• .NET4: In-Process Side-by-Side Execution Explained

  Overview: I'm interested in learning more about the .NET4 "In-Process Side-by-Side Execution" of assemblies, and need additional information to help me demystify it. Motivation: The application in question is built against .NET2, and uses two third-party libraries that also work against .NET2. The application is deployed (via file copy) to client machines in a virtual environment that includes .NET2. Not my architecture, please bear with me. Goal: To see if it's possible to rebuild the application assemblies (or a subset) against .NET4, and ship the application as before, without changing the third-party libraries and including the .NET4 Client Profile (as described here) in the deployment. Steps Taken: The following articles were read, but didn't quite provide me enough information: In-Process Side-by-Side Execution: Browsed this article, and Scenario Two is the closest it comes to describing something that resembles my situation, but doesn't really cover it with any depth. ASP.NET Side-by-Side Execution Overview: This article covers a web application, but I'm dealing with a client WinForms application. CLR Team Blog: In-Process Side-by-Side: This is useful to explain how plug-ins to host processes function under .NET4, but I don't know if this applies to the third-party libraries. Further Steps: I'm also unclear on how to proceed upgrading a single .NET2 assembly to .NET4, with the overall application remaining in .NET2 (i.e. how to configure the solution/project files, if any special code needs to be included, etc.).

• Process.CloseMainWindow() not working

  I start the Windows On-Screen-Keyboard like that: s_onScreenKeyboard = new Process(); s_onScreenKeyboard.StartInfo = new ProcessStartInfo("osk.exe"); s_onScreenKeyboard.EnableRaisingEvents = true; s_onScreenKeyboard.Exited += new EventHandler(s_onScreenKeyboard_Exited); s_onScreenKeyboard.Start(); This works fine, but when I try to stop it using the following code, it does nothing: s_onScreenKeyboard.CloseMainWindow(); if (!s_onScreenKeyboard.HasExited) { if (!s_onScreenKeyboard.WaitForExit(1000)) { s_onScreenKeyboard.Close(); //s_onScreenKeyboard.Kill(); } } When uncommenting s_onScreenKeyboard.Kill(); it is closed, but the problem is that osk.exe obviously uses another process called "msswchx.exe" which is not closed if I simply kill the OSK process. This way, I would end up with hundreds of these processes which is not what I want. Another strange thing is that the CloseMainWindow() call worked at some time, but then it suddenly did not work anymore, and I do not remember what has changed. Any ideas? Background: I am implementing an On-Screen-Keyboard for my application because it should work with a touchscreen. It is important that the keyboard layout matches the layout which is configured in Windows since the application will be shipped to many different countries. Therefore, instead of implementing a custom keyboard control with approx. 537 keyboard layouts (exaggerating a little here...), I wanted to utilize the Windows built-in On-Screen-Keyboard which adapts to the selected keyboard layout automatically, saving a lot of work for me.

  I'm able to load and access resx files in Simulator builds of my iPhone app built using MonoTouch. • New to MVVM - Best practices for seperating Data processing thread and UI Thread?

  Good day. I have started messing around with the MVVP pattern, and I am having some problems with UI responsiveness versus data processing. I have a program that tracks packages. Shipment and package entities are persisted in SQL database, and are displayed in a WPF view. Upon initial retrieval of the records, there is a noticeable pause before displaying the new shipments view, and I have not even implemented the code that counts shipments that are overdue/active yet (which will necessitate a tracking check via web service, and a lot of time). I have built this with the Ocean framework, and all appears to be doing well, except when I first started my foray into multi-threading. It broke, and it appeared to break something in Ocean... Ocean freaks out at this, so there must be a better way of doing it. I have not had the chance to figure out the usage of the SQL ORM thing in Ocean so I am using Entity Framework (perhaps one of these days i will look at NHibernate or something too). Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have looked at a number of articles and they all have examples of simple uses. Some have mentioned the Dispatcher, but none really go very far into how it is used. Anyone know any good tutorials? Cory

• Does Perl's Net::Cassandra module support UTF-8?

