• Spring 2012 Provides Plenty of Events for Developers

  Hi Webmasters I have received several email asking me to renew a domain name: REMINDER: Renew early for multiple years and lock in your savings! For your review, listed below are domain names and their expiration dates. F.....COM - Mar. 09, 2011 Since I lost the domain name long time ago and couldn't get it back I asked if it was available again. Goddady replyed: According to WHOIS the domain name is registered to a Japanese company with the expiry date: 2011-12-02. I wrote to Godaddy: According to your information the domain holder is a Japanese company as described below. Can you give me an explanation why you send me an email asking me to pay for a domain name which I do not own? (Expiration Date: 2011-12-02) I am just curious, I am sure there is no ill will on your part. Godaddy answered: Dear Sir or Madam, Thank you for contacting online support. This was just to let you know the domain is registered to someone else and who. Then today I got yet another invoice asking me to renew the same domain name once again: **REMINDER: Renew early for multiple years and lock in your savings! The product(s) listed below have expired or are at risk of expiring: Product NameNext Attempt Date.COM Domain Name Renewal - 1 Year (recurring)03/14/2011 F........COM You are at risk of losing the service(s) or product(s) listed above. • Proper Data Structure for Commentable Comments

  Been struggling with this on an architectural level. I have an object which can be commented on, let's call it a Post. Every post has a unique ID. Now I want to comment on that Post, and I can use ID as a foreign key, and each PostComment has an ItemID field which correlates to the Post. Since each Post has a unique ID, it is very easy to assign "Top Level" comments. When I comment on a comment however, I feel like I now need a PostCommentComment, which attaches to the ID of the PostComment. Since ID's are assigned sequentially, I can no longer simply use ItemID to differentiate where in the tree the comment is assigned. I.E. both a Post and a Post Comment might have an ID of '5', so my foreign key relationship is invalid. This seems like it could go on infinitely, with PostCommentCommentComment's etc... What's the best way to solve this? Should I have a field in the comment called "IsPostComment" or something of the like to know which collection to attach the ID to? This strikes me as the best solution I've seen so far, but now I feel like I need to make recursive DataBase calls which start to get expensive. Meaning, I get a Post and get all PostComments where ItemID == Post.ID && where IsPostComment == true Then I take that as a collection, gather all the ID's of the PostComments, and do another search where ItemID == PostComment[all].ID && where IsPostComment == false, then repeat infinitely. This means I make a call for every layer, and if I'm calling 100 Posts, I might make 1000 DB calls to get 10 layers of comments each. What is the right way to do this?

• Slowdown after repeated hibernation in XP SP3

  I have a Dell laptop w/dual core and 4 gigs of memory. Recently my machine has started to go off in never never land for 5 to 20 minutes at a time with a lot of hard drive churning. Eventually it comes back and everything operates properly. If I manage to have task manager up CPU usage shows no more then 3 to 5% during this process. I am on a corporate network and have very good virus protection in place. The problem seems to have increased in frequency since I let an update happen to IE8 and/or I started using hibernate more frequently. Any ideas or suggestions? TIA J

• XNA Guide text input - maximum length

  so I am using Guide.BeginShowKeyboardInput to get the user to enter their username. I would like this to be limited to 20 characters, and it seems to break expected behaviour to let them input whatever they like and trim it later - so how would I go about limiting what they can input in the text box itself? • Load different levels in XML

  my question is more about a theoretical gener than a pratical way to make things happen. I'm about start developing a game for android, text based so i won't need sprites or animation, nor a game engine. Let's say is similar to a sudoku game, where each level is an harder version of sudoku and each level has some question to be asnwered over the sudoku itself. I was wondering if the better way is to have only one XML and then inside all the different levels, each one with his meta-tags, or if the different approach of making n xml files where each one is a level is preferred. At the moment a level should have those tags: <level> <question>Question_1</question> <hint1>what does it do?</hint1> <hint2>where...</hint2> .... <hintN>how...</hintN> </level> So each level could have some items to read and that's what made me think that maybe different files are better cuz if i have to load lvl 10 i can read only the 10.xml file. I hope my question isn't too stupind. Thanks in advance

