  Hi, I'm running Windows XP sp3 on my mac using bootcamp. Objective: I'd like to move this partition to a windows machine. This is what I tried: 1. create image using winclone 2. restore drive to disk partition on windows machine using paragon 3. reboot from new partition Results: it attempts to boot in XP (windows flag and progress bar load screen) but then gives me the old BSOD. safe mode just hangs while loading. (I then uninstalled KB977165 on a hunch, but that did nothing to help the issue.) Any ideas, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• the commands ls and get of ftp are not working in vmware

  Hi, Iam using vmware player version 3.1 to boot a minix 3 os image. After booting the minix os I want to get some files from a server using ftp. the ftp connection to the server works but when i use the commands "ls" or "get" nothing happens except it says "200 PORT command successful" and it hanges in there. The only thing i can do after typing ls+enter or get+enter is to exit the ftp by using ctrl+c. If anyone knows a solution to this? please help. Thank you

• Browser-based Operating System

  I have a bunch of touchscreen machines that I want to display a webpage on and have users interact with the webpage via the touchscreen. Right now, this is done with a full-blown OS with a browser set to run at startup. I think maybe the ideal solution is to use a Linux-based OS that boots up, starts X, then starts a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or whatever) in full screen mode. What kind of options do I have? I really want to avoid using a full-blown OS like I do now. It looks unprofessional and takes a while to boot up. I was thinking maybe Chrome OS or something, but I wouldn't know how to set it up for my purposes, since it's still designed to be used as a desktop OS instead of a kiosk-type OS.

  I have the latest Gentoo on an intel mac mini with 945G graphics. I'm trying to start X (with no config) but it complains that /dev/fb0 doesn't exist. I've tried adding the following options to the kernel boot params: video=intelfb:mode=800x600-32@60,accel,hwcursor vga=761 Because I read that the fb might not be enabled unless you set a vga= option. Unfortunately the kernel doesn't recognise that option. If I changed it to vga=ask it presents me a list of about 6 text modes no greater than 80x60. In the kernel I have agpgart, drm (using i830 module) and vga text console compiled in. What am I not doing right ?

• Switching to Linux, Need backup help

  I have an existing Vista installation on my thinkpad x200 and I want to install Linux on my machine. I've done this several times already but I usually format the whole disk and dual boot on Windows and Linux. Which means I have to reinstall and reconfigure everything I had on Windows. What I want to do is backup my windows installation (into an image) and start a clean Linux installation, and run the windows image thru Vmware or Virtualbox. Whats the easiest way to do this? any free tools available? I've seen acronis but dont wanna buy it for a 1 time session only.

  I can not connect to internet by wireless router after some months with ubuntu 10.04. I can connect with the same portable but with win OS. My SO is ubuntu 10.04 linux 2.6.32-41 arch SMP i686. • Cannot ssh anymore into FreeBSD 7.2 home server

  Somehow sshd stopped running and no amount of start, restart or onestart will make it go again. I normally ssh into it from a dual-boot laptop computer that shows up on the network as gabi-buntu when running Ubuntu Karmic, and as gabi-pc when running Windows XP Pro. Neither my Putty connection nor the Linux terminal can establish a ssh link anymore. Upon rebooting the server, I am greeted with "/etc/rc: WARNING: run_rc_command: cannot run /usr/sbin/sshd". In addition, a message will appear saying things like rpc.statd: failed to contact host gabi-buntu RPC: port mapper failure RPC: timed out Everything else works fine. The FreeBSD 7.2 box runs a print server, a Samba server, and an Apache server for the home wiki, via https. It also serves up NFS shares for Linux clients. Any suggestions? Thank you, Gabi Huiber

• Reboot loop after Windows XP Service Pack 3 update

  Recently I upgraded to Service Pack 3, and now it seems that something has gone terribly wrong with the update. After logging in, my computer will blue screen after about 5 minutes and then go into a reboot loop (I don't have the exact error message handy). I have a Sager NP2092 notebook, running an Intel chipset. I'd rather avoid having to reformat my XP, especially with my copy of Windows 7 arriving right around the corner. After doing some Googling, I came across this article: Does your AMD-based computer boot after installing XP SP3? However, it deals with the AMD chips, and specifically states not to use its fix on Intel based systems. EDIT After killing the reboot, this is the error that pops up: STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x8A187118, 0x8A18728C, 0x80604438) EDIT2 I have run Memtest86, and it reported 0 errors.