  I've run into a really strange UTF-8 problem with Net::Cassandra::Easy (which is built upon Net::Cassandra): UTF-8 strings written to Cassandra are garbled upon retrieval. • com0com silent install (test signed com0com.sys shows up as signed in explorer but not in Device Manager)

  My goal is to have the com0com serial driver install without popping up the install wizard on both WinXP and Win2000. I am working on WinXP x86. I have followed the test signing instructions for the com0com driver, replacing amd64 with i386 at line 60. I have added my test certificate as both a root and trustedprovider using the following commands: certmgr /add com0com.cer /r localMachine root certmgr /add com0com.cer /r localMachine trustedprovider And verified that it is listed under both locations. I then run the newly built setup.exe. This installs the signed com0com.sys file into C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS and sets up a pair of virtual serial ports and a bus between them. Using explorer, I go to the DRIVERS directory, right click on the com0com.sys file and verify that it has the "test" digital signature. I then go into Device Manager, open the "com0com serial port emulators" entry, pick an entry and do Properties-Driver and see that it says "Not digitally signed". I click details for the driver and can see that it is referring to the com0com.sys driver file that I just confirmed is signed. I found what might be a related issue but I'm not sure. Does WinXP demand a WHQL signature? If so, does that explain why the com0com.sys file is signed but the device driver entries say they aren't signed?

• UITouch Event Propagation To Background UIViews

  I'm having troubles getting any UIView that's not the foreground UIView to receive UITouch events. I'm building an all-Core Graphics-app, so I'm not using any built in UIViews or IB or anything - everything is programmatically constructed and drawn into. Here's my view hierarchy: Root View Type A Container Type A View Type A View Type A View Type B Container Type B View Type B View Type B View The containers are just vanilla UIView objects that I create programmatically and add instances of Type A and B to when they're created. I did this originally to make hitTesting easier—Type A objects can be drag-and-dropped onto Type B objects. Type A objects receive touch events fine, but Type B objects (which are contained by Type B Container which is behind Type A Container) don't receive touch events. Both containers occupy the entire screen; they're basically just convenience containers. If I pull Type B Container to the front (eg [self.view bringSubviewToFront:Type B Container]) it receives events properly, but then the Type A Container doesn't get events. How do I propagate events from the view that's on top? Both views occupy the entire screen, so it makes sense that the top-most view is catching the events, but how should I get it to pass those events on to Type B Container? I could inject some code in the container that passes the touch events back to the main ViewController which can pass them on to Type B Container but that feels really messy to me. Is there a nicer way to not have the Type A Container stop propagation? What's the best practice here?

  Hi Experts, I just got done with a new Web module built with Spring Framework. Till now I was testing all the pages on my local machine using Tomcat. Today after I moved the application to Websphere, I am getting the following error: Error 404: No target servlet configured for uri is there anything I need to do in web.xml or somewhere? I deployed an EAR file on my WAS , which has another war file. Below is the output I am seeing on the console, if thats any help. The resource WEB-INF/ibm-web-bnd.xmi that is defined in URI WEB-INF/ibm-web-bnd.xmi for module analytics.war is not valid. The resource has a cross reference org.eclipse.jst.j2ee.webapplication.internal.impl.WebAppImpl@4be44be4 (eProxyURI: WEB-INF/web.xml#WebApp_ID) that cannot be resolved. [6/17/09 15:24:49:465 CDT] 00000011 ArchiveDeploy W ADMA0091E: The resource WEB-INF/ibm-web-ext.xmi that is defined in URI WEB-INF/ibm-web-ext.xmi for module analytics.war is not valid. • Django: Unicode Filenames with ASCII headers?

