• MVC shared model different required fields on different type

  I have a model called Car and depending on what type of Car the user select the view is presented differently. For example the user selects from a grid of different cars and depending if it is a Volvo or a Kia or a Ford the view must allow different fields to be editable. For example with a Volvo the color is editable and is mandatory but with a Kia it is not. I would like to use the one Car class to bind the view but want the client side validation to pick up the required fields based on what type of car. I want to go only to one Action method for the Update what is a good way to approach this problem...? create a base class and inherit from it? will this give me binding problems..?

• How do you choose a programming/data structure/algorithm book?

  I really should not be mentioning the name of the book, but the first time I read it (during my under-grad days) I almost concluded that data structure was a bad course to pick. Which brings me to the question I am asking here. What makes a programming or data structure or algorithm book tick? Clearly, lucid explanation is one. But I also realize that organization of the material is very important and so is diagrams. What else? Some pointers would obviously help when I hang out in my neighborhood computer book shop the next time.

How would I go about writing such a crawler to search the web for geo tagged data close to a particular location? What would a general road map look like? How do I pick which slice of the web to crawl? Do I use regular expressions to find things that look like longitudes and latitudes? What does a general sketch of that solution look like?

• Write data to SQL Server directly from BizTalk or use external service?

  An external source will be sending us XML data that BizTalk will pick up and transform into an internal schema. We need this data to be loaded into a SQL Server database as we're going to expose some of the data to our web front-end via a custom WCF service. The question is: what is the recommended approach for doing something like this? Options we're considering are having BizTalk write to the database directly or having BizTalk call a custom WCF service which would handle the save operation. Another briefly considered idea was having BizTalk write to an MSMQ and have a custom service pull from there and store it in the database. What are some of the guidelines or questions that should be asked in assessing these options? There are concerns related to overhead from calling the extra service, duplication of efforts if the schema is modified in the future (which it will be to some extent), and simply the best way to design within a service-oriented architecture that we're struggling with.

• BUILD 2013 &ndash; Summary

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/06/28/build-2013-ndash-summary.aspx BUILD was a wonderful experience.  It was great to see old friends, make new friends, learn about the latest Microsoft technology and party with a bunch of geeks.  It didn't hurt getting some awesome swag. While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD.   This is a question about preferences. Assume a programming language offers these two options to make a string with some variables: "Hello, my name is ". name ." and I'm ". age ." years old." StringFormat("Hello, my name is $0 and I'm $1 years old.", name, age) Which do you prefer and why? I have found myself using both without any clear reason to pick either. Considering micro-optimizations is not within the scope of this question. Localization has been mentioned as a reason to go with option #2 and I think it's a very valid reason and deserves to be mentioned here. However, would opinions differ based on aesthetic viewpoints?

• How to deal with characters picking up and dropping objects in a 2D game

  I'm quite new to game development, so would like to get a consensus on methods of doing this. My game features a 2D character that is able to pick up and drop objects, for example, a stick. My question is: is it advisable / possible to manipulate the image of the character and image of the stick to make it look like the character is now carrying a stick; or is it best to have a separate sprite sheet for the character with the stick and the character without? EDIT: To be clear - I have a lot of characters, with a few items (4 separate items and over 20 characters)

• which way should I look at visits by region in Google Analytics?

  I need to generate a report for only the Americas in Google Analytics. When I create an advanced segment that includes Continent Exactly Matching Americas I get one number, If I create the segment that includes sub-Continent region Includes America I get a slightly different number, And if I look at all visits but choose Demographicslocationand segment by sub-continent region I get yet a 3rd number! (Note: this is because it also includes Caribbean) All are only different by around 1% of traffic. What is the most accurate way to do this, or should I just pick a way and be consistent?

• How can I add missing Fn-key controls?

  I have a Toshiba NB200 netbook. The majority of the Fn-key controls come through fine and are recognized by my OS (I'm running Kubuntu 12.04/KDE 4.9) but according to the markings on my keyboard there are a few more that xev isn't detecting, i.e. Fn + F9 (touchpad toggle) Fn + 1 (increase screen resolution) Fn + 2 (decrease screen resolution) Fn + Space (zoom) Now, I don't particularly need those last three but I thought it would be quite useful to remap them to, say, Media Previous, Media Next, and Media Play, but I can't do that if the signals aren't getting through. Is there any way for me to persuade the OS to recognize these keystrokes? I've tried using acpi_listen to detect scancodes but it doesn't pick up any of function-related Fn-key strokes (like Audio Mute, which does work by the way).

• Move window from display :0.0 to display :10.0?

  I'm using Cygwin to login to my lubuntu box: ssh -y *user*@192.168.12.37 I can easily use byobu to redeem my cli session. Is there a way to move a running window from display :0.0 to my remote session (:10.0)? I ask because my lubuntu box is hooked to the HDTV in the living room, and I give my kids priority to do their educational stuff on the big screen. I then (try to) pick up where I left off on a netbook Cygwin session. Usually I have to quit everything and restart on the netbook.

• To canvas, or not to canvas, when building browser-based games?

