  • Building an Email server for mass emails

    I recently started doing IT odd jobs for a company. The company has a pretty decent sized mail list that costs them over $3000 per month to send out email from. The company is set on creating their own email server so that it can just run and send emails to the client lists. They only send out emails roughly once a month. Has anyone had experience with this? This wouldn't be an email server I guess (as it doesn't need to handle incoming messages) It just has to be able to send around 200,000 emails, once a month. What would be the best way to go about this? Services online like MailChimp have proved to be too pricey. It's not an ad that is being sent out, it's more of a monthly newsletter, so we don't need any crazy software for ROI or anything crazy like that. If I could fit 200,000 people in GMAIL, I'd do it, but I don't think I can (heh... maybe I should try).

  • help building a PC that can image a dozen hard drives simultaneously

    Not sure if this belongs on here or SuperUser, but here goes... I'm trying to figure out how to make a mass hard drive imaging PC out of COTS parts. A dedicated imaging device can do 10 drives at a time, but costs several thousand dollars. So far, I'm thinking to use several 3-port PCI-E Firewire cards, and use some kind of Firewire-to-IDE adapter to connect the drives themselves. The "software" would consist of scripting diskpart, or some other imaging utility. The problem is that I can't seem to find any sort of adapter. I could use standard external hard drive bays, but then I'd have a dozen power cables that I need to plug in. Ugly, messy, and inefficient. I picked Firewire over USB not only for better transfer speeds, but also because FW can deliver power over the bus (and could theoretically power a hard drive). Does anyone have any input on this?

    Hi I'm writing code in Visual Studio but whenever I want to test the application and press the green arrow for "Start debugging", Visual Studio does not automatically recompile the active solution for me and I have to manually build the solution then debug it. Visual Studio used to automatically build before debug and I want this back as contantly having to manually build is a serious pain. Thanks

    I've followed this guide: http://www.phamviet.net/2012/06/03/centos-6-2-compile-php-5-4-2-from-source/ It all works as it should, but when I'm done and I type 'service httpd restart' following by 'php --version', it still displays the old 5.1.6 PHP version. This is 'uname -a' : Linux xxxxxx.com 2.6.32-042stab061.2 #1 SMP Fri Aug 24 09:07:21 MSK 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux It's a VPS hosted in my main dedicated server (OpenVZ). Not sure what else to say, but I appreciate any help :) OS: CentOS 6

    I was using XAMPP and decided to uninstall it and use MacOS' in-built apache and php modules. But while uninstalling XAMPP I deleted /usr/bin/php files and other PHP-CLI files accidentally. And I decided to install newest version of PHP (5.5.12) instead of rebuilding current version (5.4.24). Downloaded it and unzip. After this executed this command as mentioned at this guide. ./configure '--with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs' '--enable-cli' '--with-config-file-path=/etc' '--with-zlib=/usr' '--enable-bcmath' '--with-bz2=/usr' '--enable-calendar' '--disable-cgi' '--with-curl=/usr' '--enable-dba' '--enable-ndbm=/usr' '--enable-exif' '--enable-fpm' '--enable-ftp' '--with-gd' '--enable-gd-native-ttf' '--enable-mbregex' '--with-mysql=mysqlnd' '--with-mysqli=mysqlnd' '--with-pear' '--with-pdo-mysql=mysqlnd' '--with-mysql-sock=/var/mysql/mysql.sock' '--with-tidy' '--enable-wddx' '--with-xmlrpc' '--enable-zip' make make install When i check phpinfo() , it's still version 5.4.24 . This line from my httpd.conf LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so /usr/libexec/apache2/libphp5.so coming from old version and i couldn't ind libphp5.so for new version. There is no libphp5.so file inside modules dir. How can i use new PHP build with Apache ? UPDATE Results of php -v command .   • Building intranet search

    At work, we have lots of information squirreled away in many different sites -- wikis, product docs, ticketing system, etc -- many of which require authentication. I'm very interested in having a single way to search all our various silos, and in my spare time have looked at Nutch, Grub, Django + Haystack, etc. None of these is a complete solution a la Google Mini or Google Search Appliance. Has anybody built a basic intranet search engine out of a mixture of these tools? Would you have recommendations about how to go about it? I like Django, and Haystack seems to be a mildly popular search solution for it, but I'd need to wire up a crawler that can support crawling authenticated sites to it.