  I have a list of strangely encoded files: 02 - Charlie, Woody and You/Study #22.mp3 which I suppose isn't so bad but there are a few particular characters which Django OR nginx seem to be snagging on. >>> test = u'02 - Charlie, Woody and You/Study #22.mp3' >>> test u'02 - Charlie, Woody and You\uff0fStudy #22.mp3' I am using nginx as a reverse proxy to connect to django's built in webserver (still in development stages) and postgresql for my database. My database and tables are all en_US.UTF-8 and I am using pgadmin3 to view my tables outside of django. My issue goes a little beyond my title, firstly how should I be saving possibly whacky filenames in my database? My current method is 'path': smart_unicode(path.lstrip(MUSIC_PATH)), 'filename': smart_unicode(file) and when I pprint out the values they do show u'whateverthecrap' I am not sure if that is how I should be doing it but assuming it is now I have issues trying to spit out the download. My download view looks something like this: def song_download(request, song_id): song = get_object_or_404(Song, pk=song_id) url = u'/static_music/%s/%s' % (song.path, song.filename) print url response = HttpResponse() response['X-Accel-Redirect'] = url response['Content-Type'] = 'audio/mpeg' response['Content-Disposition'] = "attachment; filename=test.mp3" return response and most files will download but when I get to 02 - Charlie, Woody and You/Study #22.mp3 I receive this from django: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\uff0f' in position 118: ordinal not in range(128), HTTP response headers must be in US-ASCII format. How can I use an ASCII acceptable string if my filename is out of bounds? 02 - Charlie, Woody and You\uff0fStudy #22.mp3 doesn't seem to work... EDIT 1 I am using Ubuntu for my OS.

• Storing a digital signature for bookings on a web based system

  I have a web based bookings system built for a UK higher education client to allow students to sign out equipment (laptops, camera's etc). It's been in use successfully for a couple of years, in the current workflow equipment is collected and the booking is printed, signed by the student and kept until the equipment is returned. They are emailed a pdf copy of the booking and reminders if equipment is outstanding. Students can login and prebook equipment using their university LDAP credentials, the booking is then authorised by staff for later collection, but can also walk in and have equipment booked out by staff. They would like to remove the signed paper part of the process and replace this with some sort of digital signature. The suggestion was a graphics tablet but with a web based system this would require a local software package and in my view be impractical. My thought is that students would enter their LDAP username and password upon collection of the equipment, verifying their identity and effectively digitally signing the booking. My question is what would be best to store as a signature or whether to simply authenticate the user and use a boolean flag to indicate that this has been done could be deemed sufficient?

• Example of testing a RPC call using GWT-TestCase with GAE

  How is that for a lot of acronyms! I am having trouble testing GWT's RPC mechanism using GWT's GWTTestCase. I created a class for testing using the junitCreator tool included with GWT. I am attempting to test using the built in Google App Engine using the created "hosted mode" testing profile created by junitCreator. When I run the test, I keep getting errors saying things like Starting HTTP on port 0 HTTP listening on port 49569 The development shell servlet received a request for 'greet' in module 'com.google.gwt.sample.stockwatcher.StockWatcher.JUnit.gwt.xml' [WARN] Resource not found: greet; (could a file be missing from the public path or a <servlet> tag misconfigured in module com.google.gwt.sample.stockwatcher.StockWatcher.JUnit.gwt.xml ?) com.google.gwt.user.client.rpc.StatusCodeException: Cannot find resource 'greet' in the public path of module 'com.google.gwt.sample.stockwatcher.StockWatcher.JUnit' I hope that someone somewhere has successfully run junit test (using GWTTestCase or just plain TestCase) that will allow for the testing of gwt RPC. If this is the case, could you please mention the steps you took, or better yet, just post code that works. Thanks.

• How do you keep your business rules DRY?

  I periodically ponder how to best design an application whose every business rule exists in just a single location. (While I know there is no proverbial “best way” and that designs are situational, people must have a leaning toward one practice or another.) I work for a shop where they prefer to house as much of the business rules as possible in the database. This requires developers in many cases to perform identical front-end validations to avoid sending data to the database that will result in an exception—not very DRY. It grates me anytime I find myself duplicating any kind of logic—even lowly validation logic. I am a single-point-of-truth purist to an anal degree. On the other end of the spectrum, I know of shops that create dumb databases (the Rails community leans in this direction) and handle all of the business logic in a separate tier (in Rails the models would house “most” of this). Note the word “most” which implies that some business logic does end up spilling into other places (in Rails it might spill over into the controllers). In way, a clean separation of concerns where all business logic exists in a single core location is a Utopian fantasy that’s hard to uphold (n-tiered architecture or not). Furthermore, is see the “Database as a fortress” and would agree that it should be built on constraints that cause it to reject bad data. As such, I hold principles that cause a degree of angst as I attempt to balance them. How do you balance the database-as-a-fortress view with the desire to have a single-point-of-truth?

