  I'm trying to figure out how to integrate django-registration with django-paypal. Being a Django n00b, I'm trying to figure out how to implement a flow like this: User signs up using django-registation with 'active' flag set to 0 After registering, send user to PayPal for a subscription When they come back from PayPal successfully, I want to set 'active' to 1 I've been looking at the django-registration documentation and don't quite understand how to use different backends or implement a flow the way I want. Any tips on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated. django-paypal won't be a problem for me as I've done PayPal integration before (in PHP for a self-published book about CakePHP).

• Understanding NSHTTPCookieStorage for the iPhone

  Maybe I'm missing something, but from Apple's documentation for NSHTTPCookieStorage, I can't help but wonder how this is safe to use. Does this mean that cookie storage is shared across all apps on the iPhone? If my app makes an Http call that results in some cookies being saved, do all apps now have access to these cookies? Methods like: cookiesForURL: Returns all the receiver's cookies that will be sent to a specified URL. make it look even more suspicious. Can someone explain how this is OK, and what the class does? Also, assuming my understanding is flawed and this is indeed sandboxed per-app, do calls made using NSURLRequest automatically save/retrieve cookies from this store or is it the developers responsibility to set request headers before dispatching the request?

• Django South Foreign Keys referring to pks with Custom Fields

  I'm working with a legacy database which uses the MySQL big int so I setup a simple custom model field to handle this: class BigAutoField(models.AutoField): def get_internal_type(self): return "BigAutoField" def db_type(self): return 'bigint AUTO_INCREMENT' # Note this won't work with Oracle. This works fine with django south for the id/pk fields (mysql desc "| id | bigint(20) | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment |") but the ForeignKey fields in other models the referring fields are created as int(11) rather than bigint(20). I assume I have to add an introspection rule to the BigAutoField but there doesn't seem to be a mention of this sort of rule in the documentation (http://south.aeracode.org/docs/customfields.html). Update: Currently using Django 1.1.1 and South 0.6.2

  INFORMIX-SQL 7.3 Perform Screens: According to documentation, in an "after editadd editupdate of table" control block, its instructions are executed before the row is added or updated to the table, whereas in an "after add update of table" control block, its instructions are executed after the row has been added or updated to the table, supposedly meaning that any instructions which would alter values of field-tags linked to table.columns would not be committed to the table, but field-tags linked to displayonly fields will change?.. However, when using "after add update of table" I placed instructions which alter values for field-tags linked to table.columns and their displayed and committed values also changed!.. I would have thought that an "after add update of table" would only alter displayonly fields.

• Legacy application with JDBC and JNDI REALM authentication

  Hello All, My application currently relies on JDBC realm authentication. Recent needs have forced us to think about having LDAP authentication as well. We are thinking about using Active Directory for both authentication as well as authorization (roles). As a standalone test, I was able to authenticate my application with AD. But here is the confusion I have going forward. If the user chooses LDAP authentication when he logs in, I authenticate the user with AD, get the user's roles and do I replicate(create a new) windows user in my database?. I have to have the user in the database, because many parts of the application is designed to retrieve the user from database If the users chooses local login, I still should have JDBCRealm somewhere that I should use to authenticate the user. Is it possible to have multiple realms in tomcat? (I sort of know it is possible, but havent seen much documentation around it) Any thoughts, comments, suggestions would immensely help me Thanks K

• Proper use of Q_OBJECT?

  If I derive my class from QObject (or a subclass), the Qt documentation says that I have to put the Q_OBJECT macro into my class declaration. It also ways I need to "run the meta-object compiler" for my class. I have no idea how to do this. Is this something I need to add to the .pro file? Do I need to edit the makefile? This seems overly complicated for a simple derived class. I'm using Qt Creator.

• Purpose of Zope Interfaces?

  I have started using Zope interfaces in my code, and as of now, they are really only documentation. I use them to specify what attributes the class should possess, explicitly implement them in the appropriate classes and explicitly check for them where I expect one. This is fine, but I would like them to do more if possible, such as actually verify that the class has implemented the interface, instead of just verifying that I have said that the class implements the interface. I have read the zope wiki a couple of times, but still cannot see much more use for interfaces than what I am currently doing. So, my question is what else can you use these interfaces for, and how do you use them for more.

• java runtime 6 with socks v5 proxy - Possible?

