• Give back full control to a user on a disk from another computer

  I have my friend's hard drive mounted externally. After messing with the permissions with TAKEOWN so I could fix some viruses, I have full control over their drive. The problem is, now it's stuck in a "autochk not found" reboot sequence. I think the problem is that the boot sector is invisible to the drive now. So my question is, How can I use icacls to give back the full ownership, when the user I am giving it to is not on my machine? I ran the TAKEOWN command from my windows 7 laptop, their machine is a windows xp Professional with three partitions, I only altered the one that has the boot sector. • Starting a new business with former colleagues, advice needed

  I was recently contacted by a former boss of mine who is thinking of starting a new business. The business will be online only it will by my job to design, build, and maintain the software going into it. I will also have to maintain the server it's running on, being the only technical person on the team. I will be one of four members of the business, the other three being the actual business know-hows and salesmen. The other three are shouldering the cost of getting the business going (incorporation, attorney fees, etc) and we will be splitting the cost of the server. I have no business knowledge at all, and don't want any part of it, I am only interested in the technical aspects. Now that we are finalizing our plans, determining roles, and getting ready to start actual work, we have come to the point where we have to determine what percentage stake each of us has. Since I have never done anything like this before, or met anyone that has, I don't know what I should expect. Can anyone give me some pointers on what to ask for in this deal?

• Ajax request (from .NET) give me unexpected results

  I wanted to learn a little more about web and .NET so i decided to write a program to download binaries, webpages and does a little ajax. The first download site i tried was too easy. So i went against uploading.com. It seemed good, no captcha, some ajax use required, you cant guess all the data, it was perfect. After 2hours of messing around i got frustrated. For the life of me i could not get the ajax response to give me what i was expecting. I decided to use tamper data clear my cookies, click on the entry for the ajax request. Copy the Referer, cookies and postdata and came up with this code. It does not work! I am shocked that copying those fields did not work. I even tried setting the user agent (not in code linked) and it still did not work. Why isnt this POST on the ajax request not giving me the correct file? I notice the JsHttpRequest=12719132559480-xml changes based on time so if you want to run the code you should grab a new snapshot with tamperdata (or at least update that url). I dont see any extra headers in tamper data so does anyone know why i might not be getting the response expected? I know disabling cookies or javascript will make the link 'expired' automatically. I dont think javascript will matter because i got the data from tamperdata at the moment of request so what gives? What am i forgetting or what data am i not submitting properly?

• JPA2 adding referential contraint to table complicates criteria query with lazy fetch, need advice

  Following is a lot of writing for what I feel is a pretty simple issue. Root of issue is my ignorance, not looking so much for code but advice. Table: Ininvhst (Inventory-schema inventory history) column ihtran (inventory history transfer code) using an old entity mapping I have: @Basic(optional = false) @Column(name = "IHTRAN") private String ihtran; ihtran is really a foreign key to table Intrnmst ("Inventory Transfer Master" which contains a list of "transfer codes"). This was not expressed in the database so placed a referential constraint on Ininvhst re-generating JPA2 entity classes produced: @JoinColumn(name = "IHTRAN", referencedColumnName = "TMCODE", nullable = false) @ManyToOne(optional = false) private Intrnmst intrnmst; Now previously I was using JPA2 to select the records/(Ininvhst entities) from the Ininvhst table where "ihtran" was one of a set of values. I used in.value() to do this... here is a snippet: cq = cb.createQuery(Ininvhst.class); ... Or should I use a projection to return Ininvhst and somehow limit Intrnmst just just the ihtran string. Further information: I am using the resulting list of selected Ininvhst objects in a web application, the class which contains the list of Ininvhst objects is transformed into a json object. There are probably quite a few serialization methods that would navigate the object graph the problem is that my current fetch strategy is lazy so it hits the join entity (Intrnmst intrnmst) and there is no Entity Manager available at that point. At this point I have prevented the object from serializing the join column but now I am missing a critical piece of data. I think I've said too much but not knowing enough I don't know what you JPA experts need. What I would like is my original object to have both a string object and be able to join on the same column (ihtran) and have it as a string too, but if this isn't possible or advisable I want to hear what I should do and why. Pseudo code/English is more than fine.

Note two differences in semantics: firstly, df $path insists that $path names an existing file, the script I had above doesn't care; secondly, there are no worries about dereferncing symlinks. It's not difficult to write Python code to do the job.

