Configure New Server for .htaccess

I have a new LAMP CENTOS 5 server I am setting up and trying to copy the configuration from another web server I have. I am stuck with what I think is a mod_rewrite problem. If I go to http://old-server.com/any_page_name.php it correctly routes through some handling code in index.php and shows me a graceful "Page Cannot Be Displayed" message. But if I go to http://new-server.com/any_page_name.php I get an ugly Apache 404 Not Found error message. I looked in both httpd.conf files and they both have only one reference to mod_rewrite. LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so So it seems like that should be fine. At the bottom of httpd.conf I have the code: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /var/www/html ServerName new-server.com ErrorLog logs/new-server.com-error_log CustomLog logs/new-server.com-access_log common </VirtualHost> Then in the root of /var/www/html I have the exact same .htaccess file that looks like this: RewriteEngine on Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . index.php [L] ErrorDocument 404 /page-unavailable/ <files ~ "\.tpl$"> order deny,allow allow from none deny from all </files> So I don't see why the page load at old-server.com works fine while new-server.com doesn't route through index.php like I want it to do. Apache Virtual Host Issue

I think I hate Apache now, but on with the issue. It might be a configuration error on my end or just my inability to see what's right in front of me, but I'm trying to configure a sub-domain in Apache and no matter what, it always redirects the sub-domain to the web root of the main domain. sub application and virtual directory file permissions

I have a website setup in IIS7, exampledomain.com. Under the application exampledomain.com lives a sub application cms. In a rather convoluted way, we have content in our cms system in this sub-app, under cms\content\{generatedfoldername}. So to access an image in this content, the full URL would be http://www.exampledomain.com/cms/cms/content/{generatedfoldername}/image.jpg, (yes, cms twice...) and this works just fine. Now, we have a virtual directory under the parent website, called stuff which points at the content of the cms. So I should be able to get to the image using the url http://www.exampledomain.com/stuff/{generatedfoldername}/image.jpg. Unfortunately this gives a server 500 error "There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed." Whilst you do have to log into the cms system to access any of the admin pages within, I don't think the image files are protected by login, or else the first example URL wouldn't work, right? Also it's a server 500 error, rather than a 403. I'm sure I must be missing something obvious here- will the virtual directory be using the permissions defined in the parent application, or the subapplication to which it is pointing? Or is there some other permissions I may have missed? Sorry, that was a bit long, thanks for reading all the way down here! (I also must point out that I'm pretty new to the server management stuff.) edit: also, we have <location path="." inheritInChildApplications="false"> specified in the webconfig of the parent app, so it's hopefully not the issue described in this config file hierarchy article.

RewriteRule causes POST data to get dumped before I can access it

I'm currently setting up my own 'webserver' (a Ubuntu Server on some old hardware) so I can have a mess around with PHP and get some experience managing a server. I'm using my own little MVC framework and I've hit a snag... In order for all requests to make it through the dispatcher, I am using: <Directory /var/www/> RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !\.(png|jpg|jpeg|bmp|gif|css|js)$ [NC] RewriteRule . HomeProjects/index.php [L] </Directory> Which works great. I read on Stackoverflow to change the [L] to [P] to preserve post data. However, this causes every page to return: Not Found The requested URL <url> was not found on this server. So after some more searching, I found, "Note that you need to enable the proxy module, and the proxy_http_module in the config files for this to work." The problem is, I have no idea how to do this and everything I google has people using examples with virtual hosts and I don't know how to 'translate' that into something useful for my setup. I'm accessing my webserver via my public IP and forwarding traffic on port 80 to the web server (like I'm pretending I have a domain/server). How can I get this enabled/get post data working again? Edit: When I use the following, the server never responds and the page loads indefinately? PHP pages are not parsed by Apache on CentOS

I have installed Centos 5.x, Apache 2.2, PHP 5.3 and MySQL 5.5. I also installed phpMyAdmin. I am able to access phpMyAdmin through the browser without any issues. However, when I create a simple index.php with phpinfo() function in the default directory, that page is served without php parsing. As we all know, phpMyAdmin is a php application. This is working fine from the same server but not the simple php page from the doc root directory ??!!!. Of course, I tried moving this page into phpMyAdmin folder and tried accessing it, but no success. Please note that I updated httpd.conf file with appropriate directives based on the php installation guide.Following directives were added to httpd.conf. visually documenting web server configuration and infrastructure