  I have written an application that (amongst other things) runs a local service in windows that acts as a SOCKS v5 proxy for Firefox. I'm in the debugging phase right now and have found certain websites that don't work correctly. For example the Java Applet for Picture Uploading on Facebook.com fails because is is unable to lookup domains. My app overrides a hidden FF config setting network.proxy.socks__remote__dns setting it to true. The whole purpose of the app is to allow access to websites when behind a firewall (e.g. if the user is in China), so this setting is essential to ensure domains are resolved remotely also (and not just HTTP requests). In the JRE6 settings (documented here) there isn't an equivalent setting, and since remote DNS resolution is a feature of SOCKS v5 and not v4 as the documentation seems to imply I'm worried that it's just not possible. How can I programmatically make sure the JRE uses a SOCKS v5 proxy for all requests (including DNS)? UPDATE: Steps to reproduce this problem: Make sure you are behind a firewall that blocks (or redirects) internet access including DNS Install PuTTY and add a dynamic SSH tunnel on some port number of your choice (e.g. 9870). Then login to a remote server that has full access to the internet Launch Firefox and you will not be able to browse the web In FF network settings set the SOCKS v5 proxy to localhost:9870 In FF go to about:config, change network.proxy.socks__remote__dns to true You will now be able to browse the web. Go to facebook.com, login, go to your profile and attempt to use the picture uploader java applet to add some pictures It will fail with a series of class not found errors looking similar to: load: class com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class not found. I believe this is failing because the JRE is unable to resolve the domain that the class resides on. I'm basing this belief on the fact that the documentation (http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/deployment/deployment-guide/properties.html) talks only about SOCKS v4 (which as far as I know does not support remote DNS). My deployment.properties file is located in %APPDATA%\Sun\Java\Deployment. I can confirm that modifications I make in the Java Control Panel get written into that file. If instead of "Use browser setting" the network settings for Java I override and attempt to use the SOCKS proxy settings manually, I still have the issue. There does not seem to be an easy way to force the JRE to do DNS remotely through the Proxy. UPDATE 2: Without the SOCKS proxy, from my local client www.facebook.com resolves to 203.161.230.171 upload.facebook.com resolves to 64.33.88.161 Neither host is reachable (because of the firewall) If I login to the remote server, I get: www.facebook.com 69.63.187.17 upload.facebook.com 69.63.178.32 Both these IPs change after a few minutes, as it seems Facebook uses round-robin DNS and other load-balancing. With the Proxy settings set in Firefox, I can navigate to www.facebook.com without any difficulty (since DNS is being resolved remotely on the Proxy). Whey I go to the page with the Java applet it fails with the stacktrace messages I've already reported. However if I edit Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, adding the correct IP for upload.facebook.com I can get the applet to load and work correctly (restart of FF is sometimes necessary). This evidence seems to support my theory that the Java Runtime is not resolving DNS on the Proxy, but instead just routing traffic though it. My application is for mass-deployment, and needs to work with java applets on other sites (not just facebook). I really need a work-around for this problem. • Getting started with Windows Azure

  Hi All, I'm going to sound like a complete newbie here but here goes... I've just signed up for a Windows Azure account and was hoping to get a simple hello world aspx page up and running in a browser to see how it all works but I can't seem to find a simple guide to getting a very simple web application running. I've got as far as setting up a "service" and going onto the "deploy" page but it's asking me upload an "application package". I've looked on MSDN but there aren't any simple guides, just reams of documentation talking about "roles" and "development fabric". For somebody that is proficient in HTML/CSS and knows a little abit about asp.net it may just as well be in another language. So, does anybody know how to upload a simple aspx page and then access it in a browser? Jon

• Is there a way to export an XSD schema from a DataContract

  I'm using DataContractSerializer to serialize/deserialize my classes to/from XML. Everything works fine, but at some point I'd like to establish a standard schema for the format of these XML files independent of the actual code. That way if something breaks in the serialization process I can always go back and check what the standard schema should be. Or if I do need to modify the schema the modification is an explicit decision rather then just a later affect of modifying my code. In addition, other people may be writing other software that may not be .NET based that would need to read from these XML files. I'd like to be able to provide them with some kind of documentation of the schema. Is there some relationship between a DataContract and an XSD schema. Is there a way to export the DataContract attributes in classes as an XSD schema?