• Advice on Minimizing Stored Procedure Parameters

  Hi Guys, I have an ASP.NET MVC Web Application that interacts with a SQL Server 2008 database via Entity Framework 4.0. On a particular page, i call a stored procedure in order to pull back some results based on selections on the UI. Now, the UI has around 20 different input selections, ranging from a textbox, dropdown list, checkboxes, etc. Each of those inputs are "grouped" into logical sections. Example: Search box : "Foo" Checkbox A1: ticked, Checkbox A2: unticked Dropdown A: option 3 selected Checkbox B1: ticked, Checkbox B2: ticked, Checkbox B3: unticked So i need to call the SPROC like this: exec SearchPage_FindResults @SearchQuery = 'Foo', @IncludeA1 = 1, @IncludeA2 = 0, @DropDownSelection = 3, @IncludeB1 = 1, @IncludeB2 = 1, @IncludeB3 = 0 The UI is not too important to this question - just wanted to give some perspective. Essentially, i'm pulling back results for a search query, filtering these results based on a bunch of (optional) selections a user can filter on. Now, My questions/queries: What's the best way to pass these parameters to the stored procedure? Are there any tricks/new ways (e.g SQL Server 2008) to do this? Special "table" parameters/arrays - can we pass through User-Defined-Types? Keep in mind im using Entity Framework 4.0 - but could always use classic ADO.NET for this if required. What about XML? What are the serialization/de-serialization costs here? Is it worth it? How about a parameter for each logical section? Comma-seperated perhaps? Just thinking out loud. This page is particulary important from a user point of view, and needs to perform really well. The stored procedure is already heavy in logic, so i want to minimize the performance implications - so keep that in mind. With that said - what is the best approach here?

• Can't give my custom prototype cells in tableview different heights

  I have a few questions about my job opportunities and I appreaciate it if people could give me some feedback on what I should have in front of me. I am graduatating from a University of Wisconsin--La Crosse this December with a degree in CS and a math minor. I have a cumulative GPA of 3.84 and a major GPA of 4.0 right now (though I still have many classes in front of me). I already have a degree from the U of Minnesota (History, 3.69 GPA) and have worked in the business world for 3+ years (working for a small company in the baseball world, doing some computer programming, statistical research, operations work, technical writing, etc.) I know Java and C well, also am comfortable with Perl. I should have a good grasp of SQL by graduation. I am looking to get a nice programming job (and will be open to moving). Anyone have any advice on things I should learn etc? Also, I would like to know what everyone thinks about my chances of landing a decent job (I realize that is subjective). Also, any ideas on salary I should be looking for (say I am working a metropolitan area). Thanks.

• Reuse, Rewrite, or Refactor?

  At work I inherited development of a PHP-based Web site after the consultant who originally produced it bailed out and left without a trace. Literally half of the code is ripped from online tutorials, and there are thousands of lines of cruft that, being incomplete, do precious little. Hardly any of it actually works. I've been trying to pull out the usable components, such as the layout (cleverly intermixed with code), session management (delicately seasoned with unescaped, unvalidated SQL queries), and a few other things, but it's very difficult to force all of this junk into place. Further, I don't speak idiomatic PHP, being more of a Perl user, and I'm supposed to be on this project principally for maintenance, so rewriting everything seems like it would take just as long as wrestling the existing monster back into place. As an aside, I have literally never seen anything as badly written as this. Welcome me to the world of working with other people's code, I guess, but I do hope it's not this common in the real world to have such gems as these: // WHY IS THIS NOT WORKING // I know this is bad but were going for working stuff right now... // This is a PHP code outputing Javascript code outputting HTML...do not go further // Not userful I'm looking for the best advice I can get here.   Hello Note: this is an extension of a question I just asked, i have made the edits & taken the advice but still no luck I am trying to make a webpage where when you click a link, the link moves diagonally every 100 milliseconds. • Design advice for avoiding change in several classes

  Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to design a small application more elegantly, and make it more resistant to change. Basically it is a sort of project price calculator, and the problem is that there are many parameters that can affect the pricing. I'm trying to avoid cluttering the code with a lot of if-clauses for each parameter, but still I have e.g. if-clauses in two places checking for the value of the size parameter. I have the Head First Design Patterns book, and have tried to find ideas there, but the closest I got was the decorator pattern, which has an example where starbuzz coffee sets prices depending first on condiments added, and then later in an exercise by adding a size parameter (Tall, Grande, Venti). But that didn't seem to help, because adding that parameter still seemed to add if-clause complexity in a lot of places (and this being an exercise they didn't explain that further). What I am trying to avoid is having to change several classes if a parameter were to change or a new parameter added, or at least change in as few places as possible (there's some fancy design principle word for this that I don't rememeber :-)). Here below is the code. Basically it calculates the price for a project that has the tasks "Writing" and "Analysis" with a size parameter and different pricing models. There will be other parameters coming in later too, like "How new is the product?" • Have any software engineers gotten math degrees later in their careers?

