• Suggested C++ books?

  Ok, I've had one semester of C++ and will be taking a second semester in it after I have taken a Data Structure class this fall. In the first class, we dealt mainly with C++ syntax and the textbook we used was ok, but now I'm wanting to go ahead and purchase a great C++ book that encompasses a lot of the programming concepts used today. I'm learning Objective-C on my own and was able to get through the whole object-oriented stuff pretty easily, along with other things like pointers, inheritance, delegation, etc. It doesn't have to exactly have EVERYTHING in it, but I do want to buy the book with the most information in it. Money is no problem. So my question is what book did you use or still use for C++? Is it a book that you can reference back to if you ever forget how to do something small, or would you have to go online and find the answer.

• Starting with an empty dataProvider for a <List>

  I'm using a List which I need to be empty at the start. I'm adding items to it as needed by clicking a button. Since it's empty, I haven't added a dataProvider property <s:List id="thelist" itemRenderer="listIR" /> To add an item, I'm adding it to the dataProvider directly thelist.dataProvider.addItem() but when I do that, it gives me this error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. Also I have a debugging Alert in the listIR itemRenderer itself and I see that when the list is created, I get that alert twice as if 2 itemRenderers were created, even though the list is supposed to be empty at the start. Any ideas what's wrong with this itemRenderer? How do I start with an empty dataProvider and add items smoothly to it?

• Anonymous method as function result

  What I want to do is to assign an anonymous method which I get as a function result to a variable of the same type. Delphi complains about not beeing able to do the assignement. Obviously Delphi things I want to assign the "GetListener" function instead of the result of that same function. • how to copy char * into a string and vice-versa

  If i pass a char * into a function. I want to then take that char * convert it to a std::string and once I get my result convert it back to char * from a std::string to show the result. I don't know how to do this for conversion ( I am not talking const char * but just char *) I am not sure how to manipulate the value of the pointer I send in. so steps i need to do take in a char * convert it into a string. take the result of that string and put it back in the form of a char * return the result such that the value should be available outside the function and not get destroyed. If possible can i see how it could be done via reference vs a pointer (whose address I pass in by value however I can still modify the value that pointer is pointing to. so even though the copy of the pointer address in the function gets destroyed i still see the changed value outside. thanks!

• Maven workspace resolution horked

  I'm using m2eclipse to manage maven projects. Somehow I did a bad thing, and now the system is behaving as if workspace resolution is disabled. I have several projects that depend on a main project. This project has a version of 4.0-SNAPSHOT, and all the dependent projects reference it in the dependencies section of their poms. Everything was working fine until I created an entirely new project and mistakenly copied the pom from the main project into the new project. Suddenly, all of the dependent projects got the error: "The container 'Maven Dependencies" references non existing library C:\users\myusername.m2\com\mydomain\myproject\4.0-SNAPSHOT\myproject-4.0-SNAPSHOT.jar I zapped the offending new project, but the error remains for all the dependent projects. I've made no changes (to my knowledge) in the main project or any of the dependent projects, so I'm guessing something got changed in the Eclipse environment. Does m2eclipse or Maven itself maintain settings anywhere that I can blow away?

• PHP - white screen of death!

  Hi everyone, After debugging a codeigniter app that were installed into a new development environment, I have started to freak out when seeing white screens with nothing more available. I have been able to solve each and every one of the errors that have caused this, but it have taken seriously way too long time. PHP error_reporting(E_ALL) & display_errors", 1 is set as well. I even installed Xdebug in hope of getting more output, but no. My logging settings are also working, but nothing is written to the log. Is there a way to get something informative printed out instead of a complete white screen? It would certainly shorten my time spent on solving the eventual errors that causes this? Thanks a lot!   I have two samples of code. One works and returns the correct result, one throws a null reference exception. What's the difference?   I want to add an overlay view for my video when the video is paused by the user. Is there any way to get the pause notification from MPMoviePlayerController? According to Apple Doc, there should be ways to do this but I can't find which notification should I use for this purpose. • Using C# to iterate form fields with same name

  I have a section of a form that I need to handle differently from the rest of form results. In the section that needs special handling I need to iterate over 3 form fields that have the same name. They have to have the same name, I can't change it. The section of the form I am referring to looks something like this: <td><input name="Color" size="20" value="" type="text"></td> Using C# I try something like this: I try to handle it like this: int i; for (i = 1; i <= Request.Form["Color"][i]; i++) { colorName.Text += Request.Form["Color"]; } Which leads to the following exception: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. How should I be handling form fields with the same name?

• Simple explaination of Arraylists

  I'm new to programming and I'm looking for a simple answer to build my foundation of understanding Arrays. I've used google and searched this site. After a bit of trial and error I get how to make and reference Arrays like thing[3] gets you the fourth thing in the thing array(since 0 is the first). which lets me do something like thing[3].getStupidNumber() to get the StupidNumber of the 4th thing in the thing array. Then I get to ArrayLists which seem to have much more utility but I cant make logical sense of them like Arrays. When i search I cant find this or word this correctly and thus far everything else I've learned clicked easily. so say I make an ArrayList thing with 5 things in it. how do i get to the .getStupidNumber() method inside the fourth thing, if possible? I think if I learn this I can learn the rest on my own. Thanks!

• What's a good way to throw and handle events in PHP?