I have just finished a large re-organization and update of our institutions web server(s). This server hosts 3 virtual hosts, 3-4 blogs, 2 wikis, some legacy static HTML pages, and many hosted documents (PDF, .jpg, .xls). I have organized the site into a structure of something like: /var/www/sites/vhost1, vhost2, vhost3 .../wordpress/blogX .../mediawiki/wikiX Data is in a seperate directory structure so I can run a cron task over it to make sure it is all writeable and such. I then symlink to these data directories for each application. /var/www/data/vhost1, vhost2, vhost3 .../wordpress/blogX/uploads .../mediawiki/wikiX/images All Apache configs are in /etc/httpd/conf.d/vhosts.d/vhost1,2,3.conf On top of this there is also a testing server which mirrors this setup. Once changes are fully tested, they are rsynced down to the live server. All the wordpress installs and mediawiki installs are straight form SVN and updates are done by switching branches or "svn up". So my question is how can I best document to share with a) co-workers, b) possible future replacement, c) myself 6 months from now. Obviously I can make a wiki page, excel document, whatever and fill it with text, but I am looking for a more visual representation that I can use to explain the architecture to less-technical people. Ideally it would be awesome if this visual representation could then be expanded to get more technical details.

using nginx with proxy_pass on a subdomain

Reading log files from web application

Hi! I want to write a small PHP application for monitoring logs on a Debian server, including syslog logs and Apache/PHP messages. The problem here is that Apache user (www-data) has no access to /var/log directory. What would be the best way to grant an access to logs for PHP application? Let's assume that log files can be really large, like hundreds of megabytes. I have some ideas: Write a shell script that would be run via sudo and tail last 512 Kb of log into a separate file that can be read by application - that's ineffective, because of forking a new process and having to read data twice Add www-data to adm group (that can read logs) - that's insecure Start a PHP process via cron every minute to read logs — that's not very good, because it doesn't allow real-time monitoring. Also, this script will be started even when I don't read logs, and consume CPU time (server is in the cloud, and I'll have to pay for it) Create a hardlink for all log files with lowered permissions - I guess, that won't work because logrotate could recreate log files and they'll change inode number. Start a separate nginx/Apache server under privileged user that may read logs. Maybe anyone got a better solution?

Server on blacklist

I have a Debian Wheezy server with several websites with separate domains. Some of these websites uses Wordpress and in turn uses PHP's mail function to send mail. I installed "sendmail" to be able for the server to send mail from PHP. We use Google Apps for our customers, so no need to setup a regular mail server. Now the server is blacklisted at www.spamhaus.org and get this message: This IP address is HELO'ing as "localhost.localdomain" which violates the relevant standards (specifically: RFC5321). No Network Connection in WinXP image from Microsoft running on VirtualBox 3.1.6 OSE (Ubuntu 10.04) due to missing CD Rom

I'd like to test local websites in IE7 and IE8.To do that I thought about using the free Microsoft images: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/default.mspx I converted the VHDs to VDIs to make them run in VirtualBox. ( http://www.qc4blog.com/?p=721 ) This works fine. The problem is that in this Windows XP installation there is no Network Adapter configured. Actually nothing at all is configured because it needs the Windows XP CD Rom to do that. If I would have a Windows XP CD Rom, I would not need to run the Microsoft image, so is there some kind of workaround to get an internet connection? Meanwhile I set "bridged" in VirtualBox. But this doesn't help because "ipconfig /all" in the guest system doesn't show any data because nothing is configured. How can I get a connection to my local Apache (Host system). http://localhost would be enough. By the way: I can't install the "Guest additions". When I do that, the 3 days trial period of the guest system is suddenly gone, so I can't use it anymore and it is senseless. Any ideas? Update: I've tried the Vista image and it gets an internet connection. From Vista image I can get to my site with 192.168.1.3/mywebsite in the browser url. So actually I don't care about the WinXP issue anymore but I would be glad if anyone still knows a solution.

