  • installing a linux iso from within a university network

    In order to install gentoo, I need to connect to a university wireless internet network. It requires a username and password login/authentication. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice in terms of how to configure the internet connection. The Gentoo installation documentation recommends the use of net-setup, pppoe, pptp, dhcp and iwconfig. I can't figure out how to configure this connection, as the only way I understand is to select the network from a list and enter in authentication data from within a browser.

  • Postfix / Dovecot and Email Retrieval

    I have setup Postfix and Dovecot on an Ubuntu box following the instructions http://www.exratione.com/2012/05/a-mailserver-on-ubuntu-1204-postfix-dovecot-mysql/ I can see that email is being delivered to and accepted by the server, but the email is not available for retrieval via POP3. What could be missing in my configuraton? It seems that email is not being properly handed off to Dovecot.   • Hybrid gmail MX + postfix for local accounts

    Here's the setup: We have a domain, mydomain.com. Everything is on our own server, except general email accounts which are through gmail. Currently gmail is set as the MX record. The server also has various email aliases it needs to support for bug trackers and such. e.g. [email protected] |/path/to/issuetracker.script I'm struggling with a setup that allows the following, both locally and from user's email clients. guser1 - has a gmail account and a local account guser2 - only has a gmail account bugs - has a pipe alias in /etc/aliases for issue tracker Scenarios mail to [email protected] from local host (crons and such) needs to go to gmail account mail to [email protected] from local host mail to [email protected] needs to be piped to the local issue tracker script So, the first stab was creating a transport map. In this scenario, the our server would be set as teh MX and guser* destined emails are sent to gmail. Put the gmail users in a map like so: [email protected] smtp:gmailsmtp:25 [email protected] smtp:gmailsmtp:25 Problems: Ignores extensions such as [email protected] Only works if append_at_myorigin = no (if set to yes, gmail refuses to connect with: E4C7E3E09BA3: to=, relay=none, delay=0.05, delays=0.02/0.01/0.02/0, dsn=4.4.1, status=deferred (connect to gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com[209.85.222.57]:25: Connection refused)) since append_at_myorigin is set to no, all received emails have (unknown sender) The second stab was to set explicit localhost aliases in /etc/aliases and do a domain wide forward on mydomain. This too requires setting the local server as the MX: root: root@localhost # transport mydomain.com smtp:gmailsmtp:25 Problems: * If I create a transport map for a domain that matches "$myhostname", the aliases file is never parsed. So when a local user (or daemon) sends an email like: mail -s "testing" root < text.txt Postfix ignores the /etc/alias entry and maps to [email protected] and attempts to send it to the gmail transport mapping. Third stab: Create a subdomain for the bugs, something like bugs.mydomain.com. Set the MX for this domain to local server and leave the MX for mydomain.com to the Gmail server. Problems: * Does not solve the issue with local accounts.     I just heard about policyd-weight so I did an apt-cache search policyd which returns three options: policyd-weight postfix-policyd postfwd Which one is the best, and do you have any tips on setting them up? Our current setup is whitelister plus postgrey to greylist RBLd hosts, then fail2ban them for 10 minutes if they have 10 failures, followed by content filtering (Kaspersky Anti-Spam). The content filtering is pretty good, but there's still a lot of spam that gets through the RBL greylisting.

    Hi! I have setup a Centos 5.5 server and a domain name (say mydomain.com) pointing to it (using bind9) with custom nameservers (like ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com). Everything works fine but there is something more I would like to have and don't know if it is possible. Is it possible to have the returned host to be mydomain.com (PHP gethostbyaddr()), not host-static-x-y-a-b.myisp-provider.com? And how do I implement it if it's possible?

  • Can I enable discards on a LUKS-encrypted ssd drive in RHEL6 (and do I need to)?

    I have a RHEL 6.4 workstation, running on a LUKS-encrypted LV residing on a SSD. I found RedHat documentation stating that dm_crypt does not currently support TRIM passthrough, however I also found other sources that state the opposite (albeit for other distributions) and even that discards are not needed for recent SSD drives which use some sort of automatic garbage collection. So: 1) Can I enable TRIM/discards with my setup? 2) Do I need to, for optimal disk performance? Thanks for your thoughts.

  • Anyone know of a command-line torrent client to run on a server?

My ideal setup to keep my credits going would be some kind of media box that keeps and manages my music and videos etc. Ideally, I'd like this to be a headless box that I could just telnet into and have it run torrents that way.   • Can I sync my Tomboy notes from Windows through Ubuntu One?

    I have setup my Ubuntu machine to synchronize Tomboy notes with the Ubuntu One service. I'm now trying Tomboy on Windows and it would be great to have it sync with Ubuntu One. However, while Tomboy for Ubuntu does expose a 'Ubuntu One' service for synchronization, version 1.2.0 of Tomboy for Windows does not. I can, however, use a "Tomboy Web" service. Does Ubuntu One behave as a Tomboy Web service and how would I configure it to do so?

    i have setup an exchange 2010 account on microsoft outlook 2010 and i can read my emails, but i am not able to send emails, when i create a new email and click send, the messages are not sent, they don't even get to the outbox folder. my guess is that the issue is not from exchange itself, becuase i can send emails with this exchange account with java code using smtp port 25 please advise how to fix this issue.
