• Python with PIL and Libjpeg on Leopard

  I'm having trouble getting pictures supported with PIL - it throws me this: "IOError: decoder jpeg not available" I installed PIL from binary, not realizing I needed libjpeg. I installed libjpeg and freetype2 through fink. I tried to reinstall PIL using instructions from http://timhatch.com/ (bottom of the page) "* Download PIL 1.1.6 source package and have the Developer Tools already installed * Patch setup.py with this patch so it can find the Freetype you already have. (patch -p0 < leopard_freetype2.diff) * sudo apt-get install libjpeg if you have fink (otherwise, build by hand and adjust paths)" But I'm still getting the same error. I'm on Leopard PPC.

• Creating Graphs on an iPad/iPhone

  I was wondering if anyone knew of a simple way to implement graphing in an iPhone/iPad application. I've spent quite a bit of time googling and can't seem to find any sort of a solution. Maybe I'm just searching with the wrong terms since a lot of consumers are asking about "graphing" in terms of using their applications, not developing them, the search-space is rather polluted. It seems like a lot of iPad/iPhone applications have embedded graphs... and I can't imagine that every developer has invented their own graphing engine from the ground up. Or, maybe they have... Does anyone have any suggestions?

• Is there way to find when self signed certificate will expire for Adobe Air application?

  Hi, I have to release my Adobe Air application but the build process was "setup" by a different developer. (He made a self signed cert and wrote a batch file to call adt for packaging the application). Adobe mentions that such self signed certificates are valid for 5 years. Now I have no idea when that certificate will expire as I don't know when it was created. Also will my installed application stop working on expiry or only new installations will fail ? Thanks.

• Find package name for Android apps to use Intent to launch Market app from web

  I'm creating a mobile website that will include a page from which people can download relevant apps that we recommend. I've found instructions for creating the links to launch the Market but this assumes that you are the developer of the app in question and know the exact package name. Is there any way to get the package name, other than just contacting the developers and asking? Also, it turns out that those instructions don't really work for creating web hyperlinks. They only give you a URI to reference in a string of Java code in another Android app. Our site is in Drupal, so Java is not going to work. For the iPhone, I found easy instructions for getting the URL/link style I need from the iTunes store, so I'm looking for info like that.

• Are C++ meta-templates required knowledge for programmers?

  In my experience Meta-templates are really fun (when your compilers are compliant), and can give good performance boosts, and luckily I'm surrounded by seasoned C++ programmers that also grok meta-templates, however occasionally a new developer arrives and can't make heads or tails of some of the meta-template tricks we use (mostly Andrei Alenxandrescu stuff), for a few weeks until he gets initiated appropriately. So I was wondering what's the situation for other C++ programmers out there? Should meta-template programming be something C++ programmers should be "required" to know (excluding entry level students of course), or not?   I'm trying to be a Good Developer and separate my concerns out. I've got an ASP.NET MVC project with all my web code, and a DAL project with all the model code. Sometimes code in the DAL needs to check if the current user is authorized to perform some actions, by checking something like CurrentUser.IsAdmin. For the web site, the current is derived from the Windows username (from HttpContext.Current.User.Identity), but this is clearly a web concern and shouldn't be coupled to the DAL. What's the best pattern to loosely couple the authentication? Should the DAL be asking the MVC code for a username, or the MVC be telling the DAL? Are there advantages or disadvantages to one or the other? Thank you!