  I have a bachelors in computer science and worked the last 12 years as a software engineer. I'm bored with doing general development work, so I want to specialize. I'm thinking about getting a master's degree in math so I can build math models and write algorithms to implement them. I'm unsure what type of work I'd do (financial, gaming, graphics, science, research, etc) but I'm open minded. I would need to refresh my undergrad math skills (which are old and faded), but I loved algebra and calculus. I've been working with couple statisticians so I've been finding myself more interested in statistics. Since I'm a parent supporting a household, I would have to continue working while studying. Have any software engineers taken this route? (Specifically, going from BS in comp sci to MS in math.) If so, what advice do you have for coursework, financing, and getting a job that combines programming with advanced math? How abundant are these kinds of jobs? I'm not sure where one starts. Also, how do you hop from a BS to an MS in a different subject?

• Stopping at my Front-End abilities... good career move?

  Just curious about what other front-end and back-end people think, career wise. Here's the details: I'm a 30 yr old mom who is pretty good at front end development - that's my day job at an interactive agency. Don't have the money or time to go back to school or lots of high priced training sessions. I started out as a graphic designer ten years ago or so, then moved into database-backed web stuff, like CMS. I'm great at transforming PSD to a working html and css structure, especially for Wordpress themes. I enjoy this part of the process, probably because it's easy and fun, and as I learn a little more about jQuery and PHP, I can make it even better if I want or need. I'm not sure where I should stop though, as far as my career goes. I don't know that I'll ever get to the point that I'm a great PHP developer or jQuery master. Is it lame to just be a front-end designer/developer? Can that be a successful career all its own? Or, should I obligate myself to learning the harder programming, if I'm capable? Any advice or points any of you may have is appreciated!

• Booking form works but does not give feedback

  I have a form where people can book seats for a given event. It's actually a WordPress plugin. When someone sends his booking, email notifications are sent properly and the event booking status is updated accordingly. The issue is that the booking form does not give any feedback whatsoever. Once you hit "book now", the graphic keeps loading and no feedback is ever displayed like for instance "booking sent successfully" or "there are errors in your form", even though the booking is saved correctly with both sides notified by email. I guess it's a JavaScript issue,Firebug console is not showing any error... • Advice on Factory Method

  Using php 5.2, I'm trying to use a factory to return a service to the controller. My request uri would be of the format www.mydomain.com/service/method/param1/param2/etc. My controller would then call a service factory using the token sent in the uri. From what I've seen, there are two main routes I could go with my factory. So, this seems to be an ok approach (please give suggestions if it is not) for a small amount of services. But what about when, over time and my site grows, I end up with 100s of possibilities. This no longer seems like a good approach. Am I just way off to begin with or is there another design pattern that would be a better fit? Thanks. UPDATE: @JSprang - the token is actually sent in the uri like mydomain.com/location would want a service specific to loction and mydomain.com/news would want a service specific to news. Now, for a lot of these, the service will be generic. For instance, a lot of pages will call a StaticTemplatePageService in which the token is passed in to the service. That service in turn will grab the "location" template or "links" template and just spit it back out. Some will need DynamicTemplatePageService in which the token gets passed in, like "news" and that service will grab a NewsDomainObject, determine how to present it and spit that back out. Others, like "user" will be specific to a UserService in which it will have methods like Login, Logout, etc. So basically, the token will be used to determine which service is needed AND if it is generic service, that token will be passed to that service. Maybe token isn't the correct terminology but I hope you get the purpose. I wanted to use the factory so I can easily swap out which Service I need in case my needs change. I just worry that after the site grows larger (both pages and functionality) that the factory will become rather bloated. But I'm starting to feel like I just can't get away from storing the mappings in an array (like Stephen's solution). That just doesn't feel OOP to me and I was hoping to find something more elegant.

