  In most home routers, you can find a DHCP client table. Obviously the router knows the IP and MAC addresses of the connected computers. However, most of the time the router can list the computer names as well. So what protocol do they use to get the names? Perhaps NetBIOS?

  I'm looking for a new router to provide a VPN tunnel for my home network. My plan is to pass all internet traffic over a PPTP VPN provided by the router, which should ensure that the connection stays alive and only passes traffic over that protocol. I'm normally quite a fan of Draytek routers, and their 2710n does seem to feature VPN dial-out but it lacks Gigabit ports (though I can make do with that if the VPN support is good enough). Has anyone got any suggestions or personal experience in a similar setup? I'm happy to consider anything that supports dd-wrt (as I believe that supports VPN-out, though I may be wrong). Bonus points for models available in the UK.

• What's a good, affortable router that will not give me problems when downloading torrents?

  I found several routers on newegg and they're in the $50-60 range, but I'm not sure if they'll handle the number of connections that are created when downloading torrents (100-300 seeds and around 50 peers). My roommate watches netflix movies, my brother and I download torrents, so my NETGEAR router ends up choking on the traffic and I have to restart it quite frequently. I've already posted a couple of questions on the topic and I've come to the conclusion that I need a new router. What are some routers that I should consider (my budget is in the $50 range)?

  Here is what I have: 40" Sony Bravia LCD TV, 5+1 speaker system, lots of original Karaoke CDs, and of course, a microphone. To set up a karaoke entertainment system, what kind of hardware do I need? Are there any standalone karaoke players out there? I hope my only option is not having to connect my laptop to TV. I already have karaoke software on my laptop but I wanna step up to a higher level without the help of a computer.

  I wanted to set VIMHOME variable this way(common to windows and linux), let $VIMHOME=expand("%:p")."/..", so that VIMHOME is "~/.vim" in linux or "path/to/vimfiles" in windows. I put this in a var.vim file and placed this in the plugin directory. It loads properly, but VIMHOME is set only to "./..". How do I get the full path of a file using expand? Is there an easy way to set VIMHOME?

• All the Gear and No Idea: Suggestions for re-designing my home/office/entertainment network

  Help/ Advice/ Suggestions please: I have a load of kit that I love but which currently operate in disconnected, sometimes counter-productive way. Because I never really had a masterplan I just added these things one after another and connected them up in ad hoc ways. Since I bought my Macbook I've found I spend much less time on the MacPro that was until then my main machine. Perversely, as my job involves writing .Net software, I spend a lot of Mac time actually inside a Windows 7 VM. I stream media from the HP box to the PS3 and thus to the TV, but its not without its limitations/annoyances. We listen to each other's iTunes libraries but the music files are all over the place and it would be good to know they were all safely in one location (and fully backed up). I need to come up with a strategy that will allow me to use all the kit for work, play (recording live music, making tunes, iMovie work), pushing/streaming media to the TV and sharing files with my other half (she uses a Windows laptop and her iPod touch). Ideally I'd like to be able to work on any of the machines and have a shared homedrive that was visible to all machines so all my current files were synced up wherever i was. It would be great if I could access everything securely and quickly over the web. I'd also like to be able to set up a background backup process. The kit list thus far: Apple MacPro 8GB/3x250GB RAID0 + 1TB Apple MacBook Pro 13" 8GB/250GB - I spend a lot of my work time on a Windows 7 VM on this. Crappy Acer laptop (for children's use - iPlayer, watching movies/tv files) HP Proliant Server 4GB/80GB+160GB+300GB Sun Ultra 10 2 x 80GB (old, but in top-notch condition) PS3 160GB iPod Classic 2 x 8GB iPod Touch Observations: Part of the problem is our dual use of Windows and OS X - we can't go for a pure NT style roaming profile. Because the server is also used for hosting test/beta applications and a SQL Server db, it can't be dedicated to file serving. The two Macs really could do with sharing a roaming profile or similar. I'd love to be able to do something useful with the Ultra 10. My other half has been trying to throw it away for over five years now and regularly ask what function it serves in my study :-( I've got no shortage of 500GB external USB hard drives iMovie files are very large and ideally would be processed on a RAID system. Apple's TimeMachine isn't so great. If anyone could suggest all or part of a setup that would fulfil some of my requirements I'd be very grateful. I am willing to consider purchasing one or two more bits of kit (an Apple TV and a Squeezebox have been moted by friends) if they will help make efficiencies rather than add to the chaos and confusion.   Hi guys, We have an old Dell Inspiron laptop we don't use anymore and would look to turn it onto a media/backup server for music/pictures - and maybe documents/code. The laptop only has 40Gb of HD space but we can hook to it a USB external HD with an additional 80Gb. This is a very general question: - What OS should I put on it (more like, what flavor of Linux)? - What media/backup server software should I install on top of that? - How would you go about backing up to it? I need to back up computers on the same LAN, some have Windows, some OS X, some Linux. If you could point me to an all-in-one solution with a nice tutorial for non-sysadmin folks it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

