• Cyrus IMAP: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

  I'm working on setting up a Cyrus 2.2 IMAP server on Ubuntu Server 9.04. If I telnet from the server itself: # telnet localhost imap I get: * OK IMAP Cyrus IMAP4 v2.2.13-Debian-2.2.13-14ubuntu3 server ready Which is what I should be seeing.   I've been trying for a long time to get our company's mail server send mail that will get accepted by the GMail spam filter. I have managed making it work for Yahoo Mail and Hotmail, sadly GMail is still marking our mails as spam.   I am writing an application which reacts to emails sent to a mailbox. It retrieves the emails via IMAP. It will be deployed to a number of systems where I do not control the mail server configuration. I would like to use IMAP flags to indicate which messages have been handled. Are the system flags sufficiently widely supported that I can reasonably depend on them in my application? Are user-defined flags sufficiently widely supported? (If the answer is "ha ha, not a chance", then I shall use folders instead.) Thanks -Ben

• Gmail: Find emails that do not have a label

  Hello, I am trying to search for all of my mail that does not have a label. I label all of my mail then archive it but I think throughout the years I have forgotten some. Is there anyway I can search for all mail that does not have a label? Idea I had: Go to my All Mail and apply an arbitrary label to all of them, then go to each of my labels and remove my arbitrary one. However, is there a quick way to add a label to ALL mail for this idea to work? Also, I think this will apply it to even my sent mail instead of just mail that was sent to me? Any ideas/suggestions would be great. Thanks!

• thunderbird - how to have emails erased automatically removed from gmail?

  I understand that by connecting via imap to my gmail account with thunderbird, whatever i do in thunderbird would be reflected in gmail. Yet, if i delete emails in thunderbird, those emails are still present in gmail, even after a while. I set my account preferences in thunderbird under the option "leave messages on the server?" to: "until i delete them". Did i understood imap wrong, or did i set up something wrong? I would really like to be able to clean up my gmail account via a desktop client, such as thunderbird, as it is much more responsive, and i have 4gb of messages to clean up.

• Display archived emails in inbox thread? (Gmail + Thunderbird 3.1)

  A features that I liked in GMail was that when an email arrived that was a reply to an earlier email, Gmail would display all of the previous emails along with the new one in a single thread in my inbox. Importantly, GMail would display emails in the thread even if they had been previously archived. Now I am using Thunderbird to access GMail. Thunderbird 3.1 supports Gmail-style archiving and threads, but it only dispalys messages in threads if they are in the same folder. If I have an email thread with someone and I archive that thread and then a new message arrives, only the new message appears in my inbox. This is really inconvenient. Before I could archive a thread without worrying that I would lose the contents of the thread should a new email arrive. Now, if an email arrives I must go through the All Mail box and find the rest of the thread. Is there any way to set Thunderbird so that it will automatically show the archived emails in the thread along with the new one? Perhaps there is some way to automatically un-archive the rest of the messages? Maybe this is an add-on waiting to be written?

  I have a python script that interfaces gmail accounts and allows searches, etc. This works on normal emails (ending on @gmail.com) but not on domain accounts. In this case authentication is done via SAML, and IMAP is enabled on the gmail domain account... The instructions from google on how to configure IMAP only seem to work for @gmail.com accounts... I've tried authentication to IMAP using user, user@admin and using host: imap.gmail.com as well as my domain's email and authentication is not working.... is there a specific 'host' from gmail for domain accounts? other way to get imap on gmail domain accounts? • How to configure postfix for per-sender SASL authentication

  I have two gmail accounts, and I want to configure my local postfix server as a client which does SASL authentication with smtp.gmail.com:587 with credentials that depend on the sender address. So, let's say that my gmail accounts are: [email protected] and [email protected]. If I sent a mail with [email protected] in the FROM header field, then postfix should use the credentials: [email protected]:psswd1 to do SASL authentication with gmail SMTP server. Similarly with [email protected], it should use [email protected]:passwd2. Sounds fairly simple. I checked the configurations multiple times and even compared them to those in various blog posts addressing the same issue but found them to be more or less the same as mine. So, can anyone point me in the right direction, in case I'm missing something? Many thanks.

• IMAP email migration from Apptix to Office 365

  I am having issues setting up a migration from Apptix to Office 365 of 41 users in my company. I've found a couple guides on the Microsoft website about how to do it (Thank you Google) but I keep coming up with problems. I am trying to set up a mailbox migration through IMAP to get all of my users' emails over to Office 365 before we make the transition over from Apptix. One of the forums suggested using IMAP, since a CSV file can be uploaded to Office 365 and it will check for incoming mail for each user every 24 hours. My problem is that when I do this, I just get errors. • GMail IMAP + Apple Mail / iPhone - "Account exceeded bandwidth limits. (Failure)"

  Started seeing this this morning in Apple Mail. I have one of those exclamation point error indicators next to "Inbox", with this error message when I click on it: There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “IMAP Account” or try again. The server returned the error: Account exceeded bandwidth limits. (Failure). This is in Snow Leopard. I'm using GMail IMAP, and I am way below the size quota - I've never heard of there even being a bandwidth quota. I'm also not getting mail from the same account to the mail app on my iPhone. EDIT - a month later I'm seeing this, and I'm thinking of just switching Mobile Me. EDIT AGAIN - Making community wiki. I stopped seeing the problem once I updated Snow Leopard to the latest version, but since others continue to see it...

