• Outlook 2003: authentication before sending doesn’t work (probably command sequence problem)

  hi, i'm having problems with outlook 2003 + smtp authentication. although it's set in outlook, my mailserver won't relay - which means, outlook is trying to mail BEFORE authenticating. i've tried the same with thunderbird, auth + sending works without problems. so it definately must be something in outlook and it's command-sequence - what could be wrong? thx

• Outlook 2010 Error

  I'm running Outlook 2010 SP1 on Windows 7 x64 SP1, and I'm getting an error message saying "Your Microsoft Exchange administrator has blocked the version of Outlook that you are using. Contact your administrator for assistance." I'm still able to log into my account using Outlook Web Access (OWA), so I know that my account is working just fine. Outlook 2010 with Service Pack 1 is the standard for Windows 7 client systems at this organization, and other people are able to access their e-mail just fine. When my account was initially configured, I was able to use Outlook for a couple of days, and then it suddenly stopped working, providing only the above error message. Do you have any ideas on what I should look into to resolve this problem? Is there any information I can obtain on the client side that will help the Exchange folks investigate the issue further? Is there any verbose logging I can enable, or diagnostic logging in Outlook? Cheers

  Hello everyone I am using microsoft exchange 2003 on windows 2003 small business server. For the past month or so, the archiver account has been receiving multiple copies (about 15 or so) of each and every email. edit: All copies share the same Message ID. The machine that hosts exchange is updated religiously and an antivirus scan is run on a daily basis. So would anyone please have any ideas about how to deal with this and furthermore, how i would be able to delete the multiple copies of emails from outlook 2003 inbox. • Random DNS Client Issue with BIND9/Windows Server 2003 DNS

  Within our office, we have a local server running DNS, for internal related "domains", (e.g. .internal, .office, .lan, .vpn, etc.). Randomly, only the hosts configured with those extensions will stop resolving on the Windows-based workstations. Sometimes it'll work for a couple weeks without issue on one machine, then suddenly stop working, or it'll happen on another 15 times per day. It's completely random for all workstations. When troubleshooting, I have opened up a command prompt, and issued various nslookup commands for some of these hosts, and they resolve, however I've been told that nslookup uses different "libraries" for name resolution than other applications such as web browsers, email clients, etc. The only solution thus far, is manually restarting the Windows DNS Client on each workstation when this happens. Issuing the ipconfig /flushdns command multiple times helps every now and then, but is not successful enough to even attempt before restarting the DNS Client. I have tried two different DNS servers; BIND9, and Windows Server 2003 R2 DNS, and the behavior is the same. We have a single Netgear JGS524 switch all workstations and servers are connected to within the office, and a Linksys SR224G switch in another department with workstations attached.

• Deploying an MVC 2.0 .Net 4.0 application to Windows Server 2003

  I've spent the past couple of nights on this, and have come to the conclusions that I'm doing something wrong! Basically, I have my .Net 4.0 MVC 2.0 application deployed to my 2003 Server and it's constantly giving me the following error: The value for the 'compilerVersion' attribute in the provider options must be 'v4.0' or later if you are compiling for version 4.0 or later of the .NET Framework. To compile this Web application for version 3.5 or earlier of the .NET Framework, remove the 'targetFramework' attribute from the element of the Web.config file. I also have the .Net 3.5 MVC 1.0 application also deployed to the same server (from before the upgrade to .Net 4.0), and it works absolutely fine. I have re-run through Phil Haack's post on IIS6, making the necessary changes for .Net 4.0, but no luck. I have been through the steps in the British Developer's post too, but no joy. I have also tried the steps outlined in Johan's blog post, but the settings he mentions were already enabled. Obviously, I can't simply upgrade to a 2008 box, nor do I want to downgrade my software back to < 4.0 - any other ideas?

