• Flash / actionscript 3 sound delay.

  Hey. Im working on a flash project where I am loading multiple sounds from external files. The problem is that when I play them within my project there is a small delay from when they should be played until they are actually playing. My sounds are very short and are loaded before the project is actually using them. I have looked up the problem online and it looks like the problem is not something that is only happening for me. But, non of the resources I found had any clear ways of fixing this. Some resources say that you can fix this my constantly having a sound playing in the background. I have that but it does not help. I have also looked at the actual sound file in a sound tool and there is a small delay before the sound starts, but it is very very small and should not result in the delay im seeing in my flash project. Does anyone know of a good way to fix it?

• Problem restoring a SQL Server backup

  I have a SQL Server 2008, which is part of a domain. Now I make a backup of a database of this server and restore it on a SQL Server, which is not part of a domain. I have an C# application, which uses this database. On the NON-Domain machine I get now exceptions like this: "Cannot execute as the database prinzipal because the principial "dbo" does not exist, this type of principal cannot be impersonatedm or you don not have the permission" I think, the problem is, that the database owner is a domain user and this user doesn't exist on the target machine (backup machine)!? How can I solve this ?

• Silverlight TabItem template not working correctly

  Hello everybody! In a SL4 application i need to restyle my TabItems (actually add a button in the header). So i took the TabItem's control template from here and added the functionality i wanted. This seems to work fine, (i could dynamically add tabitems) with one exception: i think this posted control template is behaving somehow "arbitrary": every time the mouse hoovers over a non selected TabItem header, this gets selected WHITHOUT clicking!! (afaik this is not the default behavior: the user user has to click a header to make this tabitem the selected one). I tried to find why it is behaving like this, with no luck! Is there someone who can enlighten my darkness??? Thanks in advance!

• What causes a JRE 6 JVM code cache leak?

  Since switching to JRE 6, my server's code cache usage (non-heap) keeps growing indefinitely. My application creates a lot of classes at runtime, BUT these classes are successfully unloaded during the GC process. I can see these classes getting unloaded in the gc logs and also the permGen usage stays constant. I specifically make sure in my code that these classes are orphaned once I am finished with them and so they correctly get garbage collected from permGen. The code cache however keeps growing. I only became aware of the code cache after switching to JRE 6. So I guess my questions are: Does GC include the code cache? What could cause a code cache memory leak, specifically. Is there a bug in JDK 6 in this area?

  i'm trying to take advantage of html 5 web sockets in .NET and the easiest way appears to do something like this guy does: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/webservices/c_sharp_web_socket_server.aspx?msg=3485900#xx3485900xx i've already tested this myself and it works great, but there are a few problems if i try to deploy this to my hosting site (discountasp.net). basically i am not allowed to open up a port on 8080 and listen on it. i then tried to figure out a way to listen non port 80 with IIS as well, but using the HTTPListener runs into sercurity issues as well that doesn't seem like will help since i can't mess with this stuff on the hosting site server either: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/169904/can-i-listen-on-a-port-using-httplistener-or-other-net-code-on-vista-without-r so to make my life easier, i think i need to find a hosting site that simply allows me to open up a socket on port 8080 and listen on it. anyone know of one? or anyone know of a workaround (besides sniffing ALL the traffic on port 80)?

• Skype Raw API (NOT COM API) send message problem

  In converting this CONSOLE example to a full windows dialog implementation I have run into a very "simple problem". The handle I use is the wParam value from the Skype Reply message, as in the code. This is non zero, but I am not sure if there is a way to test it other than with SendMessage. The compiled app from this C++ code example (see zip download) does actually work so I am stumped. I do encode the message with UTF8, and I create an instance of the COPYDATASTRUCT in my app, populate it then call SendMessage() with the COPYDATASTRUCT pointer in lparam. Skype does not respond nor does it obey. Am I missing something obvious here?

• TFSBuild.Proj and Manual SQL Server Work Help?

  Using the VS 2008 GDR update, I have created a database project. I have created a SQL Server deployment package. I have created a database unit test. Using some wizards, the stuff got into my tfsbuild.proj file so near the end of the automated build process a database is created. I lack a little control of the whole process, I now see. What I would like to do is manually deploy the DB, run 3 custom scripts against the DB, and then manually start the DB unit test. I have other non-DB unit tests that already run. I do not want to use VSMDI or ordered unit test stuff because in out multi-developer environment it gets messy. Help!

