegates the logic and drawing code to each object in the game and sets data such as the map path. In pseudo-code the logic section might look something like this: update(): for each creep in creeps: creep.update() for each tower in towers: tower.update() for each missile in missiles: missile.update() The objects (creeps, towers and missiles) are stored in vector-of-pointers. The towers must have access to the vector-of-creeps and the vector-of-missiles to create new missiles and identify targets. The question is: where do I declare the vectors? Should they be members of the Map class, and passed as arguments to the tower.update() function? Or declared globally? Or are there other solutions I'm missing entirely?

• How would you approach developers you don't already know as a developer to offer them a position? [closed]

  We've been trying to find a second developer for the company and have posted job ads online but so far there have been no developers that have been interested, and only a single one that has some experience in Python (that failed a fairly basic practical). It seems like the it's really difficult to find decent people here in Singapore, even reasonable juniors that you can teach. I'm contemplating whether I should go reach out directly to people on Stack Overflow and github and in the hopes that they are interested. I'm thinking I would message the person with only a few sentences, stating the they seems capable from their online presence and that I'd like to work with them. Is this kosher? I know I dislike recruiters and unsolicited mail just as much as the next guy.

• Is it normal for 12.04 to occupy almost 4GB?

  I'm using a ASUS EeePC 901 and have some basic questions/issues. I installed 12.04 on the 4GB drive, selecting the option to erase it before doing so. Immediately after the installation I saw that Update Manager had over 100 updates pending. I attempted to install these, but was told that I had less than 100 MB remaining. Does the OS occupy all the other space? It seems that the best solution is to install 12.04 on the 16GB drive. Is this true? If I do this, what is the best way to erase the 4GB drive afterwards?

  I just got a job as lead developer and I thought it would be best to seek the expertise of my peers (that's you) before proceeding! I had the opportunity to review my designers and they are mostly photoshop pros with dreamweaver as their main HTML/CSS editor. A more visual experience. I, on the other hand, have had much experience hand-writing all my code. From HTML markup to CSS. From my understanding, my designers have basic CSS knowledge and I am considering a simple 101 style set of tutorials for them to get a better grasp of markup before I moved into more advanced topics like accessibility and microformat markup. We need to get started up quickly. Do you think it's okay to dive into LESS from the get-go?

• Help with timebased scoring algorithm

  Im trying to devise an appropriate scoring system for my game. The game in essense has a finite number of tasks to complete (say 20) and the quicker you complete these task, the more points you get. I had devised a basic way of doing this using bands of time multiplied by a score for that band multiplied by the number of tasks solved within that time band i.e. (Time Band) = (Points) 1-5 sec = 15, 5-10 secs = 10, 10-20 secs = 5, 20-30 secs = 3, 40 secs onwards = 1, So for example if I did 3 tasks in the 1-5sec band i'd get 15*3=45points, if i found 10 in the 20-30sec band i'd get 3*10=30 points. Im sure there is a more mathematical way of doing this using powers of some kind but I just can't think how and hoping someone has already done something smilar.. Many thanks in advance

• USB Mouse stutters periodically

  I'm using an HP dv6000 (not sure of exact model) with a pretty basic Logitech wireless laptop mouse. From time to time, the USB mouse will be very stuttery and less responsive. Not all clicks register and the motion is not smooth. It seems like it's related to the notify-osd coming up when I get an IM or Email or whatever else, but it happens other times as well. It's not the whole computer becoming less responsive, because if I use the touch pad during one of these fits, it works perfectly smooth. I've replaced the batteries in the mouse and have tried different USB ports with better line of sight, etc. I can't figure out what's going on. Any thoughts?

  I guess this is trivial and most commonly asked question, but I'd reiterate it again here as I'm not able to find a correct solution. I'm trying to install Ubuntu Cloud setup on VMWare using the package from http://download.ubuntu.com and have this basic installation setup issue as per the below image. file:///cdrom/pool/main/k/klibc/klibc-utils_1.5.25-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb was corrupt The issue is I cannot continue by skipping this as you know this happens to be the most important setup. How can I fix this? Help is sincerely appreciated.

