• Changing privilege rights on Arch Linux for a particular program

  I am quite new to linux and have had issues surrounding every program that I install. Basically, anything that is placed outside of my home directory requires a sudo call prior to opening/executing. I cannot write to files, open usb devices, or run programs that exist outside of this directory (specifically, above this directory). I know this is a privilege problem, but I come here to ask how this can be permanently stopped. How can I configure things such that when programs are installed I do not have to manually find the executable and change its privilege requirements?

• Automatically Login & Startup A Windows Program On Amazon's EC2 Service

  How can I automatically start a program on Amazon's EC2 Windows 2008 web servers? For example, if I wanted to test the "Digg effect" on a web page of mine, how could I open 100 windows 2008 servers at once, each loading one (or two?) instances of the firefox web browser? I have placed a sample batch file in the windows startup folder that echos the time it was called, but it is only started when I actually login remotely via the remote desktop protocol. I don't want to have to login to 100 servers to get my software to run :P What can I do? I am using this Windows 2008 Datacenter, Amazon-supplied AMI specifically: ami-a2698bcb

• What program should I use for SSL stripping and re-encrypting

  I'm trying to strip a HTTP over SSL connection down to SSL and then re-encrypt the channel (with a signed certificate(s) I can provide). Of course I want to be able to store captures of all the un-encrypted data. The purpose of this is to reverse engineer a HTTP handshake that is used by a SIP program on my machine. I've tried SSLstrip but it doesn't support what I need it too. Edit: I want something to this effect https://github.com/applidium/Cracking-Siri/blob/master/tcpProxy.rb only more generic and able to write to a pcap stream that wireshark will understand (I'm not sure if this does that). Edit2: upon further inspection this does not create pcap streams. I guess if need be I can write a compatible version but that is not the desired choice.

  I need to draw a few diagrams that describe the working of some smaller programs (nothing real, but some exercise to illustrate some points). They're supposed to be 'old kind' diagrams, like you remember from the "old school of programming" - I gather some users here will know what I mean. And it's be good if they have ready blocks for program units, IF conditions, FOR/DO loops and such ... So, anyone knows of an application for such ? (I've tried Visio which I have on my work machine (for whatever reason ... I sure didn't put it there) ... but it is "too visual" for this kinda thing ... I just want to draw a few simple black on white diagrams ... nothing special or in colours).

  I'm moving my family off of using the low tech "Boynton Mom's Family Calendar" to schedule things but I'd like to be able to create a monthly printout of the calendar in the same "Boynton" format (I'm sure it has an official name). The format is kind-of like a spreadsheet where each row of the calendar is a different day of the month and there is a separate column for each person in the family. I have all our calendars on Google but they are also accessible from iCal on the Mac. Is there a Mac program that can get the data from gCal or iCal print out the calendars in the Boynton format?

  I do a lot of sketching with my pen-tablet. I use Microsoft Paint in Windows 7, and it is just perfect except for bad anti-aliasing. I found some videos of Salman Khan, where his sketching is really smooth and anti-aliased. Do you know what program he might use?   I'm using a very old cms, Synkron.web. I need to convert all of my pages (written in .asp) to plain html - so I have an archive where all of the pages from my website are saved. I was wondering if there isnt some kind of program out there, with the ability to traverse all documents on a website, view their source, and save them as html-pages on my local machine? If not, do you have any suggestions on how to convert a Synkron.web database, to some kind of open-source CMS? Like Wordpress, etc...

• Missing autochk program during boot

  I just resized a windows partition which involved shifting about 160GB to the left. After that it couldn't find the boot like normal so I ran the system repair tool like normal(I resize this partition a lot and each time I have to use the repair disk). But, this time, when I rebooted into the recovered 7 partition, it displayed the windows logo like normal but then flashed up autochk program not found -- skipping autocheck After that being on the screen for about 8 seconds, there was a flash of a bluescreen with white text and it rebooted. I have tried running the repair disk multiple times, but it returns and fixes the same problem each time, and the same thing happens on boot each time. Is there anything I can do to fix this short of reinstalling Windows? I have also ran two chkdsks from my vista partition with no errors reported and when viewing all the files on the drive everything seems to be in place.

• Execute background program in bash without job control

  I often execute GUI programs, such as firefox and evince from shell. If I type "firefox &", firefox is considered as a bash job, so "fg" will bring it to foreground and "hang" the shell. This becomes annoying when I have some background jobs such as vim already running. What I want is to launch firefox and dis-associate it with bash. Consider the following ideal case with my imaginary runbg: $ vim foo.tex ctrl+z and vim is job 1 $ pdflatex foo $ runbg evince foo.pdf evince runs in background and I get me bash prompt back $ fg vim goes foreground Is there any way to do this using existing program? If no, I will write my own runbg.

• Run a program in compatibility mode without Administrator privileges

  I have a PC which is mostly used for playing games. The PC is a few years old, running XP, and most likely won't ever be upgraded to Windows 7. However, there are a few games that need to be run in compatibility mode for some reason, and this currently requires them to be run as the administrator. Unfortunately, I haven't found any way around this - although I have the administrator password, I don't want to reveal it to the others who use the PC, and this means that I have to be present every time to start the program for them (using Run as ... - Administrator). Is there any way I can allow these programs to be run in compatibility mode without requiring elevated user privileges? I have already made the standard user a Power User, but this hasn't helped at all. Any advice would be appreciated.

