• How do I get same scrollbar style for gtk-2.0 and gtk-3.0 apps?

  Sorry for my English mistakes, I'm Spanish. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 in a tablet. I've removed overlay-scrollbars and I have increased the scrollbars size to use them with fingers. In /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc I've changed: GtkScrollbar::slider-width = 23 GtkScrollbar::min-slider-length = 51 and added: GtkScrollbar::has-backward-stepper = 0 GtkScrollbar::has-forward-stepper = 0 In /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/gtk-widgets.css I've changed: GtkScrollbar-min-slider-length: 51; GtkRange-slider-width: 23; (in .scrollbar item) Now my scrollbars are usable with fingers, but they seem different for gtk-2.0 and gtk-3.0 apps. In the picture the left scrollbar is a gtk-2.0 app and the right one is a gtk-3.0 I want to setup gtk2.0 bar to be exactly the same as gtk3.0, that is Make upper and lower extremes empty (oranges circles in the picture) Reduce the length of the 3 horizontal lines (black ellipse) Can somebody help me? • How to protect a peer-to-peer network from inappropriate content?

  I’m developing a simple peer-to-peer app in .Net which should enable users to share specific content (text and picture files). As I've learned with my last question, inappropriate content can “relatively” easily be identified / controlled in a centralized environment. But what about a peer-to-peer network, what are the best methods to protect a decentralized system from unwanted (illegal) content? At the moment I only see the following two methods: A protocol (a set of rules) defines what kind of data (e.g. only .txt and jpg-files, not bigger than 20KB etc.) can be shared over the p2p-network and all clients (peers) must implement this protocol. If a peer doesn’t, it gets blocked by other peers. Pro: easy to implement. Con: It’s not possible to define the perfect protocol (I think eMail-Spam filters have the same problem) Some kind of rating/reputation system must be implemented (similar to stackoverflow), so “bad guys” and inappropriate content can be identified / blocked by other users. Pro: Would be very accurate. Con: Would be slow and in my view technically very hard to implement. Are there other/better solutions? Any answer or comment is highly appreciated.

   Il 27 giugno a Verona si è tenuta la seconda edizione di Fabbrica Futuro dedicata all’area Nord Est d’Italia rivolta a tutti gli attori del mercato manifatturiero che ha voluto mettere a confronto idee, raccontare casi di eccellenza e proporre soluzioni concrete per, come recita il sottotitolo del progetto, l’azienda manifatturiera del domani, e in particolare per le aziende produttrici del Triveneto.All’evento sono intervenute un centinaio di persone, in prevalenza Imprenditori e Manager di linea di aziende appartenenti al settore manifatturiero italiano, con una redemption tra iscritti e presenti di poco inferiore al 50% (48,7%). La dimensione aziendale maggiormente rappresentata dai visitatori presenti è la media azienda produttrice del tessuto manifatturiero italiano.I giudizi espressi dai partecipanti che hanno compilato il questionario di feedback, raccontano di un’esperienza positiva sia in termini organizzativi che di contenuto delle relazioni proposte e del livello dei relatori. • CUOA Workshop: “L’evoluzione dei modelli e dei sistemi di analisi e reporting direzionale”

  Il 26 Giugno scorso presso l’Aula Magna della Fondazione CUOA si è tentuo il workshop “L’evoluzione dei modelli e dei sistemi di analisi e reporting direzionale”, promosso dal Club Finance CUOA con la collaborazione di Oracle .  Una recente analisi di Gartner ha evidenziato che Executives Finance ed IT hanno identificato Business Intelligence, Analytics e Performance Management come tema prioritario su cui concentrare gli investimenti “tecnologici” nel 2013 confermando, se mai qualcuno ne avesse avuto bisogno, la continua e crescente attenzione delle aziende alla propria capacità di definire, produrre e gestire informazioni funzionali all’identificazione di opportunità, alla valutazione di rischi ed impatti, alla simulazione degli effetti di operazioni ordinarie e straordinarie...in un solo concetto, informazioni funzionali alla guida dell’azienda. Questo dato è ancora più interessante se incrociato con il risultato di una survey condotta da CFO Magazine e KPMG International nella quale il 48% dei CFO intervistati ha dichiarato di ritenere i propri sistemi datati ed poco flessibili, quindi un limite, se non proprio un freno, alla loro volontà di essere agenti del cambiamento. A fronte di tutto questo, le aziende dimostrano un crescente interesse a capire cosa fare, oggi e domani, per migliorare la propria capacità di sfruttare una risorsa aziendale estremamente pregiata quale l’informazione. L’    Obiettivo del workshop è quindi stato quello di analizzare in quale scenario stanno operando oggi le aziende del Nord Est Italiano verificando, grazie alle testimonianze di ITAL TBS e del Gruppo Carraro,  lo “stato di salute” dei processi di Business Analytics, il livello di cultura aziendale ed il grado di adozione di soluzioni da parte dei CFO, del Management e più in generale dei decisori aziendali, i percorsi evolutivi e prospettici per migliorare su questi temi

• La Customer Satisfaction non basta più!

