  • What is wrong with those crontabs?

    I want my projectors to Power On before the mall opens, and Power Off when the mall closes. So I created crontab entries (that I placed in /etc/cron.d/mall), but today (Thu Nov 22 18:58:29 EST 2012 is the current date on that server), the power-off.sh script got executed at 17:20 (see syslog excerpt below). Being Thu, Nov. 22, I would have expected the power-off.sh script to be executed at 21:20, per the 4th crontab line below. Why did power-off.sh execute at 17:20? What is wrong with my crontab entries?   • How to disable Power off/Power on sound on Android phone? [closed]

    My Android phone (Android v.2.1) produces loud sound both before Power off and after Power on (boot) is being completed. I don't want to turn the sound off before reboot/powering it off and to turn sound on after reboot every time I'm restarting my phone. I just want to get rid of these sounds forever :-) How can I do this (maybe executing some script, changing some properties... preferably without rooting my phone)? Update: Thank you Christopher Orr! I've also found some information that partially allows to achieve what I'm looking for (on androidforums.com): "if you are going into SettingsSound & displayNotification ringtone that sets your notification tone for app updates, power on (rebooting) etc. If you want to change notification for messages you would have to go into messaging and then hit the menu key for notification option. You can do the same for email accounts as well." So I disabled Power on/off sounds (plus something else... but I didn't notice undesired side effect yet...) with built-in settings.

  • Laptop Charger Not Recognised Properly on Samsung NP900X3F

    Firstly thanks for your time. Secondly, having an issue with my power charger on my Samsung Series 9 NP900X3F. When I boot into Ubuntu with the charger plugged in it recognises it as charging. When I unplug the charger after this it is still says it is charging. If I suspend in Ubuntu then plug/unplug during this suspended state it recognises it, but not during normal running. If I knew a little more I'm sure I could grab logs and find out what the difference between wake on suspend and normal running is, but alas I need help! I also am having issues with my keyboard backlight via the fn keys, but that I care about far less. Thank you very much.   • screen does not wake up after suspend/ brightness will not adjust

    My computer is one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230467 Asus Zenbook UX32A-DB51 Just bought it yesterday. Set to "suspend" when I close the lid, but when I open it up again I just get a black screen. Pressing the power button doesn't work, not does clicking the mouse or any key combination. The same is true if I leave the computer until it suspends. Black screen, no response, have to reboot. I also can't seem to adjust the brightness. I put "brightness up" and "brightness down" function keys in, and when I push them it shows the brightness level as going up and down on the meter, but the screen does not actually become more or less bright. I am totally new to all of this. Please tell me what additional information you need to help me and where I can find it. Thanks! Edit: Tried the following: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Change the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" into GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux" sudo update-grub Restart your linux And "acpi_backlight=vendor" both to no avail.

  • Why does 12.04 try but fail to hibernate, even after I enabled hibernation?

    Regarding the below (-----) info from another post, my system will try (as is said below) to hibernate, but it won't get all the way there. Hard drive activity stops, but it does not shut down. If I turn the power off, then back on, it will start, but I have to "restore previous session" in the browser and other open apps don't restart, with the accompanying hassle. So because it tries, will the suggested fix then cause it to work correctly, or is the literal "try" not really what he means?!? PLEASE NOTE - this is a desktop system, not a laptop. Before enabling hibernation, please try to test whether it works correctly by running pm-hibernate in a terminal. The system will try to hibernate. If you are able to start the system again then you are more or less safe to add an override. To do so, start editing sudo nano /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla Fill it with this [Re-enable hibernate by default] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate ResultActive=yes Save by pressing Ctrl-O and exit nano by pressing Ctrl-X Restart and hibernation is back!

    The installer is not working for my ATI mobility Radeon HD 3670 on Dell XPS Studio 16 using Windows 8 PRO 64 bits. Here are the screenshots of my ATI Radeon configuration: Hardware configuration Software configuration And here is the problem on Windows 8: everytime I disconnect the AC power cord, atibtmon.exe throws a runtime error as follows What could I do to avoid this error? I have installed the legacy driver http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/catalystlegacywin8.aspx but this installer fails (when trying to install the driver).