  • after building in more ram, bios/debian does nothing [closed]

    My private server has 2x1gb Ram working with a 64bit Debian and an Q6600 Intel. This runs 2 virtual mashines on it each one recives 512mb RAM. Which you can immagine is a bit tight for the hole system. Now i got 2x2gb ram from a friend. I'm not sure if thery are clocking at the same speed, but i'm sure my power adaptor is not on his limit and can handle that. So there are 2 ram sockets left at the mainboard. I shuted down the system and build in the 4 gigs and looked what happen. After pressing the start button, everything gets noisy as known BUT the screen shows nothing, not even the bios stuff it usally does. Why isn't the system booting? I can immagine that it does not direkt link between booting debian and the bios not showing a thing. Or is it Grub? I mounted the system disk, and i can see it, switch folders write stuff with "vim" it does not seems like there is a problem.

  • Hardware recommendations for building an Ubuntu encrypted file server

    I would like to build a file server for my home network using Ubuntu. It will serve files from RAID1 configured disks, either in the OS or in hardware. It will be connected to a Gigabit ethernet LAN. The disks will use an encrypted file system. It will serve samba shares. I would like a recommendation on what kind of processing power/memory I would need to build a box that would be able to sustain the full capacity of the Gigabit ethernet connection in a file transfer for a single connection with the overhead of serving from an encrypted disk. I'm not looking to build a dream server, I just want enough processing capacity for high performance (and reliable) file sharing and spend as little as possible for it. This may be tangential, but what kind of hardware would I need to have a server be able to reliably go into a low power mode when no requests are being made of it?

    Is there a preferred way to create base images for Debian-based customized installations? We are currently going with multistrap but although it's better than hand-crafted chroot stuff, it still has a lot of edges and corners. Is there a more reliable and less error-prone way to produce a root filesystem of a Debian installation with some additional .debs installed? (I don't want to send out a Debian installer with a preseed file though.) Addendum 1: To clarify things a bit: We are delivering some kind of software appliance to our customers. That is, a debian operating system, with some additional software packages -- both our own and third-party ones -- and some configuration changes. To ease the installation process, we have an installer that does nothing more than partitioning, copying files to the partitions and setting up grub. So it's basically an image-based installer. So we are basically running the debian installation ourselves and just distribute the already installed operating system. The question is about the installation part. I want to have that as easy and robust as possible, and of course, it should be an automated process.

    Hi, I am planning to set up a Tech startup company that will provide web application solutions. Eventually we hope to diversify into different areas such as possibly social media or other services. For now we plan on running a high demand (from 1000 to 10,000 users in the first year) website running the application. This includes a MySQL database backend, email, and development servers. My question is then, what type of server arrangement will work best, that is ti say should i have a small cluster of ultra high power machines (E.G. Top of the range Xeons, with 12GB RAM) or will it be better to have more less powerful servers load balanced? Should I go for 1 - 2 u servers rack mounted ot would it be beter for it just to be tower servers for maintainability? Finally I would also like to know what kind of Internet and router i would need, I currently have 10mbit down and barely 1 mbit up, but soon our area will have a fiber optic connection with international speeds of up to 25 mbit / sec. Thanks in advance, RayQuang UPDATE: sorry I forgot to mention it, the platform that I will be using is PHP with the APC code cache, Probably running Debian.