  La partita per la conquista della fedeltà dei clienti si gioca sempre meno sul prodotto e sempre più sul servizio. Dal momento che il consumatore di oggi è molto più evoluto e autonomo nelle scelte, il servizio deve andare ben oltre la classica interazione da Customer Service: deve rappresentare una vera e propria esperienza d’acquisto positiva. Questo è il risultato, che poi è una conferma, di Oracle Customer Experience Index, una ricerca che Oracle ha commissionato alla società LoudHouse la quale ha raccolto le opinioni di 1400 consumatori europei, di cui 200 italiani. Addirittura, l'81% di chi fa acquisti sarebbe disposto a pagare di più per una migliore customer experience. Un risultato non banale che la dice lunga su quanto il consumatore oggi sia evoluto e pretenda molto dall’azienda con la quale sta interagendo. Il 70% di coloro che hanno risposto al questionario afferma che se l’esperienza d’acquisto fosse negativa smetterebbe di rivolgersi a una determinata azienda e il 92% di questi comprerebbe da un concorrente. Ecco perchè il Customer Service non è più sufficiente, l’esperienza d’acquisto deve essere a 360° a partire dall’approccio al sito web per acquisire informazioni, all’analisi delle interazioni sui social media, fino alla consistenza delle informazioni e delle risposte che vengono fornite attraverso tutti i canali sia fisici sia virtuali. Per far questo Oracle ha dato vita a un’insieme di soluzioni che ha chiamato proprio Customer Experience Suite e spaziano dalla creazione di siti web evoluti, alla possibilità di fare Intelligence sui Social Media, alla capacità di creare un proficuo dialogo con i clienti in fase di postvendita.   English I'm looking for a billing application (also inventories, shopping, clients, providers, accounts, etc) for small businesses. The software should adapt with Colombia's necessities. I searched for it in Google, and I found several ERP such as OpenBravo and Adempiere, but these applications are very big and difficult to use, in fact, I couldn't make them work. I found an application called Ubifactura (made specifically for Colombia), I downloaded the Java source code, but I don't have any idea about how to compile it. I need someone to help me to compile it or just some recommendations for similar software. The idea is to help small business from my town with one of these applications (it doesn't matter if it is for Windows or Linux), the idea is to help. All help is welcome. Spanish (Español) Estoy buscando una aplicacion de facturacion (tambien inventario, compras, clientes, proveedores, cuentas, etc) para pequeñas empresas, que se adaptade a las necesidades de Colombia, en google encontre varios ERP como openbravo y adempiere, pero aplicaciones muy grandes y dificiles de manejas, de hecho no puede hacerlas funcionar. Encontre un programa llamado Ubifactura, hecho para facturar en Colomabia, descarge los archivos de codigo fuente en java, pero no tengo ni idea de como ponerlo a funcionar, pues habla de eclipce, de un servsdor CVS, que no tengo ni idea de como poner a funcionar, necesito si alguien me puede ayudar a trabajar con estos archivos java, o me suguieran aplicacion de acuerdo a mis necesidades. La idea es bebeficiar a varias pequeñas empresas de mi pueblo con una aplicacion de estas, ni importa si en entorno windows o ubuntu, la idea es aportarles algo desde el software libre.   Several people have got a single domain name server.company.com server, where they are now supposed to host their infrastructure or temporal projects, written in different ways even in different programming languages. How do they divide the domain? Split into subdomains: john.server.company.com, kate.server.company.com, etc. This would need a lot of admins' assistance, time, etc. -- there would be no way for John and Kate to do it themselves. Split into url namespaces: server.company.com/john/, server.company.com/kate/, etc. Pro: They now can make a single welcome page at root with any additional info (if they need?) Con: Each server would need to know their namespace string constant, and hrefs like / whould need patching. Split into ports: server.company.com:8080, server.company.com:8081, etc. and make a single :80 welcome page. Pro: They still can make a single welcome page at :80 Con: ??? I would like to know more pros and cons for 2 and 3 solution.

