    There's a button in Flash which looks something like a jQuery SplitButton. The Flash button consists of two parts, the text and the icon. [text portion] [v] I have used it to display string search operators for the user: equals, starts with, ends with, contains. In Flash, when the icon is clicked, the text-area drops down a list of choices; it would look like this: [ ] [v] equals starts with ends with contains And when the user makes a choice from the list, the choice is displayed in the text area of the button and the list rolls up. [ starts with ] [v] I'm trying to convert my Flash app and am hoping to come up with a counterpart to this functionality. For space considerations on the form, a radio-button-group would be less than ideal. That's the major virtue of this Flash button -- it's very economical in its use of screen real-estate.   • How do I overflow text to the left in a table?

    I have a table with fixed layout. On overflow, the contents of cells should clip from the left instead of the right. That is, if the width of the TD is less than the width of the text, the cell below should display "67890" instead of "12345". This needs to work in IE7+ at minimum.   • PHP cURL loading delay

    Hello. My problem is, I need to cURL-load a page that uses Ajax-based search, to get results of that search. And I need to organize a delay between curl_exec() and value returning. In other words, I need to execute curl_exec() for no less than 5 seconds. sleep() seems to stop curl execution and does not work. Will greatly appreciate any hint or clue UPD I don't know how, but on this page http://vkontakte.ru/gsearch.php?section=video&q=sample&name=1, but it requires an account to access curl DOES capture the search made by ajax. But if page tooks too long to load, Ajax returns "action was too fast" error. So I just need to prolong curl execution. Sorry if being unclear.

    I read that SQL Server 2008 Express R2 database size limit has increased to 10G. That's good news. Can I use the Express edition of SQL Server to offer web hosting services to the public? Microsoft should be best in answering this but I can't find a clear answer on their site. I am also seeing several Windows web hosting plans include SQL Server as a total package for less than $5/month. I am wondering how they can afford to offer this.

  • Conversion of Single to two UInt16 values in .net

    In the good old days of C. I could cast a float to an int (assuming 32 bit system), do some bit manipluation ( bitwise and, right shift, ect ), and get the upper and lower 16 bit hex representations of the floating point number, which I could then store in two short values. I'm not seeing an easy way of doing this in C#. System.Convert.ToUInt16 just does a float to int convert (even after I shift right), which leaves a vlaue of 0 if the float is less than 0, which is not the desired effect. //useless leaves me witg a value 0f 0 UIN16 s1 = (UInt16)((System.Convert.ToUInt32(d2) & 0xffff0000) >> 16); //capture the high word UInt16 s2 = (UInt16)(System.Convert.ToUInt32(d2) & 0xffff); //capture the low word A basic cast (UInt32) doesn't work either.

He had a job interview today at a small business and during the interview, the prospective boss asked him how he assures that he's alawys up-to-date concerning technical questions and what he's doing to seek for a solution for a problem he can't solve by its own. Besides some magazines, journals, books and blogs my friend also mentioned stackoverflow. The prospective boss seems very interested about that and asked him if he could tell him his username. It appears that was the most difficult during the whole interview ;) Would you tell your prospective boss your username? An the pro side one can mention that the boss sees that you're very involved in your business and community but on the other hand it is a really private thing and you cant post anymore in thread like "what was the worst working environment?" My friend circumnaviagted this question by a rather lame answer (more or less: i use autologin, thats why i have to check the username later at home, ill maybe send you an email)

    I'm trying to represent a function that takes no arguments and returns no value (I'm simulating the setTimeout function in JavaScript, if you must know.) case class Scheduled(time : Int, callback : => Unit) doesn't compile, saying " `val' parameters may not be call-by-name" case class Scheduled(time : Int, callback : () => Unit) compiles, but has to be invoked strangely, instead of Scheduled(40, { println("x") } ) I have to do this Scheduled(40, { () => println("x") } ) What also works is class Scheduled(time : Int, callback : Unit => Unit) but is invoked in an even-less-sensible way Scheduled(40, { x : Unit => println("x") } ) (What would a variable of type Unit be?) What I want of course is a constructor that can be invoke the way I would invoke it if it were an ordinary function: Scheduled(40, println("x") ) Give baby his bottle!

    Given a list of (say) songs, what's the best way to determine their relative "popularity"? My first thought is to use Google Trends. This list of songs: Subterranean Homesick Blues Empire State of Mind California Gurls produces the following Google Trends report: (to find out what's popular now, I restricted the report to the last 30 days) Empire State of Mind is marginally more popular than California Gurls, and Subterranean Homesick Blues is far less popular than either. So this works pretty well, but what happens when your list is 100 or 1000 songs long? Google Trends only allows you to compare 5 terms at once, so absent a huge round-robin, what's the right approach? Another option is to just do a Google Search for each song and see which has the most results, but this doesn't really measure the same thing

    Do search engines treat the alt text of an image placed within an h1 tag the same way they would treat regular text placed in an h1 tag? I gave a search through here looking for an answer to this question, but was only able to find information on image replacement and the infamous h1 debate. For example would: <h1><img src="#" alt="Contact Us" /></h1> Act the same as: <h1>Contact Us</h1> In the electronic eye of a search engine? This seems considerably less "CSS Hacky" than other image replacement techniques like negative text indents, display:none, height:0, or ridiculous z-index integers.