    Hello all, I have three weeks to perform the following basic task. I wish to create an online form in PHP that will get 5 numbers and with them: save the numbers to a MySQL DB do a simple computation on the numbers and return them as an output to the visitor I already have a domain, hosting and a MySQL database+user. I don't know PHP, or SQL or databases. I do have prior knowledge in C and R (which means I have some of the basics of programming, and I am not intimidated of a new languages). My question are: Am I missing something? is there some other skill I should have for this task that I don't know of? What is a good way to learn the skills needed for the task I described?     I am working on a Java project with Eclipse. This project requires a second project (not mine), named sams in its build-path. The sams is provided with a build.xml file and it should generate some code using Apache CXF when building it.   • Building/Testing a Universal iPhone/iPad application

    I have a project configured (I think) to produce Universal binaries. The base SDK is set to 3.2 and the Deployment Target is set to 3.1. Target Device Family is iPhone/iPad and the architecture is armv6 armv7. I had a few questions about how this Universal binary thing really works: 1) When I want to submit an app binary for review, what configuration should I set as the build target? If I set it as "Device - 3.1" I get a warning which says "warning: building with Targeted Device Family" that includes iPad('1,2') requires building with the 3.2 or later SDK". However, if I build with SDK 3.2, will it still run on iPhones with OS 3.1? What's the right configuration for device and architecture (arm6/arm7)? 2) How do I test the scenario above (built with SDK 3.2, but installed on a device running OS 3.1)? If I build with SDK 3.2, when I try to install it on a phone with OS 3.1, I get an error saying that the phone's OS isn't updated. Thanks!

  • Needed environment for building gstreamer plugins in Windows

    Hi, I've been strugling for two weeks to create an environment for building a gstreamer plugin on windows (needed for a songbird addon). I've installed MSYS, MinGW and Cygwin, then installed GStreamer OSSBuild, and I also downloaded the sources for Songbird, which come with their own precompiled version of gstreamer. I was unable to run gst-inspect (or any other gstreamer applications) from the songbird sources and I figured I will settle for OSSBuild. When following the instructions for building a GST plugin (found here) through, cygwin will not recognize the OSSBuild and the build fails when running autogen, with the following error: checking for GST... no configure: error: You need to install or upgrade the GStreamer development packages on your system. On debian-based systems these are libgstreamer0.10-dev and libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev. on RPM-based systems gstreamer0.10-devel, libgstreamer0.10-devel or similar. The minimum version required is 0.10.16. configure failed I could also not use MSYS or MinGW as they are unable to run autogen at all. I understand that cygwin should have it's own gstreamer development packages but I couldn't find how to install them. My question: How do I install the gstreamer packages in cygwin or how do I build using cygwin with the OSSBuild dependencies? In short, how do I get an environment where I can build a gstreamer plugin under windows?

Getting the the 3d meshes for buildings would also be fine since I can compute the height myself using that information.     I'm kind of stuck at this part and was hoping that I'd get some assistance. I'm building a highscores page in PHP, that's going great, it works. However, I dislike the idea of index.php?skill=name and therefore wanted a bit of SEO in this. I have successfully replaced the url with a more friendly version: highscores/skill/name And this is where the problem starts, I have added pagination to the highscores and the page is read from the HTTP_GET page variable ($_GET['page']). I dislike the idea of highscores/skill/name&page=2 and was hoping if you guys could assist me to make the url like the following: Page 1, so accessing the file without declaring the page number: DOMAIN.TLD/highscores/skill/name Page 1 so now the page variable is needed: DOMAIN.TLD/highscores/skill/name/2 As you can tell the "2" will define page 2 and load the correct data for page 2. However, I'm having much trouble in my .htaccess file to configure it this way. RewriteRule ^highscores\/skill\/(.*?)(\/(.*?)*)$ highscores/skills.php?skill=$1&page=$2 [L] # Skills page That is my latest attempt in order to get it to work, unfortunately it does not work, it makes the page look horrible (CSS doesn't work) and it doesn't go to the page specified on the URL.

Due to the lack of experience, our project is progressing slowly and our members are frustrated. They do not feel sense of accomplishment in the project. I am pressured and frustrated, too. But as a team leader, I think I need to push them. But I do not know how to do. Do I help them solve coding problem or just encouragement? But if I pay too much attention on it, it would slow down my own progress. It is a not technical question, but it is very common in software development.