Passenger and ServerAlias not cooperating

I have a ruby application that runs on a server with multiple IP addresses and mutliple vhosts. Here is the configuration of the problematic virtual host: <VirtualHost 10.0.0.10:80> ServerName realname.example.com ServerAlias alias.example.com DocumentRoot /var/www/sites/example/current/public <Directory /var/www/sites/example/current/public> AllowOverride all Options -MultiViews </Directory> ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/example_error_log CustomLog /var/log/httpd/example_access_log common RailsEnv production RackEnv production </VirtualHost> When I pull up realname.example.com the Ruby on Rails application works correctly. On the other hand alias.example.com just gives me Not Found: / I'm fairly certain the correct vhost is getting used because alias.example.com produces a 404 in the correct log file. I've tried adding logging to the Passenger config and it seems to indicate that Passenger is getting the request. Note: I can't redirect alias.example.com to realname.example.com. realname is accessed using a CDN, whereas alias is directly accessed. Anyone have any ideas why this isn't working? I've been banging my head for days and I've got a similar configuration in QA that works as expected.

apache front-end rewriting URL to different https ports?

Hi all, One of my users is having some trouble with forwarding to an internal web app from a public address. Everything worked fine for him when the situation was like this: front page: http://www.myexample.com/ public ref to internal app: http://www.example.com/app-8903/app.html secretly goes to: http://secret.example.com:8903/app-8903/app.html This is to say, my user is providing the very last URL, with the port information duplicated in the URL base, and they were using that to give a public face that hid both the port and the internal machine name. You could still read the port in the URL base if you looked, but the obvious reference and machine name were hidden. Doing it this way, he could have several different instances of the application running on secret.example.com with different ports, and on the front end it just looked like it was changing the URL directory/base. Now the user wants to do the same thing over https:, and the people helping him with apache config say it can't be done. Is that so? Without being there to tinker with the configuration myself, I'm not sure what his IT people have tried, but reading through the apache2 SSL FAQ and other docs, it seems like it should be possible to rewrite URLs to different ports and still use https:.

Why would the Apache parent process restart silently?

I run apache 2.2.9 with mpm prefork on debian lenny. Following http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/prefork.html, I would expect that there is one parent process, running as root and listening as configured, which would start child processes as defined by the Min/Max/etc. directives. I expect the children to be restarted as per MaxRequestsPerChild, but the parent process to stay put with one process id until I restart it manually. Out of a little paranoia, I started monitoring listening ports including process ids. I have a cron job every 20 minutes to run netstat -ap | grep LISTEN and diff the output. Sometimes (about once per day) I see a series of this: 8c8 < tcp6 0 0 [::]:www [::]:* LISTEN 6194/apache2 --- tcp6 0 0 [::]:www [::]:* LISTEN 6607/apache2 10c10 < tcp6 0 0 [::]:https [::]:* LISTEN 6194/apache2 --- tcp6 0 0 [::]:https [::]:* LISTEN 6607/apache2 Over a period of an hour or three, the parent would change its pid at least once every 20 minutes, without any explanation in the log files or any other hint that anything is going wrong. This is not what I expected. What am I missing?

Notepad++ incorrect syntax highlithing?

So I want to build a XHTML 1.0 Strict based website. Using Notepad++ for syntax highlighting came as an idea to me. But when I tried to put the XML declaration (as stated in the spec, proper XHTML pages should use a XML declaration and be served as application/xhtml+xml) I can't get the entire document highlighted propperly. Virtual folder for multiple sites

I am creating a very simple flat file CMS for small (multilingual) websites. The little file writing that goes on is handled by 4 scripts in a publicly available folder in each site named /edit. Given that I have 2 websites now working on that simple system: websiteA/index.php (etc) websiteA/edit/ websiteB/index.php (etc) websiteB/edit/ What is the best way of making that /edit folder "virtual" in order that these and each subsequent website owner can login to their view of /edit and yet the code only exists in one place. I do not want the website owners to have to login from a central website, but from their own /edit directory. I have already read about different solutions seemingly using the <Directory> directive in my httpd.conf declaration for each website, and also using straight mod_rewrite but admit to now becoming confused about some of the terminology. Each website has its own config file which contains path settings and so on. What in your opinion is the best way to handle this? EDIT In light of a reply, I suppose that given a virtual host directive such as this: <VirtualHost 00.00.00.00:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/websitea.com ServerName www.websitea.com ServerAlias websitea.com DirectoryIndex index.htm index.php CustomLog logs/websitea combined </VirtualHost> Is it possible to create an alias inside that directive for the folder websitea.com/edit ?