• Windows 2008 as home file server and more

  I currently have a freenas-unit as a NAS, and a Win2k8R2-unit as server. However I would like to consolidate these to units in one. What I really like about the freenas-unit is the ZFS filesystem. And the only reason I care about the ZFS filesystem is the easy way I can grow an existing filesystem just by inserting a new drive. How would this work in Win2k8? If I setup my unit with a separate drive as C: and a 1TB drive as D:. The D: would then be segmented into d:\Videos d:\Music d:\Pictures. When everything gets close to filling the storage-drive, I would like to expand the storage, but I wouldn't want to have E:\Videos or d:\Videos2 (using the NTFS folder mount thingy). I still want all my Videos to reside in D:\Videos and I want the OS to decide which drive it's going to be stored on... Some kind of on-the-fly jbod expansion :) Is this at all possible in Windows 2008?

• How to get data from a borked Windows Home Server

  Yesterday we had a power surge, followed by a power outage. This left my WHS borked: powering on just gives to a flashing blue light (the led on the power supply also flashes green) - no fan or boot activity, nothing. I urgently needed some files off there in the short term (and the 500GB of photos, music, personal video etc in the long term) so I took the hard drive out and put it in my computer. The files and folders showed up, but I couldn't access them - clicking on an image gave an invalid image error in Picasa, I couldn't play MP3s etc. I changed the ownership and permissions of the files, still nothing. I booted in with a LiveCD, the same: files appear, but won't open. Is there anything else I can do? I'm now wondering if it was just the power cable that's broken, but if so, why can;t I access my files from the hard drive? If it is the power cable, and I replace that and the hard drive, will I have done any harm messing around with ownership and file permissions?

Specifically, I must be able to easily Forward ports to various clients on the LAN or the router itself (it's also a server) Manage a DHCP server preferably including DHCP reservation for certain MACs Give me a list of the connected DHCP clients (optionally) Show which clients are the most active as far as bandwidth (something like iftop) Alternatively, it could be a graphical app which I could tunnel over ssh. No command line programs please...I'm used to doing this stuff with a point-and-click interface. Not adverse to command-line setup; just need to be able to reconfigure things graphically. Have a working LAMP setup. I've tried webmin, but it didn't satisfy the "easy" part...too many clicks and too many meny options.

  I´m trying to update my D-link Dir-600 router with the dd-wrt firmware. I´ve searched for it at the site and found that: Revision A1, B1 and B2 are supported, while C isn´t. Now my router has this information on the back: P/N IIR600GNA .... C1G H/W Ver: C1 F/W Ver: 3.01 So I guess the H/W Ver is the revision, and it´s C... so it´s a lost cause? Or maybe because it´s not just C but C1 I could do something with it? Thanks!

  Do I need a Gigabit port capable wireless router with a 24MB/s down and 7MB/s upload speed cable modem? Does anyone know how to calculate this? FYI, I wont be using the wireless connection from my main computer system. My computer will connect via a hard wire into the router (of the wireless variety), which in turn is connected to the cable modem. My research suggests that the 100 MB/s port can easily handle it. • Can a consumer wireless router act as both a wireless client and access point?

