• Starting work with SVN and basic folder structure.

  I have read little about TortoiseSVN and it capabilities, but I just can't understand how should I use basic structure. /trunk /branches /tags I have created FSFS type repo and I have imported basic structure. NB! No checkouts yet. I also have my project files in another place. How should I continue my work from here? Should I checkout repository-place all files in trunk folder-add them-commit them-then create tag for current trunk state-create branche for my goal I'm tring to achive-switch to created branch and work there? By the way my repo is local and whole work too. I thank everyone for help.

• Unnamed/anonymous namespaces vs. static functions

  A little-used feature of C++ is the ability to create anonymous namespaces, like so: namespace { int cannotAccessOutsideThisFile() { ... } } // namespace You would think that such a feature would be useless -- since you can't specify the name of the namespace, it's impossible to access anything within it from outside. But these unnamed namespaces are accessible within the file they're created in, as if you had an implicit using-clause to them. My question is, why or when would this be preferable to using static functions? Or are they essentially two ways of doing the exact same thing?

• How do I control Google Search Results display properties?

  I am putting the finishing touches on a customized Google Search for a site and need a little assistance tweaking the header on the results page. I was able to manage the spacing of the results content with: #results4 { width: 620px; padding: 20px; } However you will notice that the top row of information Results 1 - 10 for search... runs off the right side of the content area. I tried using the following code, but it didn't help: .t td { align:left; } I also tried margin-right and padding but those didn't work either. what is the best way to get that content to move over into the content area? thanks.

• Diamonds with question marks

  Hi, I'm getting these little diamonds with question marks in them in my HTML attributes when I present data from my database. I'm using EPiServer and a few custom properties. This is the information I've gathered, I save my data as a XML document, since I use custom EPiServer properties which need more than one defined value. This is saved as UTF8. It's only attributes in element tags which have this problem, such as align=left becomes align=?left?. There is no " character there, but I get the diamonds anyway. If I use " outside an element, it works and shows correctly. Any clues?

• Sql Server 2000 Stored Procedure Prevent Parallelism or something?

  I have a huge disgusting stored procedure that wasn't slow a couple months ago, but now is. I barely know what this thing does and I am in no way interested in rewriting it. I do know that if I take the body of the stored procedure and then declare/set the values of the parameters and run it in query analyzer that it runs more than 20x faster. From the internet, I've read that this is probably due to a bad cached query plan. So, I've tried running the sp with "WITH RECOMPILE" after the EXEC and I've also tried putting the "WITH RECOMPLE" inside the sp, but neither of those helped even a little bit. When I look at the execution plan of the sp vs the query, the biggest difference is that the sp has "Parallelism" operations all over the place and the query doesn't have any. Can this be the cause of the difference in speeds? Thank you, any ideas would be great... I'm stuck.

  Guys I am a little bit stuck here. So here it goes. I am using json to get latitude and longitude for a map project. I use these values to add some pins on the map. I also created a detail view for the pins. Here comes the tricky part. I want to load some images from my db to the detail view but I don't know how to tell the pins appart so the right image goes to the right pin. Thanks in advance

• Document -> Flash viewer, not hosted

  I've got a content management solution where we present scanned images (TIFF), PDFs, word docs for viewing. While we can simply embed a PDF, sometimes depending on user preferences it's a bit fiddly and sometimes not user-intuitive. I'd like a solution like scribd, embedit, etc, but not hosted. I want to run the application on our own servers and manage it that way (for legal reasons, and our clients won't buy the service if it's hosted somewhere else). SWFtools looks a little basic for my needs, plus doesn't do doc, docx or ppt. Any options? Doesn't have to be free, but would be ideal.

• Test for undefined references in Linux

  Is there a built in linux utility that I can use to test a newly compiled shared library for external undefined references? Gcc seems to be intelligent enough to check for undefined symbols in my own binary, but if the symbol is a reference to another library gcc does not check at link time. Instead I only get the message when I try to link to my new library from another program. It seems a little silly to get undefined reference messages in a library when I am compiling a different project so I want to know if I can do a check on all references internal and external when I build the library not when I link to it. I know I can do it with nested foreach loops, but I was looking for something a little more readable. I was imagining something like a modified Any() extension method: IEnumerable<Transaction> transactions = ... if (transactions.AnyPair( (first, second) => first.UniqueID == second.UniqueID)) throw ...   As are are different binary representation of the numbers (for example, take big/little endian), is this cross-platform: some_unsigned_type variable = some_number; // set n-th bit, starting from 1, // right-to-left (least significant-to most significant) variable |= ( 1 << ( n - 1 ) ); // clear the same bit: variable &= ~( 1 << ( n - 1 ) ); In other words, does the compiler always take care of the different binary representation of the unsigned numbers, or it's platform-specific? And what if variable is signed integral type (for example, int) and its value is zero positive negative? What does the Standard say about this? P.S. And, yes, I'm interesting in both - C and C++, please don't tell me they are different languages, because I know this :) I can paste real example, if needed, but the post will become too long

• Tracing or Logging Resource Governor classification function behavior in Sql Server 2008

  I'm trying to use the Resource Governor in SQL Server 2008 but I find it hard to debug the classification function and figure out what the input variables will have, i.e. does SUSER_NAME() contain the domain name? What does the APP_NAME() string look like? It's also hard to verify that it's working correctly. What group did the function return? The only way I can see this is to fire up the performance monitor and watch unblinkingly for little blips in the right CPU counter. Is there some way I can either run it in Debug mode, where I can set a breakpoint and step through and look at variable values, or can I at least do the old-school method of writing trace statements to a file so I can see what's going on? Thanks...