• How to get around batch file processing limit

  I have a Windows batch file that processes all the files in a given directory. I have 206,783 files I need to process: for %%f in (*.xml) do call :PROCESS %%f goto :STOP :PROCESS :: do something with the file program.exe %1 > %1.new set /a COUNTER=%COUNTER%+1 goto :EOF :STOP @echo %COUNTER% files processed When I run the batch file, the following output is written: 65535 files processed As part of the processing, an output file is created for each file procesed, with a .new extension. When I do a dir *.new it reports 65,535 files exist. So, it appears my command environment has a hard limit on the number of files it can recognize, and that limit is 64K - 1. Is there a way to extend the command environment to manage more than 64K - 1 files? If not, would a VBScript or JavaScript be able to process all 206,783 files? I'm running on Windows 2003 server, Enterprise Edition, 32-bit. UPDATE It looks like the root cause of my issue was with the built-in Windows "extract" command for ZIP files. The files I have to process were copied from another system via a ZIP file. My server doesn't have a ZIP utility installed, just the native Windows commands. I right-clicked on the ZIP file, and did an "Extract all...", which apparently just extracted the first 65,535 files. I downloaded and installed 7-zip onto my server, unzipped all the files, and my batch script worked as intended.

• Custom Installer class , rollback method never called.

The problem is that the RollBack method is not called. I don't see the expected entry in the event log. I want to mention that if i let the installation to complete , I do see the "Install" message in the event log and If i then uninstall , I see the "uninstall" message in the event log. But if stop the installtion process in the middle , by pressing the "cancel" button , I do see the progress bar going backward , but the rollback method is not called. what am I doing wrong ? thanks in advance for any help. Edit: Providing more details... The installer is an MSI package. The package is built in vs2009 using a setup project. The installer class is used as a custom action by the setup project. Since this is a MSI Package I have an option to run it in silent mode or in user-interactive more . When I wrote "Full GUI mode" , I ment User-Interactive mode.

• Bamboo to Build Specific SVN Revision

  Hi! Imagine there's a project in Bamboo with two build plans: Staging Deployment (SD) and Production Deployment (PD). Building SD checks out latest sources, builds them and deploys a web site to a staging server. Currently, PD does all the same, namely deploys the latest version of a web site to a production server. Clearly, this is not very good: I want to be able to deploy the same exact version of a web site that was previously deployed on a staging server, not the latest one. To illustrate: suppose we're at r101 in SVN repo. Clicking "Build SD" will deploy a web site version, say, 2.1.0.101 to staging server. Now we commit a breaking change and end up at r102. Now I want to deploy to a production server. If I hit "Build PD", Bamboo will happily check out r102 and build it, resulting in version 2.1.0.102 being deployed to a production server. What I want it to do, however, is to build and deploy a version which was previously built in an SD plan (that is, 2.1.0.101). Of course I can make SD plan to tag latest-successful build as tags/builds/latest, but I would rather have Bamboo itself handle that.

• Enumerating all strings in resx

  We would like to enumerate all strings in a resource file in .NET (resx file). We want this to generate a javascript object containing all these key-value pairs. How can we enumerate all localization strings in a resx file? UPDATE: Following Dennis Myren's comment and the ideas from here, I built a ResXResourceManager. Now I can do the same with .resx files as I did with the embedded resources. Here is the code. Note that Microsoft made a needed constructor private, so I use reflection to access it. You need full trust when using this. • Transforming coordinates from an image control to the image source in WPF

  I'm trying to learn WPF, so here's a simple question, I hope: I have a window that contains an Image element bound to a separate data object with user-configurable Stretch property <Image Name="imageCtrl" Source="{Binding MyImage}" Stretch="{Binding ImageStretch}" /> When the user moves the mouse over the image, I would like to determine the coordinates of the mouse with respect to the original image (before stretching/cropping that occurs when it is displayed in the control), and then do something with those coordinates (update the image). I know I can add an event-handler to the MouseMove event over the Image control, but I'm not sure how best to transform the coordinates: void imageCtrl_MouseMove(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { Point locationInControl = e.GetPosition(imageCtrl); Point locationInImage = ??? updateImage(locationInImage); } Now I know I could compare the size of Source to the ActualSize of the control, and then switch on imageCtrl.Stretch to compute the scalars and offsets on X and Y, and do the transform myself. But WPF has all the information already, and this seems like functionality that might be built-in to the WPF libraries somewhere. So I'm wondering: is there a short and sweet solution? Or do I need to write this myself? EDIT I'm appending my current, not-so-short-and-sweet solution. • Redirect on Ajax Jquery Call