  I'm going to be moving in the future, and integrating my home network into that of my landlord. I wish to maintain an isolated network while using his internet connection, so I'm planning on cascading my router off of his (WAN-to-LAN type configuration). Unfortunately, it looks like it might not be feasible to run a wire between the two. Therefore, I'd like to send my WAN connection over WiFi to his router. At my disposal, I have a WRT54GL (running Shibby's Tomato mod), and I just bought an Asus RT-N66U (I can be flexible with the firmware). My first thought was to set up the WRT as a wireless bridge, then run a wire between that and the N66U's WAN port. I'm reasonably sure I could make that work, but can I eliminate the WRT from the equation altogether? Can the N66U connect to the landlord's WiFi as a client, effectively using that as the WAN port, while simultaneously providing wireless access to my devices on an altogether different WLAN?

• Using a Token-ring network card instead of a router (?)

  I have cable, and the modem only has 1 network plug-in. They said I could buy my own router if I wanted to hook up two computers to it. I have an IBM Turbo 16/4 Token-Ring PC Card 2, which was in the laptop when I bought it, and the laptop also has the typical network plug (not a PC Card). Is there a way I could run the laptop as a server, and plug my desktop into the laptop, so they both have internet without my having to buy a router? (I realize routers are as cheap as $30.) Both computers run Windows XP Pro SP3. (I also have an 10/100 Etherjet Cardbus card (PC Card)). Thanks.

  The micro instance of Amazon EC2 only has ram of 613MB, my laptop got 8GB. And I suppose likewise the processing power of my computer would be better than the micro instance. My question is, what are the considerations in deciding to host yourself or on Amazon EC2, especially for a really baby startup? For example, would network speed be a problem? My computer broadband network is 100Mbs up to 1Gbs. What would Amazon compare to this? My site at these moment would just host some images and perform some php requests. I would probably also use cloudflare but seems it increases the dns lookup time considerably... And of course the overall objective is to make the best user experience.

I am finding that backups of my server are taking FOREVER (a week for 60gb) running backups renders my internet connection useless from any other box int he house. I have maxed out the pipe to my house from the ISP (10down, 3up), but is there a way for me to test and see if my router is bottlenecking anything? I feel like 60gb backups shouldn't take this long so any help would be great!

  How to do it again? I had simply forwarded needed ports (e.g. for counter strike, ftp, http etc)) but now with same system, same OS and same router and settings, it's not working. Tried setting router to "factory defaults" and do everything again. However other jobs are being done like it is connecting to my DSL ISP and I can access Internet easily. Still no success. PS. I tried on both Windows and Ubuntu. On Windows I use it for Counter Strike and others (e.g. host my local FTP server) on Ubuntu.

• VPN Device behind router/firewall

  ROUTER A: Peplink 310 serving as the gateway/router/firewall at one location. ROUTER B: Linksys RV082 serving as the gateway/router/firewall at another location. I want to VPN these two locations together. The Peplink has a PPTP server and has proprietary site-to-site vpn if you had another peplink device. The Linksys has an IPsec vpn server. VPN A: I also have another spare linksys rv082. I'm trying to setup the other rv082 (VPN A) behind the peplink (ROUTER A) and get VPN A to talk to ROUTER B. I setup VPN A with a lan ip address and plugged one of it's LAN ports into the LAN. I was able to get to it's web interface fine. On ROUTER A I one-to-one nat mapped one of our public ip's to the LAN IP for VPN A. I opened TCP 50-51 and UDP 500 to VPN A. I configured the VPN settings on VPN A to connect to ROUTER B. I did the opposite for ROUTER B. But the vpn doesn't connect. Then I tried pluging VPN A's wan port into the lan, and gave it another LAN IP. I thought perpahs VPN A didn't want to send VPN traffic out over the LAN and wanted do send it over it's WAN. The vpn still doesn't connect. It what I'm trying to do even possible?