• ALPS touchpad stops working after reboot

  I recently upgraded to 12.04 LTS. My Compaq Presario CQ-40 324la touchpad worked after first restarting after installation. But after restarting a second time, the touchpad is completely disabled, without having changed anything in the system. I've tried solutions but haven't had good results. The applications I've installed (fro "solutions" are: Pointing Devices Synaptiks Dconf-Tools I've also tried updating GRUB, adding this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.nomux") I tried these commands in a terminal. Neither has worked. sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps El Touchpad ALPS se desactiva al reiniciar Recién he actualizado a Ubuntu 12.04LTS y a mi parecer ha mejorado mucho con respecto a 11.10... Pero ese no es mi punto ahora. El Touchpad funcionó correctamente luego del primer reinicio después de la instalación. Pero luego de volver a reiniciar, el Touchpad queda totalmente deshabilitado sin haber hecho cambio alguno en el sistema. He probado las soluciones en su mayoría y no he tenido buenos resultados. • problem with seam and mdb on jboss5.1

  I have a problem when using a mdb as a seam component. In the bean I inject some other seam somponents. The problem is that when the server restart after a crash and the mdb is deployed it starts reading the messages but seam is not initialized yet and I got an exception(listed above). If i start the server whith the queues empty and submit a message to queue after the server start it is working ok. Is there a posibility to stop or delay the sending off messages on server startup and start sending them only when seam is fully funcional?   Hi, I'm porting an application with EJBs 2.1 from Weblogic9 to JBoss AS5. I have made some of the changes like adding jboss.xml descriptors to EJBs and fixing application.xml of the EAR, but there are still problems when deploying the EAR.   I have some address data which has been exported from a database. If the address had multiple lines, the exported data has joined all the lines into one string with the former lines being separated by dollars signs. Here's one of the addresses: INFORMATION DELIVERY DEPT$704 CHERRY ST$ATLANTA, GA 30332-0900 I'm splitting this into an array on the dollar sign and outputting the three array elements into separate tab-separated fields with printf. For some reason, it comes out like this: INFORMATION DELIVERY DEPT 704 CHERRY ST "ATLANTA, GA 30332-0900" I don't want the quotes around that final field. Can anyone explain why this is happening and how to suppress it? This is being done in Windows Vista with gawk3.1.6. Thanks! gary

• How to structure a Genetic Algorithm class hierarchy?

  I'm doing some work with Genetic Algorithms and want to write my own GA classes. Since a GA can have different ways of doing selection, mutation, cross-over, generating an initial population, calculating fitness, and terminating the algorithm, I need a way to plug in different combinations of these. My initial approach was to have an abstract class that had all of these methods defined as pure virtual, and any concrete class would have to implement them. If I want to try out two GAs that are the same but with different cross-over methods for example, I would have to make an abstract class that inherits from GeneticAlgorithm and implements all the methods except the cross-over method, then two concrete classes that inherit from this class and only implement the cross-over method. The downside to this is that every time I want to swap out a method or two to try out something new I have to make one or more new classes. Is there another approach that might apply better to this problem?

• It seems Windows 8.1 killed my two T60 laptop batteries

  Upgraded Windows 7 to Win8 earlier this year, and last week upgraded to Windows 8.1. (Lenovo T60) Had no problem with battery usage when on Win7 nor Win8. After about a week of Win8.1 on my system, the battery stop working, while the system was on. The orange batt. indicator just keeps flashing. The system does not charge the battery (even though I know there was life in it). I installed a known good fully charged battery from another T60, it worked for aboute 40 mins then it instantly died in fron of my eyes. The system now shows the same orange flashing batt. light, but it is not charging. I know both these batteries are still good, they just appear to be dead. My research suggest that the new Win8.1 may not have updated the battery driver to Win8. I have since done that. Same problem. Research i s also pointing me to some 'smart chip' on the batteries that need to a reset. Is this possible ?? Does anyone know a process to reset the 'smart chip' on these batteries (fru# 92P1139) ????