  Background: I have extensive development background, but the last time I coded a game was many years ago. My Javascript skills are quite limited, and I intend to improve them by building a simple game — Tetris, Pac-man, or something of that complexity level. Question: It seems to me that a fundamental choice I need to make is whether I should render on a <canvas> element or not. With a canvas, I have basic tools for rendering points, lines, and more complex things on top of that. Presumably there are, or will be, also various frameworks to help with this. Without a canvas, I could keep my objects in the DOM-tree, like a regular webpage, only quite complex, with many overlapping elements. Is one approach better than the other? Are they mutually exclusive? How do I know which to pick?

  I work as a iPhone app developer now, so I know a bit of c, c++ and objective c. Also have fiddled with Java and many other. All of them have been just high level application/games development. My final goal is to make a handheld game console. More like a home made NES/SNES handheld console or even an Atari. I have found out about RaspberryPI and Arduino.   Lately I tryed a few times to create characters for some games, but at some certain point (especially when collision detection came in) everything became messy and the interaction between chars, the world and certain items had a lot of bugs. So here is my question, how do you ussualy keep track of actions that your character is allowed to do, or more in general do you have some links / advices how to set up a char efficiantly? I´m working on a char right now, who should at least be able to run, jump, pick items up and use different fighting animations. Most ideas I came up with until now use some kind of action.priority / action.duration system to determain whats possible and what not, or a "action-manager" which defines for every action what is possible from that action on but it all doesnt work that well together.

• Gtk theme change doesn't apply to kde apps?

  I changed the systemwide ambiance theme a bit (specifically the scrollbar css), and this works fine in gtk apps, but in kde apps nothing has changed. They still have the vanilla ambiance look. I tried rebooting too. Btw I've disabled overlay scrollbars. I looked at this question: Why don't Qt4 apps in Lubuntu pick up the GTK theme? and tried setting the Gtk+ theme in qtconfig but that didn't help. The look remains the same. Changing the theme in qtconfig to another one, such as QtCurve, does have an effect though.

• After installing Ubuntu 12.10, Windows 8.1 disappears from start up menu

  I'm very new to Ubuntu (12.10), so I apologise if I'm not clear at any point! I had a Windows 8 (upgraded to Windows 8.1) and was fed up with it, so I converted to Ubuntu 12.10. I'd hoped to Dual Boot to at least get the benefit of both worlds. I created a partition for it in Windows and installed from a LiveUSB key (and installed into that parition). So now Ubuntu works great, but Windows 8.1 no longer shows up on the start up screen (where you theoretically pick which OS you want to boot in). I was going to try "Boot Repair" as mentioned here and restore MBR, but I don't want to start messing around with stuff I'm not entirely clear with. EDIT: For any of those who stumble here with the same problem, I just read here that a user wiped out his Windows partition by accident... I checked my own computer with sudo fdisk -l and there's only one Device Boot (dev/sda1). I'm not an expert, but I'm guessing that means Windows has been written over.

• How do I turn off all the password prompts?

  I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS since release and am trying to figure out a couple things about all of these passwords and key-ring prompts that I've just been living with for a while. Ever since install it seems that every time I boot up my computer and want to do anything (ie. use the internet, use a internet browser, install something, delete something, pick my nose) I'm always prompted for either a normal password entry or a key-ring password entry. Is there anyway to turn off all of this "security" and tell my Ubuntu that it can trust what I'm doing and go take a shower? Thank You in advance, barkerto

• Where can I find good (well organized) examples of game code?

  Where can I find good (well organized) examples of game code? I'm hoping that I can pick up some organizational tips. Most examples in books are too short and leave out lots of detail for the sake of brevity. I'm particularly interested on how to group your variables and methods so that another programmer would know where to look in the code. For example initializers at the top, then methods that take input, then methods that update views. I don't care about a particular language, as long as its OOP. I looked at the Quake 2 and 3 sources, but they're straight C and not much help for getting tips on organizing your objects. So, have you seen some good source? Any pointers to code that makes you say "wow, that's well organized" would be great.

I want to display the events in my UI and I'm stuck as to what's the best way to do this. I can think of a few scenarios to handle this but all of them seem sub-optimal: Listen for and handle Recorded Events in both the UI and in the RecordingMgr After receiving the event in the RecordingMgr, raise it again so that the UI can pick it up Create a variable in RecordingMgr (e.g., a BindingList) that the UI can bind to and update it when an Event is received Ditch the RecordingMgr and just put the event recording logic in the UI What's the best approach? Something above or something else?

• After install of kubuntu-full, no longer have access to Unity login

  I installed Ubuntu 13.10 about a week ago. Just today I went ahead and installed kubuntu-full to get KDE and it's associated programs. I want to keep the Unity login screen though (default when you install Ubuntu). I can't seem to get this working. Doing a 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm' or 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm' and choosing either one of those does not get me there. If I choose gdm, I just end up with a gnome login screen. If I pick lightdm, I end up with a KDE login screen. Doesn't seem to be an option for choosing the unity login screen (whatever it's called). Any assistance?
