• samba share not allowing windows pc to access

  I have been trying to no avail, to share folders on my ubuntu pc with a windows network. The windows network isn't a homegroup, just a straight up access to folders made public. I can see the ubuntu shares I make, but when I try to access them I get a permission denied contact your system administrator type message. Could someone clarify the area re adding a user to samba, as there are about 30 different unix usernames! I just want my windows network to have unrestricted access to my linux folders. Any help would be greatly appreciated

• Automatically sync a folder to a USB when USB is plugged in?

  Is there a way to sync a folder to an USB drive when the drive is plugged in? I'd like it to sync, or copy over changes, both ways. I've seen the Back In Time and Unison-GTK applications, but I'd like for it to run as soon as the drive is mounted. What I mean is, unintrusively sync the two folders without any input from myself besides setting it up. If this isn't possible, is it possible to run the application when the thumb drive is plugged in to remind myself to sync manually? Thanks!

  10 latest updates and drivers and I need to run a game called unreal tournament, but in terminal it requires 2 commands The first one is to mount into the folder: cd /usr/local/games/ut2004/ and then the second one is to open the actual game: sudo aoss ./ut2004 In one shortcut i can only fit 1 command but both don't fit in is there any way i can turn these 2 commands into one? Perhaps turni9ng on the desktop shortcut already mounted into the folder? Any help would be really appreciated because im getting kinda sick of using the terminal to run it every time.

  So I installed Ubuntu 12.04, I'm very new at this and want to get into the world of Linux but have run into nothing but problems. I have an Acer Aspire 5553g. First off, my keyboard won't work. Second, my computer has more than enough of everything to run Ubuntu smoothly, but everything runs extremely slow. (You move the mouse and it gets there a few seconds later) It's to the point where I can't even use it and I really want to. I'm tired of Microsoft stuff and I've been looking at learning how to use Linux based operating systems for a while. Please send me some help to fix these issues and maybe some tips to help get me started. Thanks in advance chris

  I'm using Ubuntu 9.1 server edition, I get this error during boot time after I ran sudo apt-get upgrade when checking my kernel version, uname -r returns 2.6.31-14-generic but when i run dpkg -l 'linux-image*' | grep ^.i I cannot find 2.6.31-14 (only contains 2.6.32*) Following the solution in the thread: Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) doesn't work for me I'm running the commands inside the Rescue mode by booting from the Ubuntu 9.1 Installation Disc Do I need to update my kernel and run update-initramfs + update-grub again? • How to install again Update Manager after uninstalling it

  Ok, the thing is this I tried asking many times on few ubuntu forums how to deal with my non-responsive Update Manager, but all I was getting was the same stuff (run it from the terminal, run some lines, apt-get update blah blah). Nothing was helping. Eventually I went mad Windows style and tried to simply uninstall it and install it again. The problem is - how to install it again? Can't do it through Software Center, can't really build a package (because I'm too stupid to do that). And I seriously want to avoid reinstalling the whole system. I am running a 12.04 verison (Update Manager was unable to update to a newer one) Please help. I am furious with this thing.

  So, I tried uninstalling the LAMP stack I had following the Ubuntu documentation for it. I also manually removed dbconfig-common. Now, I'm unable to run apt-get update. When I do, I get the error message: E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/htp could not be found. After some digging, I've discovered that I no longer even have an /etc/apt/sources.list file. Also, I've received an error, when trying to run: sudo tasksel install lamp-server That aptitude can not be found. Does anyone have an idea of what I can do? I'm not able to find any documentation online that works - all the documentation out there is dated and no longer (or will not) work with 13.04. I followed this link previously prior to posting my question and it did not work for me: How do I fix a "E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/http could not be found." error?