• Set Caret position with JTextArea in JScrollPane

  Right now I have a JTextArea inside of a JScrollPane. For the current content it has both a vertical and horizontal scroll bar showing up. I'm trying to implement a search functionality where a user can search for a certain string and it will set the caret position to the first occurrence of that string. However it seems that JScrollPane only scrolls vertically when I set my caret position. So matching strings going off the JTextArea horizontally will completely get missed and the horizontal scroll bar won't scroll at all. I'm using the basic function setCaretPosition() for the JTextArea Does anybody have any idea why my JScrollPane isn't moving horizontally using setCaretPosition() Edit: It appears the horizontal scroll bar is scrolling but it moves so little that it's barely noticeable. I can only see the very first pixel of the character. Is there a way to have the scrollbar center (or as much as possible) to the caret position?

  Hey guys, When using the Facebook Connect AS API, the user will be prompted to log in to FB in a pop up window. At this point I want to block interaction in my flash movie and wait for them to complete logging in (or potentially close/cancel and not log in). I have seen examples where people put up a Flex "Alert" box with some hint like "Press ok once you have logged into facebook", but I want to automatically listen for them logging in or canceling/closing the popup window without logging in. Is there an event I can listen for with flash? So far I am using ZERO javascript, but I guess I could add a little if it is needed for this... I definitely want to avoid having some sort of "Press OK" alert box, but instead have the flash application automatically react to the user logging in with the popup window.

• Loss of precision - int -> float or double

  I have an exam question i am revising for and the question is for 4 marks "In java we can assign a int to a double or a float". Will this ever loose infromation and why? I have put that because ints are normally of fixed length or size - the precision for sotring data is finite, where storing information in floating point can be infinite, essentially we loose infromation because of this Now i am a little sketchy as to whetehr or not i am hitting the right areas here. I very sure it will loose precision but i cant exactly put my finger on why. Can i getsome help please Thanks

• .NET Web Service Proxy is adding special characters in XML

  My web service proxy seems to be adding special characters like "*" and "#" etc. within the xml nodes. My proxy created lists using arrays of objects. I am trying to create a generic list and then doing list.ToArray() to set the proxy MyProxyObject[] object. Is this the cause of the problem I am having? I plan on running fiddler on the request later but it is over SSL and I do not have access to the URL at the moment. • Why are functional languages considered a boon for multi threaded environments?

  I hear a lot about functional languages, and how they scale well because there is no state around a function; and therefore that function can be massively parallelized. However, this makes little sense to me because almost all real-world practical programs need/have state to take care of. I also find it interesting that most major scaling libraries, i.e. MapReduce, are typically written in imperative languages like C or C++. I'd like to hear from the functional camp where this hype I'm hearing is coming from....

• Creating a Java platform game as easily as possible

  I need to create a Java-based platformer game for a high school project (not computer science related), and I want to spend as little time on technical stuff as possible. I'm already experienced in Java, and I already have most of the gameplay, graphics, etc. All I need to do is code it. I've looked and I'm considering one of two options that do not involving coding a game from scratch: Copy an existing Java platformer (best option, but I can't find an open source Java platformer) Use a Java game engine to avoid coding from scratch. I've looked at JGame but I'm not sure if it's the best bet for a platformer.

• Java - Need help with binary/code string manipulation

  For a project, I have to convert a binary string into (an array of) bytes and write it out to a file in binary. Say that I have a sentence converted into a code string using a huffman encoding. For example, if the sentence was: "hello" h = 00 e = 01, l = 10, o = 11 Then the string representation would be 0001101011. How would I convert that into a byte? <-- If that question doesn't make sense it's because I know little about bits/byte bitwise shifting and all that has to do with manipulating 1's and 0's.

• Sorting top votes in a timeframe using "Vote it up" and wordpress

  I'm building a digg-like voting site for christmas greetings. I'm using wordpress and the "Vote it up" plugin. I am having alot of troubles being able to sort the vop votes within a timeframe. You can see what I mean on this site; http://wordtaps.com/ Look at the timeframe on the top right, that's exactly what I want. The site also uses the "Vote it up" plugin along with wordpress. There are a couple of fuctions on the "vote it up" plugin page which I assume would work, but I just keep on getting errors when I try to use them as I know very little php. • Manipulating Exchange 2003 shared contacts folder remotely

  I've got a CRM web app running on a remote server that needs to synchronise it's contacts with the in-house Exchange 2003 shared contacts. I know very little about Exchange - we are pricing a job for a new client so I'm really just getting a sense of the scope at this stage. Exchange 2003 doesn't seem to support web-services. What would the typical approach to this problem be? My initial instinct would be to open port 80 in the Exchange server, run a simple webserver and POST to it and then talk to exchange via OLE automation scripting (if that's what people are still calling it!) Any other suggestions?