• KeePass justification

  I work at a place that tries to take security seriously, but sadly, they often fail. Currently, one of the major ways they fail is password management. I personally have about 20 accounts (my personal user id on lots of machines). For shared "system" accounts, there are about 45 per environment; development, test, and production. I have access to 2 of those, so my personal total is somewhere around 115 accounts. Passwords have to be at least 15 characters with some extensive but standard complexity constraints, and have to be changed every 60 days or so (system accounts every year). They also should not be the same for different accounts, but that isn't enforced. Think DoD-type standards. There is no way to remember and keep up with this. It just isn't humanly possible, as far as I'm concerned. This might be a good justification of a centralized account management system, a la LDAP or ActiveDirectory, but that is a totally different battle. Currently the solution is an Excel spreadsheet. They use Excel to put a password on it, and then most people make a copy and remove the password. This makes my stomach turn. I use KeePass for this problem and it manages all of my account very well. I like the features like auto-typing, grouping, plugins, password generation, etc. It uses AES-256 encryption via the .Net framework, and while not FIPS compliant, it has a very good reputation. The only problem is that they are also very careful about using randomly downloaded software. So we have to justify every piece of software on our workstations. I have been told that they really don't want me to use this, be cause of the "sensitive nature" of storing passwords. sigh My justification has to be "VERY VERY strong". I have been tasked with writing a justification for KeePass, but as I am lazy, I would like any input that I can get from the community. What do you recommend? Is there something out there that is better or more respected than KeePass? Is there any security experts saying interesting things on this topic? Anything will help at this point. Thanks.

  I'd like to try writing my own minimal NT subsystem on Windows 7 for purely educational purposes -- something like a bare-bones equivalent of the posix.exe in Microsoft's Subsystem for Unix-based Applications. But I can't seem to find any public documentation on this topic. What API does a subsystem need to implement? How does it get registered with Windows? How does the subsystem image need to be built (what flags need to be set in the PE header, etc.)? I'd most like to find a book or web site with an overview of the entire subject, or even the source code for a "hello world" NT subsystem that someone else has written. But anything at all would be appreciated if you can point me in the right direction here...

• TextToSpeech setOnUtteranceCompletedListener always returns -1 error?

  I've been working with Android's TTS functions with general success however, one piece of it refuses to work for me; I can not successfully assign an OnUtteranceCompletedListener to my TextToSpeech object. I've tried implementing OnUtteranceCompletedListener in one of my classes and I've tried creating a new, stand-alone OnUtteranceCompletedListener instance. Both approaches are simple enough to implement and appear to yield proper listeners without exceptions...yet setOnUtteranceCompleteListener(myListener) ALWAYS returns -1 (ERROR). The documentation for this seems straight forward. Has anyone gotten this to work? I'm targeting SDK 4. Are there known issues with this with SDK4/v1.6?

• How does COM registration work in Windows

  I'm an application packager trying to make sense of how the COM registry keys (SelfReg) interrelate to the given .dll in Windows. ProgID's, AppID's, TypeLibs, Extensions & Verbs are all tied around the CLSID right? Do CLSID's always use Prog/App IDs or could you just have a file extension class? Which bits are optional? Some of it seems to be 'like a router' where there's the two interfaces (internal - .dll) and external (the extension etc). How does this all fit? (The SDK documentation doesn't make sense to me) I ask as this is all pivotal to application 'healing' with Windows Installer (which packagers are all 'big' on, but there's no nitty-gritty breakdowns since its a coder-thing really) ---Edit: Am I safe in assuming that for what COM is registered, it must all link back to the CLSID and cannot be a 'dead-end'? Verbs need extensions which need progid's... What about the AppId's, TypeLibs and Interfaces? How do they interrelate?

I'm learning these things in the hard way. Is there any resource (book/documentation/etc) that gives me the complete picture at once? I am aware of the programmer visible registers and comfortable in programming with them. I just want to learn about invisible registers and their functionality. I want to get a complete picture. • How to create a run loop that only listens to performSelector:onThread: and GUI events?

  I want to create a separate thread that runs its own window. Frankly, the documentation does not make sense to me. So I create an NSThread with a main function. I start the thread, create an NSAutoreleasePool, and run the run loop: // Global: BOOL shouldKeepRunning = YES; - (void)threadMain { NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [NSAutoreleasePool new]; // Load a nib file, set up its controllers etc. while (shouldKeepRunning) { NSAutoreleasePool *loopPool = [NSAutoreleasePool new]; [[NSRunLoop currentRunLoop] runUntilDate:[NSDate distantFuture]]; [loopPool drain]; } [pool drain]; } But since there is no registered port or observer, runUntilDate: exits immediately and CPU utilization goes to 100%. All thread communication is handled by calls to performSelector:onThread:withObject:waitUntilDone:. Clearly, I am not using the API correctly. So, what am I doing wrong?

