Fast user switching is logging users off instead of switching users

I have a netbook running Windows 8.1 Pro that will no longer allow more than one user to be logged in at the same time. The steps necessary to reproduce this are as follows: The current user presses WIN to bring up the start screen. The user clicks his name in the corner and a list of other users appears. As soon as one of the other names is clicked, the user is unceremoniously logged off without any prompts. This behavior seems to have started some time after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8. Before that point, everything worked fine and more than one user could be logged in at the same time. I've tried searching for others experiencing similar problems but this appears to be unique. Command-line access to remote MySQL server

I administer a website on a remote, shared host. My web host offers MySQL, and I am able to access this from my Mac OS X computer using a GUI program, Sequel Pro. That works great. But I want to script some queries, and Sequel Pro is not scriptable. What should I do? I've read about tunneling to mysql via SSH. I have shell access to the server, with an SSH key on my Mac, so ssh [email protected] -p 7978 gets me in. Should tunneling the MySQL port 3306 work? Like this? ssh [email protected] -L 3306:127.0.0.1:3306 (It "times out" after a minute.) Do I need to install mysql on my Mac?

Windows 8 wmvcore.dll

I am running Windows 8 Pro N x64 without Windows Media Player (which might be called Windows Media Center in the case of Windows 8) preinstalled. Apparently certain software packages require WMP to be installed, in my case Premiere Pro, (wmvcore.dll required error); however, Microsoft will only be releasing it at the end of October, which is a month from now, while no other WMP packages seem to install on Windows 8. Tried downloading a Windows 7 x64 SP1 wmvcore.dll to no avail. This is a problem for many people at the moment, and a solution would be appreciated.

Can compiler optimization introduce bugs ?

Hi, Today I had a discussion with a friend of mine and we debated for a couple of hours about "compiler optimization". I defended the point that sometimes, a compiler optimization might introduce bugs or at least, undesired behavior. My friend totally disagreed, saying that "compiler are built by smart people and do smart things" and thus, can never go wrong. He didn't convinced my at all, but I have to admit I lack of real-life examples to strengthen my point. Who is right here ? If I am, do you have any real-life example where a compiler optimization produced a bug in the resulting software ? If I'm mistaking, should I stop programming and learn fishing instead ? Windows 8 permissions vs Windows 7 [closed]

Possible Duplicate: How do I disable administrator prompt in Windows 8? When I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro 64-bit to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, I noticed some permissions issues extremely problematic to my using the OS. When running Windows 7 or Vista with UAC off, I was able to navigate around the filesystem as if I was on Windows XP and prior such that I didn't have to run as administrator and could copy and edit files wherever I wanted. In Windows 8, turning off UAC no longer does this. Does anyone know how to get Windows 8's permissions to act like Windows 7 and Vista when UAC is disabled? NOTE: I did a clean install on my laptop with Windows 8, and it has the same issues.

Set certain WSUS updates to auto-install

We're running a WSUS server for the simple purpose of caching updates. Since we are a very small network of all "power users", we've got the domain group policy for WSUS updates on the clients set to prompt for download/install. i.e. We don't want updates to install without our knowledge. But there are a few cases where it would be nice to be able to set a certain update to auto-install. e.g. Windows Defender updates, Malicious Software Removal Tool, Outlook Junk Email Filter, etc. Basically all the silly little updates that you would always install anyway and don't require a restart. Is there a way to set the general policy to prompt for download/install, but auto-install certain regular updates? P.S. WSUS itself does have the facility to auto-approve certain updates. Windows XP SP3 install keeps rebooting

The base fonts on my Windows XP Pro were corrupted. A suggested fix was to "install" XP again, essentially just to overwrite the WINNT folder hence resetting all the fonts. I downloaded the XP Pro SP3 installer from our corporate MSDN account, ran it straight from the HDD and at the very end it crashed and rebooted. Now it just keeps rebooting over and over after saying "Continuing installation...." I can't boot in Safe Mode, I can't get to a command prompt or anything. I'm out of ideas. Formatting the drive and performing a fresh install is NOT an option.