• A better way to encourage contributions to OSS

  Currently in the .NET world, most OSS projects are available via a NuGet package. Users have a very easy path towards *using* the project right away. But let’s say they encounter some isssue (maybe a bug, maybe a potential improvement) with the library. At this point, going from user to contributor (of a fix, or a good bug repro or even a spike for a new feature) is a very steep and non trivial multi-step process of registering with some open source hosting site (codeplex, github, bitbucket, etc.), learning how to grab the latest sources, build the project, formulate a patch (or fork the code), learn the source control software they use (mercurial, git, svn, tfs), install whatever tools are needed for it, read about the contributors workflow for the project (do you fork &amp; send pull requests? do you just send a patch file? do you just send a snippet? a unit test? etc.), and on, and on, and on. Granted, you may be lucky and already know the source control system the project uses, but in really, I’d say the chances are pretty low. I believe most developers *using* OSS are far from familiar with them, much less with contributing back to various projects. We OSS devs like to be on the cutting edge all the time, ya’ know, always jumping on the new SCC system, the new hosting site, the new agile way of managing work items, bug tracking, code reviews, etc. etc. etc.. • $PATH in Vim doesn't match Terminal

  I'm using MacVim and when I don't launch it from the Terminal (mvim) its $PATH does not include what I have set in my .bash_profile. It only seems to have the default values, /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin. I'm running OS X 10.5.8. Even if I could set it manually in my .vimrc that would be okay, though I would prefer it to pull from the same place as Terminal. I've tried following what one site suggested, adding let $PATH += /blah/foo:/bar/etc to no avail. Edit/Solution: See my answer below. MacVim has an option to fix this.

• Need assistance setting up Linux Router with 2 public lans

  I was assigned a.b.c.10/30 (Public IP) for my router and given a.b.c.9 as the gateway. I was also assigned x.y.z.128/25 (Public IP block) for my use. I want to setup a Linux router to handle this situation. My Linux box has 3 NICs, eth0 is a.b.c.10, eth1 I have assigned x.y.z.254, eth2 is unused at present. I have eth1 connected to a network switch, and several devices connected. Let's say box A is x.y.z.129 with a gateway of x.y.z.254. I have not connected to the network yet, as it is not live. What settings do I need to make, beyond adding the 2 network definitions to the cards and having "route add default gw a.b.c.9 eth0"? I may add a private 192.168.100.0/24 lan to eth2 later.

• dell u2410 3dMark Benchmark distortion problems

  Ive been doing burn in testing for a new system I have put together and I am running into some video distortion problems with running the 3DMark benchmark tools (Both 06 and Vantage). The graphics will be fine, then sometimes during a test switch the screen will light up with thin horizontal ranibow lines (Something that looks very "glitchy") If i turn the monitor off and back on it clears up. All the tests "pass" and my system gets good marks but it concerns me if I might have problems with games (The screen returns to normal if I dont resest monitor and just let tests pass). I want to return a problem component now before its too late if it is something with the new hardware. Also, I am monitoring temp with thermal laser gun and the card itself is not going above 65c. Any ideas? System: Asrock x58 Xtreme - Last BIOS (1.80) EVGA Geforce GTX 285 w/ latest nvidia drivers (Connect via DVI1) Dell U2410(Set to 59hz refresh 1900x1202 -although I believe benchmarks run 1200x1024) Windows 7 Ultimate 64 12Gb DDR3 1600 RAM

