• High shmmax value in Redhat 6.3

  We are using Redhat 6.3 with 30G RAM to host our Postgres server. The (default) shmmax value is 68,719,476,736 In some forums I have read that having an shmmax value larger than the RAM causes extensive paging, but in the Redhat forums it warns against changing a kernel parameter that is already configured to a value larger than the minimum requirements for an environment. In ServerFault I've read that this probably has no impact. So is there any impact of having shmmax value RAM in a DB server, or the kernel understands this and handles it appropriately? Thanks

• vps running out of memory, 200MB free

  At the beginning of this year I took a VPS for my website because I was running against the resource limits from a shared hosting. Here are the things I know: 2GB memory, with 1GB swap Debian X64 server ED installed Software running on the webserver: mysql apache postfix pop3 imap amavisd clamd cron fail2ban munin-node pure-ftpd spamd nginx Now for the setup: Nginx listens on port 80 and handles the static files, the php side is done by apache2 running mod_php in combi with apc(no var caching!). Iam using a pretty 'busy' drupal and phpbb stack on the server, for drupal iam using boost and authcache to handle of the server load with a pressflow stack. phpbb is just phpbb3 with some mods installed, but has at max 30 users online at a time.. The problem is that its staring to use the swap after a few days after a reboot and thus the site becomes slower. I'v added pictures of monit and munin, so maybe somebody can help me out... • CoovaAP router does not get DHCP settings from modem

  Im having some serious trouble making CoovaAP-powered router get network settings from modem. Wireless router works in captive portal mode (so it handles user login on the same device). But DNS settings and connection ip (for router) are not set as they supposed to via DHCP on modem. It makes installation in other location really complicated, because you have to go and set everything manually. For now i use google`s dns servers. What`s the way to make router self-configurable via modem's dhcp ?

• Server Backup Solutions - compiling?

  I've been researching backup solutions for a LAMP environment to backup our databases and files alike. I'm looking for open source with a UI (so I'm less likely to screw it up). I downloaded http://www.bacula.org/en/ and a few others but they all talk about compiling first.... this doesn't seem like something I should need to do.... is there a linux package that maybe handles backups that I don't know about? I should also specify I'm looking to setup a backup server which backs up from several locations.

• FreeBSD 9 (amd64) reboot/shutdown process is very slow

  I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 III with FreeBSD 9 (amd64), the server uses mfi wich handles a raid10, I had to reboot the server, but notice that either when rebooting or shutting down the server, something is going wrong, besides taking to much time to reboot/shutdown, after rebooting I notice that that some ldap instances within some jails could'nt start and this was because the database was corrupted. This make me think that probably something was wrong with the disks or mfi card, but checking the disk array / logs everything seems to be working fine. My set up is something like this: Host server has the minimum base of FreeBSD 9 amd64, within I create some jails, the ones contain services like mysql, email, and some others ldap. With FreeBSD 7 and 8 I didn't notice this behavior but with FreeBSD 9 something is not working well. I did a clean installation of FreeBSD 9 and root filesystem is using ZFS. • Web Development - How to access custom host, defined in my hosts file, from another device in the same network

  Ok, I hope i'll be able to explain the issue im experiencing. I'm working on a project, that has 2 parts: one takes all requests from usual localhost, the other handles requests from myhost.local. While trying to access both addresses from my computer, it works ok. But now i need to test myhost.local on mobile devices, connected to the same network. Usually i would just run server from my computer ip in the network: python manage.py runserver 10.0.0.8:8000 And then from any device, going to 10.0.0.8:8000 would show the project im working on. However, now accessing that ip address routes me straight to localhost. So, my question is how to access myhost.local from another device in same network? I don't want to change router settings, if that can be avoided, cos sometimes i work from places where i can't access router admin. Is there any network settings on my computer, that i can change to fix the routing to myhost.local w.o losing access to localhost as well?

  I've got a Windows Server 08 box on SP1 that is having some problems. We've experienced backup problems and I've traced it down to VSS Writers not responding. From the command line, if I type vssadmin list providers, I get Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0' Provider type: System Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5} Version: 1.0.0.7 If I type vssadmin list writers, I get this vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp. Waiting for responses. These may be delayed if a shadow copy is being prepared. I could wait this out for hours and it won't move. I looked up how Server 2008 handles VSS writers, and you can't reregister them like you could in Server 2003 http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsserver2008r2general/thread/062cc52c-899b-45f3-8d0c-798b92363f41 Does anyone know how to fix something like this or where to turn next?

• SSD on Vmware ESXI 4 (TRIM? Good Idea?)

