  • Rails group validation with just one error message

    - by Victor
The following validation code in the model: validates :formatted_address, :zip, :city, :state, :country, :presence => true, :message => "is incomplete. Please enter full address." is displayed when either of the fields are empty. Let's say now :address and country are empty, 2 errors are displayed: Formatted Address is incomplete. Please enter full address. Country is incomplete. Please enter full address. How can I group the error message in the validation to just show one error message if either of the fields validated does not exist? Address is incomplete. Please enter full address. Thanks.

  • Problem with displaying usernames in my flash[:notice] - Agile Web Development With Rails - Chapter

    - by Lee
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here. I can’t seem to get the #{@user.name} to work in my flash[:notice] Everything else works just fine I can add new users, but when I add a new user instead of saying “User John Doe was successfully created”, it says “User #{@user.name} was successfully created.” I'm at this point in the depot app: depot_p/app/controllers/users_controller.rb to work.

  • Rails 3 respond_with, route constraints and resources

    - by Intelekshual
I'm building a versioned API, so I have the following nested controllers: ApiController < ApplicationController Api::V1Controller < ApiController Api::V1::EventsController < Api::V1Controller The API is accessed via a subdomain. I have the following routes: constraints(:subdomain => "api") do scope :module => 'api' do namespace :v1 do resources :events end end end This produces the type of URL I want (/v1/events). The problem I'm facing is when using responds_with in Api::V1::EventsController. Just doing something as simple as the below fails with the error too few arguments: def index @events = Event.all respond_with(@events) end I know respond_width is meant to be used with resources, but I'm not sure how the events resource should be accessed from the constrained, scoped, and namespaced route. I can output other things (such as current_user), just not an array of events. Help?

  • In rails, what defines unit testing as opposed to other kinds of testing

    - by junky
Initially I thought this was simple: unit testing for models with other testing such as integration for controller and browser testing for views. But more recently I've seen a lot of references to unit testing that doesn't seem to exactly follow this format. Is it possible to have a unit test of a controller? Does that mean that just one method is called? What's the distinction? What does unit testing really means in my rails world?

  • when to choose ruby on rails over java [closed]

    - by Dany Y
I have been working with Java EE for 6 years, and I have mostly used it even for simple applications like data-entry to database). I heard Ruby on Rails is superior to Java in this domain. What are the actual advantages of Ruby. and should I switch ? P.S : I know this is a subjective question, and the most probable answer is "depends on what you'll use it for", but this is exactly what I want to know when to use what. Thank you

  • Yahoo media player not working with Ruby on rails

    - by luca590
I have a yahoo media player embedded in my webpage. I am currently using Ruby on Rails to create/edit my web page. When i click the play button next to a track the YMP waits a while and then goes to the next track without playing the first one. I then get a warning on my second (last) track that its file could not be found. Does anyone has a better recommendation for an audio player or a way to fix this one?

  • Passenger/Rails not releasing memory

    - by michaeldelorenzo
I have an Ubuntu server running three separate Rails (2.3.8) applications with Passenger, REE and Apache. Recently we started experiencing problems with ruby processes eating up memory and consuming entire cores on our server. Here's what we're getting... %CPU PID USER COMMAND 99.9 1717 nobody Rails: /var/www/api 99.6 5542 nobody Rails: /var/www/api 97.3 1223 nobody Rails: /var/www/api 4.7 5537 nobody Passenger ApplicationSpawner: /var/www/api 10.5 1801 nobody Rails: /var/www/api We've also seen instances where there have been over 100 instances of Apache running. These applications have been running for a few months without an of these issues, but in the last day or so we've been noticing this. The site referenced here is a Rails application that is a RESTful API so it serves many requests every minute. Any guidance on what we should be checking or looking out for would be appreciated.

  • How does Rails find models and controllers? How can I get it to load more models?

    - by David
I'm trying to create a non-ActiveRecord model in app/models/gamestate.rb. Then inside my controller (PlayController) I should be able to do GameState.new, right? No go: NameError (uninitialized constant PlayController::GameState): app/controllers/play_controller.rb:23:in `play' (at least in the development environment) But! If I do have a model called app/models/play.rb, then it's automatically loaded and I can do Play.new. So my question is: how does Rails know which classes to load? What sort of name mangling does it do to get from play#action to PlayController to app/controllers/play_controller.rb to app/models/play.rb? It seems awfully fragile, but maybe a better understanding of how this works would help. And finally, how can I get it to load app/models/gamestate.rb?

