  hi all, i am currently refactoring an existing codebase (EJBs...) to rip out all blocks where a Throwable is catched inside of the EJB. try { ... do some business logic } catch(Throwable t){ ... log and swallow ... :-( } i want/need to convince the people around me with proper documentation that "catching throwable" is a no-go for an EJB (we have lots of discussions around this :-(( ). weblogic will handle all the "Error" conditions and maybe invalidate EJBs and put fresh(working) EJBs into the pool. catching Throwable would undermine all these security nets provided by weblogic. and catching throwable is bad practice anyway (but people here are reluctant and use the "throwable" hammer everywhere). is anyone able to point me to some online docs where this behaviour is explained (for weblogic or jboss or...). i searched via google and had a look at the weblogic docs but wasn't able to find anything, just generic java doc. any help highly appreciated cheers marcel

  I was trying to speed up some code, and then I tried compiling a class and a function using cython and WOW! I havn't measured it yet but it looks at least 10x faster. I first looked at cython just two days ago, I'm very impressed! However, I can't get eval() to work. def thefirst(int a): d = eval('1+2+a') return d I compile this to module1.pyd file and call it with the python file: from module1 import thefirst x = thefirst(2) print x This returns: NameError: name 'a' is not defined. • Avoid painting over nested controls

  I am writing a toolbar-style control and use the ThemeServices unit to paint the background required by the toolbar. Like so: ThemeServices.DrawElement(Canvas.Handle, ThemeServices.GetElementDetails(trRebarRoot), ARect); I then drop child controls onto the toolbar and voila - instant toolbar. Except that every now and again I notice that the nested (child) controls don't repaint as well. So my control paints its background and the child controls disappear until you move the mouse over them. Some of the edit controls show their client area (no border) and some of them are just gone altogether. This happens mostly when I place a window from another application over the toolbar and move it away. I keep thinking this has to be very easy to cure, that perhaps I'm somehow preventing the paint message from reaching the child controls, or missing an override but I have been unable to figure it out.

  I made a package which I can use like this: select * from table(my_package.my_function(99, 'something, something2', 1, 50)) I make use of the package in a stored procedure. Sample stored procedure looks like: insert into something values(...) from (select * from table(my_package.my_function(99, 'something, something2', 1, 50))) a other_table b where b.something1 = a.something1; open cv_1 for select count(*) from table(my_package.my_function(99, 'something, something2', 1, 50)) So I am calling the same package twice. first time to match records with other tables and other stuff and second time to get the count. Is there a way to get the count first time around and put it into a variable and second time around I just pick that variable rather than calling the whole query again? Hope it makes sense.

In the same bar where the menu appears there is an item called Browser Mode: it still shows IE 8 by default. Even doing document.documentMode in the console window shows "8". Am I doing anything wrong?

  Hello! I am stuck on the CSS part, am helping a friend to implement one thing on her webpage. Its a dropdown menu and i got everything working the way i want it to. My problem is that it moves itself to the beginning of the row? http://gazet.se/TestPages/Test.aspx Its just below the logo and as you can see, its on the correct line but not in the correct position (should be between the purple "Nyhetsbrev" and the black "Experthörnan"-images, but it ends up on the beginning of the row instead? Any ideas?

  We are using JMX for communication between different EARs on the same Websphere application server (6.1). All works well if we only use Java types as arguments, but if we use or own the problem is that we get ClassCastExceptions on the receiver side. This is obviously a classloader problem: if the jar with the argument types is put into the JRE endorsed directory, such that all classloaders use exactly the same class, the Exception disappear. But we would much prefer to put the library that defines the argument types in the EAR itself. Now my question: is there a trick to persuade WAS to serialize and deserialize the arguments during the JMX call? I guess in this case the ClassCastException would dissappear.

  When using a SAX parser, parsing fails when there is a " in the node content. How can I resolve this? Do I need to convert all " characters? In other words, anytime I have a quote in a node: <node>characters in node containing "quotes"</node> That node gets butchered into multiple character arrays when the Handler is parsing it. Is this normal behaviour? Why should quotes cause such a problem? I assure you, the path does exist with the space in it on my machine. What's the best way to call this command line from Powershell? I've tried Invoke-Expression, Diagnostic.Process::Start, &; each method coming up with some different type of error; usually that it could find the executable. • Optimising RSS parsing on App Engine to avoid high CPU warnings

  I'm pulling some RSS feeds into a datastore in App Engine to serve up to an iPhone app. I use cron to schedule updating the RSS every x minutes. Each task only parses one RSS feed (which has 15-20 items). I frequently get warnings about high CPU usage in the App Engine dashboard, so I'm looking for ways to optimise my code. Currently, I use minidom (since it's already there on App Engine), but I suspect it's not very efficient! What can I do to make this faster? Is there anything particularly bad in the above code, or should I change to another way of parsing? Are there are any libraries (that work on App Engine) that would be better, or would I be better parsing the RSS myself?

• Reference-type conversion operators: asking for trouble?

  When I compile the following code using g++ class A {}; void foo(A&) {} int main() { foo(A()); return 0; } I get the following error messages: > g++ test.cpp -o test test.cpp: In function ‘int main()’: test.cpp:10: error: invalid initialization of non-const reference of type ‘A&’ from a temporary of type ‘A’ test.cpp:6: error: in passing argument 1 of ‘void foo(A&)’ After some reflection, these errors make plenty of sense to me. A() is just a temporary value, not an assignable location on the stack, so it wouldn't seem to have an address. If it doesn't have an address, then I can't hold a reference to it. Okay, fine. But wait! If I add the following conversion operator to the class A class A { public: operator A&() { return *this; } }; then all is well! My question is whether this even remotely safe. What exactly does this point to when A() is constructed as a temporary value? I am given some confidence by the fact that void foo(const A&) {} can accept temporary values according to g++ and all other compilers I've used. The const keyword can always be cast away, so it would surprise me if there were any actual semantic differences between a const A& parameter and an A& parameter. So I guess that's another way of asking my question: why is a const reference to a temporary value considered safe by the compiler whereas a non-const reference is not?

• Trouble creating a Java policy server for a simple Flash app

  I'm trying to create a simple Flash chat application for educational purposes, but I'm stuck trying to send a policy file from my Java server to the Flash app (after several hours of googling with little luck). The policy file request reaches the server that sends a harcoded policy xml back to the app, but the Flash app doesn't seem to react to it at all until it gives me a security sandbox error. • iPhone: Having trouble figuring out how to scroll a UITableView with custom UITextField cells automa

  Ok, I know this seems like a duplicate question, but don't think it is. I actually have this implemented already (thanks to this SO question), but it seems sluggish. I am willing to tweak it a bit, but I ran across a demo app by AboutObjects that seems to have exactly the right functionality with absolutely no code doing it. I have looked through their demo code dozens of times, and I can't figure out what they are doing that I am not. The code to look at is in their iPhone Development Tutorials section, and is called "Editable TableView" (2nd from the bottom). There are a couple of questions on the forums on that site asking how they got the functionality, but there is no answer (other than "It's a built in function"). Does anyone have any clue as to why their UITableView would implement the input scrolling by default (including being able to scroll the view manually when the keyboard pops up, which I cannot get to work)?

  So here's the problem. I have data in a MySQL DB as text. The data is inserted via mysql_real_escape_string. I have no problem with the data being displayed to the user. This is infrequent enough where extreme performance is not an issue but... Question - is there a better way ?
