• [BUG] Bus Error - What causes this in Ruby?

  I have run into this error 5 or 10 times over the past few years and have never found a clear answer to this problem. Here is the error: $ rake db:migrate /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/libxml-ruby-0.9.5/lib/libxml_ruby.bundle: [BUG] Bus Error ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-12 patchlevel 174) [i686-darwin9.7.0] Abort trap The app I am running this in is using RMagick. I have run into this problem when installing ImageMagick a while ago, and when installing Nokogiri, and when installing MySQL. For Nokogiri it was because I needed a more recent version of libxml. What are your thoughts on this? Any fixes? How can I check the version of RMagick the project is loading? I am on a Mac, 10.5.8. Thanks for the help, Lance

  Hi all, I've seen NoSQL pop up quite a bit on SO and I have a solid understanding of why you would use it (from here, Wikipedia, etc). This could be due to the lack of concrete and uniform definition of what it is (more of a paradigm than concrete implementation), but I'm struggling to wrap my head around how I would go about designing a system that would use it or how I would implement it in my system. I'm really stuck in a relational-db mindset thinking of things in terms of tables and joins... At any rate, does anybody know of a crash course/tutorial on a system that would use it (kind of a "hello world" for a NoSQL-based system) or a tutorial that takes an existing "Hello World" app based on SQL and converts it to NoSQL (not necessarily in code, but just a high-level explanation). I see this having one solid answer, but if you guys feel like it should be community wiki, I'll be happy to change it. Thanks! Chris

  I want to start automating more of my web development process so I'm looking for a build system. I write mostly PHP apps on Mac OS X and deploy Linux servers over FTP. A lot of my clients have basic hosting providers so shell access to their servers is typically not available, however remote MySQL access is usually present. Here is what I want to do with a build system: When Building: Lint JavaScript Files Validate CSS Files Validate HTML Files Minify and concatenate JS and CSS files Verify PHP Syntax Set Debug/Production flags When Deploying Checkout latest version from SVN Run build process Upload files to server via FTP Run SQL scripts on remote DB I realize this is a lot of work to automate but I think it would be worth it. So what is the best way to start down this path? Is there a system that can handle builds and deploys, or should I search for separate solutions? What systems would you recommend?

  Using aspnet mvc2 with the model auto-generated by entity framework: Is it possible to tell entity framework to auto-annotate all fields? eg: If database field says not null then add [Required] If DB field is a nvarchar(x) then add [StringLength(x)] And so on? What if the field name contains the string "email" eg CustomerEmail - can I get EF to auto-annotate that with an appropriate annotation ([Regex()] maybe) As I understand it, if the model fields are annotated, and I use both Html.ValidationMessageFor() and use if (ModelState.IsValid) in my controller, then that is all I need to do to have basic clientside input validation working?   In my code I am using JSF - Front end , EJB-Middile Tier and JPA connect to DB.Calling the EJB using the Webservices.Using MySQL as DAtabase. I have created the Voter table in which I need to insert the record. I ma passing the values from the JSF to EJB, it is working.I have created JPA controller class (which automatcally generates the persistence code based on the data base classes) Ex: getting the entity manager etc., em = getEntityManager(); em.getTransaction().begin(); em.persist(voter); em.getTransaction().commit(); I have created the named query also: @NamedQuery(name = "Voter.insertRecord", query = "INSERT INTO Voter v values v.voterID = :voterID,v.password = :password,v.partSSN = :partSSN,v.address = :address, v.zipCode = :zipCode,v.ssn = :ssn, v.vFirstName = :vFirstName,v.vLastName = :vLastName,v.dob = :dob"),But still not able to insert the record? Can anyone help me in inserting the record into the Data base through JPA.(Persistence object)?

• About sqlite use.

  Hi, There are some things my application needs to do on first start up(first startup after update) . These actions could be described in a .txt file and then when it is the case read the file and do according to it ,or on the other hand (I lean to use this option) a sqlite database could be used to store the information . The apk file would be shipped with an .txt file/prebuild sql db stored in res/raw or res.asset and then copied into proper space and used. This I have figured out how !, though I'm not sure which option of this two would be the fittest ? One thing that is unclear to me is how could sqlite version mismatch affect me, and if it serious enough to take into consideration ? I 'm using Android api level 4 (Android 1.6) and the future application might be used on several different devices , with different api levels.

I'm using Excel 2003, and I've already added the linked server for "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0."

• Returning partial address matches and mismatch position using L2S or SQL

  I need to implement a method that takes an address split up into individual parts and returns any matching items from an address table. If no matches are found, I want to be able to return a value indicating where it failed. Each input param has a corresponding field in the table. The signature would look something like this: List<Address> MatchAddress(string zipCode, string streetName, string houseNumber, string houseLetter, string floor, string appartmentNo, out int mismatchPosition) { // return matching addresses // if none found, return the position where it stopped matching // zipCode is position 0, appartmentNo is position 5 // // an empty param value indicates "don't check" } I know I can construct the method such that I start with all the parameters, execute the query and then remove param by param (from the right side) until either a match is found or I run out of parameters, but can I construct a query that is more effective than that, i.e minimizing the number of calls to the db, maybe even as a single call?

  How can I script the deployment of a Visual Studio database project? I have a DB project in visual studio and I would like to use it in order to deploy on remote machines via a script. I notice that when I 'deploy' from visual studio, it generates a .sql file. I intercepted this file and tried running it from the command line with osql.exe, but I didn't have any success. Should this work, is there a better way to deploy a database programatically from a database project, may be by referencing in another project and calling some method to deploy it?