• WinXp display driver incorrect to boot iso ubuntu 12.04

  I have Windows Xp on a HP Pavilion w/AMD Athlon 64 processor 3300+. I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 iso desktop. When trying to run Ubuntu, I get a line that says "sis 630 buss not detected. It continues and makes a blue screen, then says low graphics mode only and has a white screen. The HP has display adaptor sis 760, driver= 6.14.10.3671, 4/20/2005. I'm not familiar with ubuntu because I've never got it started as yet. Can the Ubuntu install process be changed to accept my sis 760 driver? I'm trying to make a Live CD(dvd) to run Ubuntu.

  I seem to recall Unity's Random is automatically seeded; checking the documentation it doesn't say it outright, but a certain interpretation of their words might seem to imply it. The seed is normally set from some arbitrary value like the system clock before the random number functions are used. This prevents the same run of values from occurring each time a game is played and thus avoids predictable gameplay. However, it is sometimes useful to produce the same run of pseudo-random values on demand by setting the seed yourself. (emphasis added)

• wkhtmltopdf displaying text as blocks

  We're using wkhtmltopdf in a web project (nodejs/compoundjs). We've gotten it working how we wanted on our machines (using the --use-xserver switch). However, when I try to run this on our Ubuntu server 12.04 (without the ubuntu-desktop package), the PDF cannot use the switch. When we disable the switch, the PDF displays any characters as blocks (image below). How do I resolve this without installing ubuntu-desktop and running x server? I've found liberation fonts, which installing ttf-liberation and fonts-liberation did not help. And urw-fonts, but I have yet to find an Ubuntu equivalent. EDIT: It just hit me, this doesn't matter if I'm on the server or not. On my development machine (Ubuntu 13.04 desktop), I can run the following, which produces the same blocks: wkhtmltopdf http://google.com google1.pdf While this prints out the pdf properly: wkhtmltopdf --use-xserver http://google.com google2.pdf My version of wkhtmltopdf is 0.12.0.

• "Time Control" in a 2d Platformer

  I am making a 2d platformer where the player can press a button, and restart the level, only their previous character will also run the level at the same time, like they are traveling back in time. I know other games have done this before, and the way I have thought of doing it is to make the game character have a set of actions (Idle, Jumping, Walking Left etc.) and then detect changes in those actions and log them into a list along with the game time. So then when I need the character to run the level again on its own, I can just go through the list changing its actions at the right time. Is this the best way to do it? Does anyone have any experience in this? Thanks.

  Here's how I see it. There's machine code and it's all that the computers needs in order to run something. The computers don't care about programming languages. It doesn't matter to them if the machine code comes from Perl, Python or PHP. Programming languages exist to serve programmers. Some programming languages run slower then others but that's not because there is something wrong with them. It's often because they do more things that otherwise programmers would do and by doing these things, they do better what they are supposed to do - serve programmers. So why are slower programming languages considered worse than faster ones?

  I've found WebGL (based on OpenGL) to be a fiendish and unforgiving framework for those learning to write HTML5-based games. Despite the presence of many examples on how to get started, I'm really struggling to understand how I could simply load a bunch of images and render them to a canvas quickly using WebGL. My specific scenario involves trying to render a map using a bespoke but simple multi-layered tile engine, where each value in a three dimensional array points to the image to use for that location in the rendered image. Think "Sonic the Hedgehog" via tilesets, tiles, maps, layers, sprites etc. Can anyone enlighten me: 1) How can I load an image that I can use as a texture in WebGL? 2) How can I dynamically select an image at run time and draw it at any co-ordinate, that I also select at run time?

• Need a remote desktop to a headless server without logging in first

  I've been using Linux for many years now but only to run servers. Over the last few days I've been struggling with a technical / configuration issue which I hope someone can help with. I've installed / un-installed many packages but just can't figure out what the "right" way of doing this is. The requirement seems simple Server runs Ubuntu 10.04 with xubuntu and SSH (I do NOT want to connect any screen, keyboard or mouse to the server) I have Windows 7 machine with putty on it and logging in to the server using SSH is fine I want to run an xterminal session on my Windows machine. Amongst the things I've tried is VNU but I can't get it to work because I believe you have to login on the server first. Thanks in advance

When I went to run todolist.exe, it started fine with the "first time wizard" (asking me where to save definitions and what file to open first), and then it stopped saying "the program todolist.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience". What can I do to make this (great) software work on ubuntu? Thanks.