  • Xfce power manager warns HAL daemon is not running, no keyboard on startup on Ubuntu

    I changed my grub boot options to add "vga=0x323" to them to resolve some issues with corrupted display during startup/shutdown on my laptop. The next time I booted the system up, I got a warning over the login screen saying Xfce Power Manager HAL Daemon not running The keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. After a minute or so, they start to work and the system functions as normal. How can I solve this?

  • Partition is gone after power failure

    Just had a power failure and am just going through my 4 usbdisks to remount them and found that 1 (the most important one) is coming back as 'doesn't contain a valid partition table'. What can I do to try to repair the disk and hopefully retrieve the partition? Lukily I do nightly backups. but would like to get what was there today if possible.

    I've edited a pps file which was made with the 2003 version and saved also as compatible with Power Point 97-2003 but a friend a mine can't see the last version of the file. The original file can be seen by my computer friend. What can I do to make the new version of the pps file to be viewable on the computer of my friend? Any tips? Where/what else do I have to check/do ?

    (in the office) Today, the UPS battery replace warning light lit up and there was a slight panic as the all the technical people will not be around the next few days. But after thinking a bit further, I realise that in case of power failure, no client computers will be able to turn on in the first place and operations will be disrupted regardless of whether the UPS keeps the server up. This makes me wonder if the UPS is really such a critical component? What do you think?

  • HP does not power off after shutdown (Vista)

    My HP d330 does not properly shutdown, after Vista "shutting down" message the lcd screen goes black, but both HD + Power Leds remain on.. Any ideas? No entries in EventViewer about this. Keyboard leds no more work after this partial shutdown so I assume hardware is partially shutdown..? Same problem occurs when I choose Sleep from shutdown menu

  • How can I improve the battery life under 12.04 on my Inspiron 14z? [duplicate]

    This question already has an answer here: Tips to extend battery life for laptops and notebooks 24 answers How do I improve the battery life of my Inspiron 14z under Ubuntu 12.04? This laptop gets 4-5 hours of battery life using Windows (e.g. here). I've removed Windows, installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the initial battery life was only 2 hours. With some tweaks (described below) it's still only ~2.5 hours. For reference, the laptop is the latest model of the 14z: i5-3337U processor 32GB MSATA, 500GB HDD (5400rpm) AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics card I have put ext4 partitions on both the SSD and the HDD, and have mounted / to the SSD and /home to the HDD. I also put a 24gb linux swap partition at the start of the HDD, though I figure this won't be used all that much (the laptop has 8gb of RAM). After googling around and reading Ask Ubuntu and other sites extensively, I have done the following steps, and they have improved the battery life ~30 minutes (exact improvement not clear, but battery life is still nowhere near 4-5 hours). Installed Jupiter (and set Performance to "Power Saving") Installed laptop-mode-tools cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode now outputs 5 (previously it output 0) But it's not clear that this will help: AskUbuntu question Turned down the brightness of my screen from full to 1/3 Other things I have heard about but have not tried for fear of frying the laptop or my linux install: Add "pcie_aspm=force" at the end of the line with "quiet splash" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg Enable ALPM, but it may already be enabled in 12.04? Enable i915 framebuffer compression Use a propietary driver for the graphics card? Turn off the graphics card? (what would happen if I relied on the internal Intel bridge?) Use TLP? Spin down the HDD more aggressively (howto, but I think laptop-mode-tools does this already) The only other thing I've noticed is that plastic just above the F5, F6 and F7 keys gets really hot. According to Jupiter my CPU temperature is only 69 celsius and the System Monitor shows CPU load at 7% so I don't think it's the CPU. Maybe it's the graphics card? Also, I've set up MongoDB and LAMP on the machine as well. When I run powertop MongoDB is high in the list, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to battery life because I'm not actually doing anything with MongoDB most of the time.   • 2 "P4" power connectors *AND* an 8 pin EPS connector -- all necessary?

    I recently bought an Arima SW350 motherboard. It supports 16 ddr simms as well as 2 opteron 2xx CPUs, so I imagine it may have pretty heavy power requirements... It has a 24 pin ATX power connector, 2 4 pin "P4" power connectors, and an 8 pin EPS power connector. My supermicro power supply has a 24 pin ATX connector and the EPS connector, and one P4 connector. Can I safely run this thing with only one P4 connector plugged in? Can I safely get a "hard disk to P4" adapter and use that to power the other P4 connector on the motherboard? Do I just need a new power supply? The board's documentation is pretty thin on the topic.