• Strange behaviour using Drag and Drop in word 2003 automation in headers

  Hi! I am developing a template based addin for Word 2003 which allows the user to drag and drop elements from a listbox into the word document. Unfortunately I'm getting a really strange behaviour when trying to drop elements in the document's header. Open the template and type something in the header Close the header and insert some content on the page Add a page break. Switch to page layout mode where and set zoom level to "Two Pages" Open the header Slowly Drag and Drop an list item from the list box to the header. See multiple Page Setups dialogs occur which cause Word to crash. Here is my code: // in ThisDocument.cs public MyUserControl _control; public void Init() { _control = new MyUserControl(); ActionsPane.Controls.Add(_control); ActionsPane.Visible = true; } // in MyUserControl.cs public void listBox1_MouseDown(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { DoDragDrop("something", DragDropEffects.Copy); } Have I done somethinkg wrong with implementing Drag and Drop?   Hi: I am trying to implement a UDF using Excel COM Add-in(2003) with Visual Studio 2005 in C#. I would like to implement the UDF using async programming. The UDF is a slow operation as its results are fetched from a server. As an illustration(not a real world example),the following UDF works fine without any issue: public double mul(double number1, double number2) { return number1 * number2; } How can I do the same functionality in an async way: For example, I would like the UDF return immediately and later when the results are available from a server, I would like to update the desired cells. // This method returns immediately. public object mul(double number1, double number2) { return "calculating"; } // This method of a worker thread will update the results. public OnResultsAvailable(object result) { // Question: how should I update the cells that triggerred the calcualtions above? } Constraints: I cannot use Excel RTD as I have to work with existing codebase written using Excel C# COM Add-in. • Giving writing permissions for IIS user at Windows 2003 Server

  I am running a website over Windows 2003 Server and IIS6 and I am having problems to write or delete files in some temporary folder obtaining this kind of warmings: Warning: unlink(C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\cakephp\app\tmp\cache\persistent\myapp_cake_core_cake_): Permission denied in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\cakephp\lib\Cake\Cache\Engine\FileEngine.php on line 254 I went to the tmp directory and at the properties I gave the IIS User the following permissions: Read & Execute List folder Contents Read And it still showing the same warnings. When I am on the properties window, if I click on Advanced the IIS username appears twice. One with Allow type and read & execute permissions and the other with Deny type and Special permissions. My question is: Should I give this user not only the Read & Execute permissions but also this ones?: Create Attributes Create Files/ Write Data Create Folders/ Append Data Delete Subfolders and Files Delete They are available to select if I Click on the edit button over the username. Wouldn't I be opening a security hole if I do this? Otherwise, how can I do to read and delete the files my website uses? Thanks.

• Executing a process in windows server 2003 and ii6 from code - permissions error

  I have a problem executing a process from our testing server. On my localhost using windows XP and iis5.1 I changed the machine.config file to have the line - I then changed the login for iis to log on as local system account and allow server to interact with desktop. This fixed my problem executing a process from code in xp. When using the same method on windows server 2003 (using iis6 isolation mode) the process does not get executed. • HTML5 Drag and Drop styles not displaying on Windows Server 2003

  I'm working on a file upload utility based on Valum's Ajax-Uploader. The idea is similar to the Gmail attachment process. The user should be able to drag a file from the desktop into the browser window and onto the file upload area to get it to upload. This works fine in the browsers that support this functionality (Firefox 3.6+, Chrome 7+). The problem I'm running into are the styles that should be re-drawn when the user: Drags the file anywhere in the browser Drags the file into the upload area I have tested in the exact same browser versions on WinXP, Vista, and Win7. The appropriate styles are redrawn. However, in Windows Server 2003, they do not. In Win2003, when I inspect the div that should be redrawn via Firebug, the "drop-area" and "drop-area-active" classes are applied correctly. Firebug even shows the correct style declarations, but the changes are never visible. The only difference between FF and Chrome that I'm able to spot is that in Chrome, the "drop-area-active" style is displayed for a split second when the user drops the file. I'm not positive that it is a Windows2003 issue, but that's the only OS in which I'm able to recreate the bug.