Visual Studio hangs Windows

I have: Windows XP Pro SP3 with latest updates, drivers, .NET, etc. Pentium 4 2.8GHz 2GB RAM 150GB HD ATI Radeon HD 3400 Recently (as early as a week ago) Visual C++ (both 2005 Pro and 2008 Express) started hanging up my computer. Whenever they are run, after 5-20 minutes of work the computer freezes. Everything becomes unresponsive, including the mouse cursor. No combination of keys does anything. What's strange, is that Winamp/Firefox continues to play whatever it was playing at the time (internet radio, mp3 playlist, etc). The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I've run CCleaner and a full AVG antivirus scan, both of which found nothing suspicious. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

Failed pinging a LAN card of the server from the client using shared internet connection

The server (Windows XP Pro SP3) has two LAN cards (LAN card A and B) and is connected to the internet using ADSL. The ADSL connection is shared to LAN card B using Internet Connection Sharing. The client (Windows XP Pro SP3) has one LAN card, and is connected to LAN card B of the server so that it has access to the internet. The IP address on the LAN cards are defined as follows: Server: LAN card A: 192.168.0.3/24 (manually defined by me) LAN card B: 192.168.0.1/24 (manually defined by Internet Connection Sharing) Client: LAN card: 192.168.0.123/24 (assigned by DHCP) Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 From the server, I can ping 192.168.0.123 successfully. From the client, it can access the internet without any problem. I can also ping 192.168.0.1 successfully but for 192.168.0.3, it failed with the Request Timeout error message. Why did the ping fail, and what should be done to make the ping possible? (all firewalls have been turned off.)

XP boot timer=> set, but does nothing?

I haven't made any hardware changes at all. Now, when the system boots it just sits there and waits for me to hit -enter-. I've searched all over for explanations & possible causes, but found nothing which seems to relate. Anyone here have any idea what may have caused the timer to simply quit working like that ? (BTW, the system clock works just as it ever did and keeps time precisely.) Thanks.

Is it possible to use Logmein to connect to a sleeping (Mac) computer on a wireless network?

I'm using logmein to access my Mac. So I have the local logmein app running on my MacBook Pro, which is on my home wireless network. I access it either from the website (www.logmein.com) or the Logmein Ignition Apps on the iphone or ipad. My problem is that I have to set my MacBook Pro to not sleep at all when plugged in to make this a practical solution, because logmein cant seem to wake it up. I did change the settings in System Preferences to allow "Wake from Lan", but it seems like this won't work with a a Wifi connection. Am I missing anything? Assuming I'm not, is it bad for my computer to basically leave it running and not asleep most of the time?

No option for keeping installed programs when upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8

The Windows 8 is the final version (I don't have access to previews on msdnaa anymore). As you can see on the related question accepted answer, Windows 8 should give an option to keep installed programs. But it does not. The only available options are "Keep only personal datas" and "Nothing". Any idea ? I'm running with SP1. I've got two partitions (one of them only contains data of a virtual machine). Windows 8 can't open any modern UI app

I just upgraded my machine with Windows 7 Pro x64, to Windows 8 Pro x64, with the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant. Everything went great, but none of the Modern UI Apps open, and they do not show any error messages or warnings, they just close right away I opened them. I tried to open Skydrive, Windows Store, Photo App,Music App, Bing, Videos , Finances and all the available Modern UI apps on my screen My screen resolution is 1080p, so it is not a resolution issue, I'm using a Windows account , but i switched to Local account but didn't solved the issue. I ran Windows Update and updated my nVidia video drivers. I also tried an app called "Metro App Troubleshooter" without luck

CF Framework Targeting.

Hi if a smart device project is set to target CF 2.0, Windoes CE 5.0. Should this same application run on Windows Mobile 6 with CF 3.5 installed? I was able to install it (the CF 2 app), but when running receive an error stating that the assemblies could not be loaded and that CF might not be installed. This has led me to belive that smart device projects wil ONLY work on the framework they target, not any versions lower or greater. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reinstallation version Windows 7?

I ordered a Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit os online and just received a DVD & Key Code sticker. The DVD label shows it to be a reinstallation DVD, Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit Dell branded and states that the DVD is only to be used to reinstall the OS on a Dell PC. I built this PC & it previously has had XP Pro installed for the last several years. A couple of weeks ago I had a problem with some Malware & made the mistake of attempting to reinstall the XP Pro only to find out that MS has locked out my key, the same one I have been using on this built PC for the last 3 years. The previous PC was built by a local PC builder & I just reinstalled the OS on the new system. Should I send this Win7 DVD back to where I bought it, or can I use it? What a mess, Thanks DWB

Upgrade AirPort on Macs to support Snow Leopard's Wake on Wireless/WLAN?