  • In Rails models; for symbols get automatically converted to YAML when saving to DB. What is the corr

    - by Ram
In my model example Game, has a status column. But I usually set status by using symbols. Example self.status = :active MATCH_STATUS = { :betting_on => "Betting is on", :home_team_won => "Home team has won", :visiting_team_won => "Visiting team has one", :game_tie => "Game is tied" }.freeze def viewable_status MATCH_STATUS[self.status] end I use the above Map to switch between viewable status and viceversa. However when the data gets saved to db, ActiveRecord appends "--- " to each status. So when I retrieve back the status is screwed. What should be the correct approach?

    - by Patrick Oscity
hi all, im trying to do this: class Event < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :previous_event has_one :event, :as => :previous_event, :foreign_key => "previous_event_id" belongs_to :next_event has_one :event, :as => :next_event, :foreign_key => "next_event_id" end because i want to enable the user to repeat events and change multiple oncoming events at the same time. what am i doing wrong, or is there another way of doing this? somehow i need to know about the previous and the next event, don't i? when i'm testing this in the consolewith Event.all[1].previous_event, i get the following error: NameError: uninitialized constant Event::PreviousEvent from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.5/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:105:in `const_missing' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:2199:in `compute_type' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.5/lib/active_support/core_ext/kernel/reporting.rb:11:in `silence_warnings' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:2195:in `compute_type' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/reflection.rb:156:in `send' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/reflection.rb:156:in `klass' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations/belongs_to_association.rb:49:in `find_target' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations/association_proxy.rb:239:in `load_target' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations/association_proxy.rb:112:in `reload' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations.rb:1250:in `previous_event' from (irb):2 what is going wrong here? thanks a ton for your help.

  • Rails uses wrong class in belongs_to

    - by macsniper
I have an application managing software tests and a class called TestResult: class TestResult < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :test_case, :class_name => "TestCase" end I'm right now migrating from Rails 1.x to 2.3.5. In Rails 1.x everything works fine. When trying to access the association in Rails 2.3.5, I get the following error: NoMethodError: undefined method 'find' for ActiveRecord::TestCase:Class from /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations/belongs_to_association.rb:49:in 'send' from /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations/belongs_to_association.rb:49:in 'find_target' from /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations/association_proxy.rb:239:in 'load_target' from /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations/association_proxy.rb:112:in 'reload' from /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations.rb:1250:in 'test_case' My Question is: how can I tell Rails to use my TestCase-class instead of ActiveRecord::TestCase. TestCase class: class TestCase < ActiveRecord::Base set_table_name "test_case" has_many :test_results belongs_to :component, :foreign_key => "subsystem_id" belongs_to :domain, :foreign_key => "area_id" belongs_to :use_case, :foreign_key => "use_case_id" end

  • Why it's important to specify the complete class name in your association when using namespaces

    - by Carmine Paolino
In my Rails application there is a model that has some has_one associations (this is a fabricated example): class Person::Admin < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :person_monthly_revenue has_one :dude_monthly_niceness accepts_nested_attributes_for :person_monthly_revenue, :dude_monthly_niceness end class Person::MonthlyRevenue < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :person_admin end class Dude::MonthlyNiceness < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :person_admin end The application talks to a backend that computes some data and returns a piece of JSON like this: { "dude_monthly_niceness": { "february": 1.1153232569518972, "october": 1.1250217200558268, "march": 1.3965786869658541, "august": 1.6293418014601631, "september": 1.4062771500697835, "may": 1.7166279693955291, "january": 1.0086401628086725, "june": 1.5711510228365859, "april": 1.5614525597326563, "december": 0.99894169970474289, "july": 1.7263264324994585, "november": 0.95044938418509506 }, "person_monthly_revenue": { "february": 10.585596551505297, "october": 10.574823016656749, "march": 9.9125274764852787, "august": 9.2111604702328922, "september": 9.7905249446675153, "may": 9.1329712474607962, "january": 10.479614016604238, "june": 9.3710235926961936, "april": 9.5897372624830304, "december": 10.052587677671438, "july": 8.9508877843925561, "november": 10.925339756096172 }, } To deserialize it, I use ActiveRecord's from_json, but instead of a Person::Admin object with all the associations in place, I get this error: >> Person::Admin.new.from_json(json) NameError: uninitialized constant Person::Admin::DudeMonthlyNiceness Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way to deserialize data? (I can modify the backend easily) UPDATE: the original title was "How to deserialize from json to ActiveRecord objects with associations?" but it ended up being my mistake in specifying associations so I changed the title.

