Should you use a PHP Framework?

I have asked before about selecting a framework but I have never actually asked should you a framework? In the past I have never used one but I am being drawn more and more to the idea to speed up development time. I am really concerned about the performance of the application though. Does anyone have any views on whether it is a good idea or not to use a framework? The performance of the apps built on top of it will be crucial. Thanks

Php using unserialize() and serialize() changing values in a saved file

I have a serialized array of values saved to a file and need to change the value of one of the variables. In the example I change the value of $two and then save the whole array back into the file with the new value. Hi everyone, I am really not sure if this is the right way to go, since exceptions is really a fresh subject to me. Is it possible to catch multiple exceptions (let the execution of the script continue) and then store the exceptions in a array to be able to return all exceptions caused? By that said, it would be awesome to be able to use exceptions to more than just showing an error that kills the application (script) Thanks!

PHP to Mesh 2 PDF'S Together or not?

I have an already pre-designed PDF, and I would like to fill the PDF with some database information. So I'm curious if I should save the PDF into JPG's and render them out with the data on top of the image and re-create a PDF. Or is there a way to use the PDF already, and print data into the PDF that is already made? I am trying to figure out the best solution to generating this type of PDF. All thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Guys, I want to insert a node with children at a specific location in the XML file. How do I do it? For eg. If I have an XML like: <myvalues> <image name="img01"> <src>test</src> </image> <image name="img02"> <src>test</src> </image> <image name="img03"> <src>test</src> </image> </myvalues> I want to insert: <image name="img11"> <src>test2</src> </image> between <image name="img01"> & <image name="img02">. PHP OOP: Providing Domain Entities with "Identity"

Bit of an abstract problem here. I'm experimenting with the Domain Model pattern, and barring my other tussles with dependencies - I need some advice on generating Identity for use in an Identity Map. In most examples for the Data Mapper pattern I've seen (including the one outlined in this book: http://apress.com/book/view/9781590599099) - the user appears to manually set the identity for a given Domain Object using a setter: $UserMapper = new UserMapper; //returns a fully formed user object from record sets $User = $UserMapper->find(1); //returns an empty object with appropriate properties for completion $UserBlank = $UserMapper->get(); $UserBlank->setId(); $UserBlank->setOtherProperties(); Now, I don't know if I'm reading the examples wrong - but in the first $User object, the $id property is retrieved from the data store (I'm assuming $id represents a row id). In the latter case, however, how can you set the $id for an object if it has not yet acquired one from the data store? The problem is generating a valid "identity" for the object so that it can be maintained via an Identity Map - so generating an arbitrary integer doesn't solve it. My current thinking is to nominate different fields for identity (i.e. email) and demanding their presence in generating blank Domain Objects. Alternatively, demanding all objects be fully formed, and using all properties as their identity...hardly efficient. (Or alternatively, dump the Domain Model concept and return to DBAL/DAO/Transaction Scripts...which is seeming increasingly elegant compared to the ORM implementations I've seen...)

Returning unique values of a multi-dimensional array with CodeIgniter PHP

Hi - I'm developing a property rentals website. The search results page will contain a list of property results. It is my intention to redefine the results, say by town, country, property type etc. So let's say for example the user searches 'France'. All of the relative properties will be returned and displayed in a list. However, I also need to reuse this array, to display only unique town names from the search results array. e.g. Montpellier, Lyon, Rennes, Nice etc. The idea is when use user click on 'Nice', only the 'Nice' properties would return. I would also like to display how many properties are in that town. Streaming local file from PHP while it's been written to by a CURL process

I am creating a simple Proxy server for my website. Why I am not using mod_proxy and mod_cache is a different discussion. Consuming RSS Feed In PHP

I'm trying to use an RSS feed from my blog on the news section on another site. Everything seems to be working fine until I use something like an ellipsis on my blog. The expected output is: One more time…less fail Although this is no joking matter… The actual output is: One more time?less fail Although this is no joking matter… The problem is that ? should be a .... The code I'm using is the same for the first line (the blog title) and the second line (the blog contents) and that code is: $a = utf8_decode($a); print("$a"); Where $a is the string from the RSS feed. Can anyone point in the right direction why that code would work correctly for the body (second line) and not for the title (first line)? Or suggest a better way to do this? Thanks!

My xml document reflects an Object. as referential Recursion is possible in objects and arrays. I need to reflect that in reproduced XML Structure too. Currently I am using Unique IDs to identify each node separately and a node like <recursion refer="IDREF"> and specifying the ID of the referenced Element. But in This way I need My Own Custom XPath resolver cause I want to let the users go deeper into the recursive node through the Identifying IDREF (Hope I am able to make you understand). So is there any better/liteweight solution ?? might be XPointer or XLink (I am not sure). Any help ??

Locking NFS files in PHP

Part of my latest webapp needs to write to file a fair amount as part of its logging. One problem I've noticed is that if there are a few concurrent users, the writes can overwrite each other (instead of appending to file). I assume this is because of the destination file can be open in a number of places at the same time. flock(...) is usually superb but it doesn't appear to work on NFS... Which is a huge problem for me as the production server uses a NFS array. The closest thing I've seen to an actual solution involves trying to create a lock dir and waiting until it can be created. To say this lacks elegance is understatement of the year, possibly decade. Any better ideas? Edit: I should add that I don't have root on the server and doing the storage in another way isn't really feasible any time soon, not least within my deadline.

I want to use pdo in my application, but before that I want to understand how internally PDOStatement->fetch and PDOStatement->fetchAll. For my application, I want to do something like "SELECT * FROM myTable" and insert into csv file and it has around 90000 rows of data. My question is, if I use PDOStatement->fetch as I am using it here: // First, prepare the statement, using placeholders $query = "SELECT * FROM tableName"; $stmt = $this->connection->prepare($query); // Execute the statement $stmt->execute(); var_dump($stmt->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)); while ($row = $stmt->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)) { echo "Hi"; // Export every row to a file fputcsv($data, $row); } Will after every fetch from database, result for that fetch would be store in memory ? Meaning when I do second fetch, memory would have data of first fetch as well as data for second fetch. And so if I have 90000 rows of data and if am doing fetch every time than memory is being updated to take new fetch result without removing results from previous fetch and so for the last fetch memory would already have 89999 rows of data. Is this how PDOStatement::fetch works ? Performance wise how does this stack up against PDOStatement::fetchAll ?

[PHP] DOMDocument load on a page returning 400 Bad Request status

Hiya, I'm trying to use the Last.fm API for an application I'm creating, but am having some problems with validation. If an API request gives an error it returns a code and message in the response XML like this: <lfm status="failed"> <error code="6">No user with that name</error> </lfm> However, the request also returns an HTTP status of 400 (or in some cases 403) which DOMDocument considers an error and so then refuses to parse the XML. Is there any way round this, so that I can retrieve the error code and message? Thanks Pete

PHP: Ideal Folder Structure of MVC framework

Hello guys, I would like to ask what is the ideal folder structure for a MVC framework that should be able to support multiple installations. For example, I install xyz framework and i run two or more sites based on this single installation of xyz framework rather than installing the framework for each site. This is probably done in Codeigniter too but i don't know much about CodeIgniter, so i need your suggestions. I know some of you might even have better idea than what is done by CodeIgniter, so please share.