  I am about to embark on my first outlook 2007 plugin. I would like to create a new tool bar that will have a button that will initially be disabled. When the user selects a message the button should be enabled... but only if the email is of a certain type of email... This is where I need your expert advice, is there a way to quickly flag an email in outlook, so that in the email select event you can look for a property of that email... for example... on_select if mail.type = "FromISP" then I would prefer not to use the from field.... the other thing is during the send process I need to set the flag, I am doing this again using .net so I have full control over how the mail is created. Any ideas would help... Thanks

• How to Find Office 2003 Commands in Office 2010

  Are you new to the ribbon interface in Office 2010?  Here’s how you can get up to speed and learn where everything is quickly and easily. Microsoft has made an interactive guide to Office 2010’s new interface to help users learn their way around the new version.  If you’ve already used Office 2007, then Office 2010 will be very easy to transition to, but if you’re still using Office 2003 you may find the learning curve more steep.  With this interactive guide, upgrading your Office skills doesn’t have to be hard. Learn Your Way Around the Office Ribbon Open the Office 2010 interactive guides site (link below) in your browser, and select the Office app you want to explore. The guides are powered by Silverlight, so if you don’t already have it installed you will be prompted to do so. Once the guide has loaded, click Start to begin. Select any menu or toolbar item in the Office 2003 mockup.  A tooltip will appear to show you how to find this option in Word 2010. If you click the item, the interface will switch to an Office 2010 mockup and will interactively show you how to access this feature.  The Thumbnails view isn’t available by default in Word 2010, so it shows us how to add it to the ribbon.  When you’ve figured this command out, click anywhere to go back to the Office 2003 mockup and find another item. Currently the guides are available for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but the site says that guides for the other Office apps will be available soon.  Here’s the PowerPoint guide showing where the Rehearse Timings option is in PowerPoint 2010. Install the Interactive Guides to Your Computer You can also install the guides to your computer so you can easily access them even if you’re not online.  Open the guide you want to install, and click the Install button in the top right corner of the guide. Choose where you want the shortcuts, and click Ok. Here’s the Interactive Word 2010 guide installed on our computer.  The downloaded version seemed to work faster in our tests, likely because all the content was already saved to the computer.  If you decide you don’t need it any more, click Uninstall in the top right corner. Download Office Cheat Sheets If you’d like a cheat-sheet of Office commands that have changed or are new in Office 2010, Microsoft’s got that for you, too.  You can download Office reference workbooks (link below) that show how to access each item that was in Office 2003’s menus.  Here’s the Word guide showing where each of Word 2003’s commands from the help menu are in Word 2010. Learn Your Way Around Office 2007, Too!   Hello, I have 2 client compters running XP and MS office with Outlook 2007. I have a 2003 server running exchange. Clients e-mail account was removed on clients computer. But the e-mails are still on server as I see the mailbox with approx 14k of mail How do I restore the e-mail account on clients and retrieve the e-mail from server. I did not set up the outlook or exchange, so I do not know the e-mail settings. Any help? Chris

• Is there a way to use an inline PNG image in an Outlook e-mail?

  In my work as a developer I sometimes find myself sending details emails with screenshots to illustrate some point or problem. The content of these screenshots is often text. So knowing that PNG is much better at handle compression of images with text, I save my screenshots as PNG and insert them into my email. However whenever I check my sent mail, the images are clearly being sent as a JPG because they look horribly compressed. I'm using Outlook 2003 as my email program. Is there some setting I can change to make Outlook send inline images as PNGs?

• Outlook 2010 Unable to See Free/Busy Information While Outlook 2007 can

  In this office, most of us are using Outlook 2007, while a few of us uses Outlook 2010. For Outlook 2007, we are able to view other people's free busy information after hacking the registry of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Options\Calendar and enter a new DWORD value data called 'UseLegacyFB' and set the value as 1. Once we do that, we are able to view people's free/busy information. I don't know what to do with the Outlook 2010, since hacking the registry and updating windows did not work. Help? :(