• Give Markup support for Custom server control with public PlaceHolders properties

  I have a custom server control with two public PlaceHolder properties exposed to outside. I can use this control in a page like this: <cc1:MyControl ID="MyControl1" runat="server"> <TitleTemplate> Title text and anything else </TitleTemplate> <ContentTemplate> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> <asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Button" /> </ContentTemplate> </cc1:MyControl> TitleTemplate and ContentTemplate are properties of type asp.net PlaceHolder class. Everything works fine. The control gets any content given to these custom properties and produces a custom HTML output around them. If I want a Button1_Click event handler, I can attach the event handler in Page_Load like the following code. This happens only for child controls inside my custom control. I can programatically access child control correctly. Only problem is with event handler assignment from Markup. When I select the child Button in markup, the properties window only detects it as a < BUTTON. Not System.Web.UI.Controls.Button. It also doesn't display the "Events" tab. How can I give markup support for this scenario? Here's code for MyControl class if needed. And remember, I'm not using any ITemplate types for this. • Working with friends. Poor career choice?

  Hi all, Hope you can help me solve somewhat of a moral dilemma. Some time ago, after just a few years of living in U.S. and having to take any job I could get my hands on a friend of mine submitted recommended me for an open position at the company that he was working for. I could have not been happier. I do not have a degree of any sort, however, by being passionate about CS and with constant drive for self education I've became a somewhat of a strong generalist. Every place I worked for recognized me for that quality and used me on various projects where set of technology in hand had no overlap with set of knowledge of the team members. Rapidly I've advanced to Sr. Programmer position and the trend of me following a friend from one place to another have started and continued on for a few years. My friend's goal always been to become an IT Director, mine is to become the best programmer I can be. To my knowledge I've accommodated his goals as much as I could by taking a back seat, and letting him take the lead. Fast forward to today. He's a manager, and I am on his team. I am unhappy and I in considerable amount of suffering. I am not being utilized to my potential, it's almost exact opposite, I am being micromanaged to an unhealthy extent, my decisions, and suggestions are constantly met with negative connotation. Last week I had to hear about how my friend is a better programmer than I am. My ego was ecstatic about this one /s. In addition to that working in the field of BI have exhausted itself for most parts. The only pleasure of my work is being derived from making everything as dynamic and parameter driven as possible. This is the only area where a friend of mine does not feel competent enough to actually micromanage. Because of my situation I feel a fair amount of guilt and ever growing resentment. I need your advice, maybe you've dealt with this expression of ego before, needs of self vs the needs of your friend. Is working with a friend a poor choice? Thank you for reading in.

I believe it's better to focus on one thing, master it and build up a portfolio to enhance my resume. Bachelor's Degree with no experience, no portfolio won't do me any good. It won't get me a job by itself. I need to have something that will greatly boost my resume. What would it be? iPhone development? ASP.NET web development? Facebook development? Or completely something else that I haven't listed? I understand it's natural for silverlight developers to say "Learn Silverlight", and iPhone developers say "Learn iPhone SDK and Objective-C". So please try to give a constructive, non-biased, non-objective opinion on which technology should I focus on. Please don't close the topic for "subjective/argumentative" reasons. I am just looking for some guidance.

• I'm graduating with a Computer Science degree but I don't feel like I know how to program.

  I'm graduating with a Computer Science degree but I see websites like Stackoverflow and search engines like Google and don't know where I'd even begin to write something like that. During one summer I worked as a iPhone developer, but I felt like I was mostly gluing together libraries that other people had written with little understanding of what's happening underneath the hood. I'm trying to improve my knowledge by studying algorithms, but it is a long and painful process. I find algorithms difficult and at the rate I am working through my book it will a decade will have passed before I will finish. Given my current situation, I've spent a month looking for work but my skills (C, Python, Objective-C) are not so desirable in the local market, where C#, Java, and web development are much higher in demand. My GPA is ok (3.0) but it's not high enough to apply to the large companies or return for graduate studies and I don't have a good network of friends. Basically I'm graduating with a Computer Science degree but I don't feel like I know how to program. I thought that joining a company and programming full-time would give me a chance to develop my skills and learn from those more experienced than myself, but I'm struggling to find work and am starting to get really frustrated. I am going to cast my net wider and look beyond the city I've grown up in, but what have other people in similar situation tried to do?

• Getting moved out of a development job

  I'm a year out of college and I started my first dev job at a small (<15 people) company several months ago. It was an internship position that recently turned full time. The position started out as development but for full time I got offered a grab bag of positions: qa, docs, call support and some dev work. It's clear that my employers feel I am lacking dev skills, which is true. I did not major in CS in college and did not have much dev experience. However, I'm convinced that I can be a good developer and I will be a good developer once given the chance to write lots of code. My question is simple: what should I do? As I see it, there are two options. Work hard in the non-dev duties so that my employers may eventually give me significant dev responsibilities. Look for a new job where I will be a developer first and an all purpose guy second (if at all). Thanks guys.
