• c# creating a file from input stream

  My component will recieve a pdf file as a filestream from which I will need to create a file. For testing purposes I am trying to read a file using the filestream object and recreate it at a different location. But the recreated file is created blank. the recreated file has the same number of pages though... This is the code StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(_filePath); str = sr.ReadToEnd(); File.WriteAllText(@"C:\recreated.pdf", str); what am I doing wrong? Thanks for your time.

• Arguments to convince to switch from CVS to SVN

  Hi, The UNIX department of my company currently uses CVS as source-version control system. They use it in a very strange way: different repositories for development/testing/production code (for the same project), no one tags anything, weird directory architecture, and so on. The system has been set for ages but now, I have an opportunity to organize a meeting where I have to suggest changes. I'd like to make them change from CVS to SVN (Mercurial or Git might be even better, however I can't really recommand using a system I don't know well, and switching to SVN will already be a great step forward). I don't have much experience with CVS so I can't compare them efficiently: I just know it doesn't support atomic operations and that it is deprecated. What killer arguments would you use to convince my collegues to do the switch ? Thank you very much.

• Creating an n tiered application

  I am researching architecture for a project that will be started next year. It is mainly a c# web app, but there will be a service layer so that it can talk to our facebook/iphone app. There are a few long running processes, which means that I will be creating a windows process that can handle those. I’m thinking of putting the entire app in the windows service instead of just the long running processes. Asp - wcf - bll Vs Asp - bll I know this will be more scalable. But it is probably overkill as everything will be running on the same box, even the database. This could change down the road if the server can’t handle the traffic like marketing says it will. I don’t have access to production hardware, just my crappy testing box and my local machine. Has anyone decided to go down this route? But mostly, what is the best way to test both methods to get some metrics?

• Converting VS 2008 Project to VS 2010 - now .aspx won't load

  I converted all my other projects fine from VS 2008 to 2010 and they run great. There is one project however for some reason after converting, when I try to run one of the .aspx pages in it, I get nothing...no error, just that it cannot display the page. Nothing has changed. The path is still the same, and the IIS website is still the same. I even recreated the site in IIS using the VS option to create it in the web project properties. This is a testing project..only has like one .aspx in it. Not sure why I get nothing after converting this. I did not convert it to .NET 4.0, it's still in v3.5 in VS 2010.

• Developing web app, question for mobile developers

  I'm going to develop a web app that I expect some people will also end up wanting to view on their phones. The UI will be fairly straightforward (no frames, just CSS/HTML). May have a bit of Flash, but not for the first version. My question is, for testing viewing of the web app on mobile devices what devices would you recommend that I test on (and thus, most likely, have to purchase)? Windows Mobile iPhone Android Other? or can I use emulators for any/all of these? Note that I'm not developing a platform (android, iPhone) specific app, just a web application that I expect will also be accessed from a mobile phone. I apologise if this seems like a niave/stupid question, but this hobby project is totally away from my commercial experience and I just don't know the answers to these questions, hence asking here.   Hi, I'd like to run a unit test where a constant is slightly different than in the standard version. That is, in my default module, the following is bindConstant().annotatedWith(Names.named("number of players")).to(4); but in testing, I'd like to try this line instead: bindConstant().annotatedWith(Names.named("number of players")).to(2); Id like to achieve that without copying all of the rest of the module. What I really want is a "default" module that is "below" a more specialized module, such that in case of conflict, the specialized module wins (instead of throwing an exception, which is what guice does). In essence, my question is: how does anybody arrange for more than one module without lots of code duplication?

• Can I use meteor for this?

  I'm looking for a way to create an app which has a realtime web interface as well as an API which can be called by a node.js client while sharing most of its code. I'd like to be able to manage data, monitor and execute tasks inside of my app via browser, but also have an automation/scheduling program which connects to my web app and tells it to run various tasks and get results of each task. Unfortunately it doesn't look like I can connect to Meteor from the server, so I'm wondering if there's another approach? Is what I described even possible using Meteor? I have done some testing using socket.io and I think I may be able to do it this way, but Meteor seems like it'd be really great for the realtime user interface.

• Differing form size between XP and 7

  I am developing a C# WinForms app on my XP dev machine with Visual C# Express 2008. I set the form to have a size of my liking with Width and Height on the designer and all looks good. I also set these dimensions to the MaximumSize property. Deploying the app to another XP machine, and the app looks like it does on my dev. However, in testing the app on a Win7 machine, the form has both horizontal and vertical scrollbars applied. I assume that this is due to the changed non-client size of the form, as determined by Win7. I can resize the window, but I would like it to be displayed correctly to begin with. So, my question is: What is the best way to correctly maintain a form size client area across OS'es? Thanks all.

  Hi ! I love doctests, it is the only testing framwork I use, because it is so quick to write, and because used with sphinx it makes such great documentations with almost no effort... However, very often, I end-up doing things like this : """ Descriptions ============= bla bla bla ... >>> test 1 bla bla bla + tests tests tests * 200 lines = poor readability of the actual code """ What I mean is that I put all my tests with documentation explanations on the top of the module, so you have to scroll stupidly to find the actual code, and this is quite ugly (in my opinion). However, I think that the doctests should still stay in the module, because you should be able to read them while reading the source code. So here comes my question : sphinx/doctests lovers, how do you organize your doctests, such as the code readability doesn't suffer ?

