  • Screencast: "Unlocking the Java EE Platform with HTML5"

    - by Geertjan
The Java EE platform aims to increase your productivity and reduce the amount of scaffolding code needed in Java enterprise applications. It encompasses a range of specifications, such as JPA, EJB, JSF, and JAX-RS. How do these specifications fit together in an application, and how do they relate to each other? And how can HTML5 be used to leverage Java EE? In this recording of a session I did last week at Oredev in Malmo, Sweden, you learn how Java EE works and how it can be integrated with HTML5 front ends, via HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

  • Using multiple column layout with HTML 5 and CSS 3

    - by nikolaosk
This is going to be the fourth post in a series of posts regarding HTML 5. You can find the other posts here , here and here. In this post I will provide a hands-on example with HTML 5 and CSS 3 on how to create a page with multiple columns and proper layout.I will show you how to use CSS 3 to create columns much easier than relying on DIV elements and the float CSS rule.I will also show you how to use browser-specific prefix rules (-ms for Internet Explorer and -moz for Firefox ) for browsers that do not fully support CSS 3.In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. There are other great resources for that.Navigate to the excellent interactive tutorials of W3School.Another excellent resource is HTML 5 Doctor. Two very nice sites that show you what features and specifications are implemented by various browsers and their versions are http://caniuse.com/ and http://html5test.com/. At this times Chrome seems to support most of HTML 5 specifications.Another excellent way to find out if the browser supports HTML 5 and CSS 3 features is to use the Javascript lightweight library Modernizr. In this hands-on example I will be using Expression Web 4.0.This application is not a free application. You can use any HTML editor you like. You can use Visual Studio 2012 Express edition. You can download it here.I will create a simple page with information about HTML 5, CSS 3 and JQuery. This is the full HTML 5 code. <!DOCTYPE html><html lang="en">  <head>    <title>HTML 5, CSS3 and JQuery</title>    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" >    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">       </head>  <body>    <div id="header">      <h1>Learn cutting edge technologies</h1>      <p>HTML 5, JQuery, CSS3</p>    </div>    <div id="main">      <div id="mainnews">        <div>          <h2>HTML 5</h2>        </div>        <div>          <p>            HTML5 is the latest version of HTML and XHTML. Despite these shortcomings we hope that by quantifying the level of support users and web developers will get an idea of how hard the browser manufacturers work on improving their browsers and the web as a development platform.</p>        </div>      </div>              <div id="CSS">        <div>          <h2>CSS 3 Intro</h2>        </div>        <div>          <p>          Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language used for describing the presentation semantics (the look and formatting) of a document written in a markup language. • Using CSS3 media queries in HTML 5 pages

    - by nikolaosk
This is going to be the seventh post in a series of posts regarding HTML 5. You can find the other posts here , here , here, here , here and here. In this post I will provide a hands-on example on how to use CSS 3 Media Queries in HTML 5 pages. This is a very important feature since nowadays lots of users view websites through their mobile devices. Web designers were able to define media-specific style sheets for quite a while, but have been limited to the type of output. The output could only be Screen, Print .The way we used to do things before CSS 3 was to have separate CSS files and the browser decided which style sheet to use. Please have a look at the snippet below - HTML 4 media queries <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" href="styles.css"> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="print" href="print-styles.css"> ?he browser determines which style to use. With CSS 3 we can have all media queries in one stylesheet. Media queries can determine the resolution of the device, the orientation of the device, the width and height of the device and the width and height of the browser window. We can also include CSS 3 media queries in separate stylesheets. In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. There are other great resources for that.Navigate to the excellent interactive tutorials of W3School. Another excellent resource is HTML 5 Doctor. You can download it here. Before I go on with the actual demo I will use the (http://www.caniuse.com) to see the support for CSS 3 Media Queries from the latest versions of modern browsers. Please have a look at the picture below. We see that all the latest versions of modern browsers support this feature. We can see that even IE 9 supports this feature.   Let's move on with the actual demo.  This is going to be a rather simple demo.I create a simple HTML 5 page. The markup follows and it is very easy to use and understand. This is a page with a 2 column layout. <!DOCTYPE html><html lang="en">  <head>    <title>HTML 5, CSS3 and JQuery</title>    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" >    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">       </head>  <body>    <div id="header">      <h1>Learn cutting edge technologies</h1>      <p>HTML 5, JQuery, CSS3</p>    </div>    <div id="main">      <div id="mainnews">        <div>          <h2>HTML 5</h2>        </div>        <div>          <p>            HTML5 is the latest version of HTML and XHTML. If this condition is true, then I add new rules for the body element. I change the number of columns to one. This rule will not be applied unless the maximum width is 480px or less.  As I decrease the size-width of the browser window I see no change in the column's layout. Have a look at the picture below. When I resize the window and the width of the browser so the width is less than 480px, the media query and its respective rules take effect. We can scroll vertically to view the content which is a more optimised viewing experience for mobile devices. Have a look at the picture below Hope it helps!!!!