  My company took some old php application over. Due to our preference to ASP.net and to the lack of any documentation from the previous developer, we do not want to spend much resources on developing in PHP. For implementing new features, we will create an Asp.net application that has the same look to the user. We want to develop a kind of 'coexisting' web application. Therefore we must share sessions between an PHP and an Asp.net webapplication project, because there is a usermanagement involved with an existing MySQL database. (e.g. link 'A' directs to the PHP website, and link 'B' directs to the asp.net application) How can we share the session between and PHP and an asp.net application? And does anyone have a hint for this 'coexisting' thing, that might be useful in development? Edit: IIS 6 would be our targeted server, altough IIS 7.5 would also be an option

• Code Profiling in the Windows Sidebar Environment

  Does anyone know of a way I can code-profile my Windows Sidebar Gadget? I've played around with the code-profiling tool in IE8's "Developer Tools" and the code-profiling included in Visual Studio 2010, but I can't find a way to include the System.* API, which my gadget relies on (as it is standard in the Sidebar environment). The gadget also relies on cross-domain AJAX requests; which is normally permitted in the Sidebar environment.   If I have a paid app on Android Market, will my merchant API callback URL get a hit when the customer goes to check out? I am wondering how merchants/vendors/developers secure their applications for android market. I have used google checkout before to implement a custom integration, so I understand how that all works. What I do not see anywhere that I have looked is what, if any, integration does the merchant/developer have with the Android Market checkout process? I understand that the market uses google checkout, but in that case the market hosts the checkout process and not the merchant, so it's not clear whether they give your URL a call. So where is the hook? Am I right in assuming it is the merchant API callback URL?

  We have library website written in classic ASP that allows to browse and search by multiple (50+) filter criterias (author, publication year, ISSN ... ). There are lots of security holes and we have only one developer who hardly maintain this ASP-site with some minor features for last 3 years. There are two common user groups - administrators (librarians) and students (5000+) who have books on hands and searches for them. We don't want to rewrite it from scratch, just to use standard free CMS (.net based) and migrate library data and user accounts with minimum effort. What CMS will you suggest? Thank you in advance.

  Do we have to explicitly manage database resources when using Spring Framework.. liking closing all open connections etc? I have read that Spring relieves developer from such boiler plate coding... This is to answer an error that I am getting in a Spring web app: org.springframework.jdbc.CannotGetJdbcConnectionException: Could not get JDBC Connection; nested exception is java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00020: maximum number of processes (150) exceeded The jdbcTemplate is configured in the xml file and the DAO implementation has reference to this jdbcTemplate bean which is used to query the database.

  I want to use MvcContrib Grid helper, but i stuck on the problem - it's not working. I downloaded release for mvc 1, i have dll on my hard drive, i added a reference to my project, but i always getting following error: 'System.Web.Mvc.HtmlHelper' does not contain a definition for 'Grid' and no extension method 'Grid' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Web.Mvc.HtmlHelper' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) • What next in the career map for a Lead QA Engineer

  I am a Lead QA Engineer in a Software company and at a stage in my career wherein i need to plan my next move. Option 1: The very obvious move would be to stay as a QA Lead and eventually become a QA Manager. But i don't see very good prospects/future after that. Or am i wrong? Option 2: I love programming/coding, though i haven't spent a whole lot of time on that. So a direct move to becoming a Software Developer is not possible. Will moving to Test Automation eventually lead me to development. Even so, am i looking at step-down in pay and career-level. Option 3: Moving to Product Management.   Hi all, When I implement OAuth in iPhone, I have a dilemma to choose Safari or UIWebView to open the Twitter pages for user authentication? I write some advantage and disadvantage of both case: Using UIWebWeb. The disadvantage is users have to enter their credentials in our application. It's maybe risky phishing. The advantage is this approach will not quit our app. Using Safari for user to authenticate (this approach automatically callbacks to our application) Addvantage: less risky. Some background: I'm interested in becoming the best programmer I can. As part of this process I'm trying to understand what I don't know and would benefit me a lot if I did. While there are loads of lists around along the lines of "n things every [insert programming language] developer should know", I have yet to find anything similar which isn't limited to a specific language.   Hi folks, With all the RDF et al around King Jobs' newest glass beermat, I'm getting the feeling that its a good time to add the 'iphone/ipad developer' string to my bow. One problem (two if you count not being in a financial position to slap down $1000+ for a mac) ; I am a PC head, specifically a Linux-head, and have no regular access to a Mac platform to develop on. I cannot see any way of getting my hands on iSDK without being on a Mac, (but have been known to be wrong) How hopeless is my plight and where can I go from here?

