  • Displaying performance data per engine subsystem

    - by liortal
Our game (Android based) traces how long it takes to do the world logic updates, and how long it takes to a render a frame to the device screen. These traces are collected every frame, and displayed at a constant interval (currently every 1 second). I've seen games where on-screen data of various engine subsystems is displayed, with the time they consume (either in text) or as horizontal colored bars. I am wondering how to implement such a feature?

  • Does use of simple shaders improve performace/battery life?

    - by Miro
I'm making OpenGL game for Android. Till now i've used only fixed function pipeline, but i'm rendering simple things. Fixed function pipeline includes a lot of stuff i don't need. So i'm thinking about implementing shaders in my game to simplify OpenGL pipeline if it can make better performance. Better performance = better battery life, unless fps is limited by software limit, not hardware power.

  • Create an ad-hoc connection that looks like a wifi connection from a router

    - by James
I have a Vizio tablet (running a modified version of Android 2.3.2) which, for some reason or another, refuses to list Windows ad-hoc wifi connections on it's wifi connection screen. It can connect to wifi networks served from a normal router, but the wireless bit of my home router is broken, so I'd like to share the internet connection through my laptop's wifi card until the new router arrives. Is it possible to create an ad-hoc network in Ubuntu that looks like a normal wireless network to my tablet?

  • Android - Transforming widgets within transformed widgets and the resulting usability issues.

    - by Ben Rose
Hello. I'm new to Android application development and I'm currently experimenting with various UI ideas. In the image below, you can see a vertically scrolling list of horizontally scrolling galleries (and also textviews as you can see). I'm also doing some matrix and camera transformations which I will come to in a minute. For the background of the list elements, I use green. Blue is the background of the galleries, and red is the background for the images. These are just for my benefit of learning. The galleries being used are extended classes where I overrode the drawChild method to perform a canvas scale operation in order for the image closest to the center (width) to be larger than the others. The list view going vertically, I overrode the drawChild method and used the camera rotations from lack of depth dimension in the canvas functionality. The items in the list are scaled down and rotated relative to their position's proximity to the center (height). I understood that scrolling and clicking would not necessarily follow along with the image transforms, but it appears as though the parent Gallery class's drawing is constrained to the original coordinates as well (see photo below). I would love to hear any insight any of you have regarding how I can change the coordinates of the galleries in what is rendered via gallery scroll and the touch responsiveness of said gallery. Images in the gallery are not same dimensions, so don't let that throw you in looking at the image below Thanks in advance! Ben link to image (could not embed) -- Update: I was using my test application UI and noticed that when I got the UI to the point of the linked image and then I touched the top portion of the next row in the list, the gallery updated to display the proper representation. So, I added a call to clearFocus() in the drawChild method and that resulted in more accurate drawing. It does seem a tad slower, and since I'm on the Incredible, I'm worried it is a bloated solution. In any event, I would still appreciate any thoughts you have regarding the best way to have the views display properly and how to translate the touch events in the gallery's new displayed area to its touchable coordinates so that scrolling on the actual images works when the gallery has moved. Thanks!

  • Cloud service and IM protocol advice, for a backend to group chat mobile app

    - by Jonathan
Overview I’m going to develop an app on Android and iOS. It will allow users to set up group ‘chat rooms’ and talk on chat rooms set up by other users. The service needs to be highly scalable, such that it could accommodate a massive increase in users overnight (we can only dream). Chat requirements The chat protocol used should be flexible: it should allow me to determine who can view/post on ‘chat rooms’ based on certain other factors, as determined by the first poster/creator of the particular ‘chat room’. It should also allow for users to simply install the app and begin using the service, after only providing a simple nickname (which could be changed later). Chat protocol plans Having looked around I think the XMPP protocol is the best candidate. In particular the Multi-user chat extension looks like what I’ll need. Would this be most suited to my requirements, or do you know another potential solution? Cloud service I have been deciding between Amazon Web Services, Google App Engine and Windows Azure. I’m coming to the conclusion that Azure will be best, as it is easier to manage than AWS (ease of scalability will be a key factor in the design), I think it may be less restricted than GAE, plus Azure will soon have toolkits to allow easy interfacing with both Android and iOS phones. Is this the decision you would have made, or would you recommend/look into other cloud services? General project philosophy I have only recently started looking into this project’s feasibility, and am no expert on any of its aspects. So wherever possible I will leave the actual implementations to experts, i.e. choosing a higher-level cloud service, using a well-documented plugin of a, proven reliable, group chat protocol etc. My background I have some programming knowledge from a computer science degree. Main languages I’ve used have been Java and Python, but I don’t want this to affect design decisions for the project. The most appropriate languages for the task should be used, i.e. I don’t mind learning a lot of new skills (my current programming levels are relatively basic anyway). Thank you Thanks for reading, and any advice you have about any aspect would be greatly appreciated :-)

  • Is the STL efficient enough for mobile devices?

    - by mx2
When it comes to mobile game development on iOS and Android NDK, some developers write their own C++ containers, while others claim that STL is more than adequate for mobile game development (For example, the author of iPhone 3D Programming uses STL rather than Objective-C in his examples. His defense is that STL is no slower than Objective-C). Then there are also mobile developers who abandon C++ entirely and develop games entirely (or mostly) in the C language (C89/C90). What are the benefits and drawbacks of each approach?

  • Can't get multiple panel plots with chartSeries function from quantod package in R

    - by Milktrader
Jeff Ryan's quantmod package is an excellent contribution to the R finance world. I like to use chartSeries() function, but when I try to get it to display multiple panes simultaneously, it doesn't work. par(mfrow=c(2,2)) chartSeries (SPX) chartSeries (SPX, subset="2010") chartSeries (NDX) chartSeries (NDX, subset="2010") would normally return a four-panel graphic as it does with the plot() function but in the chartSeries example it runs through all instances one at a time without creating a single four-panel graphic.

  • work benefits package [closed]

    - by Francisco Garcia
For those of you who are into programming not just for the money. I would like to know which benefits you would like to have (or already have). OK, maybe taking away the money factor will limit this question too much. I am surprised to see that most companies have a fixed set for their benefits package. Were you able to negotiate something new or just your salary? What things have you seen out there and/or value most?

  • Package to compare LSA, TFIDF, Cosine metrics and Language Models

    - by gouwsmeister
Hi, I'm looking for a package (any language, really) that I can use on a corpus of 50 documents to perform interdocument similarity testing in various metrics, like tfidf, okapi, language models, lsa, etc. I want as a result a document similarity matrix, i.e. doc1 is x% similar to doc2, etc... This is for research purposes, not for production. I specifically want the doc similarity matrix as I want to correlate this with human ratings. Thank you in advance!

  • Supress title of listings created with the LaTeX listings package

    - by t6d
I'm using LaTeX in conjunction with the listings package and I'm trying to suppress the title of a listing such that it is neither viewed below the actual listing nor in the list of listings. Setting the option title to title="" or title= does not work. It only leads to the suppression of the listing in the list of listings. However, in the first case "" is displayed below the listing and in the latter one Listing: is displayed below the listing. Is there a way to fix this?

  • Log4j show package name

    - by Stephane Grenier
Right now for my ConversionPattern I have: log4j.appender.A1.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{yyyy MMM dd HH:mm:ss,SSS} %5p [%t] (%F:%L) - %m%n What I'd like to do is also include the full package name with the class (%F:%L) but I can't find any config to do so in the docs. I do understand that this will be slower, but it's only for debugging and not when the system will be in production.