• Can Windows 7 restore itself from image to a smaller HDD than original?

  I've created a full system image using the built-in Win7 utility, it was from a 300GB drive but there is only about 50GB of data. I then swapped disks in my notebook, the new one being 80GB SSD and now when I boot to the system restore applet, go through all of the settings (finding the backed up image on a network share, confirming that I'm willing to repartition my disk etc.), I get this: The system image restore failed. No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found. [Details] Is this because I'm trying to restore to a smaller disk? (Even though the data should fit without any problems, there being only 50GB of it.)

• CentOS Live CD Creation issues

  I am creating my customized CentOS 6.3 Live CD. I am following information given at https://projects.centos.org/trac/livecd/wiki/GetToolset My "livecd-creator" command completes successfully and an ISO image is created. But when I try to boot up my system with this ISO, it goes up to the CentOS blue screen and then the CAPS lock and Scroll Lock LEDs on the keyboard starts flashing. Then from here after, the system takes no input from keyboard and I have to power cycle it and it does the same thing. Could you get me any suggestion why this is causing and possible workaround. • How to dispose of old rack-mount servers?

  I have two old rack-mount servers lying around that I want to get rid of. One is a HP DL380 G2, the other is an IBM from the same era. Both machines boot up, but I don't have any harddrives for them, or any use for them. Worse yet, both machines appear to have been dropped at some point and the rail kits are bent out of shape and can't be removed, making them unusuable in a rack environment. I'd like to recycle them or dispose of them in some kind of safe manner, but don't really know what my options are. I'm in western Canada. Any suggestions? • Security of BitLocker with no PIN from WinPE?

  Say you have a computer with the system drive encrypted by BitLocker and you're not using a PIN so the computer will boot up unattended. What happens if an attacker boots the system up into the Windows Preinstallation Environment? Will they have access to the encrypted drive? Does it change if you have a TPM vs. using only a USB startup key? What I'm trying to determine is whether the TPM / USB startup key is usable without booting from the original operating system. In other words, if you're using a USB startup key and the machine is rebooted normally then the data would still be protected unless an attacker was able to log in. But what if the hacker just boots the server into a Windows Preinstallation Environment with the USB startup key plugged in? Would they then have access to the data? Or would that require the recovery key? Ideally the recovery key would be required when booted like this, but I haven't seen this documented anywhere.

  I tried searching the Internet, but could not find a decent tutorial explaining how to create a bootable Ubuntu Linux (10.04) USB installation that could be run not only on a PC but also on Macs and MacBook Pros. In addition, I tried refit, but ended with "Missing operating system" error. Here is basically the layout of my bootable under PC Ubuntu USB drive (using MBR): Partition 1 (ext3, bootable) - Ubuntu Linux 32 bit, contains also grub2 bootloader. Partition 2 (ext3) - Ubuntu Linux 64 bit. Partition 3 (fat32) - contains data. What would be the best way to enable this drive to boot under Mac OS X? And if refit has to be used, could I simply have one more partition on the USB drive containing it? Thanks!

I have a few hints to think that it is not: The "Desktop Effects" will not load Apps such as stardock, when attempting to use OpenGL rendering, will display black boxes instead of transparency In the games Pioneers, the number-tile icons are suspiciously just black circles Windows games running with Wine will only support software rendering, not hardware rendering When I boot into a Knoppix LiveCD, the desktop effects do work, splendidly, meaning compiz detects my computer as capable. My problem with troubleshooting is that Canonical has basically eliminated the conf-file-based mechanism of X11 as far as I can tell, thus making it even harder to ensure graphics modules are loading properly. How do I debug and test OpenGL on m Ubuntu 10.04 installation?

• Cannot enter BIOS due to broken screen

  Lately my laptop(hp g42 247sb) screen is damaged, so I hook it up with a external monitor(LG something) and it works fine now. But the only annoying thing is I cannot navigate the BIOS menu for some tweaking because the BIOS not shown on the external monitor,instead, it only shown on the broken laptop screen, and it only output to my external monitor when windwos/os is loged-on. So, is there anyway I can force output during BIOS/BOOT/POST to my external monitor? Things I have done and didn't work: (1)Set my LG monitor as primary display on both window properties and Intel Graphics panel (2)Enter the bios (F10 key) and press the fn+F4 key(change display output). (3)Disable and uninstall my internal screen(broken laptop screen) using device manager and restart, but windows(bios?) install it back on log-on. Please help me!