• Cannot click send button in Outlook (+ Exchange) for unknown addresses

  Hi, I have a very unusual problem. I have Outlook 2010 connected to Exchange 2010. This can send emails perfectly to known addresses (that is, addresses in the address book or ones that have been sent to previously). However, if I put in an address that is unknown, I cannot actually click the Send button in Outlook. (it simply does nothing). Corresponding to this I get errors in the Event Log for each Send click stating "The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.". However, Outlook shows as connected the whole time, pings do not break, and I have no reason to suspect it has lost connection. To further complicate matters, Outlook is fine on all other PCs, and this was all perfect until I installed BitDefender on the PC in question and the Exchange Server. Outlook was still fine on these other PCs while BitDefender was installed, but I have removed it from the PC in question and the Server just in case (no success). Summary: Outlook encounters Exchange connectivity issues when sending to unknown (new) email addresses that prevent the Send button actually working at all. This is isolated to one machine and occurred after installation of AV/Firewall software which has since been thoroughly removed. If you have any potential solutions I'd love to hear them, as I will be resorting to reformatting the PC in question, and probably removing Exchange because I'm sick of its issues if I cannot resolve this soon. Big thanks for any help.

• Adding custom context menu items to an Outlook MailItem using Outlook 2007 VSTO 3.0

  Hi I've been trying to figure out how to create a context menu in VSTO 2007. I'm hoping that is possible. When I make this call. Dim commandBar As Microsoft.Office.Core.CommandBar = _word.CommandBars("Text") I get the following error. This object model command is not available in e-mail. I've look all over and from what I can tell it's not possible to add to the context menu in Office 2007. This doesn't seem right. I've also tried this event without any luck since it isn't being fired when right clicking on the MailItem ItemContextMenuDisplay(ByVal commandBar As Microsoft.Office.Core.CommandBar, ByVal selection As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Selection) Hoping that someone can help. Email is one of the most important communications mediums today, but even with all of the advances in Outlook over the years it can still be difficult to keep track of conversations, files, and contacts.  Xobni makes it easy by indexing your emails and organizing them by sender.  You can use its powerful search to quickly find any email, find related messages, and then view more information about that contact with information from social networks.  And, to top it off, it even lets you view your Yahoo! emails directly in Outlook without upgrading to a Yahoo! Plus account.  Xobni runs in Outlook 2003, 2007, and 2010, including the 64 bit version of Outlook 2010, and users of older versions will especially enjoy the new features Xobni brings for free. Getting started Download the Xobni Free installer (link below), and run to start the installation.  Make sure to exit Outlook before installing.  Xobni may need to download additional files which may take a few moments. When the download is finished, proceed with the install as normal.  You can opt out of the Product Improvement Program at the end of the installation by unchecking the box.  Additionally, you are asked to share Xobni with your friends on social networks, but this is not required.   Next time you open Outlook, you’ll notice the new Xobni sidebar in Outlook.  You can choose to watch an introduction video that will help you quickly get up to speed on how Xobni works. While this is playing, Xobni is working at indexing your email in the background.  Once the first indexing is finished, click Let’s Go! to start using Xobni. Here’s how Xobni looks in Outlook 2010: Advanced Email Information Select an email, and now you can see lots of info about it in your new Xobni sidebar.   On the top of the sidebar, select the graph icon to see when and how often you email with a contact.  Each contact is given an Xobni rank so you can quickly see who you email the most.   You can see all related emails sorted into conversations, and also all attachments in the conversation, not just this email. Xobni can also show you all scheduled appointments and links exchanged with a contact, but this is only available in the Plus version.  If you’d rather not see the tab for a feature you can’t use, click Don’t show this tab to banish it from Xobni for good.   Searching emails from the Xobni toolbar is very fast, and you can preview a message by simply hovering over it from the search pane. Get More Information About Your Contacts Xobni’s coolest feature is its social integration.  Whenever you select an email, you may see a brief bio, picture, and more, all pulled from social networks.   Select one of the tabs to find more information.  You may need to login to view information on your contacts from certain networks. The Twitter tab lets you see recent tweets.  Xobni will search for related Twitter accounts, and will ask you to confirm if the choice is correct.   Now you can see this contact’s recent Tweets directly from Outlook.   The Hoovers tab can give you interesting information about the businesses you’re in contact with. If the information isn’t correct, you can edit it and add your own information.  Click the Edit button, and the add any information you want.   You can also remove a network you don’t wish to see.  Right-click on the network tabs, select Manage Extensions, and uncheck any you don’t want to see. But sometimes online contact just doesn’t cut it.  For these times, click on the orange folder button to request a contact’s phone number or schedule a time with them. This will open a new email message ready to send with the information you want.  Edit as you please, and send. Add Yahoo! Email to Outlook for Free One of Xobni’s neatest features is that it let’s you add your Yahoo! email account to Outlook for free.  Click the gear icon in the bottom of the Xobni sidebar and select Options to set it up. Select the Integration tab, and click Enable to add Yahoo! mail to Xobni. Sign in with your Yahoo! account, and make sure to check the Keep me signed in box. Note that you may have to re-signin every two weeks to keep your Yahoo! account connected.  Select I agree to finish setting it up. Xobni will now download and index your recent Yahoo! mail. Your Yahoo! messages will only show up in the Xobni sidebar.  Whenever you select a contact, you will see related messages from your Yahoo! account as well.  Or, you can search from the sidebar to find individual messages from your Yahoo! account.  Note the Y! logo beside Yahoo! messages.   Select a message to read it in the Sidebar.  You can open the email in Yahoo! in your browser, or can reply to it using your default Outlook email account. If you have many older messages in your Yahoo! account, make sure to go back to the Integration tab and select Index Yahoo! Mail to index all of your emails. • What extra permission settings were added in Windows Server 2003 over Windows Server 2000?