• No analog audio in 13.10

  I've installed 13.10 on a machine that was previously running Windows 8, and audio output isn't working out of the box. It worked fine in Windows, and the speakers work fine when hooked up to a laptop, so it must an incompatibility between Ubuntu and the motherboard. If I go to sound settings, "Built-in Audio" is selected (SPDIF is also available). This is an Intel Z77 motherboard with an integrated Creative CA0132 sound chipset. I've tried booting a live image of 13.10 (to check for a corrupt install), and the same problem exists. If I boot a live image of 13.04, the only audio output listed in sound settings is a "dummy" card. I've already tried basic troubleshooting steps, such as removing pulseaudio config directories, force-restarting alsa, and making sure the speakers aren't muted in the alsa mixer. At this point, I'm totally stumped :(

  I'm using DELL inspiron 5420 (14R 3rd generation), and tried to install ubuntu 10.10, 11.10, 12.04, 12.04.1 but each and every time it doesn't support any of my driver such as network card, wireless driver, video driver and as well as audio and touch-pad driver. audio, video and touch-pad works with their basic functionality but don't work with their full functionality. I'm a new user of ubuntu, and willing to use it permanently. In this condition I tried some solutions from the web but didn't get out from this problem.   I have a software product. it will probably run on VMs that have no network connection at all. I want the user to pay for each VM the user runs. I thought to ask the user for some kind of hardware ID and provide him with serial that is unique for his machine. But user can just copy the VM image and than have two machines running? So I thought of having a security dongle. But how can I prevent user from running two VM's on the same machine both connected to the same dongle? This should be only basic defense so that actual hacking will be required to breach the license and not only spinning one more VM.

• Circular movement - eliminating speed ups near Y = 0

  I have a basic algorithm to rotate an enemy around a 200 unit radius circle with center 0. This is how I'm achieving that: if (position.Y <= 0 && position.X > -200) { position.X -= 2; position.Y = 0 - (float)Math.Sqrt((200 * 200) - (position.X * position.X)); } else { position.X += 2; position.Y = (float)Math.Sqrt((200 * 200) - (position.X * position.X)); } It does work, and I've ensured that at no point does either X or Y equal NaN. However, when Y approaches 0, it seems to go significantly faster. This surprises me, because the Y values are locked to the X, which is being incremented by a steady amount. What can I do to smooth the speed?

But if I do that it just adds a new record when what I want is for it to update the record which has, for example, farmercode = 2, farmername = blaah, and so on. I also want to enter this in the same records as in farmercode = 2 and the corresponding corresponding basic price = ... , everytime i do it it ends up making a new record and not in the existing one.

• Turned off my computer and o it's opened up in grub. How do I tell it to boot into lubuntu?

  It's just a commandline. I have tried my usual trick of sticking a usb with lubuntu in there to see if I can boot from my usb but I get a boot error (I normally wouldn't using that usb). GNU grub version 2.00-7ubuntu11 also just using basic things I know I hits ls then tried boot hd0 but it says: you need to load the kernel first I have no idea how to do this. I looked at the commands and most of them hve obscure names that are not helpful. UPDATE: I hit exit and that allowed be to boot from usb. Hopefully I will be able to find what I need to install to get it booting normally again from there.

  I know lots of startups often go for practical, simple, efficient. So maybe tossing a Ruby program on a basic Apache server. Get some users up and running, etc. Then Ruby starts to not be fast enough, so they throw more servers at the problem? And load balancing or something? And then when stuff gets REALLY crazy, language changes, etc? I'm looking for someone who has cleanly and simply told their own company's story like this. Are there any good ones?

• Distributed cache and improvement

  Have this question from interview: Web Service function given x static HashMap map (singleton created) if (!map.containsKey(x)) { perform some function to retrieve result y map.put(x, y); } return y; The interviewer asked general question such as what is wrong with this distributed cache implementation. Then asked how to improve on it, due to distributed servers will have different cached key pairs in the map. There are simple mistakes to be pointed out about synchronization and key object, but what really startled me was that this guy thinks that moving to database implementation solves the problem that different servers will have different map content, i.e., the situation when value x is not on server A but on server B, therefore redundant data has to be retrieved in server A. Does his thinking make any sense? (As I understand this is the basic cons for distributed cache against database model, seems he does not understand it at all) What is the typical solution for the cache growth issue (weak reference?) and sync issue (do not know which server has the key already cached - use load balancing)?   I'm writing my first 2D game, and I'm writing some tracking logic for the computer enemies. Basic follow-the-player tracking was easy, but ineffectual. Too easy to escape. So I'm trying to implement some more sophisticated flanking and other tactics, and (as expected) it's pretty tricky. This is a topic I know nothing about. I'm going to keep trying, but it'd be awesome to have some examples or tips to work off of. Is there any place that has a decent set of pseudocode AI algorithms, or tips or advice on the subject, e.g. for 2D tracking?