Virtual host Alias not routing properly

I apologize if this question has been asked many times in the past. I am not 100% sure of the exact cause of my issue and am out of google magic right now. Basically I have a virtual host file setup with an Alias record that points to a different directory other the document root. It basically looks like this <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName iBusinessCentral.com ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /var/www/marketingsites/ ServerAlias iBusinessCentral.com *.iBusinessCentral.com Alias /unsub "/var/www/unsub/site_index/" </VirtualHost> When I navigate to ibusinesscentral.com/unsub/?randomquerystring I am directed to the correct folder. If I remove the query string and navigate to ibusinesscentral.com/unsub/ I am taken to the directory in the document root. The unsub directory is a zend application and I need to be able to navigate to different url paths like ibusinesscentral.com/unsub/unenroll?querystring I have tried using AliasMatch instead of Alias. I have also tried adding a slash after the unsub portion of the Alias record, and have not had any luck to this point. Thanks in advance for any assistance

Domain name is bringing up wrong site

I have a VPS that hosts several domains. I have set up Apache in the following manner: First VirtualHost /etc/apache2/sites-available/somedomain.com <VirtualHost somedomain.com:80> ServerName somedomain.com ServerAlias www.somedomain.com ... </VirtualHost> Second VirtualHost /etc/apache2/sites-available/someotherdomain.com <VirtualHost someotherdomain.com:80> ServerName someotherdomain.com ServerAlias www.someotherdomain.com ... </VirtualHost> Then I symlink the config files from sites-available to sites-enabled and all is well. I had a need to 'turn off' someotherdomain.com, so I removed the symlink to /etc/apache2/sites-available/someotherdomain.com from sites-enabled and the site no longer shows up... BUT typing someotherdomain.com into a web browser brings up somedomain.com!!! I need it to not resolve at all. Does somethiing need to be done in the VirtualHost to just automatically return a 500 or something along those lines. I really don't want people to reach one website from a different domain. Thanks! Struts 1 ActionForm - retrieving a collection from pure HTML

Hi all I have (just like the rest) inherited some struts 1 code. I have had need to add a few more pages to this project. What I cannot figure out is how to map several distinct but similarly natured input elements to the my ActionForm. Let me elaborate. I create a new <Input> element dynamically as the user inputs more and more items (I use the YUI autocomplete form element and for each entered input I add it as an input element to my form and draw a new YUI autocomplete - complex sounding, I know) So... The problem is taht I get the following error qhile deploying my project to Glassfish: java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to load EJB module. DeploymentContext does not contain any EJB Check archive to ensure correct packaging But, let us start on how the project structure looks like in Maven2... I've build the following scenario: MultiModuleJavaEEProject - parent module - model --- packaged as jar - ejb1 ---- packaged as ebj - ejb2 ---- packaged as ebj - web ---- packaged as war So model, Debugging HTML & JavaScript with Firebug

I made a JSONP widget. However, when one of the partner sites put it in their page, (1) it doesn't render at all in IE and (2) in other browsers (Firefox & Google Chrome), the HTML of the widget renders incorrectly: the <aside> closes prematurely, before the Financial Aid Glossary. It's something specific to that page because it works fine on this example college resource center page. To fix these two issues, I tried saving the page source to a local file and messing around with the local file and with Firebug, deleting DOM elements and stuff. I even tried fixing the errors that The W3C Markup Validation Service found. But, I still couldn't get it to render correctly. How should I tell them to change their page so that the widget renders correctly? Or, how should I update the widget script I wrote? Content Container Overlaps Menu?

I'm currently working on a Joomla template using CSS divs. I have a header set up with our logo image in a div floated to the left, an adspace floated to the right, and the menu bar on the bottom. My content is divided into three div columns that are contained in "container.": the left column is floated left, the center is not floated, and the right is floated to the right. Hosted bug tracking system with mercurial repositories (Summary of options & request for opinions)