Obj1 - Color - shape - size - price - ranking So I want to be able to predict what combination of color/shape/size/price is a good combination to get high ranking. Or even a combination could work like for eg: in order to get good ranking, the alg predicts best performance for this color and this shape. Something like that. What are the advisable algorithms for such a prediction? Also may be if you can briefly explain how I can approach towards the model building I would really appreciate it. Say for eg: my data looks like Blue pentagon small $50.00 #5 Red Squre large $30.00 #3 So what is a useful prediction model that I should look at? What algorithm should I try to predict like say highest weightage is for price followed by color and then size. What if I wanted to predict in combinations like a Red small shape is less likely to higher rank compared to pink small shape . (In essence trying to combine more than one nominal values column to make the prediction)

  • Beginners PHP / mySQL question

    I'm brand new to PHP & MySQL, and one function I'm creating needs to access a large table or database. I've created the database and it's currently in a MySQL table, which I'm accessing with no problem. The table is 11,000 rows in length, with 8 columns (all text less than 8 characters long) - it's static, and will never change. Without getting too particular, my users will hit a button which will trigger scripts to access the data, say 500 times or more. So in general would it be better practice to include all of this data in a big 'switch' or 'if... then' conditional right in my scripts, rather than opening and accessing the database connection hundreds, or maybe even thousands of times? It just seems like that might be a bottleneck waiting to happen. Thanks!

    First off, I'm sorry if this shows no code which is not what Stack Overflow is about..But I have no clue where to go on this. I have a basic CMS I made, and I am trying to distribute it. I want to make it so that upon going to /cms/install for example, they set the database info, and different info to integrate into the CMS. Now my issue is, what would be the best method to allow the user to store that database info? A cookie seems to not be the right way..Could I store database info inside of a database? Not too sure where to go on this. More or less. What is the best way to temporarily store the database information the user gave before arrival of the full CMS.

    I know how to serialize an object to JSON in ASP.NET Ajax, but I'm trying to do things on the client in a less Microsoft-specific way. I'm using jQuery. Is there a "standard" way to do this? I need to emulate a ternary operator in such a way that the tokens leading up to '?' remain intact. e.g. convert the expression c ? p : q to c something. The simple if(c) p else q fails my criteria, as it requires putting if( before c. My first attempt (still using c/p/q as above) is c match { case(true) = p; case _ = q } another option I found was: class ternary(val g: Boolean = Any) { def |: (b:Boolean) = g(b) } implicit def autoTernary (g: Boolean = Any): ternary = new ternary(g) which allows me to write: c |: { b: Boolean = if(b) p else q } I like the overall look of the second option, but is there a way to make it less verbose?   • What is an alternative to eval in this situation?

    Many of my view functions do similar things. For the most part, they reverse to a different views upon clicking a button / a text link. So I wrote a helper function render_reverse def render_reverse(f, args): # args are all string type return eval('reverse(' + f + ', ' + args + ')' ) eval is a bad practice, and is pretty slow. It takes 3 seconds to start redirecting, whereas calling reverse directly takes less than 1 second to start redirecting. What alternative do I have? By the way, the function above doesn't work properly. I was modelling after this line (which works) eval('reverse("homepage", args=["abcdefg"])') Thanks.

I learned programming with Java and now I'm developing in Java for more or less 5 years (at the university) and I thinks my programming skills their are really ok/average. I have also small experience in C/C++ and C#. Now I have some spare time and I'd like to learn a new language or deepen the knowledge of Java/C/C++. But how to choose the right language to learn? I'd like to learn a language which will be usefull in the future concerning working in a software development business?     Hi, For some time I tried implementing the scattering model described in this paper: Salama Paper The BRDF part of this paper is pretty clear and straightforward. Where I am hanging is the scattering part. When scattering at the first hitpoint once only, I'm just not getting the same results as proposed by the images in the very same paper. Of course I'm scattering multiply rays inside the proposed scattering cone and averaging the results of the different rays. Does anyone have more or less concrete ideas on the implementation of this nice and beautiful illustrative rendering method. I am glad and thankful for any hints.

  • CouchDB: How to change view function via javascript?

    Hello Guys, I am playing around with CouchDB to test if it is "possible" [1] to store scientific data (simulated and experimental raw data + metadata). A big pro is the schema-less approach of CouchDB: we have to be very flexible with the metadata, as the set of parameters changes very often. Up to now I have some code to feed raw data, plots (both as attachments), and hierarchical metadata (as JSON) into CouchDB documents, and have written some prototype Javascript for filtering and showing. But the filtering is done on the client side (a.k.a. browser): The map function simply returns everything. How could I change the (or push a second) map function of a specific _design-document with simple browser-JS? I do not think that a temporary view would yield any performance gain...