• What program is making this sound and how can I make it stop

  Some program is intermittently making this weird "chook ... chick" sound, no more than every 5 minutes, but sometimes hours or days between making it. There seems to be no pattern as to when it happens, but the sound is definitely coming from the speakers, and is always the same, so I'm pretty confident some piece of software I'm running is playing the sound. Today, I managed to record it, and I've posted it here: http://tristanhavelick.com/chook-chick.mp3 Short of closing my programs one by one, and seeing if the sound continues, are there any tricks for tracking down a problem like this? Is there any software that can trace what sounds come from what programs (something like tcpview with waveforms)? I am running windows xp.

• Current alternative to the old CHECKSUM program

  I'm looking for an application that does md5/sha hash check on specific files/folders periodically and store an index file per folder for future verification. I remember such application exist in DOS days, to detect files infected by virus. The main purpose for this is to detect corrupted copy of backup, as I understand that consumer grade hardware are not 100% error free when doing backup or file transfer from device to device. The hash can also be used to generate a list of changed files for backup. Most of the software I can find is hash manually. EDIT: Windows based application, preferably a shell extension which I can right click on a folder and do a checksum/verify all files in that folder. Even better if that can integrate with a backup/sync program like BeyondCopy

  I have a Logitech M510 wireless mouse and am on a Mac. Right now I can assign different actions to the 2 thumb buttons through the Logitech control panel. What I want to do is have mouse button combos to perform actions. So if I am holding thumb button 1 and click the left button, a tab will close in Chrome. As well as any other "hold one button, click another" combination. Is there any program out there that gives this type of customization?

• Cannot access an application folder in Program files

  I recently installed Windows 7 Professional 64bit on a new machine. I installed an application using a ClickOnce installer. The application runs fine, but I cannot access the application folder it created in c:\Program files (x86). It bombs with access denied. I try to view the properties on the folder and it takes about 1 minute to display (other folders take 1 second). It says I cannot view any information because I'm not the owner. It doesn't say who the current owner is (instead - Unable to display current owner.) but says I can take ownership. When I try it fails again with Access Denied, even though I have administrative permissions. Why can't I access this folder nor take ownership?

  Hi there, I'm not quite sure if such questions are allowed on SU. I was just wondering whether there is a sketch program like Adobe Ideas for iPad that has an infinite canvas but for OSX. It need not be feature rich and all that. Very simple, just for sketching out some stuff without thinking about the space. I was thinking about some vector tool where I could infinitely zoom in and draw. I'm sure you get the idea of what I am looking for. Any hints? OS is OS X.

  Possible Duplicate: What is the easiest video editing program to use on Windows hi, i want to edit videos, i'm looking for a good, premiere like software. but it seems premiere it self is too much for me... frankly i can see how those settings can be helpful for any one.. but it doesn't matter. i've just imported an HD video from my new camera (CS4), first, it cut most of the video, and second, it actually made the quality worse... i've tried a few free, programs, but as soon as i've seen the GUI of those, i closed them... i really like premier, but i honestly don't understand who needs all this PAL/DV stuff... is there any similar application that intend to more intermediate users? tahnks.

The provider of the system blames the client's computer, and the client calls me for help. I blame the provider, but it is hard to get them to do something about it without rock-solid evidence.   I have made two shell scripts Script 1: It does all Home directory backups with name username_home_date.tar.gz Script 2: It does SQL backups of all sites every 3 hrs. username_databse_date.sql.gz Now currently if I want to restore the site, I have to copy the tar file to /home/username and then untar there with all the permissions as well and then manually import the database. Is there any way (for instance a program, system or script) that I can just select which backup I want to restore and do automatically? Maybe like a cPanel addon thing.

  When running any sudo command from Jenkins I get the following error: sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified I understand that I can solve this by adding a NOPASSWD entry to my /etc/sudoers file which will allow user jenkins to run commands without needing a password. I can add an entry like this: %jenkins ALL=(ALL)NOPASSWD:/home/vts_share/test/sudotest.sh ...but this leads to the following issue: how to avoid specifying full path in sudoers file? I can add an entry like this: %jenkins ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL ...but this allows user jenkins to avoid the password prompt for all commands, which seems a bit unsafe. I'm just curious what my options are here, and if there are any best practices I should consider.

To populate the user accounts you need to provide a connection string akin to: OU=Users,DC=domain,DC=com CN=Domain Users,OU=Users,DC=domain,DC=com Questions: Is there a Tool/Program/Script/Formula that allows me to decipher how these strings might look based on what I can see in Active Directory Users & Computers? Is there a proper/accepted name for these types of connection strings? I don't even know what to Google to get more information about how to format one properly How would I troubleshoot the connection string if I think it looks correctly formatted, but it isn't working?   Is there a program that would dump the complete structure of ID3v2 tags? Not just the frame names and values, but full information such as frame order, text encoding, description encoding (for TXXX frames), presence of unsynchronization, presence of multiple tags... Background: I'm rather curious why some files are incompatible with some programs. For example, some ID3v2.4 tags written by foobar2000 are not read by Winamp; editing with Mutagen fixes them but editing with foobar2000 breaks again. It's not the version or data encoding – most other v2.4 UTF-16 tags work fine... However, if I use foobar2000 to convert the tags to v2.3, then back to v2.4, they start working fine in Winamp – this last bit just does not make any sense. Edit: Linux or/and Windows.

• Printer Properties not sending the correct page size to program

  We have a Zebra 2844 Label Printer with 4"x3" labels in it. When we check the page settings in Windows XP, it is set to the correct size. When we go to print out of any program, it prints 4"x11". I have checked the page settings in one of the programs that we are using and it does show correctly the 4"x3" settings but prints at the incorrect 4"x11". I have followed the steps here Paper size: Printer Properties vs Page Setup and here Is there a way to programatically set the printer properties in windows? but have not been able to glean enough information to figure it out. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it!