  Hello All, I am very new to ASP.NET MVC and currently, I am involved in developing a new application in ASP.NET MVC 2. I am having problem in managing a long querystring parameters that comes from dBase. For example, in any non-mvc app the following URL works well: http ://example.com/test.aspx?first_name=fname&last_name=lname&email_id=email&address1=add1&address2=add2&city=city&state=state&zip_code=zip and so on. The QueryString parameter can be determined on the fly (i.e. at run-time). Now for dynamic QueryString how routing will be done? Also for a simple URL, the URL will be as follows (in ASP.NET MVC): http ://example.com/test/id/category But for above mentioned dynamic & long QueryString how the URL will look like? • Asp.Net MVC does automatic model validation for DateTime but no others

  I'm using MVC 2 with some Models from a LinqToSql project that I built. I see that when I post back to a Controller Action after editing a form that has a DateTime field from the Model, the MVC Html.ValidationMessageFor() helper will nicely display an error beside the Date text box. This seems to happen automatically when the you test ModelState.IsValid() in the Controller Action, as if the MVC model binding automatically knows that the DateTime field cannot be empty. My question is... I have some other string fields in these LinqToSql generated classes that are Not-Nullable (marked as Not Nullable in Sql Server which passes thourgh to the LinqToSql generated classes), so why doesn't Mr. MVC pick up on those as well and display a "Required" message in the ValidationMessageFor() placeholders I have added for those fields? Sure, I have successfully added the MetadataType(typeof) buddy classes to cover these Non-nullable string fields, but it sure does seem redundant to add all this metadata in buddy classes when the LinqToSql generated classes already contain enough info that MVC could sniff out. It MVC validation works with DateTime automatically, why not these Not-nullable fields too?

• Lua - Iterate Through Table With nil Values

  My lua function receives a table that is of the array form: { field1, field2, nil, field3, } No keys, only values. I'm trying to convert this to a pseudo CSV form by grabbing all the fields and concatenating them into a string. Here is my function: function ArenaRewind:ConvertToCSV(tableName) csvRecord = "\n" for i,v in pairs(tableName) do if v == nil then v = "nil" end csvRecord = csvRecord .. "\"" .. v .. "\"" if i ~= #tableName then csvRecord = csvRecord .. "," end end return csvRecord end Not the prettiest code by any means, but it seems to iterate through them and grab all the non-nil values. The other table iteration function is ipairs() which stops as soon as it hits a nil value. Is there any easy way to grab all of these fields including the nil values? The tables are various sizes, so I hope to refrain from accessing each part like an array [i.e., tableName[1] through tableName[4]) and just grabbing the nil values that way. Thanks in advance.

  I connect to my database with one session. I have always the same session in my hole program. My Thread "1" catches primary data from the database. The user must be allowed to cancel this thread. So if the user presses the cancel button to often or to fast (this is my interpretation) the following error occures: ERROR org.hibernate.AssertionFailure - HHH000099: an assertion failure occured (this may indicate a bug in Hibernate, but is more likely due to unsafe use of the session) org.hibernate.AssertionFailure: possible non-threadsafe access to the session The same errors occures if i cancel my thread "2" which is running in the background after my thread "1" ist finished and the try to load another primary data set from the database. Is the failure that i am using the same session in my two threads? What is the right way to solve such a problem?

• iPhone: How to detect if an EKEvent instance can be modified?

  While working with the EventKit on iPhone I noticed that some events can exist which cannot be modified. Examples I encountered so far are birthdays and events synced with CalDAV. When you view the event's details in the standard built-in calendar app on iPhone the "Edit" button in the top-right corner is not visible in these cases, where it would be visible when viewing "normal" events. I've searched everywhere, read all documentation there is but I simply can't find anything that tells me how to detect this behavior! I can only detect it afterwards: edit an event's title save it to the event store check the event's title, if it has not changed it is not editable! I am looking for a way that I can detect the non-editable behavior of an event beforehand. I know this is possible because I've seen other calendar apps implement this correctly.

  Hi, I'm trying to comprehend ontology basics. Here's an example: car (class) 2009 VW CC (sub-class or instance?) My neighbor's 2009 VW CC (instance) My issue is understanding what is "2009 VW CC" (as a car model). If you're making product model a sub-class in the ontology - all of a sudden your ontology becomes bloated with thousands of subclasses of a "car". That's redundant. At the same time we can't say "2009 VW CC" is an instance, at least it's not material instance of a class. Does it make sense to distinguish between regular instances and material (distinct physical objects)? At the other hand, if both are instances (of different nature so to say), then how can instance inherit properties / relations of a non-class?

• EMail Signing (Outlook) Using Smartcard Minidriver [Windows]

  Hi I'm developing a Smart card Minidriver and I'm trying to Sign an Email using Outlook 2007. I have implemented all of the necessary functions in the minidriver. I'm able to create a "Smartcard User" certificate and save it and it's private key on the smartcard (using Microsoft Certificate Services via the Minidriver). When I try to sign an EMail via Outlook I'm getting Error Message (Internal Error), the last call to the minidriver is for ReadFile with "cmapfile" When I try to sign an EMail via Outlook with a difference non-smartcard certificate it's work fine. When I try to sign a Data using CryptoAPI (based on Windows SDK Sample) it's working fine. I'm using Windows 7. someone got any idea how to debug this issue? I tried to enable the CAPI2 eventlog, it don't give me any good information.

