• Dell V105 printer and OS X 10.6

  I am trying to get a Dell V105 printer to work with my iMac. It is running 10.6 and I have installed all the drivers on the Snow Leopard disk. I believe there is no official Dell driver but I have also heard the Dell printers are made by third parties that may sell the same printer under different names. There a quite a few Lexmark models that seem to look very similar and I have tried setting the driver to the 2600 series that looks very similar but that has not enabled me to print. Although it claims to give me the supply levels correctly. Can anyone help? Thanks for your time

• Terminal command to change permissions to my 'Sites' folder and apply change to enclosed items?

  Using Snow Leopard, I'm having issues with permissions in my Sites folder. While I can navigate to localhost/~username and read any files or folders there, the same permissions have not been applied to enclosed items, and I get a 403 error trying to access them in the browser. If I select one of these enclosed folders and get info using Finder, I see the user 'Everyone' is set to 'No Access' but I can't change that (this behavior seems buggy, actually). And if I select my 'Sites' folder, the tool to 'Apply to enclosed items' is grayed out... Is there a Terminal command I can use to grant 'Read Only' access to my Sites folder, and all it contains, for the user 'Everyone'?

• Stop application windows hiding when app loses focus

  How can I stop windows on my mac (Mac OS Snow Leopard) from hiding when the app that owns the window loses focus. Not all apps on the mac do this, but Photoshop and Transmission are perfect examples of apps that exhibit this behaviour. It's frustrating when you want to type notes in another app (e.g. word processor), but refer to the contents of the window that hides when you focus the word processor to start typing your notes! There must be an option (or hack) to disable this? I always thought Apple were supposed to be the masters of UI design, but allowing apps to do this seems wrong.

• Mail.app slow to include new messages

  With Leopard I was able to link to the University's Exchange 2003 server with and IMAP connection and mail out directly vie the SMTP client. With Snow Leopard I attempted to update to a full Exchange service (Exchange 2007). Almost all has worked OK (ical, address, etc.) except that new mail posted to my email account, which is visible using a 'web' interface to Exchange remains invisible for some random number of hours. Those who are running the Exchange server have no interest in discussing the problem. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

• How do I do advanced searches in Mac OS X?

  I don't get it. I just want to do simple searches that work. When I type part of a filename, I want to see all the files that have that part of the filename. I know how to do this in terminal, but it takes time to open and then to track down the file once it finds it. Is there a way to do this from the Finder? I want to be able to do *.doc and get all my docs, or hello*.txt and find all filenames of that form. Am I missing something obvious? Bonus points if you can tell me how to do boolean searches from the Finder (filename:hello*.txt AND modified:4days) or something. OSX Snow Leopard. Thanks!

  I hope this isn't a stupid question, and if it is, then I want to at least get it over with so I don't feel so dumb in the future. Here we are, loading up a Windows crash dump with Windbg. Here are the first few lines of the debugger output: 0: kd> .dumpdebug ----- 64 bit Kernel Summary Dump Analysis DUMP_HEADER64: MajorVersion 0000000f MinorVersion 00001db1 ... The MinorVersion I mostly understand. It's hexadecimal and it translates to 7601 in decimal. Windows admins would already be able to tell from that that this must be either a Win7 x64 machine or a 2k8 R2 machine with SP1. But isn't 7601 the build number? It's supposed to be Major.Minor.Build/Revision... right? Also I don't understand the MajorVersion. It should be 6. This version of Windows is 6. But isn't 0000000f in hexadecimal 15 in decimal? The full version string of this version of Windows, when you launch the Command Prompt for instance, is 6.1.7601. If 7601 is the MinorVersion, then what is 1 and what is 6? And why does the crash dump say 0F?

• Core Animation not working on Leopard, working on Snow Leopard

  Hi, I animate NSImageViews using its animator proxy. While testing my application on Snow Leopard, everything works as expected. However, on Leopard, none of the animations are functioning. In addition, NSImageViews don't seem to take into effect the alphaValue I set on them, whether through the animator proxy or not. The only way I can get them to disappear is by setting their image to nil. What is weird is that this all works fine in Snow Leopard, but does not work on Leopard 10.5.8. Any idea on why this may be occurring?