  I'm asking because I'm working on an ASP.NET MVC 1.0 site, thinking of upgrading to ASP.NET MVC 2.0. Then I read that PLINQO 5.0 was released (I had never heard of PLINQO before) and have been impressed with what PLINQO appears to be capable of. 1) Is PLINQO capable of building out an ASP.NET MVC 2.0 UI project when it's run? 2) Have you had any bad experiences using PLINQO (particularly in an ASP.NET MVC app)? Let me make sure I have the scenario right in my mind: Using PLINQO (assuming it supports ASP.NET MVC 2.0), I should be able to point it to my DB and it will create 3 projects: data, test, and mvc 2.0 UI? The data would contain LINQ to SQL queries, with the PLINQO extensions added in and the other projects setup to use the data project by default?

FOR XML PATH('') but that was inlcuding weird encoded characters (eg. carriage return). ... so i'm not 100% happy with that. I also tried to see if there's a COALESCE solution, but all my attempts failed. So - any suggestions?

  Hi I have a web application running in cluster mode with a load balancer. It consists in two tomcats (T1, and T2) addressing only one DB. T2 is nfs mounted to T1. This is the only dofference between both nodes. I have a java method generating some files. If the request runs on T1 there is no problem but if the request is running on node 2 I get an exception as follows: java.io.IOException: Invalid argument at java.io.FileOutputStream.close0(Native Method) at java.io.FileOutputStream.close(FileOutputStream.java:279) The corresponding code is as follows: for (int i = 0; i < dataFileList.size(); i++) { outputFileName = outputFolder + fileNameList.get(i); FileOutputStream fileOut = new FileOutputStream(outputFileName); fileOut.write(dataFileList.get(i), 0, dataFileList.get(i).length); fileOut.flush(); fileOut.close(); } The exception appears at the fileOut.close() Any hint?   I've been trying left joins but as there are 2 joins, i think the problem is the 2nd join roots from table_B not table_A. i am not getting any results where there is the required data in the db.   Wrote a Truck show Contest voting app, financial etc using sqlite. decided to write backup app for show day using ce 3.5. Created db moved to data directory, created tables configured dgridviews all is well. Entered some test data started management studio 08 ran select query against table and got null returns. Started app from vs studio and found that test data is gone. Re entered data ran query in MS data gone again. If I use VS Studio can start and enter data, close app restart and data is still there, seems only when using outside tool on select query data deletes. I don't know ce that well but this cannot be right. select * from votes = delete * from votes??????????????

• Should I trust Redis for data integrity?

  In my current project, I have PostgreSQL as my master DB, and Redis as kind of a slave, e.g., when some user adds another as a friend, first the relationship will be stored in PostgreSQL and then a friend list in Redis will be updated. When some user's friend list is requested, it will be pulled out of Redis instead of PostgreSQL. The question is: when I update the friend list in Redis, should I get a fresh copy outof PostgreSQL, and replace the old list in Redis with the new one or should I keep the old list and simply SADD the userid into the list? The latter is of course best for performance, but intuitively the former does a better job in keep the data integrity? And if something like Celery is used, is the second method worth the risk?

• nginx-tornado-django request timeout

  We are using nginx-tornado-django to provide web services. That is, no web page frontend. The nginx server serves as a load-balancer. The server has 8 cores, so we launched 8 tornado-django processes on every server. Memcached is also deployed to gain better performance. The requests per day is about 1 million per server. We use MySQL as backend DB. The code is tested and correct. Our profiling shows that normally every request are processed within 100ms. The problem is, we find that about 10 percent of the requests suffers from time-out issue. Many requests didn't even reach tornado. I really don't have much experience on tuning of nginx/tornado/MySQL. Right now I don't have a clue on what is going wrong. Any advise is appreiciated.

  We are designing set of web services which will return XML string in response. These are RESTFul services so I will have to send exception inside element. I am planing to design set of Error code which can help me determine where level occured just by looking at the code. For Example 1000 - Application Level 2000 - DB level 3000 - Network level so if I have error message then I can know right away that this was an application level error and it came from 1st business module. I am not very experience in this so I would love to here your thoughts and criticism. Thanks

• Problem with ajax and posting non-latin characters

  Posting non-latin based languages with ajax + jquery doesn't save to mysql the correct text. What I have done is this: I am getting multiple translated words from Google's translation api. The ajax request is showing the correct translations for all languages. But when i try and insert this into the db it shows up in php my admin as garbled text I added AddDefaultCharset UTF-8 to .htaccess file on the root. I tried setting the header in php to utf-8 and this did not work. I have tried adding a contentType to ajax setup but this didn't work also. Any suggestions appreciated. jason

  We are using Horizontal cluster in our PROD with WAS 6.1 as the Application server. We have enabled dynacache service for some of the JSP fragments using SHARED-PUSH in cachespec.xml file. Now we want to do cache invalidation programmatically..ie. whenever something changes in DB related to cache the cache should get invalidated. so can you please let me know what steps are involved in it to achieve this? any configuration settings at server side or any development changes.

• Sphinx non-fulltext, integer only search

  Hello guys, I've got a few tables that literally only hold integers, no "words" and for some reason Sphinx is unable to hold this data in it's library. Just returns "0 bytes" errors for these indexes. Is it possible to do this? If so, how?