  <tl;dr> In source version control diff patch generation, would it be worth it to use the optimizations listed at the very bottom of this writing (see <optimizations>) in my Ruby implementation of diff for making diff patches? </tl;dr> <introduction> I am programming something I have never done before and there might already be tools out there to do the exact thing I am programming but at this point I am having too much fun to care so I am still going to do it from scratch, even if there is a tool for this. So anyways, I am working on a Ruby on Rails app and need a certain feature. Basically I want each entry in a table of mine, let's say for example a table of video games, to have a stored chunk of text that represents a review or something of the sort for that table entry. However, I want this text to be both editable by any registered user and also keep track of different submissions in a version control system. The simplest solution I could think of is just implement a solution that keeps track of the text body and the diff patch history of different versions of the text body as objects in Ruby and then serialize it, preferably in human readable form (so I'll most likely use YAML for this) for editing if needed due to corruption by a software bug or a mistake is made by an admin doing some version editing. So at first I just tried to dive in head first into this feature to find that the problem of generating a diff patch is more difficult that I thought to do efficiently. So I did some research and came across some ideas. Some I have implemented already and some I have not. However, it all pretty much revolves around the longest common subsequence problem, as you would already know if you have already done anything with diff or diff-like features, and optimization the function that solves it. Currently I have it so it truncates the compared versions of the text body from the beginning and end until non-matching lines are found. Then it solves the problem using a comparison matrix, but instead of incrementing the value stored in a cell when it finds a matching line like in most longest common subsequence algorithms I have seen examples of, I increment when I have a non-matching line so as to calculate edit distance instead of longest common subsequence. Although as far as I can tell between the two approaches, they are essentially two sides of the same coin so either could be used to derive an answer. It then back-traces through the comparison matrix and notes when there was an incrementation and in which adjacent cell (West, Northwest, or North) to determine that line's diff entry and assumes all other lines to be unchanged. Normally I would leave it at that, but since this is going into a Rails environment and not just some stand-alone Ruby script, I started getting worried about needing to optimize at least enough so if a spammer that somehow knew how I implemented the version control system and knew my worst case scenario entry still wouldn't be able to hit the server that bad. After some searching and reading of research papers and articles through the internet, I've come across several that seem decent but all seem to have pros and cons and I am having a hard time deciding how well in this situation that the pros and cons balance out. So are the ones listed here worth it? I have listed them with known pros and cons. </introduction> <optimizations> Chop the compared sequences into multiple chucks of subsequences by splitting where lines are unchanged, and then truncating each section of unchanged lines at the beginning and end of each section. Then solve the edit distance of each subsequence. Pro: Changes the time increase as the changed area gets bigger from a quadratic increase to something more similar to a linear increase. Con: Figuring out where to split already seems like you have to solve edit distance except now you don't care how it is changed. Would be fine if this was solvable by a process closer to solving hamming distance but a single insertion would throw this off. Use a cryptographic hash function to both convert all sequence elements into integers and ensure uniqueness. Then solve the edit distance comparing the hash integers instead of the sequence elements themselves. Pro: The operation of comparing two integers is faster than the operation of comparing two strings, so a slight performance gain is received after every comparison, which can be a lot overall. Con: Using a cryptographic hash function takes time to convert all the sequence elements and may end up costing more time to do the conversion that you gain back from the integer comparisons. You could use the built in hash function for a string but that will not guarantee uniqueness. Use lazy evaluation to only calculate the three center-most diagonals of the comparison matrix and then only calculate additional diagonals as needed. And then also use this approach to possibly remove the need on some comparisons to compare all three adjacent cells as desribed here. Pro: Can turn an algorithm that always takes O(n * m) time and make it so only worst case scenario is that time, best case becomes practically linear, and average case is somewhere between the two. Con: It is an algorithm I've only seen implemented in functional programming languages and I am having a difficult time comprehending how to convert this into Ruby based on how it is described at the site linked to above. Make a C module and do the hard work at the native level in C and just make a Ruby wrapper for it so Ruby can make all the calls to it that it needs. Pro: I have to imagine that evaluating something like this in could be a LOT faster. Con: I have no idea how Rails handles apps with ruby code that has C extensions and it hurts the portability of the app. This is an optimization for after the solving of edit distance, but idea is to store additional combined diffs with the ones produced by each version to make a delta-tree data structure with the most recently made diff as the root node of the tree so getting to any version takes worst case time of O(log n) instead of O(n). Pro: Would make going back to an old version a lot faster. Con: It would mean every new commit, the delta-tree would get a new root node that will cost time to reorganize the delta-tree for an operation that will be carried out a lot more often than going back a version, not to mention the unlikelihood it will be an old version. </optimizations> So are these things worth the effort?

• Avoid implicit conversion from date to timestamp for selects with Oracle using Hibernate

  I'm using Hibernate 3.2.7.GA criteria queries to select rows from an Oracle Enterprise Edition 10.2.0.4.0 database, filtering by a timestamp field. The field in question is of type java.util.Date in Java, and DATE in Oracle. It turns out that the field gets mapped to java.sql.Timestamp, and Oracle converts all rows to TIMESTAMP before comparing to the passed in value, bypassing the index and thereby ruining performance. One solution would be to use Hibernate's sqlRestriction() along with Oracle's TO_DATE function. That would fix performance, but requires rewriting the application code (lots of queries). So is there a more elegant solution? Since Hibernate already does type mapping, could it be configured to do the right thing?
