• Cross-platform (microcontroller-PC) algorithm development

  Hello people! I was asked to develop a algorithm for network application on C. This project will be developed on Linux for PC and then it will be transferred to a more portable platform, something that will include a microcontroller. There are many microcontroller/companies out there that provide very nice and large libraries for TCP/IP. This software will hold statistics on the network performance. The whole idea of a cross platform (uC - PC) seems rubbish to me cause eventually the code should be written in a more platform specific way for the microcontroller, but I am not expert to judge anyway. Is there any clever way of doing this or is there a anyone that did this before? My brainstorming has "Wrapper library" and "Matlab"... Any ideas? Thx!

• Alternative to Turbo C

  My university is hosting a Programming Competition, and have decided to support Turbo C (the 16-bit DOS version) as a valid programming environment. I have just read that PC^2, the software that is going to be used to auto-judge the competition, does not support 16-bit programs. So, is there any alternative to Turbo C that I can use. I need the same header files, and the compiler would need to support all the outdated C standards that Turbo C supports. But the output needs to be 32-bit. Is there any compiler that can satisfy these conditions?

• EF 4 - associations with keys that dont match

  We're using POCOs and have 2 entities: Item and ItemContact. There are 1 or more contacts per item. Item has as a primary key: ItemID LanguageCode ItemContact has: ItemID ContactID We cant add an association with a referrential constraint as they have differing keys. There isnt a strict primary / foreign key as languageCode isnt in ItemContact and ContactID isnt in Item. How can we go about mapping this with an association for contacts for an item if there isnt a direct link but I still want to see the contacts for an item? One of the entities originates in a database view so it is not possible to add foreign keys to the database Thanks Stephen Ward

  Hi - I'm trying to read an image file and scale it by multiplying each byte by a scale its pixel levels by some absolute factor.   I'm working on UVa #112 Tree Summing. I have what I think should be a working solution but it is not accepted by the online judge due to a basic misunderstanding of the problem on my part. Consider the following inputs: -1 (-1()()) 77 (77(1()())()) or diagrammatically, the trees look like: -1 77 / \ / \ () () 1 () / \ () () According to at least two working solutions, the correct output for the above inputs is: yes no However, I don't understand why the second one should be 'no'. It looks to me like the rightmost path of the tree should give the proper sum. What am I missing?

• will paginate, nested routes, ruby, rails

  I'm trying to get will paginate to link to my nested route instead of the regular posts variable. I know I'm supposed to pass some params to paginate but I don't know how to pass them. Basically there is an array stored in @posts and the other param paginate has access to is category_id. The nested route is /category/1/posts but hitting next and previous on will paginate returns a url like this posts?page=1&category_id=7. <%= will_paginate @most_recent_posts "What do I do here?" %> This is the result of Yannis's answer: In your controller you can do: @posts = @category.posts.paginate And in your view: <%= will_paginate(@post) %> Doing this comes up with the following URL posts?page=2&post_category_id=athlete_management routes.rb #there are more routes but these are the relevant ones map.resources :posts map.resources :post_categories, :has_many => :posts solution map.resources :post_categories do |post_category| post_category.resources :posts end map.resources :posts Had to declare the resource after the block Thanks stephen!

• Unit Testing, IDataContext and Stored Procedures via Linq

  hey folks, I'm currently using Stephen Walther's approach to unit testing Linq to SQL and the datacontext (http://stephenwalther.com/blog/archive/2008/08/17/asp-net-mvc-tip-33-unit-test-linq-to-sql.aspx) which is working a treat for all things linq. My Dal layer takes in an IDataContext, I use DI (via Unity) to concrete that up as the correct DataContext object and all works well. But - we have a company policy here of writes going via Stored Procs. Has anyone come up with a solution for mocking/faking the data context and still allowing stored procs to effectively be unit tested? I've got no real experience of any of the mocking frameworks (Rhino etc.) so if these are the correct means of doing this, I'd love some pointers on guides for them. Many thanks, Terry

  I am trying to load Linq on my .Net 3.5 enabled web server by adding the following to my .aspx page: <%@ Import Namespace="System.Query" %> However, this fails and tells me it cannot find the namespace. The type or namespace name 'Query' does not exist in the namespace 'System' I have also tried with no luck: System.Data.Linq System.Linq System.Xml.Linq I believe that .Net 3.5 is working because var hello = "Hello World" seems to work. Can anyone help please? Cheers, Stephen PS: I just want to clarify that I don't use Visual Studio, I simple have a Text Editor and write my code directly into .aspx files.

• WPF data grid for financial style reporting?