  • Silverlight 3 - Data Binding Position of a rectangle on a canvas

    - by Blounty
Hi Everyone, I am currently trying to bind a collection of objects to a Canvas in Silverlight 3 using an ItemsControl as below: <ItemsControl x:Name="ctrl" ItemsSource="{Binding myObjectsCollection}"> <ItemsControl.ItemsPanel> <ItemsPanelTemplate> <Canvas></Canvas> </ItemsPanelTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemsPanel> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Rectangle Stroke="LightGray" Fill="Black" StrokeThickness="2" RadiusX="15" RadiusY="15" Canvas.Left="{Binding XAxis}" Height="25" Width="25"> </Rectangle> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> Unfortunately it seems the binding on the Canvas.Left is being ignored. From what i have learned here it would appear this is due to the items being placed inside a content presenter not the actual canvas i have specified in the items panel. Is there a way i can use data binding to determine the position of elements on a canvas?

  • Determine whether a canvas has been inserted into each page

    - by Hadi Teo
Hi, Currently i have a code which will print OMR Mark on each pages. Basically i insert a canvas into each page and subsequently an OMR Mark Line Series are inserted into the canvas. Recently i found an issue that somehow one of the canvas is placed out of a page and it appears at the previous page instead of the current page. Below is the code snippet in how i inserted canvas as well as OMR Marks into each page: ' Start Code Snippet Sub GenerateOMR() Dim ShpCanvas As Shape Dim MaxPages As Integer Dim PNo As Integer ClearOMR MaxPages = Selection.Information(wdNumberOfPagesInDocument) For PNo = 1 To MaxPages Selection.GoTo What:=wdGoToPage, Which:=wdGoToFirst, Count:=PNo, Name:="" Select Case PNo Case 1 Set ShpCanvas = ActiveDocument.Shapes.AddCanvas(0, 0.5, 600, 300) Case Else Set ShpCanvas = ActiveDocument.Shapes.AddCanvas(0, 0, 600, 300) End Select ' Add a canvas on each page With ShpCanvas .Name = "OMR_Canvas_" & CStr(PNo) .RelativeHorizontalPosition = wdRelativeHorizontalPositionPage .RelativeVerticalPosition = wdRelativeVerticalPositionPage End With ' Insert a white background rectange and remove the rectangle border line With ShpCanvas.CanvasItems.AddShape(msoShapeRectangle, 536, 0, 64, 300) .Name = "OMR_WhiteBackground_" & CStr(PNo) .Fill.ForeColor.RGB = RGB(255, 255, 255) .Line.ForeColor.RGB = RGB(255, 255, 255) End With PrintOMRPage ShpCanvas, PNo Next PNo End Sub ' End Code Snippet There is a custom method called PrintOMRPage method which is not relevant here. My question now, how do i know whether a canvas has been inserted into a page ? Basically i will loop in all the pages and check whether a canvas has been inserted into that page. Apparently i cannot find the correct way. I have tried to check using ActiveDocument.Shapes(1).Top and validate whether the Top position is a negative value. But apparently the Top position is always measured from the top of each page. Thanks for the help. hadi teo

  • creating a simulation game, what type of knowledge is needed? [closed]

    - by Jordan
I am a beginner in game development. As a part of learning and fun, want to create a game in java-script and html5. I am planning a game that we were used to play in childhood, that is "new business"- a monopoly game, in that we used to buy ,rent, sell places and bank we get some money to play and etc. are features. Its just simple ludo like game. So can anyone suggest me from where to start? what will be the designing? Is it possible to create it only in a html5 and java-script.

  • Mobile app technology choice - popularity trend data?

    - by Ryan Weir
I'm familiar with the arguments for HTML5 apps over native, but was looking for some numbers or data to indicate a trend of how popular they are relative to each other for mobile app development. E.g. Surveys among programmers, data collected from the various app stores, number of downloads of development tools for those platforms. Your source could consider new apps, existing apps, categorized by downloads, app downloads weighted by popularity - basically any source you've got I would like to see. In my own personal monkey-sphere of developers, HTML5 seems to be starting to dominate as of about 6 months ago over iOS and Android by a wide margin as the technology stack preference - so I was wondering if this reflects a trend that's been measured globally and if there was objective data to support it.

  • Asciifi Is a Lightening Fast Web-Based ASCII Converter

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you have a hankering from some old-school ASCII artwork, Asciifi is a free and lightening fast HTML5 ASCII converter. Despite the simplicity of ASCII images (pictures created not out of a grid of colored pixels like a standard digital photograph but out of a grid of text characters) many ASCII converters are rather slow. Asciifi speeds up the process by rendering your images on the fly with a snappy HTML5-based converter. Visit the site, drag and drop your image, and almost instantaneously you’ll see the results. The output can be further tweaked by adjusting the line width and the character set used. Hit up the link below to take it for a test drive. • Html Buttons with Triangles [migrated]

    - by Dmitry
I'm looking for the simplest way of creating 'buttons' with bootom-central triangles as follows: |--------| | Text | |---\/---| By buttons/menu items I mean something which will will support atomic mouse behavior for the whole shape's region. No rounded corners just the shape itself. I saw plenty of websites doing thsese buttons lately, but now for some strange reason I couldn't find any. Ideally I'm looking for tutorial links or some general guidances, as the topic might be too big to be covered by one post. Technology scope wise - ideally I'm looking for Html5/Css3 solution. I don't care mouch about old IE support and I think Html5/css3 will give a slicker/more elegant solution. On the way forward I might need to add drop shadows, which is another argument in favour of css3. Thanks.