  We have previously covered how to send the contents of a text file to the Windows Clipboard with a simple Send To shortcut, but what if you want to do the opposite? That is: send the contents of the clipboard to a text file with a simple shortcut. No problem. Here’s how. Copy the ClipOut Utility While Windows offers the command line tool ‘clip’ as a way to direct console output to the clipboard, it does not have a tool to direct the clipboard contents to the console. To do this, we are going to use a small utility named ClipOut (download link at the bottom). Simply download and extract this file to a location in your Windows PATH variable (if you don’t know what this means, just extract the EXE to your C:\Windows folder) and you are ready to go. Add the Send To Shortcut Open your Send To folder location by going to Run > shell:sendto Create a new shortcut with the command: CMD /C ClipOut > Note the above command will overwrite the contents of the selected file. If you would like to append to the contents of the selected file, use this command instead: CMD /C ClipOut >> Of course, you could make shortcuts for both. Give a descriptive name to the shortcut. You’re finished. Using this shortcut will now send the text contents copied to your Windows Clipboard to the selected file. It is important to note that the ClipOut tool only supports outputting text. If you had binary data copied to your clipboard, then the output would be empty. Changing the Icon By default, the icon for the shortcut will appear as a command prompt, but you can easily change this by editing the properties of the shortcut and clicking the Change Icon button. We used an icon located in “%SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll”, but any icon of your liking will do. As an additional tweak, you can set the properties of the shortcut to run minimized. • Cannot boot from Ubuntu USB

  I create a ubuntu 10.10 bootable USB via the method that is described on the download page of ubuntu. I made that from windows and also from ubuntu 10.04 (I have dual boot). When I boot from the USB made, the menu shows and when I run it, it gives a beep and nothing else. It never boots. USB creation from both methods result the same. I downloaded ubuntu via the torrent provided from Ubuntu. Any help will be very appreciated. I want to make my USB just like a Live CD so that I can run it on some other computers also.

  I have googled for the answer all day and still couldn't find an answer. I have a virtual subdomain www.static.example.com which is a mirror site of www.example.com. It means I have just one root folder for subdomain and domain aswell. I want to redirect crawlers to different robots.txt file - robots_static.txt when they see .static in url in which I will forbid indexing via /disallow command. I want to do this because I have duplicated content in Google search results. Subdomain is showing the exact same content as the main domain. Does anyone know how could I achieve that crawlers sees robots_static.txt instead of robots.txt? • unit testing on ARM

  We are developing application level code that runs on an ARM processor. The BSP (low level code) is being delivered by a 3d party so our code sits just on top of this abstraction layer (code is written in c++). To do unit testing, I assume we will have to mock/stub out the BSP library(essentially abstracting out the HW), but what I'm not sure of is if I write/run the unit test on my pc, do I compile it with for example GCC? Normally we use Realview compiler to compile our code for the ARM. Can I assume that if I compile and run the code with x86 compiler and the unit tests pass that it will also pass when compiled with RealView compiler? I'm not sure how much difference the compiler makes and if you can trust that if the x86 compiled code pass the unit tests that you can also be confident that the Realview compiled code is ok.

Does Someone know an issue for this infinite loop? For information, I configured my OpenAM : Yo encode the cookies, use c66encode.

• How to protect Ubuntu from fork bomb

  I heard someone talking about a fork bomb, I did some research and found some dreadful information about some strange looking characters people can have you type at the command line and as a result do bad things on the computer. I certainly would not issue commands I do not understand but one never knows what can happen. I heard that some OS allows the administrator to place some limit on user processes to mitigate the effects of fork bombs, is this protection in Ubuntu by default or would a person with sudo privilege have to set this? If so, how?