  Hello, I'm looking for a decent WPF data grid or solution involving one to represent financial data. I've looked at many - the WPF one, XCeed, Ingragistics, DevExpress, etc.... but none of them seem to offer the simple requirement I have: I want to be able to display group subtotals in their columns in the group row, e.g. GROUP 1 xxxx.xx GROUP 2 xxxx.xx ROW 1 xx.xx ROW 2 xx.xx Does anyone know of a grid that does this, or a nice supporting collection that implements aggregate functions (group totals would need to be used in individual line items) so that existing grids with a bit of XAML styling would work? And this is where I'm stuck. I haven't yet found an workaround for this in MVVM adoptation for SL (PRISM is so complex for me yet). Different simple HelloWorldMVVM apps don't deal with at all. • Dynamic table design (common lookup table), need a nice query to get the values

  sql2005 This is my simplified example: (in reality there are 40+ tables in here, I only showed 2) I got a table called tb_modules, with 3 columns (id, description, tablename as varchar): 1, UserType, tb_usertype 2, Religion, tb_religion (Last column is actually the name of a different table) I got an other table that looks like this: tb_value (columns:id, tb_modules_ID, usertype_OR_religion_ID) values: 1111, 1, 45 1112, 1, 55 1113, 2, 123 1114, 2, 234 so, I mean 45, 55, 123, 234 are usertype OR religion ID's (45, 55 usertype, 123, 234 religion ID`s) Don't judge, I didn't design the database Question How can I make a select, showing * from tb_value, plus one column That one column would be TITLE from the tb_usertype or RELIGIONNAME from the tb_religion table I would like to make a general thing. Was thinking initially about maybe a SQL function that returns a string, but I think I would need dynamic SQL, which is not ok in a function. Anyone a better idea ?

• need help with acts_as_ferret and will_paginate to play nice together

  I have installed will_paginate and acts_as_ferret on my system for ruby rails. My paginate seems to work fine before installing acts_as_ferret. When I put in the code to do searching I get the following error: NoMethodError in Community#search Showing app/views/community/_result_summary.rhtml where line #3 raised: undefined method `total_entries' for []:Array Extracted source (around line #3): 1: <% if @users %> 2: <p> 3: Found <%= pluralize(@users.total_entries, "match") %>. 4: </p> 5: <% end %> If I take out the search function, paginate works but it's pointless because I can't do searches. • Google Web Optimizer -- How long until winning combination?

  I've had an A/B Test running in Google Web Optimizer for six weeks now, and there's still no end in sight. Google is still saying: "We have not gathered enough data yet to show any significant results. When we collect more data we should be able to show you a winning combination." Is there any way of telling how close Google is to making up its mind? (Does anyone know what algorithm does it use to decide if there's been any "high confidence winners"?) According to the Google help documentation: Sometimes we simply need more data to be able to reach a level of high confidence. A tested combination typically needs around 200 conversions for us to judge its performance with certainty. But all of our conversions have over 200 conversations at the moment: 230 / 4061 (Original) 223 / 3937 (Variation 1) 205 / 3984 (Variation 2) 205 / 4007 (Variation 3) How much longer is it going to have to run?? I just couldn't complete all of the 20 since it took me time to go through each of these code snippets. My question is: Is this the right way to judge a candidate? If yes, how can I improve over my error detection skills so that I don't need to waste a lot of time in the next interview? • Predicting performance for an iPhone/iPod Touch App

  I don't have an iPhone Developer Program Account yet and will be getting one in the next couple of days. Can instruments be used with the simulator to give a rough estimate on how well my app may perform? Using instruments I checked and fixed all the leaks it was detecting, and it appears that my memory usage maxes out at about 5.77mb. Is there any other tests I could perform with instruments to judge how well my app would perform? I realize there is no way other then the actual device to get a definite answer, it would be nice to get an estimate.

  I just saw the following code among the successful submissions at codechef. http://www.codechef.com/viewplaintext/1595846 I used to think that float max(int n,int arr[n][n]) {....} is not allowed in C++ (as 'n' is a variable). My CodeBlocks (on windows) with MinGW [gcc 4.4] gives compile time error. that "error: array bound is not an integer constant. Then how can be such a solution be accepted by CodeChef's judge. • Should GSON ignore varying types if they're not used in a class?

  I'm making an API call that returns JSON which has a particular field which either returns false or a map depending on content. It's a field that I don't care about. I expected GSON to ignore this particular field, though it doesn't seem to be. The object generation fails with the following message: com.google.gson.JsonSyntaxException: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Expected a string but was BEGIN_OBJECT at line 1 column 403560 I've seen this particular question (Gson deserialize json with varying value types). I want to make sure I need to make a custom deserializer before doing so. I'm wondering if I may have another issue. edit: Example: "anonymous_flag": { } vs "anonymous_flag": "yes" Another Edit: I actually had the field in my model object... I was referencing the wrong class. Judge away :)