  Hi, I just posted about finding bottle necks and have narrowed it down to having way too many VMs on my machine on one 15K SAS drive. I have plenty of cores and plenty of ram. So I am planning on putting 6 VMs on one drive (so 5 drives for 30 VMs). I am thinking of using a 60GB Vertex 2 SSD. Each of my VMs will only need about 6GB of HDD space so this isn't a big deal. My questions are: does ESXI support Trim and do I really need it if I leave 25% of the drive as free space? If I need it should I get a diff drive that handles garbage collection differently? I have a RAID controller w/ write caching. I will still benefit from this? Will this effect my setup differently? Is there anything I need to consider regarding SSD's in virtualized environments.   PAM version - pam-0.79 Is setting 0 allowed on "remember" option in /etc/pam.d/common-passwd file of pam.d module to disable passwd history feature? With "remember=0" in /etc/pam.d/common-passwd file, I am observing a memfault when running the passwd command as a USER. When browsed the source, the function in _set_ctrl in support.c file of pam_unix module handles wrong values of remember, but currently its not robust enough to handle 0, which is a wrong value. So the valid and only option to disable history feature, is to not include the "remember" option in /etc/pam.d/common-passwd file and not to set-up /etc/security/opasswd file? • What is the best time to schedule regular updates on inhouse production server?

  Given an inhouse server running in production mode I would like to keep the impact on the users as low as possible when deploying regular updates (to the server itself, not the user machines .. but that would be a pretty similar problem). The obvious answer to my question is "at night, when the users are at home". But "night" is a long period of time. Should one start early in the evening to perhaps catch problems with the update early on and be ready to rollback? Or is it better to start early in the morning and use the first users as "guinea pigs" to faster trigger the problems? Or in the middle of the night when the concentration of the one overseeing the update is pretty low but it is guaranteed to have no open file handles of some late working users? Are there any research papers on the topic?

• How to download big file with chrome on Mac OSX?

  If I try to download a big file on unstable connection/server (XCode 4) Google chrome simply "stops" downloading on first network error so I have a first 1-2-3 gigabytes of file and chrome thinks that download is finished. Unfortunately, I need to download an entire file, so I need a more advanced download tool like a wget. But there comes a problem: most URL's currently on the web is not a direct URL but multiple "redicrect" pages that utilize complex javascript in order to generate next url and redirect browser to it. Chrome handles such things ok, but if I try to supply such URL to wget it will download some "intermediate" page as a file - not a file itself but an HTML page with complex redirect javascript. is it any way to get a direct URL from chrome or to somehow discover it so I can use it with wget? Maybe it's some avanced download manager integrated in chrome that I just need to install? I use MacOS X 10.6.6 and latest Google chrome.

• Running Tomcat 7 and Apache 2 on the same server

  Part of my site needs to run over HTTPS and I'm creating a sub-domain for that part. I have apache httpd 2 AND Tomcat 7 running on the same server with the same IP, Apache is on port 80 of course, while Tomcat is running on port 8080. Right now I am doing domain forwarding for requests that need to run off tomcat. For example, mathteamhosting.com/mathApp can forward to mathteamhosting.com:8080/mathApp. I would like to have Tomcat handle the https requests for that subdomain. I don't think this forwarding technique can work in this case. How do I set that up so that Tomcat receives the requests on port 443 while apache handles port 80. To be more specific: http://proctinator.com == request goes to Apache web server https://private.proctinator.com == request goes to Apache web server

• How to limit server to specific IP addresses with mod_authz_host?

  Hi! I am very new to this area, so please bear with me. :) Right now I am running an Apache HTTP server on my setup, a very basic configuration. The website hosted on it is accessible from anywhere, and I want to limit the access to a specific IP address range. I've looked into this and I found that one Apache module called mod_authz_host handles this. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_authz_host.html The problem is, I haven't managed to find documentation that explains well how to actually do the stuff. How do I actually make sure only a certain range of IP addresses can access my site/server? The machine is running Ubuntu Server 10.10, the web files are stored in /var/www/, the apache2 daemon has its stuff stored in /etc/apache2/ and /usr/lib/apache2/modules/*. • How to reformat reStructuredText?

  I'm writing reST in vim, which handles line breaks for me (after 80 chars). However, since I frequently go back and edit the text before, lines get ugly again. For example, in tables, it's sometimes annoying to re-format a complete table just because you need a line break in some place. So I wish I had a program that reads my ugly-but-correct reStructuredText and outputs it nicely formatted and wrapped. I found that pandoc in.rst -w rst mostly works, but it has some drawbacks. For example :author: John Doe becomes author John Doe and title formatting is changed as well. Sadly, there seems to be no rst2rst or something similar. Does anyone have some advice?

• Restart an in-use NFS server without interruption (within timeout)

  I have a bunch of compute clients working on jobs, saving output data to a NAS machine. All machines are centos 6.2. They mount it via automount NFS, with a timeout of 1200 (default config). The NAS machine needs to be restarted. If I can restart the machine within that 1200s (20 minute) window, will the clients just block on IO until it comes back up? A minor interruption (pause) in service is ok, as long as it doesn't cause the running processes to error out. If necessary I could loop through and SIGSTOP all job processes, restart and resume them -- I just don't want to break the open file handles. How can I run a restart like this without killing processes with open files?