• HTML Chrome Audit Specify Image Dimensions

  I just started using the chrome developer tools for some basic html websites and I used the audit tool. I had two identical images, one with the height and width attribute, and one without. On the Resources section, both the latency and the download time were identical. However, the Audit showed Specify image dimensions (1) A width and height should be specified for all images in order to speed up page display. Does this actually help? And are there any other ways to speed up page time? This is only a splash page for the website I am building and as such it is only html, no css or javascript or anything. I have already compressed the images but I want to speed up load time even more. Is there a way?

• Looking for Suggestion on Multi-Consumer Service Development

  How would I model a system that needs to be able to provide content in a format that would be consumable by iphone, Android or web browser (or whatever). All a new consumer would have to do is build a UI with rules on how to handle the data. I'm thinking something RESTful returning JSON or something. I'm really looking for suggestions on the kinds of things I'd need to learn in order to be able to implement a system on this scale. • Updating a TableView with a WebService and Saving to CoreData

  I am working on a project where I have a table view that is currently updated via a web request that returns XML. I implemented -(int)numberOfRowsInTableView:(NSTableView*)tv and -(id)tableView:(NSTableView *)tv objectValueForTableColumn:(NSTableColumn*)tableColumn row:(int)row in my XML parsing class, and have the table updated with the data that is pulled down from the server. I want to save the data that is pulled down using Core Data, so that the table can be saved/loaded. Then later on application start when the web request is made, it will only add data that is not already present. (The XML is sorted by release date, so later I will check to see which release dates are not loaded up from the Core Data store, and only load newer entries.) How would I go about implementing this? I am a very new Cocoa developer, but have gone through the entire Hillegass book. Thanks so much.

  Hello, I have a trading software that gets data from the internet. I want to capture that tick data. There is one software that has been made by a local develop which is able to do that and it looks like it uses DDE (NDde.dll, NetSQL.dll). I want to write a custom application that does the same. Any pointers how I can check how the data is being streamed and how to capture that data. I don't think it is encrypted, since the other developer would not have been able to decrypt either. I just need to scan how the software is getting the data. Thank you.

• How do you handle files that can't support concurrent edits in Mercurial?

  I'm using Mercurial with TortoiseHg. Each developer has their own repositories, and there's one central repository on the server for synchronizing our changes. (This will sound lame, but we're using it to manage the source for a legacy VB6 project. Nothing we can do about that...) As has been pointed out elsewhere, there is a big problem in VB6 with merging the .frx (form resources) files. So code changes seem to merge fine, but if two developers both make changes at the same time in the form design view, we can't merge. I'm ok with disallowing concurrent edits, but of course the whole point of Mercurial is that it's distributed so there is no option to force a file to be locked before editing. I don't believe there's a Mercurial solution for this, so I'm wondering: other developers who are using Mercurial for version control, do you have some 3rd party tool that assists with locking files for editing in the cases where it's necessary? Did we make a mistake using Mercurial instead of something like SVN?

Do you have any guidance where to start? I know that the good start is the iGoogle Developer Home site and that framework what I would like exists - Shindig, but is little clumsy. Tutorial links do not work, for start. Do you think it would be wise to use Shindig? Maybe just for a start and then develop any customizations, if needed? Or would be wiser to start from scratch? • advice on working on remote asp.net applications

  Hi folks, I'm a (relatively new) developer using asp.net with VB.NET. Currently all my applications are developed on my PC and then are built and moved onto the web server. I'm going to be working remotely for 3 months in which time I'll be connecting to the company network via VPN. What is the best way to access my projects? I need to have the projects stored on the company network so that others can access them too. So simply copying the projects to my laptop, working on them, then copying them back won't suffice. I tried to just open the projects off of the network share but am getting application trust problems. I'm just wondering what other developers do in this situation? Jonesy