  Yes I know that it shouldn't be abused and that C# is primariy used as a static language. But seriously folks if you could just dirty up some code, in the python style, or create some dynamic do hicky, would you? My mind is working overtime on this having spent a while loving the dynamics of python, is c# going over to the dark side through the back door? Is the argument for static typing a dead one with this obvious addition? Is the argument for less Unit testing a bit silly when we are all grown ups? Or has the addition of dynamics ruined a strongly static typed and well designed language?

  I am a long time agile advocated but one of the things that bothers me about Agile is that a lot of agile practitioners, especially the younger ones, have thrown out or are missing a whole lot of good (non Scrum, non XP) practices. Alistair Cockburn's style of writing Use Cases springs to mind; orthogonal arrays (pairwise testing) is another. I hope this is an okay forum to ask this, but since I read mostly Agile related books and articles and work with mostly Agile folk ... is there anything I'm missing? Thanks for all your help. The following is the textarea of the web form I created to allow me to update twitter. <textarea name="updatestatus" cols="50" rows="4" id="updatestatus"> </textarea> Do I change this line in my confirm.php script from $status = 'Testing API'; To this $status=$_POST["updatestatus"]; I am wanting to know if I at least got that right so I can look at other possible problems with this form not being able to update twitter. As it stands now I am manually editing the status each time and it works that way perfectly but have not yet figured out how to get a webform to do this.

• InetAddress.getLocalHost() throws UnknownHostException

  Hi, I am testing our server-application (written Java) on different operating systems and thought that OpenSolaris (2008.11) would be the least troublesome due to the nice Java integration. Turns out I was wrong, as I end up with a UnknownHostException try { computerName = InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName(); if (computerName.indexOf(".") > -1) computerName = computerName.substring(0, computerName.indexOf(".")).toUpperCase(); } catch (UnknownHostException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } The output is: java.net.UnknownHostException: desvearth01: desvearth01 at java.net.InetAddress.getLocalHost(InetAddress.java:1353) However, nslookup desvearth01 returns the correct IP address, and nslookup localhost returns 127.0.0.1 as expected. Also, the same code works perfectly on FreeBSD. Is there anything special to OpenSolaris that I am not aware of? Any hints appreciated, thanks.

  I have a controller action that is accepting sensitive data. public ActionResult TakeSensitiveData(SensitiveData data){ data.SaveSomewhere(); } To ensure the data is secure I want to be certain requests are made using HTTPS (SSLv3, TLS 1). One of the approaches I've considered using was the RequireHttpsAttribute on my action: [RequireHttps] public ActionResult TakeSensitiveData(SensitiveData data){ data.SaveSomewhere(); } However, upon testing this I fiddler revealed that an HTTP request made to the action is 302 redirected to HTTPS. My question is this: If I've made a request that is 302 redirected to HTTPS haven't I already sent the sensitive data over HTTP before the redirect?

I don't want to load all the file in memory (of the server), of course. server side I have this idea: ... request.setHeader('Content-Type', 'text/plain') fp = open(fileName, 'rb') try: r = None while r != '': r = fp.read(1024) request.write(r) finally: fp.close() request.finish() I expected this to work, but I have problems: I'm testing with FF... It seems the browser make me wait until the file is completed downloaded, and then I have the open/save dialog box. I expected the dialog box immediately, and then the progress bar in action... Maybe I have to add something in the Http header... Something like the size of the file?

  I have always developed my projects using MAMP locally and once done simply uploaded everything to a live server. However, I'm wanting to integrate some FB functionality in my current project and I believe I'm correct in saying that it is not possible to fully test FB integration locally. My problem is I don't want to release the project I'm working on until it's finished (or at least nearly finished!) by placing it on a live server. I don't even want people to see a login screen or anything. Is there a way I can upload everything to my domain for testing purposes but prevent anyone apart from me from accessing the site?

  Trying to get the width and height of the uploaded image while still in the model on the initial save. Any way to do this? Here's the snippet of code I've been testing with from my model. • Using SmtpClient.Send to send ~500-2500 emails what way would be faster.

  I'm needing to send around 500-2500 emails out at a time to internal email accounts. I'm wondering which was would be faster both for the mail server and for my client app. Should I send multiple emails with just different TO addresses, or just one with multiple BCC addresses? I tried testing this by sending a bunch to my own email and the multiple emails method work, but with the BCC and a single message I only get that single message in my inbox. Shouldn't I be getting as many copies as the number of times I put my address in the BCC line?

  During a code review I presented a method quickly to the team that I had made static and one person agreed that there was no reason for it to not be static and a person disagreed saying that he would not make it static because it wasn't necessary and just to be on the safe side for future modifications and testing. • Background image fixed with vertical scroll bar in IE

  I have a gradient background image in my web application, it goes from dark at the top to light at the bottom. In Firefox, this image is handled properly, where upon scrolling vertically downwards on the page, the dark top section disappears. However, when I started testing in IE (I'm using IE8) the background image stays fixed behind the screen as you vertically scroll, meaning the dark top section of the background image is always rendered at the top of the IE view. I've set the background tag to have scroll defined, which from all I can tell should solve the problem, but IE is not happy. background: #470077 url( images/abcd.jpg ) repeat-x scroll; I made sure to be clearing the data in IE in case it was caching the old style before I added scroll.
