  • Signal amplitude against time in Java

    I'm racking my brain in order to solve a knotty problem (at least for me). While playing an audio file (using Java) I want the signal amplitude to be displayed against time. I mean I'd like to implement a small panel showing a sort of oscilloscope (spectrum analyzer). The audio signal should be viewed in the time domain (vertical axis is amplitude and the horizontal axis is time). Does anyone know how to do it? Is there a good tutorial I can rely on? Since I know very little about Java, I hope someone can help me.

Actually, i'm looking for a way to get the signal emitted when i click on a GtkEntry. if (widgets_info[i].action & IG_INPUT) { widget->frame[i] = gtk_entry_new_with_max_length(MAX_INPUT_LENGTH); gtk_entry_set_text(widget->frame[i], widgets_info[i].text); catch_signal(widget->frame[i], MY_SIGNAL, &change_entry, widget); } I have a pre-selected text in my entry (widgets_info[i].text) and i want this text to disappear if the user click on my GtkEntry.   • Comapring pitches with digital audio

    I work on application which will compare musical notes with digital audio. My first idea was analyzes wav file (or sound in real-time) with some polyphonic pitch algorithms and gets notes and chords from this file and subsequently compared with notes in dataset. I went through a lot of pages and it seems to be a lot of hard work because existing implementations and algorithms are mainly/only focus on monophonic sound. Now, I got the idea to do this in the opposite way. In dataset I have for example note: A4 or better example chord: A4 B4 H4. And my idea is make some wave (or whatever I don't know what) from this note or chord and then compared with piece of digital audio. Is this good idea? Is it better/harder solution? If yes can you recommend me how to do it?

    If i have a web application and i receive credit card data transmitted via a POST request by a web browser over HTTPS and instantly open a socket (SSL) to a remote PCI compilant card processor to forward the data and wait for a response, am i allowed to do that? or is this receiving the data with my application and forwarding it already subject of "processing credit card data"? if i create an iframe that is displayed in a client browser to enter cc data and this iframe posts the data via HTTPS to remote card processor (directly!) is this already a case of processing credit card data? even if my application code 'doesnt touch' the entered data with any event handlers? i'm interested in the definition "credit card data processing". when does it start to be a cc data processing application? can somebody maybe point me to that section in PCI-DSS standard that clearly defines when you start to 'be a processing application'?   • Handling Digital ID/Signature in Outlook Add-in

    I have a C# Outlook Add-In application (VS2005 and 2003 Outlook) that reads incoming emails and strips out the attachments and the email text body for future processing. Occasionally I'll get an email that contains a digital signature. The application will fail when I try to access the mailitem.body property, throwing the following exception: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0xAB404001): The operation failed. at Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook._MailItem.get_Body() at MyLib.MyApp.OutlookAddin.MailProcessor.ProcessMailItem(MailItem mailItem) I'm pretty sure it is the digital signature causing the problem because if I forward the email back to myself, it will strip off the original sender's digital signature and the add-in application will process the email without any problems. I'm not sure what to do. I need to process the email, so I can't just ignore it. Somehow getting the body of the original email without throwing an exception would be ideal. Or I guess if I can identify that there is a digital signature associated with the email, I could forward the email to myself, but that seems a little messy. Does anyone have any suggestions/fixes? Thanks for any help.

    A digital root, according to Wikipedia, is "the number obtained by adding all the digits, then adding the digits of that number, and then continuing until a single-digit number is reached." For instance, the digital root of 99 is 9, because 9 + 9 = 18 and 1 + 8 = 9. My Haskell solution -- and I'm no expert -- is as follows. digitalRoot n | n < 10 = n | otherwise = digitalRoot . sum . map (\c -> read [c]) . show $ n As a language junky, I'm interested in seeing solutions in as many languages as possible, both to learn about those languages and possibly to learn new ways of using languages I already know. (And I know at least a bit of quite a few.) I'm particularly interested in the tightest, most elegant solutions in Haskell and REBOL, my two principal "hobby" languages, but any ol' language will do. (I pay the bills with unrelated projects in Objective C and C#.) Here's my (verbose) REBOL solution: digital-root: func [n [integer!] /local added expanded] [ either n < 10 [ n ][ expanded: copy [] foreach c to-string n [ append expanded to-integer to-string c ] added: 0 foreach e expanded [ added: added + e ] digital-root added ] ] EDIT: As some have pointed out either directly or indirectly, there's a quick one-line expression that can calculate this. You can find it in several of the answers below and in the linked Wikipedia page. (I've awarded Varun the answer, as the first to point it out.) Wish I'd known about that before, but we can still bend our brains with this question by avoiding solutions that involve that expression, if you're so inclined.   • apt-get fails to upgrade, install, remove etc

    I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04, had no issues that I noticed. Recently tried to install something via software center, but it was throwing errors. Changed to trying to sudo apt-get install instead but again no luck. I've genuinely tried as much as I know to fix this, but I can't so I figured I'd ask here. I've done sudo apt-get update successfully but sudo apt-get upgrade failed with... You might want to run ‘apt-get -f install’ to correct these.   • Western Digital My Book World drops off network

    Most of my storage in my house relies on a WD My Book World Edition 500GB network drive. I threw out the vendor crapware they give you to access it (a trial version of Mionet) after it starting nagging me to upgrade, and set it up as a standard network drive using Window's Map Network Drive. However, since then, it has been dropping off the network after 30 minutes of non-usage. The only way to get it back on is to switch it off and on again at the plug socket. Does anyone know what is causing this, and hopefully how to fix it? EDIT: it's the original "blue rings" version with the latest firmware.