  • Gitorious errors

    - by Switz
I installed Gitorious on my (shared) hosting. I was getting errors, but I seemed to have fixed most of them. It is working. When I commit/push, I get a lot of remote: errors spewed out although it does push the files properly from what I can tell. Here are the errors I'm getting (I swapped out the domain to git.domain.com): $ git push origin master Counting objects: 5, done. Delta compression using up to 2 threads. Default: /usr/bin/ruby1.8 -d, --database=name Preconfigure for selected database (options: mysql/oracle/postgresql/sqlite2/sqlite3/frontbase/ibm_db). Default: sqlite3 -D, --with-dispatchers Add CGI/FastCGI/mod_ruby dispatches code to generated application skeleton Default: false --freeze Freeze Rails in vendor/rails from the gems generating the skeleton Default: false -m, --template=path Use an application template that lives at path (can be a filesystem path or URL). Default: (none) Rails Info: -v, --version Show the Rails version number and quit. -h, --help Show this help message and quit. General Options: -p, --pretend Run but do not make any changes. -f, --force Overwrite files that already exist. -s, --skip Skip files that already exist. -q, --quiet Suppress normal output. -t, --backtrace Debugging: show backtrace on errors. -c, --svn Modify files with subversion. (Note: svn must be in path) -g, --git Modify files with git. • How to build a JSON response by combining @foo.to_json(options) and @bars.to_json(options) in Rails

    - by smotchkkiss
First, the desired result I have User and Item models. I'd like to build a JSON response that looks like this: { "user": {"username":"Bob!","foo":"whatever","bar":"hello!"}, "items": [ {"id":1, "name":"one", "zim":"planet", "gir":"earth"}, {"id":2, "name":"two", "zim":"planet", "gir":"mars"} ] } However, my User and Item model have more attributes than just those. I found a way to get this to work, but beware, it's not pretty... Please help... My hacks home_controller.rb class HomeController < ApplicationController def observe respond_to do |format| format.js { render :json => Observation.new(current_user, @items).to_json } end end end observation.rb # NOTE: this is not a subclass of ActiveRecord::Base # this class just serves as a container to aggregate all "observable" objects class Observation attr_accessor :user, :items def initialize(user, items) self.user = user self.items = items end # The JSON needs to be decoded before it's sent to the `to_json` method in the home_controller otherwise the JSON will be escaped... # What a mess! def to_json { :user => ActiveSupport::JSON.decode(user.to_json(:only => :username, :methods => [:foo, :bar])), :items => ActiveSupport::JSON.decode(auctions.to_json(:only => [:id, :name], :methods => [:zim, :gir])) } end end

  • Ruby on Rails ActiveScaffold: Showing {{model}} instead of model name?

    - by AnExtremelySmellyPerson
Hi there, I'm using ActiveScaffold with Ruby on Rails and I'm loving it, however there is one weird thing. Whenever I hit "Edit" or "Create New" in my webapp's ActiveScaffold, it says "Create {{model}}" or "Update {{model}}" in the webapp rather than using the model's name. Why is this? I have an ads_controller.rb that includes this: active_scaffold :ad do |config| config.label = "Ads" config.columns = [:name, :description, :imageUrl, :linkUrl, :apps, :created_at, :updated_at] config.update.columns = [:name, :description, :imageUrl, :linkUrl, :apps] config.create.columns = config.update.columns list.sorting = {:created_at => 'DESC'} columns[:imageUrl].label = "Image URL" columns[:linkUrl].label = "Link URL" end And my routes.rb includes this: map.namespace :admin do |admin| admin.root :controller => 'admin_home', :action => 'index' admin.resources :ads, :active_scaffold => true end Any thoughts on why I'm seeing "Create {{model}}" instead of "Create ad" ?

  • Rails solution for mobile-specific content filter?

    - by Damien Roche
To note, I'm not interested in simply 'hiding' content for mobile devices, I want to filter out that content completely. I'm also not trying to address the issue by building a mobile specific interface (mob.example.com). There was another question regarding something similar: How do I prevent useless content load on the page in responsive design? The solution, in that post, was to set a session during the initial request, and then use the session to filter content on subsequent requests. I primarily develop in Rails, and I'm wondering if there are any gems or ruby-specific solutions to this problem?

  • Rails Easy Data Dumping

    - by Madhan ayyasamy
    Hi Friends,The following useful snippets,you can find out the easiest way of ruby on rails environment data dumping. You’ll often need to get data from production to dev or dev to your local or your local to another developer’s local. One plug-in we use over and over is Yaml_db. This nifty little plug-in enables you to dump or load data by issuing a Rake command. The data is persisted in a yaml file located in db/data.yml. This is very portable and easy to read if you need to examine the data.01rake db:data:dump02 03example data found in db/data.yml04 05---06campaigns:07  columns:08  - id09  - client_id10  - name11  - created_at12  - updated_at13  - token14  records:15  - - "1"16    - "1"17    - First push18    - 2008-11-03 18:23:5319    - 2008-11-03 18:23:5320    - 3f2523f6a66521  - - "2"22    - "2"23    - First push24    - 2008-11-03 18:26:5725    - 2008-11-03 18:26:5726    - 9ee8bc427d94