• 4TB HGST SATA drive only shows 1.62 TB in Windows Server 2012

  I'm using a Supermicro X9SRE-3F motherboard with the latest BIOS and 2x 4TB drives connected to the on-board SATA controller. If I set the BIOS to RAID and create a RAID 1 array, the array shows up in the BIOS as 3.6TB. However when I boot Windows (on a separate RAID 1 array), the 4TB drives show up individually in disk manager as 2x 1.62TB drives. I could use Windows 2012 to set up software RAID 1, but when I set the BIOS back to 2x individual drives, they still show up in Windows as 2x 1.62TB drives. • Windows 7 Wakeup from Sleep then Shutdown

  Is this caused by low battery? I have an Asus UX31A, and I left it unattended. As usual, in 5 minutes, it went to sleep mode with the lid still open. I came back a couple hours later, and I noticed the laptop was off. I was still able to turn it on by manually pressing the power button (battery was at 2% though), but I don't understand why it shut off. If it was in sleep mode and the battery was near depletion, then wouldn't that result in a "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" upon boot? Does Windows have a mechanism to wake from sleep from a super critical battery level to shut down all programs and power down the system completely? I noticed that upon booting, firefox didn't give a fit about improper shutdown. Here are my power settings btw, powercfg -h off has been ran, so hibernation is off. • Win7 backup fails with "The system cannot find the file specified" 0x80070002 - has worked before

  I have a 500 GB USB-disk which has been used as a backup device for a few years now, but now fails without telling me why. This is a Dell box with Intel USB-controllers (so the NVIDEA problem does not apply here). I have previously had problems with a Git package marking a non-existent directory for backup (adding it make the backup succeede). The inaccessible boot partition problem described in Windows Backup fails with 0x80070002: "The system cannot find the file specified" does not apply to me. I would appreciate hints on where to look to identify why my backup fails so I can fix it.

• Start jade via batch script as service on windows server 2012 amazon ec2 instance

  I would like to start the Jade agent platform with a batch script on an windows server ec2 instance as a service. The reason for this is, that I want to start jade automatically at system startup. For creating the service I use nssm. However so far its working fine and the service is created. When I want to start the service I get an error message: Windows could not start the NAME service on Local Computer. The service did not return an error... My batch file contains only one line: java jade.Boot -platform-id P%random% If i execute the script via cmd it works fine. Anybody got an idea why this is not working if I start the batch script as a service?

• Windows 7 just corrupted Microsoft F# and now won't fix itself.

  I lost half a year's worth of custom CGAL/GMP/LEDA/Qt3/Qt4/MPFR/MPFI/Visual Studio/Boost/blahblahblah open source nonsense with DLLs that are scattered in various parts of the OS that I had gotten to finally work. All because F#, which came with .NET 4 and which I never, ever used, is now "corrupted" one day for reasons only Windows 7 knows, and now Windows 7 won't even boot. Of course none--none--of the above setup works as accessed from the USB port. How do I remove a corrupted file that prevents a Windows 7 from booting, or even being fixed by an external CD mount of the Windows 7? Thanks for any help.

• How would you diagnose an integrated network card that doesn't show up on the device list?

  I've been setting up a server based around a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard (G33, PCH9R with integrated Realtek 811B network device. I've enabled it in the BIOS, but it doesn't show up in the pre-boot PCI device list, isn't recognized by Windows (even after installing the chipset and networking drivers) and doesn't even show up via lspci. I've tried cycling power, disabling, cycling again, enabling, cycling again etc. to no avail. I'm sort of at a loss at this point; the board isn't under warranty anymore, but I'd rather not have to replace it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

• Create NTFS symbolic links from within Linux

  Is there a Linux utility that can create NTFS symbolic links? That is, a link on an NTFS partition that points to another NTFS folder - one that will work within Windows 7, specifically. I wish to relocate a folder that is normally in-use while Windows is running. This machine can already dual-boot into Ubuntu, so I'd like to leverage that. • Windows Azure openSUSE: rcnetwork not starting

  I have a Linux VM in Azure, created from their default image. My problem is simply that the init script network doesn't look like to start, so dependent services (apache, postfix...) won't start. If I run yast runlevel and try to start postfix it asks me to start network first: if I accept, network is started without errors and then postfix is started. While network is configured to start on boot, it just doesn't appear to have started. Anyway, SSH connections work fine. Currently, I had to edit my init scripts and remove network from the Required-Start list, but that didn't work for posftix (even after running systemctl --system daemon-reload). How can I fix all this?