But I'm trying to figure out a good way to get the functionality working with browsers with javascript disabled (like mobile browsers). Is there a way to define a whole different view for non javascript browsers? A specific example of what I'm trying to do is, I have a with it's onClick calling a javascript that does $.post() to a controller. What's a good way to make it, so, it works the way it works right now (doing ajax calls) with regular javascript-enabled browsers and it a also works with javascript-incapable browsers, doing a full postback ?   I'm trying to create a ggplot2 plot with the legend beneath the plot. The ggplot2 book says on p 112 "The position and justification of legends are controlled by the theme setting legend.position, and the value can be right, left, top, bottom, none (no legend), or a numeric position".   I am just staring to play around with Objective C (writing toy iPhone apps) and I am curious about the underlying mechanism used to dispatch messages. I have a good understanding of how virtual functions in C++ are generally implemented and what the costs are relative to a static or non-virtual method call, but I don't have any background with Obj-C to know how messages are sent. Browsing around I found this loose benchmark and it mentions IMP cached messages being faster than virtual function calls, which are in turn faster than a standard message send. I am not trying to optimize anything, just get deeper understanding of how exactly the messages get dispatched. How are Obj-C messages dispatched? How do Instance Method Pointers get cached and can you (in general) tell by reading the code if a message will get cached? Are class methods essentially the same as a C function (or static class method in C++), or is there something more to them? I know some of these questions may be 'implementation dependent' but there is only one implementation that really counts.

• How to HIDE the iPad keyboard from a MODAL view controller?

  I'm trying to hide the iPad keyboard from a modal view controller but it doesn't work. I have tried resignFirstResponder but that doesn't have any affect if we are in a modal view controller. I tried resignFirstResponder in a non-modal UINavigationController with the very same UIViewController and the keyboard hides correctly. Does anyone know how solve this problem? Thanks. [Update] it looks like there's something wrong with my code because the resignFirstResponder does work (I made a simple test case instead of using my code). But I still don't know what the problem is.

• Is post-sudden-power-loss filesystem corruption on an SSD drive's ext3 partition "expected behavior"?

  My company makes an embedded Debian Linux device that boots from an ext3 partition on an internal SSD drive. Because the device is an embedded "black box", it is usually shut down the rude way, by simply cutting power to the device via an external switch. This is normally okay, as ext3's journalling keeps things in order, so other than the occasional loss of part of a log file, things keep chugging along fine. However, we've recently seen a number of units where after a number of hard-power-cycles the ext3 partition starts to develop structural issues -- in particular, we run e2fsck on the ext3 partition and it finds a number of issues like those shown in the output listing at the bottom of this Question. Running e2fsck until it stops reporting errors (or reformatting the partition) clears the issues. My question is... what are the implications of seeing problems like this on an ext3/SSD system that has been subjected to lots of sudden/unexpected shutdowns? My feeling is that this might be a sign of a software or hardware problem in our system, since my understanding is that (barring a bug or hardware problem) ext3's journalling feature is supposed to prevent these sorts of filesystem-integrity errors. (Note: I understand that user-data is not journalled and so munged/missing/truncated user-files can happen; I'm specifically talking here about filesystem-metadata errors like those shown below) My co-worker, on the other hand, says that this is known/expected behavior because SSD controllers sometimes re-order write commands and that can cause the ext3 journal to get confused. In particular, he believes that even given normally functioning hardware and bug-free software, the ext3 journal only makes filesystem corruption less likely, not impossible, so we should not be surprised to see problems like this from time to time. Which of us is right? • ASP.NET MVC 2 RC2 Model Binding with NVARCHAR NOT NULL column

  I have a database column defined as NVARCHAR(1000) NOT NULL DEFAULT(N'') - in other words, a non-nullable text column with a default value of blank. I have a model class generated by the Linq-to-SQL Classes designer, which correctly identifies the property as not nullable. I have a TextAreaFor in my view for that property. I'm using UpdateModel in my controller to fetch the value from the form and populate the model object. If I view the web page and leave the text area blank, UpdateModel insists on setting the property to NULL instead of empty string. (Even if I set the value to blank in code prior to calling UpdateModel, it still overwrites that with NULL). Which, of course, causes the subsequent database update to fail. I could check all such properties for NULL after calling UpdateModel, but that seems ridiculous - surely there must be a better way? Please don't tell me I need a custom model binder for such a simple scenario...!

  I'm trying to make a generic class that takes 3 types, either a simple string, IList or a IList. public class OntologyStore { } public sealed class jim<T> where T:new() { IList<string> X = null; IList<OntologyStore> X1 = null; public bob() { if (typeof(T) == typeof(String)) { X = new List<string>(); } if (typeof(T) == typeof(OntologyStore)) { X1 = new List<OntologyStore>(); } } } I can easily create, which you would expect to work, jim<OntologyStore> x1=new jim<jim<OntologyStore>() as you would expect, but when I put in jim<string> x2=new jim<string>() the compiler reports the string is non abtract type, which you would expect. Is it possible to create a generic class, which can instantiate as a class which holds string, or a IList or an IList?

• On MacOSX, in a C++ program, what guarantees can I have on file IO

  I am on MacOSX. I am writing a multi threaded program. One thread does logging. The non-logging threads may crash at any time. What conventions should I adopt in the logger / what guarantees can I have? I would prefer a solution where even if I crash during part of a write, previous writes still go to disk, and when reading back the log, I can figure out "ah, I wrote 100 complete enties, then I crashed on the 101th".
