• Putting the Con (COM1, LPT1, NUL, etc.) Back in your URLs

One annoyance that some developers have run into with ASP.NET MVC is that certain reserved filenames are not allowed in URLs. The specifics of this restriction are accounted for in an interesting blog post entitled Zombie Operating Systems and ASP.NET MVC. This actually wasnt a restriction on ASP.NET MVC but was built into the core of ASP.NET itself. Fortunately, ASP.NET 4 fixes this issue with a new setting. In web.config, simply add <httpRuntime relaxedUrlToFileSystemMapping="true"/> to...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Another transition…

After spending a year and a half working on M, Ive decided to make another change in what Im doing and and move over to the SQL Server Programmability team. Thats the team responsible for things like the T-SQL language and runtime in SQL Server. Working on M was a lot of fun and the team was great, but after spending a good, long while down in the bowels of a GLR parser, I decided that that was enough and that it was time to do something else. Working on SQL Server programmability is, in some ways,...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Today is last chance for EF Profiler 30% discount

Ayende has reminded us that Entity Framework Profiler’s Beta period ends tomorrow when it goes RTM. But that means the 30% discount also ends. It will go from $220US to $315US tomorrow. I spend a lot of time looking at what’s going on in my database when using EF and the views that EFProf provide are indispensible. It’s organized by context instance and provides links back to the .NET code that executed each command. I sure wish I had stock in this tool! ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Where to recruit other developers for development in my game? [duplicate]

- by user16871
This question already has an answer here: Where can I meet other independent game developers? [on hold] 10 answers I am working on creating a futuristic 3d voxel game, but I will not be able to do it alone with the amount of content I perceive being in it, and so I would like to have some co-workers in the development of the game. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to find game developers. Are there any forums or similar exchanges, maybe even here, that I could look for other developers seeking to make a similar game?

• Using MPMoviePlayerViewController full screen in iPad app that's not fully ported from iPad...yet.

- by heymon
I have an iPhone app that launched the good old MPMoviePlayerController with a movie file. I changed it to a MPMoviePlayerViewController and used presentMoviePlayerViewControllerAnimated to get the movie to play on the iPad. It looks awful with the 2x sized controls. Can this be coded in such a way that it will look good regardless of which device? This is just an intermediate thing, but I need to get it going quickly. Thanks for any pointers.

• Top 5 reasons for using ASP.NET MVC 2 rather than ASP.NET MVC 1

- by Richard Ev
I've been using ASP.NET MVC 1 for a while now, and am keen to take advantage of the improvements in MVC 2. Things like validation seem greatly improved, and strongly-typed HTML helper methods look great. So, for those of you who have real-world practical experience of using ASP.NET MVC 1 and are now using MVC 2, what are your top 5 reasons for using MVC 2?

• Open source alternative for "Intellitrace"

- by Elazar Leibovich
Microsoft has recently announced "Intellitrace", a killer feature for VS2010 IMHO. Basically it records all the instructions the program ran, and allows you to easily look through the execution log. Is there a similar feature for open source tools? Specifically such a feature for Java with Eclipse integration would be a nice thing to have.

• What is the role and purpose of a bootstrapper?

- by ForeverDebugging
I'm working on an application which uses a bootscrapper object to perform some operations when the application first starts. e.g. registers IoC objects, puts certain variables into the asp.net Application session object, does some security checks etc. I had a look around the internet and couldn't find a reference to a bootscrapper pattern, or any article about the subject. Is this a known pattern under a different name?

• tfs integration with delphi 2010

- by Robert McCabe
We are currently upgrading from Delphi 7 to Delphi 2010. With Delphi 7 we use Source Connection to integrate Delphi 7 with TFS, but there does not look like there is going to be a Delphi 2010 version in time. Is there any other integration option out there?

• How to programmatically replace UIToolBar items built in IB

- by frankodwyer
I have a toolbar with various image buttons, created in Interface Builder. I'd like to be able to programmatically replace one of the buttons with an activity indicator when pressed, and then put back the original button but change its color from white to yellow when the activity completes. Is this possible with an IB built toolbar or must I look at building the whole toolbar programmatically and custom views?

• ASP.NET MVC Create dynamic navigation sub-menu on the master page

- by Michael Narinsky
I'm trying to create an ASP.NET MVC master page so the site navigation on it will look like this: Main Menu:Home | About | News Sub Menu: Home_Page1 | Home_Page2 The Sub Menu section should always show sub-menu for the currently selected Main Menu page (on the example above 'Home' page is selected) unless a user hovers the mouse on another Main Menu item (then it shows that item's sub-menu instead). What is the best way to get such functionality in ASP.NET MVC?

• jqGrid trigger "Loading..." overlay

- by gurun8
Does anyone know how to trigger the stock jqGrid "Loading..." overlay that gets displayed when the grid is loading? I know that I can use a jquery plugin without much effort but I'd like to be able to keep the look-n-feel of my application consistent with that of what is already used in jqGrid. The closes thing I've found is this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2614643/jqgrid-display-default-loading-message-when-updating-a-table-on-custom-update n8

• How to use Android GradientDrawable

- by Janusz
I try to use the GradientDrawable to set a gradient to some backgrounds and buttons. Sadly the documentation is not very detailed. What are the main attributes to configure the gradient? I understand start and endcolor but some of the other attributes could need some explanation. At the moment I used images as the background for the buttons but a drawable defined in XML would be much nicer. I try to get a look like this (It is a very light gradient):

• Sending emails - providers

- by nrph
I need to send emails from my social service (this is continuation of Experiences in mailing to registered users). I got strong feeling that it's better to avoid problems with email server configuration and maintance and to choose email provider which will take care of all painful problems. So several offers were compared: http://imgur.com/JkK2X.jpg Three of them look very attractive: Postageapp / Sendgrid / CritSend Which provider works for you and is worth choosing?

• Toggling on/off Markers in Google Maps API v3

I'm having trouble getting the setMap(null); function that everyone seems to be recommending to work. I believe it may be a problem with the way I've implemented the markers. If someone could take a look and let me know if you see something wrong I'd greatly appreciate it. LINK: http://www.dougglover.com/samples/UOITMap/v2/

• HTML character decoding in Objective-C / Cocoa Touch

- by skidding
First of all, I found this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/659602/objective-c-html-escape-unescape, but it doesn't work for me. My encoded characters (come from a RSS feed, btw) look like this: & I searched all over the net and found related discussions, but no fix for my particular encoding, I think they are called hexadecimal characters. Thanks.