  • 3½" PATA Western Digital Caviar SE (250MB) makes steady ticking sound when idle

    I've started to notice a ticking sound emanating from my WD2500JB. It is not alarmingly loud. The sound seems to occur only when the drive has been idle for some time, and will cease upon (some?) disk activity. The sound has a regular, steady cadence of somewhere between about 4 and 6 ticks per second. I'm not entirely certain that it just started making these sounds, since I previously had the drive — mounted in a USB enclosure — stored out of earshot, and only recently moved it to where I can hear it. The SMART attributes for the drive do not indicate any problems. I did have some errors to clean up recently (since I started noticing the sounds). The errors occurred on an ext3 filesystem. The drive had been powered down while mounted a few times prior to that fsck. Is this cause for alarm? Should I scrap the drive on principle?

    I have WD Essential Plus 1.5TB (formatted in NTFS). It was working fine under windows and mac mini. While it was connected to the mac mini, I had an power outage and now the HD is not being recognized under windows anymore. Now on the mac mini the HD is fine and I can see my data. When I use ActiveBootDisk under windows, then I can see the data as well. I updated the drivers on windows machine and also updated the firmware on the HD, but its still not being recognized. Is there any way for me to fix the HD under windows without having to re-format it?

    I am trying to replicate the results from a paper. "Two-dimensional Fourier Transform (2D-FT) in space and time along sections of constant latitude (east-west) and longitude (north-south) were used to characterize the spectrum of the simulated flux variability south of 40degS." - Lenton et al(2006) The figures published show "the log of the variance of the 2D-FT". I have tried to create an array consisting of the seasonal cycle of similar data as well as the noise. I have defined the noise as the original array minus the signal array. Using fftshift shifts the edges of the image to the centre; I still have a power spectrum regardless. I expect that the reason that I get rows of zeros is that I have re-created the timeseries for each pixel. The ft[0, 0] pixel contains the mean of the signal. So the ft[1, 0] corresponds to a sinusoid with one cycle over the entire signal in the rows of the starting image. Here are is the starting image using following code: plt.pcolormesh(signal_time_lon); plt.colorbar(); plt.axis('tight') Here is result using following code: ft = np.fft.rfft2(signal_time_lon) mgft = np.abs(ft) ps = mgft**2 log_ps = np.log1p(mgft) plt.pcolormesh(log_ps); plt.colorbar(); plt.axis('tight') It may not be clear in the image but it is only every second row that contains completely zeros. Every tenth pixel (log_ps[10, 0]) is a high value. The other pixels (log_ps[2, 0], log_ps[4, 0] etc) have very low values.

  • Western Digital Mybook is creating folders I didn't create

    I have a WD MyBook which has been creating empty folders with a long string of numbers and alphabets and some shorter ones with just some numbers with a 0kb file in it Some of these can be deleted but some just stay put. It's irritating to find new ones everyday and now i have a collection of them which don't delete is there any way to delete these ? Edit: I have scanned the drive using Antivirus and AntiMalware Software so i don't think it would have a virus One solution is copying all the matter elsewhere and formatting the hard disk but there is not guarantee that these folders wont reappear.

The drives that were returned to me are the "Green" drives which I've read are NOT recommended for RAID. Is it possible that this is interfering with them reading externally? Any other ideas? My main computer is a laptop so using them internally isn't an option :(

  • Photoshop batch image processing based on EXIF?

    I use Photoshop to batch convert my RAW files to JPG. I was wondering if there was a way to make it take different actions based on EXIF? With my particular camera lens, if I open it all the way to F1.7 there is noticeable vignetting, but stopping down smaller doesn't have that problem. What I'd like to do is have Photoshop batch process all my RAW files, and anything that is at F1.7 it should automatically apply vignette correction, but not on the others (applying correction to the others would over-brighten the corners of the image). Is anything like this possible? Should I use some other RAW processing tool instead? FYI they are RW2 files from a Panasonic GF1 camera.

  • Ideas on frameworks in .NET that can be used for job processing and notifications

    Scenario: We have one instance of WCF windows service which exposes contracts like: AddNewJob(Job job), GetJobs(JobQuery query) etc. This service is consumed by 70-100 instances of client which is Windows Form based .NET app. Typically the service has 50-100 inward calls/minute to add or query jobs that are stored in a table on Sql Server. The same service is also responsible for processing these jobs in real time. It queries database every 5 seconds picks up the queued jobs and starts processing them. A job has 6 states. Queued, Pre-processing, Processing, Post-processing, Completed, Failed, Locked. Another responsibility on this service is to update all clients on every state change of every job. This means almost 200+ callbacks to clients per second. Question: This whole implementation is done using WCF Duplex bindings and works perfectly fine on small number of parallel jobs. Problem arises when we scale it up to 1000 jobs at a time. The notifications don't work as expected, it leads to memory overflow etc. Is there any standard framework that can provide a clean infrastructure for handling this scenario?? Apologies for the long explanation!

I receive a ucontext_t as parameter, I can change the bad operand from 0 to another value but the FPU context is still bad and I run into an infinite loop ? Does someone already manupulate the ucontext_t structure on Linux ? I finally found a way to handle these situations by clearing the status flag of ucontext_t like this: ... const long int cFPUStatusFlag = 0x3F; aContext->uc_mcontext.fpregs->sw &= ~cFPUStatusFlag; ... 0x3F is negated to put 0 in the 6 bits of the status register of the FPU (x87). Doing this implies to check for FPE exceptions after calculation.