  Hi everyone, I am just trying to get a general idea about the event prcessing mechanism in PHP5 in as neat way as possible. First of all I understand that a PHP application is not exactly a persistent type, so the events may not make a lot of sense, but from the OO perspective it might be a very elegant way to "communicate" between the objects. So I am thinking that it would make sense to separate the events on the external events, such as $_POST & $_GET and the internal ones, i.e. function callbacks. As far as the external ones, is it a good idea to process the $_GETs and $_POSTs directly, or is it better to wrap them into an event of some sort? Also, in order to process the internal events, do you have to pass the reference to the event handler/dispatcher to each class so they know how to throw them? I was thinking to use the PEAR EventDispatcher to do the work, but I am open to other suggestions. Thank you!

• Track someone's GitHub repo in a branch

  I'm pretty new to Git, and like it a lot so far, but am not sure what do do here. I've forked a github project, and am currently in the process of porting it to another language. For reference, I've created a branch of the code as it was when I made the fork. My problem now is that the original project has been updated, and I can't figure out how to pull those changes into my branch from the original master (because 'origin' points to my github project). Follow-up question for my own education, what command will the owner of the original project have to run in order to pull a change in from my branch into his master branch?

• 2 or more Controls only 1 is considered Active

  I have 2 controls (MyCtrl) next to each other called ctrlLeft and ctrlRight. Whenever one receives interaction it is considered active (by default the left one). I override OnDraw and customize the look of the active one a bit. Currently I have a property Active and an event that I subscribe to from all MyCtrl in there I store a reference to the active one like this: if (sender is MyCtrl) { ctrlActive = (sender as MyCtrl); ctrlLeft.Active = !(ctrlRight.Active = (ctrlActive == ctrlRight)); } Either way I need to have ctrlActive as I use it for other things but what I am wondering is if this is the best way make them aware of each other? Another option I thought of was to store references to every possible MyCtrl and then loop through em all and activate / deactivate the one that match sender just in case I in the future add a ctrlMiddle. Are my thoughts wrong, is there better options to do this. For example, how does radiobuttons accomplish their similar functionality?

  Does anyone know of a walk-through or any examples of any code to setup sensors in android. I have the drivers available to me. Also i have implemented the sensors library as instructed in the Android-Reference along the sensors.h template. I am still unable to get any response at the apps level. • Losing scope for DataContex using LINQToSQL intermediately

  I am having a weird Situation with my DataConext. All My code is in C# I have a DLL project for my data access layer and business Layer which and Winforms project for my UI layer. My Data access Layer's Namespace is xxx.Data this is where have my xxx.dbml I also have xxx.Data.BusinessObjects name space of course for my business object in that project In my UI Layer I have these namespaces xxxApp(for Forms), xxxApp.Controls (For Controls) I have lost scope of the DataContext, it was accessible now when I do a Rebuild Solution I sometimes get compile errors saying for example: Error 34 'xxx.Data.xxxDataContext' does not contain a definition for 'SubmitChanges' and no extension method 'SubmitChanges' accepting a first argument of type 'xxx.Data.xxxDataContext' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Also intelisense doesn't recognize the methods and table classes from my xxxDataContext anymore I can access all object fine when I am in the DLL project but now in the Winforms project this is very strange. If anyone can help me out I would be extremely grateful!

• About the String#substring() method

  If we take a look at the String#substring method implementation : new String(offset + beginIndex, endIndex - beginIndex, value); We see that a new String is created with the same original content (parameter char [] value). So the workaround is to use new String(toto.substring(...)) to drop the reference to the original char[] value and make it eligible for GC (if no more references exist). I would like to know if there is a special reason that explain this implementation. Why the method doesn't create herself the new shorter String and why she keeps the full original value instead? The other related question is : should we always use new String(...) when dealing with substring?

I have been studying the patterns by Martin Fowler, for example Accounting, but I wonder if there are other more generic. The problem is that operations apply to the items must be possible to change even at run time and may depend on other external variables. I thought of a kind of strategy pattern but would like to combine it with the fact that it is a hierarchical scheme. I would appreciate any reference to hierarchical patterns and you'll take care of them in depth.

  As long as the mouse is over a specific control, we show some form. When the mouse leaves the control, we hide the control after a small timeout. This is standard hover behavior. However, when a control (for example a Treeview) has a scrollbar, and the mouse is ON or OVER the scrollbar, the events don't fire ... If we could get a reference to the scrollbar control, this would solve our problem, as we would add the same listener events to the scrollbar. However, the scrollbar isn't accessible as far as I know ... How can we solve this problem ?

• How can I deal with the ICE60 warning in WiX?

  Good Afternoon, I have created a WiX project that installs a bunch of different EXEs and DLLs. Unfortunatly when I build the project I receive the following warning for each one of them: ICE60: The file fileName is not a Font, and its version is not a companion file reference. It should have a language specified in the Language column. I have found examples and possible solutions for this and each time it is suggested to set the DefaultLanguage tag to 0 in order to fix the warning. Once doing that I then get this warning: The DefaultLanguage '0' was used for file 'fileName' which has no language or version. For unversioned files, specifying a value for DefaultLanguage is not neccessary and it will not be used when determining file versions. Remove the DefaultLanguage attribute to eliminate this warning. So this leads me to the question of how can I handle this warning? Thanks in advance for any and all help given.

  I want to start on a side project and here's my idea: Whenever the user's mouse is pressed down, I want a small ring around the cursor to show up. I'm mainly doing this to learn more about programming and get myself to think outside of work related materials.   SQL Server is able to return the results of multiple queries in a single round-trip, e.g: select a, b, c from y; select d, e, f from z; Oracle doesn't like this syntax. It is possible to use reference cursors, like this: begin open :1 for select count(*) from a; open :2 for select count(*) from b; end; However, you incur a penalty in opening/closing cursors and you can hold database locks for an extended period. What I'd like to do is retrieve the results for these two queries in one shot, using Odp.net. Is it possible?