Snow Leopard now supports Wake on WLAN, but not all hardware supports this. For example, my Octo Mac Pro from early 2008 has an AirPort card, but it does not support this. Nor does my 2007 2.33GHz MacBook Pro. For reference to what is needed, look at http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/28/a-closer-look-at-snow-leopards-wake-on-demand-feature/ which includes a screenshot of what the System Profiler should show. It's pretty hard to find Apple parts, but is it possible to put newer cards into these machines to have them support Wake on Wireless?

Macbook cannot see specific wireless network after being connected to it for a while

Okay, so there's a single wireless network that my laptop has troubles with. My Macbook Pro used to be fine with it until it changed to using channel 13 (or 11?). Since then, after being connected to it for a while it disappears from my laptop's view. Other networks are showing up fine and other computers (including several Macs) have no troubles connecting to this network. If I clear my system cache using Onyx and then restart (sometimes a couple times) my laptop can see and connect to it again. But it seems that if I disconnect and try reconnecting I have to clear my cache again. One thing to note is that if I put my computer to sleep while connected to this network it has no problems reconnecting on wake up. I've got a 15" Macbook Pro 2,2 with Leopard 10.5.8.

Virtualbox and Serial Port permissions

I have a Windows XP Pro SP3 host machine running a Windows XP Pro SP3 guest machine. The host machine has one serial port, COM1, that I need to use in the guest machine. When I add the serial port to the guest machine and try to start it, I get the following error: Failed to start the virtual machine xxx Cannot open host device 'COM1' for read/write access. Check the permissions of that device (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED). Unknown error creating VM (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED). What are some of the things that might be causing this problem? How can I check "permissions" on a serial port?

Snow Leopard directories after hard disk crash and restore from Migrate Utility

My hard drive on my macbook pro crashed the other day and I got a replacement from Apple with a vanilla snow leopard install. Upon returning home I used the Migration Utility to restore my previous data and configuration. So far, so good! Everything looks and works exactly the same as before the crash. However, I noticed these 2 directories that are taking up quite a bit of space: /Developer (from old Mac) /opt (from old Mac) The question is can I safely remove these? As I said, my macbook pro appears to be restored completely to before the hard drive crash. I can run all my apps and all my files appear to be intact. Therefore it seems the system is not using these directories. Also because of their odd names it doesn't seem that os x is using them for any purpose. Thanks in advance for any help!

Cisco ASA 5505 and slow download speeds for Apple devices

For traffic routing through my ASA 5505, downloads for all Apple devices, including AppleTV iPad gen 1 IMac MacBook Pro are very slow. speedof.me show less than 1 Mbps download (where I should have 20 Mbps +), yet for any Windows-based device, the download speeds are in excess of 20 Mbps. The Windows device, including the iMac and MacBook Pro machines, are connected via ethernet cable. Why are Apple devices experiencing such pain? Is it an ASA setting, or something else? Thanks.

How effective are technical test(s) and is it necessary?

Hi everyone, I recently took a Java technical test (for a company who wanted are looking for senior java developers) and, funny enough, I only realised the technical terms of what I've been doing all along after I've written the test. I'm not too IT jargon when it comes to development but I can pretty much code and create solutions unaware that I'm using design pattern (or the specifics of that design pattern) or technology. I learned things such as JMS, Frameworks, etc. while programming at home and having to google stuff online to problems I have. Others e.g. IoC, Surrogates in Databases, etc., I have used extensively without knowing that it had a name for it. Do you think that these technical test are effective and why? What interesting questions did you find that boggled your brains out while the clock kept ticking? Seeing that IT is vastly evolving at a rapid rate, do we have to constantly be updated with new terms that comes out? Some questions I was asked : What object oriented principle is violated by this architectural mechanism for dot notation? Is indexing tables effective for range query or point query search? What is ThreadLocal and what is it used for? Method overloading vs Method overriding. What is the difference between the 2? What is dynamic binding? Now, imagine my poor head trying to understand these jargons (considering I use it almost everyday) PS The question was not a programming question, where you have a problem and write code to solve it. Rather, a thinking type question and you write answers (against the clock). Update I clearly didn't come out clearly as I should have. There are those that are technically "book smart" but with very little hands-on experience and vice versa. So, the question (in connection to what I've asked) is that are these technical test seeking "book smart" people or people with lots of hands-on experience (some who are not that well clued up with too much book-smart jargons). How effective is it then, for companies to look for developers if most of the questions are too terminology-centric? (if that's the correct term, :))

After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. Please advise on what to do Hardware: Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 15 inch Mid-2012 (non retina)