    - by Bibo
I want to add videos to my website. I want to click on images and then to show video in "window" and start playing (popups like lightbox). I just don´t know what is best way to do it. I think one of the way is jQuery. I know that there is easy way with video tag in HTML5 but I want that this could be play on most browsers (not just with support HTML5, but not so old as IE6 :) ) and I don´t want to use flash or silverlight. What options I have? Is jQuery the way? And how can I do this? Thanks

  • 2D Game Dev Resources/Tutorials for Windows (Phone) 8 Development?

    - by Ilya Knaup
I am really exited about the launch of windows 8, windows phone 8 so I decided to start learning how to develop games for them. I was even more exited when I found out that html, css, javascript can be used to develop apps for these platforms. I'm familiar with some standard html, css3 that i used to develop some websites, but I only know some VERY basics of javascript. I know things like HTML5 canvas and image sprites can be used to develop games, but I haven't found any tutorials that I understood good enough ;/ So I am asking you now. Can you suggest any good tutorials/resources (preferably video) that start from beginners level and go to advanced into game development with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. It would be really good if such tutorials concentrated on game development for mobile phones (e.g. detecting when user touches the screen, using optimised images for hi res and standard displays, adopting to screen size etc) Oh.. and I forgot to mention that I am only interested in 2d game development.

"Web Intents" were deprecated in Chrome 24 (November/2011) and are no longer supported in any browser: We also gathered a lot of valuable data and feedback from our experimental support for Web Intents and decided to disable the feature in today's Beta release. Is there an HTML5 standard that I can look into as an alternative to what Web Intents intended? I'm interested in how web services can be stitched together. For example, imagine a website that can import a image from any number of web-services, modify the image in some way, then push the file back to any number of other web-services, all via HTML5 standards.

  • Is there a better way to have a two column website with header and footer, equal height columns and stretchy column widths? [closed]

    - by Seamus
I wrote a website a while ago that is a little messy in how it does things. I used this CSS template and this equal height columns trick. I have not one but two container divs and I can't remember what they're doing. So I'm thinking of re structuring the thing from scratch, and possibly making use of the more "semantic" html5 tags like <nav> and so on at the same time. The question is: is there a better way to achieve a site structure with these properties: 2 equal height main columns (with widths as percentages of the available real estate, not explicitly stated) both a header and footer element that stretch the whole width of the total of the two main columns That allows the use of semantic html5 tags instead of meaningless divs

  • Are there any adverse side effects to loading html5shiv in every browser?

    - by Jeff
On the html5shiv Google Code page the example usage includes an IE conditional: <!--[if lt IE 9]> <script src="dist/html5shiv.js"></script> <![endif]--> However on the html5shiv github page, the description explains: This script is the defacto way to enable use of HTML5 sectioning elements in legacy Internet Explorer, as well as default HTML5 styling in Internet Explorer 6 - 9, Safari 4.x (and iPhone 3.x), and Firefox 3.x. An obvious contradiction. So to satisfy my curiosity, for anyone who has studied the code, are there any adverse side affects to loading html5shiv in every browser (without the IE conditional)? EDIT: My goal, obviously, is to use the shiv without the IE conditional.

  • Facebook canvas app showing wordpress blog in iframe - how to link to specific pages?

    - by James Olney
Sorry for the cumbersome title. I have a Facebook canvas app that is call up a Wordpress site in an iFrame. This is fine and works as hoped but is there a way to link directly to a page within it? For example the page I want to reach is actually: www.blog.com/monkeys/ But I want to be able to use a link like this: www.facebook.com/monkeyblogapp/app_243495067635997/monkeys/ So that I can give out that URL and get people to see the right bit of content but within the Facebook environment. I have seen people mention callback urls (like this one which as far as I can tell just means having the app addresses match the website Direct links to pages in Facebook iFrame application?) but that doesn't work. Any suggestions? many thanks James

  • Adding and altering multiple text items to a Canvas -- what approach?

    - by philologon
I am attempting to use a Canvas to create a simple Cad application. I have been able to get lines to draw as I want. For now the only other thing I need is text. The user should be able to edit the text in place. ?Is one of these better to use for this over the others? Rich Text TextBlock TextBox Label A more important question, though, is once I have chosen which class to use for implementation, how do I set and get the text value in code? Since the app is in essence a cad application, text will be added, deleted, and altered often, so I am not attempting to put these in XAML, but code-behind. That is why I am asking about how to do this in code. If the answer is "use X.SetValue()" (or that family of methods), then please tell me what I am supposed to do with the required DependencyProperty reference? TIA. Paul