  We have a domain controller currently running Windows Server 2000, and we're in the process of upgrading some of our workstations to Windows 7. The problem is that users are getting access denied messages to things they should be able to do, even trivial things like deleting shortcuts from the desktop. The users run at less than administrative levels, which we want to maintain. We think this is caused by Windows 7 having extra security permission settings that are getting defaulted to denied, because the new settings wouldn't actually exist in the Windows 2000 profiles. The reason I'm asking about Windows 2003 Server is because we have an available license of that, and not to 2008 (which would likely solve the problem completely, but costs $). So what I'd like to find out is if the permission settings in 2003 will be sufficient for our needs to justify upgrading the domain controller to 2003.

  So we were trying to transfer files from unix server to a windows server 2003. I currently don't have any visibility on the unix server since it is being handled by another team. So in order for the 2 servers to establish connection, they sent us a public key which they said that we need to register on our windows server 2003 machine. can anyone help me? i cant seem to find anything about registering this public key generated by putty on a windows server 2003. there's no directory to put the public key(like in linux authorized_keys). Any help will be appreciated. thanks in advance. EDIT: we're trying to transfer file via pscp if this info is needed.

• Should I upgrade Exchange 2003 or just upgrade the hardware?

  My organization currently has a 4 y/o Exchange 2003 email server (32-bit, Intel Pentium D @ 3GHz, 3GB RAM). It's run very well over the past 4 years but it is time to upgrade its hardware. This server would handle email for approximately 30 clients, a few OWA users with iPhones. My (somewhat ambiguous) question is, when I receive the new hardware should I build out a new Exchange 2003 deployment or should I look at Exchange 2007 / 2010? I've heard that Exchange 2010 requires Sharepoint 2010 (which I am currently not running). Are there benefits that a small-medium sized business can or can't do without? Am I making a horrible mistake staying with antiquated software? Other details: Exchange 2003 (v6.5 + SP2) single front-end server All opinions and thoughts are very much appreciated.

• Specific font in Windows 7 works, but in Windows Server 2003 doesn't. Why?

  I have a .TTF font and when i open it in Windwos 7 it's all ok, the characters is appearing in various sizes and etc.., but when i open it in Windows Server 2003 nothing is appearing inside it. Shows up a "blank font", whitout the characters. I need that font for my app that have to work in both systems... Obs: all others fonts are ok in Windows Server 2003, when i open anyone the characters is appearing. -- EDIT I copy the font to another Windows Server 2003.... and works fine. Anyone have any idea?