Normal activities run regularly. The other guest is up without problem since 25 days. • WxPython Incompatible With Snow Leopard?

  Hello all, Recently I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and now I can't run programs built with wxPython. • Optimal Sharing of heavy computation job using Snow and/or multicore

  Hi, I have the following problem. First my environment, I have two 24-CPU servers to work with and one big job (resampling a large dataset) to share among them. I've setup multicore and (a socket) Snow cluster on each. As a high-level interface I'm using foreach. What is the optimal sharing of the job? Should I setup a Snow cluster using CPUs from both machines and split the job that way (i.e. use doSNOW for the foreach loop). Or should I use the two servers separately and use multicore on each server (i.e. split the job in two chunks, run them on each server and then stich it back together). Basically what is an easy way to: 1. Keep communication between servers down (since this is probably the slowest bit). 2. Ensure that the random numbers generated in the servers are not highly correlated.

• Timing related crash when unloading a DLL?

  I know I'm reaching for straws here, but this one is a mystery... any pointers or help would be most welcome, so I'm appealing to those more intelligent than I: We have a crash exhibited in our release binaries only. The crash takes place as the binary is bringing itself down and terminating sub-libraries upon which it depends. Its ability to be reproduced is dependent on the machine- some are 100% reliable in reproducing the crash, some don't exhibit the issue at all, and some are in between. The crash is deep within one of the sublibraries, and there is a good likelihood the stack is corrupt by the time the rubble can be brought into a debugger (MSVC 2008 SP1) to be examined. Running the binary under the debugger prevents the bug from happening, as does remote debugging, as does (of all things) connecting to the machine via VNC. We have tried to install the Microsoft Driver Development Kit, and doing so also squelches the bug. What would be the next best place to look? What tools would be best in this circumstance? Does it sound like a race condition, or something else?

• How to populate a core data store programmatically?

  I have ran out of hairs to pull with a crash in this routine that populates a core data store from a 9000+ line plist file. The crash happened at the very end of the routine inside the call to [managedObjectContext save:&error]. While if I save after every object insertion, the crash doesn't happen. Of course, saving after every object insertion totally kills the performance (from less than a second to many minutes). I modified my code so that it saves every K insertions, and the crash happens as soon as K = 2. The crash is an out-of-bound exception for an NSArray: Serious application error. Exception was caught during Core Data change processing: *** -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (1) beyond bounds (1) with userInfo (null) Also maybe relevant, when the exception happen, my fetch result controller controllerDidChangeContent: delegate routine is in the call stack. It simply calls my table view endUpdate routine. I am now running out of ideas. How am I supposed to populate a core data store with a table view?   I had a server crash due to a broken iSCSI link (the filesystem went into read-only mode). I have also tried http://code.google.com/p/innodb-tools/. But this tool fails with an error that 'blob' type is not supported. If I try to access the data using the PHP application it crashes MySQL: `100603 19:19:19 - mysqld got signal 11 ; This could be because you hit a bug. It is also possible that this binary or one of the libraries it was linked against is corrupt, improperly built, or misconfigured. This error can also be caused by malfunctioning hardware.   I have TimeMachine enabled for my external HDD. I'm triggering backups manually 2 times per week. I have noticed, that some snapshots, that i made, are gone. I noticed this behaviour several weeks later, but i had doubts. To make it sure, i've recorded screen video with listing snapshots in TimeMachine. After watching my screen recording today, I'm sure, that for Augusut i had 9 snapshots. Now, i have only 3 of them. What's happening ? I had no crash disk reports, errors etc