The Question What hosted mercurial repository/bug tracking system or systems have you used? Would you recommend it to others? Are there serious flaws, either in the repository hosting or the bug tracking features that would make it difficult to recommend it? Do you have any other experiences with it or opinions of it that you would like to share? If you have used other non mercurial hosted repository/bug tracking systems, how does it compare? (If I understand correctly, the best format for this type of community-wiki style question is one answer per option, if you have experienced if several) Background I have been looking into options for setting up a bug/issue tracking database and found some valuable advice in this thread and this. But then I got to thinking that a hosted solution might not only solve the problem of tracking bugs, but might also solve the problem we have accessing our mercurial source code repositories while at customer sites around the world. Since we currently have no way to serve mercurial repositories over ssl, when I am at a customer site I have to connect my laptop via VPN to my work network and access the mercurial repositories over a samba share (even if it is just to synce twice a day). This is excruciatingly slow on high latency networks and can be impossible with some customers' firewalls. Even if we could run a TRAC or Redmine server here (thanks turnkey), I'm not sure it would be much quicker as our internet connection is over-stretched as it is. What I would like is for developers to be able to be able to push/pull to/from a remote repository, servicing engineers to be able to pull from a remote repository and for customers (both internal and external) to be able to submit bug/issue reports. Initial options The two options I found were Assembla and Jira. Looking at Assembla I thought the 'group' price looked reasonable, but after enquiring, found that each workspace could only contain a single repository. Since each of our products might have up to a dozen repositories (mostly for libraries) which need to be managed seperately for each product, I could see it getting expensive really quickly. On the plus side, it appears that 'users' are just workspace members, so you can have as many client users (people who can only submit support tickets and track their own tickets) without using up your user allocation. Jira only charges based on the number of users, unfortunately client users also count towards this, if you want them to be able to track their tickets. If you only want clients to be able to submit untracked issues, you can let them submit anonymously, but that doesn't feel very professional to me. More options Looking through MercurialHosting page that @Paidhi suggested, I've added the options which appear to offer private repositories, along with another that I found with a web search. Prices are as per their website today (29th March 2010). Corrections welcome in the future. Anyway, here is my summary, according to the information given on their websites: Assembla, http://www.assembla.com/, looks to be a reasonable price, but suffers only one repository per workspace, so three projects with 6 repos each would use up most of the spaces associated with a $99/month professional account (20 spaces). Bug tracking is based on Trac. Mercurial+Trac support was announced in a blog entry in 2007, but they only list SVN and Git on their Features web page. Cost: $24, $49, $99 & $249/month for 40, 40, unlimited, unlimited users and 1, 10, 20, 100 workspaces. SSL based push/pull? Website https login. BitBucket, http://bitbucket.org/plans/, is primarily a mercurial hosting site for open source projects, with SSL support, but they have an integrated bug tracker and they are cheap for private repositories. It has it’s own issues tracker, but also integrates with Lighthouse & FogBugz. Cost: $0, $5, $12, $50 & $100/month for 1, 5, 15, 25 & 150 private repositories. SSL based push/pull. No https on website login, but supports OpenID, so you can chose an OpenID provider with https login. Codebase HQ, http://www.codebasehq.com/, supports Hg and is almost as cheap as BitBucket. Cost: £5, £13, £21 & £40/month for 3, 15, 30 & 60 active projects, unlimited repositories, unlimited users (except 10 users at £5/month) and 0.5, 2, 4 & 10GB. SSL based push/pull? Website https login? Firefly, http://www.activestate.com/firefly/, by ActiveState looks interesting, but the website is a little light on details, such as whether you can only have one repository per project or not. Cost: $9, $19, & £39/month for 1, 5 & 30 private projects, with a 0.5, 1.5 & 3 GB storage limit. SSL based push/pull? Website https login. Jira, http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/, isn’t limited by the number of repositories you can have, but by ‘user’. It could work out quite expensive if we want client users to be able to track their issues, since they would need a full user account to be created for them. Also, while there is a Mercurial extension to support jira, there is no ‘Advanced integration’ for Mercurial from Atlassian Fisheye. Cost: $150, $300, $400, $500, $700/month for 10, 25, 50, 100, 100+ users. SSL based push/pull? Website https login. Kiln & FogBugz On Demand, http://fogcreek.com/Kiln/IntrotoOnDemand.html, integrates Kilns mercurial DVCS features with FogBugz, where the combined package is much cheaper than the component parts. Also, the Fogbugz integration is supposedly excellent. *8’) Cost: £30/developer/month ($5/d/m more than either on their own). SSL based push/pull? SourceRepo, http://sourcerepo.com/, also supports HG and is even cheaper than BitBucket & Codebase. Cost: $4, $7 & $13/month for 1, unlimited & unlimited repositories/trac/redmine instances and 500MB, 1GB & 3GB storage. SSL based push/pull. Website https login.