• How do you manage Labeled and All-Mail unread mails in Thunderbird with a GMail IMAP accounnt?

  I use Thunderbird with gmail via imap and do so with multiple accounts. On the gmail side I have filters that will automatically assign labels to incoming mail and archive it moving it out of the inbox. On the Thunderbird side it will see the new mail appear in the corresponding folder and the all mail folder -- that's fine but my problem is that they're both marked as unread. Since I have many accounts I use the unread mail view in Thunderbird's folder panel and what I see is both folders highlighted as unread. When I read the message in one folder the other only get marked as read I click on it and Thunderbird does another imap transaction. Is there a configuration that will recognize the same mail in two different folders automatically?

I know you can use gmail as an outbound SMTP server, but is there any way to access new messages sent to the account? EDIT: Thanks for the rapid feedback....so I have two options, POP or IMAP. • Exchange 2003 IMAP not working for some users

  We normally don't have a need for IMAP connections from outside the company network but in order to allow a one user to use IMAP on a portable device I've turned it on and opened port 993 on the firewall. When the user in question was unable to get connected I tested this using Outlook remotely. Start by creating a new IMAP account in Outlook using a test account. No problems, it worked perfectly. Now try the same thing using the account of the user who actually needs to connect and it's a no-go. Outlook simply keeps prompting for logon credentials. Next I tried using my own account and that too failed. Testing with a couple of other accounts worked perfectly. Interestingly enough, with my own account I've used IMAP on a MAC before (internally) without a problem and I'm not aware of anything that has changed which could affect IMAP on my account. Checking the user settings in ADUC showed that all accounts have the same Exchange protocol settings. Specifically, IMAP is enabled. A check of the event logs on the server reveals no entries for the connection attempts, making this kind of difficult to debug. Has anyone here encountered such a situation and, even more importantly, what caused it?

• Managing multiple IMAP accounts in Thunderbird

  I've been using Thunderbird for years without issues with 20+ pop3 accounts. I'm moving over to imap which will enable me to keep copies of the emails locally and on the server whilst keeping everthing synchronised. However I'm looking for the best way to manage multiple imap accounts on Thunderbird. Currently I have a filter that copies all the emails into a central inbox and into seperate local folders. The reason for this is I go through my inbox daily and delete all emails that don't require any action. I move any emails that require action to my "action" imap account folder. This way I can syncronise all the emails that require action across multiple computers (and mobile devices). This technique is my implemantion of the GTD or Getting things Done philosophy. I also copy over each email into seperate local folders. The reason I do this is just in case any emails on the imap accounts get deleted, or something drastic happens on the server which means I lose all the emails. My business partner has access to some of these emails and still uses pop3 (with "leave copy on server" checked), but I know sometimes Thunderbird can still delete emails off the server sometimes. The problem with the above is that thunderbird gives me the dreaded error dialogue saying that the emails cannot be filtered due to another process. I find the folder list in Thunderbird hard to manage. Here is a screenshot of part of my folder list- as you can see it's a bit of a complicated list and not easy to manage: What would be the best way of me managing multiple imap accounts whilst allowing me to have copies put in a central folder and emails in local folders? It would be useful if people think this is necessary, as perhaps there is a betterway? How do people manage multiple imap accounts in a way that allows them to keep on top of actionable emails? I'd be interested in how others manage this. I've never used the Thunderbird-based client "Postbox", does this handle multiple imaps better?

I am trying to setup my gmail imap connection which has worked previously but now doesnt want to know.   Im using Thuderbird IMAP accesing my Gmail account, what folder needs to subscribe and what safe to unsubscribe? I ask this because I noticed that the messages inside say example: Important Folder, Starred Folder, etc, have the same contents meaning they are also have copies in either Sent Items and/or Inbox. How to resolve this? If I unsubscribe to all the folder but except Inbox and Sent Items only, will I be missing something on my messages? Thanks you

  I want to backup my Outlook email into Gmail. I have setup my Gmail account in Outlook using IMAP like is suggested here - http://www.keenerliving.com/importing-outlook-into-gmail - and I can successfully upload Outlook emails into Gmail, but Exchange mail doesn't copy across the sender and receivers. All Exchange emails in Gmail are listed as sent by (unknown sender). How do you upload Exchange emails into Gmail from Outlook while maintaining the correct From and To email addresses?