• Long domain lookup on .dev domain inside vmware

  I'm developing on my macbook and normally I have a local running webserver which just works finde. Now I have to use a vmware image where the webserver is running. I set up everything and my dev site is running under site.dev inside vmware. I can connect to the webserver but EVERY request takes a very long time. I already red that this is related with iIPv6 and the way OSX handles /etc/hosts. There I added 192.168.155.42 site.dev and I already did this (Resolving to virtual host very slow on Mac OS X Lion) but my lookup still takes ~30seconds on every request. What can I do to fix this issue?

  I like to team NICs on my servers. Since most workstations are giga-bit anymore I want to provide my servers a bit more bandwidth. I've read various things that say I am/am not supposed to bond the ports on the switch. I see benefit in doing it as I'm not sure how the switch ARP table handles the same MAC address on multiple ports. Suggestions on the "ideal" way to do it? So far, the redirection has worked perfectly when I ignore usage of the period character. • unlock database files when SQL server is idle

  In my development/test environment on my laptop, I can't back up the SQL server database files because the file handles are kept permanently open by SQL server (VSS doesn't work because the drive is truecrypted) I was hoping there may be some setting in SQL server that can make it unlock the data files after a certain period of inactivity and automatically open them again on demand, but I can't find anything. I don't really want to be dumping the database out every night because it's only a development environment. apart from stopping sql server before I do the backup is there any other solution?

• Seeking easy to use Setup creator with logic and ability to write registry keys

  I want to create a Setup to install my application. It as to be able to do the following: ask a question (maybe 2 radio buttons?) and, depending on the reply, copy one of 2 DLLs to the Windows directory and invoke regsvr to register the DLL write some registry keys I would code my own program to do this, but I don't have enough knowledge of the different versions of Windows (XP, Vista, 7, etc) and 32/64 bit, registry layout, or permissions like UAC, etc So, it seems to me that it would be easier to use a Setup generator which has been around for a while and already handles all of this stuff. I went to my favorite site for free stuff and found this page. However, the programs mentioned there are either too simplistic or have too steep a learning curve for me. Can anyone recommend a Goldilocks solution which does what I mentioned in those two bullet points while taking into account all Windows versions, 32/64 bit, non-admin accounts, etc?

• TCP Sessions and IP Changes

  What happens to a TCP session when the IP of a client changes? I did a simple test of having netcat listen on a port, and connecting to that port from a client machine. I then changed the IP of the client while that nc session was open and sent some data, no data was received by server after changing the IP. I know they are different layers, but does TCP use IPs for part of how it distinguishes sessions? Does my example not work because of how the application handles it, or is this not working because of something happening at TCP/IP/Ethernet layers? Does this depend on the OS implementation? ( I am most interested in Linux at the moment)

• Register a domain with NIC

  I recently bought a .es domain for the purpose of creating a domain hack. I registered the domain with esreg.com (SANE Systems, apparently). My card was charged, but the domain is listed as not registered. I have not yet been able to get in contact with them. Their website seems to have a small form to register the site and to specify the nameservers, but when I fill it out it says "You have to specify the NIC handles first." I don't know how to get those. They have for example a box that says "Owner" with an example of SK86-ESNIC-F4. I have another website so I may have this information, but I don't know how to get it.

• Measuring custom statistics with sar

  I have a server application which I think is leaking file handles. I want to track the usage of file descriptors over time on my Linux (ubuntu) server. I've figured out that I can track the number of file descriptors in use by a process with lsof -p `pgrep the-process-name` | wc -l Since I'm already using sysstat and sar to track various metrics, I thought it'd be nice to display with sar. I want to measure this every 10 minutes. Is it possible to add a custom metric to sar? Then I can easily report it out. If not, I'll write a simple cron job to collect this data and store it separately in a log file.

• Why would an ext3 filsystem be rolled back on a Debian VM running in VirtualBox after loss of power to the host

  A Debian Virtual machine runs as a Guest VirtualBox VM. It's filesystem is EXT3. The host system loses power and after booting up the host system and guest VM, I find that the VM's filesystem has been rolled back to a previous state, losing changes made to the filesystem some time before losing power. The operations that were rolled back had been fully completed before the loss of power (files fully copied, file handles closed, etc.), but it's possible and even likely that other write operations were occuring on the VM at the point of the crash. So I am trying to figure out if it's the filesystem recovery process that rolls back filesystem operations after encountering corruption post power loss, or is it possibly related to VirtualBox and the way it ignores flush requests for performance gains by default (discussed here) Are there any other factors that would result in the filesystem being rolled back after losing power?