• Strategy for restoring state via URL in web apps

  This is a question about modern web apps, where a single page is loaded, and all subsequent navigation is done by XHR calls and modifying the DOM. We can use libraries that manipulate the hash string, which let us navigate by URL and support the back/forward buttons. But to use those libraries, we need to be able to move the UI from any one state to any other. Is there a good strategy for moving between UI states, that also allows them to be restored from scratch when you load a new URL? In a complex app, you might have a lot of different states. You don't want to reload the entire UI each time you change states. But you also don't want to require separate methods for moving from every state to each every state. Typically we need to: Restore a state from scratch, when you enter a new URL or hit Reload. Move from one state to another, when you use the Back/Forward buttons. Move from one state to another, when you perform an action within your app (like clicking a link). Move to certain states that shouldn't be added to the history, like ones that appear after form submissions. Move to some states that are built on the previous state, like a drill-down list. When you perform actions within your app, there's the additional question of which comes first: Do you change the URL, listen for the URL change, and change your state in response to it? Or do you change your state, then change the URL, but don't do anything in response? Does anyone have some experience to share on this topic?

• Installing 10.10+ with Radeon HD 6970 Video Card

  I built a new PC that has a Diamond Radeon HD 6970 graphics card, and no on-board graphics. When I boot from the Ubuntu disc, it runs through some initial booting stuff, and then gets to a loading screen that just has the Ubuntu logo and some progress bar/dot thingies. After this screen is finished, it goes black and says it cannot display video mode. I've seen many people that say to simply install the ati drivers. However, I don't believe this is an option, because I can't even get to the boot screen that asks me if I want to run the system off of the LiveCD, boot to hard disk, etc... Is there a way to somehow boot to a CLI before getting to the screen that would normally let me choose that? I'm at a loss as far as what to do. Also: Yes, the CD boots fine on other machines. (I've also burnt a couple discs just to be sure) Yes, the graphics card is fine. I normally dual-boot with Windows 7, and it runs on Windows just fine. Thanks for any help!

• How best to backup 6x Win2k3 Servers

  We have a external HP LTO3 tape drive. It needs to backup 6 Windows 2003 machines every night. Servers are HP DL380 G3 and the tape drive is attached locally to one of them via SCSI. On a budget of $0, and a goal of keeping-it-simple, what is going to be the best way to backup these machines? What software to use? NT Backup? Or does HP have something better for free? We don't need image backups - file system + system state will be adequate. Do we need to copy the files to be backed up onto the machine with the tape drive attached? Edit: Let me ask a more focussed question: Would you use NT Backup or something else? No soap boxing please, we've after some quick advice from someone who's used a similar setup.

• How to detect a change in a background window

  Hi, Let's say I have a chat window open in a web browser, and I'm waiting for a message from my partner, trying to do something else in the meantime. The chat window (not an installed program) will not alert me of an incoming message, nor will the task bar flash or anything. Is there any utility that can help me? In search of a solution, I came across AutoHotKey. There is a script called livewindows.ahk, which will show a piece of the window anywhere on the screen, but it won't alert me on a change. I'm not skilled enough to know how to store and compare e.g. every second's content of some window area. Maybe someone has invented this wheel? Thanks in advance for any hint or advice. Leonardo

• What GUI tools are available for which DVCS?

  When I worked at Sun, we used a DVC system called Forte SCCS/Teamware, which used the old SCCS file format, but was a true distributed source code revision control system. One nice feature is that it had strong GUI support: You could bringover and putback changes by simply clicking and dragging. It would draw trees/graphs showing how workspaces relate to each other. You also could have a graph view to display a single file's complete history, which might have had several branches and merges. Allowing you to compare any two points. It also had a strong visual merge tool, to let you accept changes from one of two conflicting files. Naturally, many of the current DVCSs have command line support for these operations, but I'm looking for GUI support in order to use this in a lower-level undergraduate course I'll be teaching. I'm not saying the Forte Teamware solution was perfect, but it did seem to be ahead of the curve. Unfortunately, it's not a viable option to use for my class. Question: What support do the current DVCSs have with regards to GUIs? Do any of them work on Windows, and not just Linux? Are they "ready for prime-time" or still works in progress? Are these standalone or built as plug-ins, e.g., for Eclipse? Note: To help keep this discussion focused I'm only interested in GUI tools. And not a meta-discussion if GUI tools should be used in teaching.