  Hi, I am newbie to ajax here and I know somebody would have encountered this problem already. • Classic ASP Session not working in IIS 7 Windows Server 2008 R2 x64

  Hi, I've been googleing and searching here info about this but so far couldn't find anything relevant to my problem. We have a website currently working on II6 and Windows Server 2003 (x86) without any problem. Now we want to migrate our server to a Virtual Machine with Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64) and IIS7. Out current app is built in Classic ASP and SQL Server (This one located on a 2nd Server but this is staying the way it is now). The website is configured as a WebSite, not a virtual directory. Using DefaultAppPool with 4 applications. • MSBuild fails, but building inside Visual Studio works fine

  C#, .NET 2.0 I have an ASP.NET website in a solution, with 2 other projects (used as library references). When I build (debug or release) in Visual Studio, everything works fine. However, building with MSBuild fails. This build had been working (it's actually invoked via a nAnt task). The only thing that has changed is that I have a new user control whose Type I am referencing in my code behind. The offending code is in my ASPX code behind. MessageAlert is the UserControl: MessageAlert userControl = this.LoadControl("~/UserControls/MessageAlert.ascx") as MessageAlert; userControl.UserMessage = message; this.UserMessages.Controls.Add(userControl); In order to get Visual Studio to recognize the type 'MessageAlert' I had to: 1) Set the ClassName="MessageAlert" in the @Control markup at the top of the user control (because using the auto-generated UserControls_MessageAlert wasn't working either) 2) Register the user control in the markup of my ASPX, using an @Register 3) Add a "using ASP" to the top of my code behind After those steps, I could successfully reference the MessageAlert type in my codebehind from visual studio. But from MSBuild I get "The type or namespace name 'MessageAlert' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) " The MSBuild execution is very simple - it points the the very same solution file and sets the configuration property to release. It seems, based on the # of steps I had to go through to get Type references to MessageAlert in Visual Studio, that there is something missing in the MSBuild process. But what? Doesn't Visual Studio in fact invoke MSBuild behind the scenes? Is there a better way to reference a UserControl type in the code behind of an ASPX? EDIT: To clarify, the MessageAlert user control is not in the other referenced assemblies/projects. I mentioned them because, together with the website, the compose the Solution file, which is the same sln file being built by MS Build.

• josso newbie setup problems - can't use tomcat's manager page

  I'm trying to setup josso on an apache tomcat server running on windows. I've installed Apache Tomcat/6.0.26 fro zip file to c:\tomcat then installed josso following the documentation at http://www.josso.org/confluence/display/JOSSO1/Quick+Start started tomcat with c:\tomcat\bin\startup.bat, and noticed the following warnings ADVERTENCIA: [SetPropertiesRule]{Server/Service/Engine/Realm} Setting property ' debug' to '1' did not find a matching property. 21/03/2010 15:55:03 org.apache.tomcat.util.digester.SetPropertiesRule begin ADVERTENCIA: [SetPropertiesRule]{Server/Service/Engine/Host/Valve} Setting prope rty 'appName' to 'josso' did not find a matching property. ... Is anybody having the same problem? how can I access tomcat's manager page? • Ericsson f3507g WWAN (3G Broadband) and AT commands

  I have a lenovo x200t tablet with WWAN built into it. I'm trying to connect to the internet using AT commands and a C# program which I am making so that the program can connect to the net and upload information on demand. I don't want to use Lenovo's "Access Connections" as it is too complicated for the end user. So far I have been able to use terminal to turn the card on and off, ring landlines and send SMS messages. However I can't seem to access the internet using it. I could access the net through it before I removed "Access Connections" software/bloatware. The commands I am using to try and access the net are: Connect on COM7 to the modem Send initialisation string "AT+CFUN=1" Send AT*ENAP=1,1 as suggested here (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ericsson%5FF3507g%5FMobile%5FBroadband%5FModule) Windows says it is "Identifying" the network and a yellow exclamation mark appears on the networking icon in the task bar, but the connection fails and drops off. An IP is assigned to the "Local Area Connection 2" of 169.254.1.192 with a subnet of 255.255.0.0 - no gateway or DNS. Definately no net connection... Anyone got any ideas?

