• Learning MySQL Query optimization

  I've been doing web/desktop/server development for a while and have worked with many databases (mysql mostly). I've come to the point in my career when I need to have someone look at my queries because they're 'kind of slow'. I believe it's now time to start learning query optimization. While I know the basics of index and joins etc., I'm not familiar with how to use, say, the EXPLAIN output to improve performance of my queries. I have not been able to find any online material that starts with the basics and takes me to application. Getting a book is not an option right now so I'm looking for tips about how to proceed with this. I hope this question is general enough not to get closed.

• How to troubleshoot rendering differences between Chrome/IE and Firefox? [on hold]

  I have a personal website and just realized that the display is very different between Firefox (tested 19.0.2 and 25) and Chrome 30.0.1599.101 m Firefox display (this is how I intended it to look. In Chrome & IE9.0 the DIVs all seem to stagger on their own..... ? Im just an amateur and this is my personal blog for fun, Ive never had to troubleshoot a rendering issue like this one. Not sure how to go about doing it? Can Firebug help with determining where layout is inherited from? I have sample HTML if needed but didn't want to cloud up the questions a wall of text.

• Ubuntu 12.04 VM goes dead unexpectedly

  I'm not a super savvy super user, so I'm not sure what to look for. I have a vm running 12.04. It runs fine, and then just dies (no ping, no ssh). When I log into vmwaresphere, I see the vm still 'UP', but the console gives me a response-less black screen. This lead me to believe that Ubuntu was going into some sort of sleep/hibernate state. I double checked the power settings and found nothing out of the ordinary, so now I'm stuck on how to fix the problem. There are 5-7 (centos-5.8 & 6) machines running on the same server/vm setup with no problems at all. thanks.

  Possible Duplicate: Is there a free, open-source question and answer (Q&A) application similar to StackExchange? I need a Q&A platform like StackExchange's sites for lawyers and for free legal questions/answers. So, it must be simple, fast, convenient, with an attractive look. Regular forum's platforms don't suit these characteristics. I found, that bbPress (http://bbpress.org/forums/) isn't bad for this purpose. Is there anything else good for my task? • Vector transform equation explanation

  I'm trying to understand the maths of moving points in a 3d space by making a game written in C#. I'm looking at this wolfire blog series which explains some basic 3d maths. I've read the first two parts but am stuck on the 3rd. I know it's all really rudimentary stuff but I find Googling for help with equations really hard. The one I'm struggling with is: 0*(0.66,0.75) + 2*(-0.75, 0.66) = (-1.5, 1.3) How can anything multiplied by 0 not be 0? So my question is how does this look in code: x(a,b) + y(c,d) I know it's basic stuff but I just can't see it.

  I'm trying to start unit testing (not using any testing frameworks) for my javascripts. Here's one example of it. var obj = {}; obj.disableBtn = function ($btn, style) { $btn.attr('disabled','disabled').addClass('disabled').removeClass(style); }; The use case is as such: obj.disableBtn($('.submit'), 'btn-blue'); What it does is simply add the disabled attribute, add the disabled class, and remove the btn-blue style. Please advise how would a typical test case look like in this case. I have a little knowledge on testing using assert(), but have no idea how to go about it when it involves verifying the result on HTML elements.

The problem is that I have created projects in .NET 3.5 without realizing it, then at some point, when something doesnt work as expected, if Im lucky I discover the mistake.   I have a string that looks like this: [APPLE PIE] Sei Shoujo Sentai Lakers 3 Battle Team Lakers 3 (100% FULL-PIC)_20121104_032834 I want to remove the digits at the end of the string, basically the 16 digits at the end of the string. In the end it should look like this: [APPLE PIE] Sei Shoujo Sentai Lakers 3 Battle Team Lakers 3 (100% FULL-PIC) This is my code that I have written so far var str="[APPLE PIE] Sei Shoujo Sentai Lakers 3 Battle Team Lakers 3 (100% FULL-PIC)_20121104_032834"; var n=str.substr(1,74); document.write(n); The problem is the string will be different so each will have different amount of characters. So how I remove the digits at the end of the string in javascript?