  I'm a new user of dynatree plugin. When I read the documentation, I found the list of tree and node class member functions, such as tree.getRoot(), node.countChildren(). However, when I tried to use them, it complained that no such methods were found. • QObject cloning

  I know that Qobjects are supposed to be identities not values eg you cannot copy them and by default the copy constructor and asignment are disabled as explained in qt documentation. But is it possible to create a new Qobject from an existing one using a clone method? Would this be a logic error ? If i say QObject b; QObject a; b.cloneFrom(a); or QObject a = new QBject(); QObject b = new QBject(); b->cloneFrom(a); and the clone method copyes stuff like members etc would this be wrong? And if this is ok can i write my own copy constructor and asignment operator that does just that? Note: i actually want to try this with classes that inherit qobject.

• Custom broadcast events in AS3?

  In Actionscript 3, most events use the capture/target/bubble model, which is pretty popular nowadays: When an event occurs, it moves through the three phases of the event flow: the capture phase, which flows from the top of the display list hierarchy to the node just before the target node; the target phase, which comprises the target node; and the bubbling phase, which flows from the node subsequent to the target node back up the display list hierarchy. However, some events, such as the Sprite class's enterFrame event, do not capture OR bubble - you must subscribe directly to the target to detect the event. The documentation refers to these as "broadcast events." I assume this is for performance reasons, since these events will be triggered constantly for each sprite on stage and you don't want to have to deal with all that superfluous event propagation. I want to dispatch my own broadcast events. I know you can prevent an event from bubbling (Event.bubbles = false), but can you get rid of capture as well?

• Using devise with Rails 3 beta

  I'm currently trying to use Devise 1.1.pre3 as authentication in my upcoming project, but I can't get it to work properly. I have done everything it says in the documentation, installed warden and the correct Devise version, run the install and used the generator to create the model. But when I try to access the sign up form (localhost:3000/users/sign_up) all I get is No route matches "/users/sign_up" But when I run rake routing I get the following: ... GET /users/sign_up(.:format) {:controller=>"devise/registrations", :action=>"new"} ... I doesn't have any files matching that controller. Is there any steps I have missed (installed, updated routing etc and created model)

• blackberry mainscreen vertical scroll

  I am trying to create a MainScreen with vertical scrolling. From what I've read in the documentation, MainScreen has a VerticalManager inside, so it should be possible to enable vertical scrolling only with proper construction, i.e: super(MainScreen.VERTICAL_SCROLL | MainScreen.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR); This is not working for me, however. I am creating a screen, adding a couple of LabelFields and no scrollbar, no scrolling at all. I am testing on 8900, OS 5.0. Here is the code I use: public class ExampleScreen extends MainScreen { public ExampleScreen() { super(MainScreen.VERTICAL_SCROLL | MainScreen.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR); create(); } private void add(String text) { add(new LabelField(text)); } private void create() { add("line 0"); add("line 1"); ... etc ... } } The question is am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to enable vertical scrolling with MainScreen or do I need to create a VerticalManager myself?

• Trying to extend ActionView::Helpers::FormBuilder

  Hello I am trying to DRY up some code by moving some logic into the FormBuilder. After reading the documentation about how to select and alternative form builder the logical solution for me seemed to be something like this. In the view <% form_for @event, :builder => TestFormBuilder do |f| %> <%= f.test %> <%= f.submit 'Update' %> <% end %> and then in app/helpers/application_helper.rb module ApplicationHelper class TestFormBuilder < ActionView::Helpers::FormBuilder def test puts 'apa' end end end This, however, gives me an error at the "form_for" uninitialized constant ActionView::Base::CompiledTemplates::TestFormBuilder Where am I doing it wrong?

• GUI to include a .prop` file to a VS 2010 project?

  Visual Studio 2010 has no longer uses .vsprops files and instead uses .props files. To include a .vsprops file in a Visual Studio 2008 project, one could right-click the project icon in the Solution Explorer panel, choose Properties, go to the Configuration Properties | General section, and modify the Inherited Project Property Sheets property to contain a list of .vsprops paths. One could also modify the Visual Studio 2008 project file directly. Is there a way in the Visual Studio 2010 GUI to include .props files to a project? The Inherited Project Property Sheets property seems to have been removed. If manual editing of the project file is the only way to include .props files, where can one find documentation on doing it? I'm not talking about adding a .props file to the list of files in the project, I mean how do I tell the project to use a .props file.