• Precompile asp.net webpart dll

  Hi, I have built a few custom webparts for WSS 3 using the Visual Studio 2010 Web application template. When I compile the application, Visual Studio creates the assembly file in the bin directory which I copy over later to the production server (another machine) with WSS 3. The compiled webpart dll is copied into the bin folder inside the virtual directory of WSS. I would like to precompile the webpart / dll using the aspnet_precompiler on my development machine to reduce the delay when the page is first requested. I have used the following command to precompile the entire Web Application: aspnet_precompile -v / -p PATH_TO_WEB_APPLICATION C:\WebApp -errorstack The compilation runs fine without any errors and I end up with a couple of .compiled files and also a Web_App_xxxxx.dll file inside the C:\WebApp\bin folder. From here onwards I am a bit lost how to proceed. Could you give me an advise to which folder I need to copy the compiled files on the production server? Do they need to go into the bin folder on the server or better inside the temporary asp.net folder %SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\versionNumber\Temporary ASP.NET Files folder? Can I precompile the Web application on a development machine without the IIS metabase? Cheers, Mathias

• Core Data Migration - "Can't add source store" error

  Hi, In my iPhone app I'm using Core Data and I've made changes to my data model that cannot be automatically migrated over (i.e. added new relationships). I added the data model version (Design - Data Model - Add Model Version) and applied my new data model changes to the new version 2. I then created a mapping object model and set the Source and Destination models to their correct data models (old and new respectively). When I run the app and call the persistentStoreCoordinator, my app barfs with the following: 2010-02-27 02:40:30.922 XXXX[73578:20b] Unresolved error Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=134110 UserInfo=0xfc2240 "Operation could not be completed. (Cocoa error 134110.)", { NSUnderlyingError = Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=134130 UserInfo=0xfbb3a0 "Operation could not be completed. (Cocoa error 134130.)"; reason = "Can't add source store"; } FWIW (not much i think) I've also made the usual code changes in persistentStoreCoordinator to use the NSMigratePersistentStoresAutomaticallyOption and NSInferMappingModelAutomaticallyOption (for future data model changes that can be automatically migrated). More relevantly, my managedObjectModel is created by calling initWithContentsOfURL where the file/resource type is "momd". I've tried updating both the source and destination model in the mapping model (Design - Mapping Model - Update XXX Model) as well as deleted the mapping model and recreated it. I've cleaned and re-built but all to no avail. I still get the above error message. Any pointers/thoughts on how I can further debug or resolve this problem please? I haven't posted any code snippets because this feels much more like a build environment issue (and my code is very standard - just the usual core data code to handle migrations using a mapping model but I'm happy to show the code if it helps). • Adding a navigation bar to a web view in a tab bar app

  I've built the tab bar application in IB, with three tabs. The third tab happily displays a UIWebview where you can browse. The only thing missing is a back button, as not all web pages supply such a link. I need a navigation bar hooked up properly to the correct classes. I'm still a bit unsure about exactly how the hierarchy should look in interface builder and how to hook it up properly. Currently, the third tab is hooked up to a referencing outlet called 'webnews' in the class 'thirdviewcontroller', and the UIWebView (under a normal IUView in the hierarchy, which in turn is under the third tab bar controller) is connected to the webnews outlet. How do I make the navbar control the webview, and do I add code to the thirdviewcontroller.m that lets the navbar on the view control the webview 'back' function? What do I hook up as the delegate for it? Currently I have an app delegate, but that's hooked up to the tab bar. I'm not really after specific code as much as a general 'how it works' clue :) (Unless I can just add the navbar dynamically to the functioning app... but I don't think addSubView on viewWillAppear {} in thirdviewcontroller.m will create the proper functionality?) If I were to guess at the simplest solution, I'd guess create a navbarcontroller.h/.m, slap a navbar on the view in IB, connect the third tab to navbarcontroller, connect the navbar to the webview (?) and move the webnews outlet to navbarcontroller.h, and connect the webview to it. But I don't quite have the nerve to try, better to ask advice first.