• Cannot bind OSX to AD

  I'm trying to get an mac mini running snow leopard server to join a windows domain here. The windows domain server is running Windows server 2008. When I go to "Accounts" in my System Preferences, and lick on "Join", I get this error: "Unable to add server. Node name wasn't found. (2000)" In my console messages I find this: 10-04-06 11:42:25 AM System Preferences1452 -[ODCAddServerSheetController handleOtherActionError: gotError: Error Domain=com.apple.OpenDirectory Code=2000 UserInfo=0x2004f2f80 "Custom call 82 to Active Directory failed.", Node name wasn't found. I specified a FQDN for the domain server, so I am totally confused as to why it would list "domain = com.apple...." in that error. I've tried firing up the Directory Utility and trying to join a domain via the Active Directory option there. Again I fill in the FQDN, and the proper administrator/password acount info. Now I get a different error: "Invalid Domain An invalid Domain and Forest combination was specified. You should enter a fully qualified DNS name for the domain and forest (e.g., ads.company.com)." If anyone has any pointers or suggestions this would be appreciated.

• socket problem with MySQL

  This is a recent problem... MySQL was working and a couple of days ago I must have done something. I deleted MySQL and tried reinstalling using the .dmg file. The mysql.sock file never gets created and I get the following error messages: Hristo$ mysql Enter password: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) I also tried stopping Apache and installing but Apache gave me an error... I don't know if this is good or bad: Hristo$ sudo apachectl stop launchctl: Error unloading: org.apache.httpd I tried the MacPorts installation as well but the socket file still didn't get created. I don't really know what to do and I don't want to reinstall Snow Leopard and start from scratch :/ I also tried installing the 32-bit version and same deal. No luck. Finally... I tried doing the source installation but when I get to the configuration step, I get the following error: -bash: ./configure: No such file or directory The file is "mysql-5.1.47-osx10.6-x86_64.tar.gz" so I think it is the proper file for source installation and yes I have a 64 bit system. • How to use a local Leopard Server Mail server acting "like" an Exchange mail server

  We have a local Exchange 2003 server (company .local) who is collecting POP3 mail accounts on a distant (company .com) mailserver. The mails are collected by the Exchange server every 5-10 minutes and stored locally (on company .local), so the users can read them without going on the "real" mail server (company.com) What was explaned to me is that the mail collection is made with POP Now we are migrating on Snow Leopard Server. We have chosen to use a new extension for our local domain: .leo So our mailserver's FQDN is mail.company.leo, and the users have a user [email protected] formated mail address. A) All works fine except that I can't find how to tell the mail.company.leo that he must retreive the mails from the "real" public server (mail.company.com) I'm hoping to use IMAP and not POP. I can send mail using SMTP relay from mail.company.leo but (I know it's trivial) answering is not possible, even if I specify the reply-to as [email protected] (this seems to be related to A) ) I don't know if it's very complicated (I suspect not, but...) to achieve what I want to do, and I'm not a genius. But as I'm a little bit lost, I hopesomebody can or will help me. Solving this will allow us to use iCal invitations too, so a lot of services depends of these mailserver settings Some of you discuss the fact thta we choose to use a "new" tld with the .leo extension. We have no problem for that, we could use .local. no problem ;) We used .leo instead of .local just to differentiate the two systems (Exchange and SnowLeopardServer). The question was not about that, it was just to know if we can set a SnowLeopard mail server to act like an Exchange Server. • Cannot establish a network connect to VMWare Fusion VM

  I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (not the server edition) with VMWare Fusion 3.0.0 and I trying to get my Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 VM working. I am using a bridged connection, and I have an internet connection FROM the Ubuntu VM (I can download updates, ping websites, etc), but I cannot connect TO the Ubuntu box from any other device on my network. I am trying to get Mongrel up on the Ubuntu VM for some Rails stuff, but it's not working. I know Mongrel/Rails is not the problem because if I start the server on the Ubuntu VM, background the process, and then wget the index page, it works. I just cannot connect to the site from another IP. I have tried using a static IP and a DHCP IP configuration on the Ubuntu VM, neither work (for incoming connections, both work for outwards). I have port scanned the Ubuntu VM, and it appears that all ports are closed. However, the Ubuntu VM does respond to pings. I noticed a similar question here: http://serverfault.com/questions/99757/setting-up-a-bridged-network-with-vmware-fusion, but no answer. Any ideas?