  Before asking question let me tell you some assumptions here there are 5 files on my webserver index.php config.php read.php write.php .htaccess I've wrote following URL rewriting rule in .htaccess RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^(\w+)$ read.php?id=$1 Now when I type domain.com/xyz it fetch data from read.php?id=xyz thats nice :) But when I type domain.com/index it fetch data from index.php or when i type domain.com/write or domain.com/config or domain.com/read it fetch data from write.php , config.php and read.php respectively I want data to be fectched from read.php?id=index or read.php?id=config or read.php?id=read or read.php?id=write Any one can help me regarding this ? • Turn off Windows Defender on your builds

  I've spent some time this evening profiling a Python application on Windows, trying to find out why it was so much slower than on Mac or Linux. The application is an in-house build tool which reads a number of config files, then writes some output files. Using the RunSnakeRun Python profile viewer on Windows, two things immediately leapt out at me: we were running os.stat a lot and file.close was really expensive. A quick test convinced me that we were stat-ing the same files over and over. It was a combination of explicit checks and implicit code, like os.walk calling os.path.isdir. I wrote a little cache that memoizes the results, which brought the cost of the os.stats down from 1.5 seconds to 0.6. Figuring out why closing files was so expensive was harder. I was writing 77 files, totaling just over 1MB, and it was taking 3.5 seconds. It turned out that it wasn't the UTF-8 codec or newline translation. It was simply that closing those files took far longer than it should have. I decided to try a different profiler, hoping to learn more. I downloaded the Windows Performance Toolkit. I recorded a couple of traces of my application running, then I looked at them in the Windows Performance Analyzer, whereupon I saw that in each case, the CPU spike of my app was followed by a CPU spike in MsMpEng.exe. What's MsMpEng.exe? It's Microsoft's antimalware engine, at the heart of Windows Defender. I added my build tree to the list of excluded locations, and my runtime halved. The 3.5 seconds of file closing dropped to 60 milliseconds, a 98% reduction. The moral of this story is: don't let your virus checker run on your builds.

• How to manually set color of Unity Panel?

  I was just wondering if there's a way to set the color of the Unity panel manually, as opposed to having it derived from smooshing all the colors of the wallpaper together. (the launcher on the left side of the screen that comes default in Ubuntu is the Unity Panel, right? If not, please correct me on my terminology.) The reason I want this is because I have this cool wallpaper I found on DeviantArt, and I used GIMP to make Dawn, Dusk, and Midnight versions of it. Then, I set them with a transition effect, so that the lighting changes over the course of the day. Unfortunately, the Unity Panel turns a sickly sewer green at night (it could also be said to look like radioactive barf.) Either way, I don't like my launcher thingy looking like that. I'd prefer to stay away from programs that let you customise the Unity Panel (I'm fine with using sudo nano to edit system config files,) but I would if it were the only option. • How do I load tmx files with Slick2d?

  I just started using Slick2D and learned how simple it is to load in a tilemap and display it. I tried atleast a dozen different tmx files from numerous examples to see if it was the actual file that was corrupted.   A Developer Preview of Java SE 8 including JavaFX (JDK 8) on Linux for ARM processors is now available for immediate download from Java.net. As Java Evangelist Stephen Chin says, "This is a great platform for doing small embedded projects, a low cost computing system for teaching, and great fun for hobbyists." This Developer Preview is provided to the community so that you can provide us with valuable feedback on the ongoing progress of the project. • ASP.Net MVC: Areas and controllers

  Areas are a great feature of MVC now. The let you put common code into an Area and then its segregated from other code. That makes it really easy to put those common feature in one spot and not have the interfere with other code. So today I was working on a new area and starting to test code in it. But the controller method could not be found. Testing the routes and all of the names proved no help either. So I am banging my head against the wall. Then I took a peak at one of the existing controllers in another Area in the same app. Looked similar, but … There was a Namespaceat the top of that controller with that Area in the Namespace.  I had copied my controller in from somewhere else and therefore it did not have the Namespace there.   I put in the right Namespace and cool, it worked right away. So add that to your list when testing.
