  My question is in regards to developing code for the iPhone / iTouch. What with Apple's transition to the Intel platform for their chip, it is obviously now possible to run their OS on a PC. So, with that, and my inherently cheap nature, I was wondering if it was possible to bypass the purchase of a refurbished Mac by running the iPhone SDK on a Hackintosh? As I am more of a hobbyist then a serious developer at present, I'd basically like to get my feet wet before fully committing to this endeavor. • Jquery: How can I place triggers on images already cached?

This works great when viewing the page for the first time (or force reloading all content). However, when the image has already been cached, it doesn't use the preloading script and thus does not send the play trigger to jplayer. How can I make it send a play trigger even when the image is cached? Thank you in advance, Dennis

• Wicket : Can a Panel or Component react on a form submit without any boilerplate code?

  I am currently evaluating Wicket and I am trying to figure out how things work. I have a question regarding form submit and panels (or other components). Imagine a custom wicket panel which contains a text field, doing as-you-type validation using ajax. This panel is added to a form. How can the Panel react a form submit (let's say because javascript/ajax is unavailable)? I am currently only aware of one solution: calling a panel's method inside the Form onSubmit() method. But this seems not like a "reusable" approach here, because I have to add boilerplate code to every form's onSubmit() which contains the panel (and every developer which use the panel must know this). So here comes my question: Is there any way that a Panel/Component can "detect" a form submit in some way? Or is there any other solution beside this? Thank you.

• Licensing your code in Mono

  I'm working with some code in Visual Studio. My parter-in-crime fellow developer has suggested that the code also be available to work under Mono. I'm impresed witht he work that is already done in Mono, but I'm very new to Mono, so I don't know what it can/cannot do. I've already written a class in C# using the .NET LicenseManager object. It writes to the windows registry, so I know I'll have to modify it so that it will use some compiler flags like #if Win32 or #if MONO. My question is two-fold: 1) Does Mono implement the same LicenseManager class structure? 2) If so, how do you guys lock down your code using LicenseManager in Linux? (i.e. Write to files, use a hardware dongle, compare to hardware serials, etc??)

And I know with php we gotta learn so much other things also like javascript ajax xml database jquery + all the cms like joomla, drupal, phpbb etc etc. And in web worls u always had to learn injecting maps, calendars, payment gatewaysetc Do learning other languages have these much dependencies? And if php easy than isn't it good thing to have easy language. I can't imagine to built a website in assembly language(Is it possible?)

• Windows Mobile Development on MacBook Pro?

  I am a frequent Windows Mobile application developer in need of a new development laptop. I am considering a MacBook or Macbook Pro running either Fusion from VMWare or Parallels Desktop. This will give me the option to port my applications to the iPhone depending on what MS does with WM 6.5 and 7. Has anybody tried doing Windows Mobile development using Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center (or ActiveSync) and VS2008 on the MacBook Pro using one of these virtual machines? Does the device emulator work properly? What about debugging a Windows Mobile device over a USB cable? In general, do most USB drivers (non HID) designed for Windows work under these virtual machines? Thanks.

  Disclaimer: I've never used technique which is described below. That's why there may occur some mistakes or misunderstandings in its description. I heard that some teams (developers) use 'pre-configured' tomcat. As I understand they add different jars to tomcat \lib folder and do something else. Once I've read something about recompilation (or reassembly?) of tomcat for certain needs. Just yesterday I heard a dialog where one developer sayd that his team-mates were not able to deploy the project until he would give them configured tomcat version. So, I wonder, what is it all about and why do they do it? What benefits can they gain from that?

• What are your build and release steps? When to increment build numbers?

  I am having trouble defining and automating my build process despite simple requirements: Every build should have a unique build number. Every tagged release should be reproducible What I have: A C++, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x, Subversion development environment. A build machine ( actually a virtual machine ) A version.h file with #defines for major, minor, and buildnumber. A script for incrementing the version.h buildnumber. A rpmbuild spec file that exports the tagged Subversion source, builds, and makes the rpm installer packages. Questions: Assuming multiple developers per project, when should the build number be incremented and version.h file be checked-in? The build machine? Some sort of Subversion hook? • Copying (or recovering) a .PFX password to another machine?

  First things first, I'm aware of all of the finger-wagging potential that this question provides. However, I'm attempting to help out a friend with a project so I haven't been part of the decision making process thus far. I'm attempting to set up a new development machine, but one of the projects is signed with a .PFX key that's password protected and the original developer does not remember the password. The current development machine can open and build the project just fine, so I'm wondering if there is any way either to copy or to recover the saved password that Visual Studio is using on the original box so that the file can be used on the new box. Signing with a new file is obviously an option, but one that we'd prefer to avoid. Does anyone know of a way either to recover or copy the credentials for this file to a new machine?

• Using .htaccess to replace backslash in URL with forward-slash

  I realise that a backslash should never appear in a URL in a form other than a URL escape code, however in this case the URL's are being generated by a .NET application for generating flashbooks. I have contacted the developer of this application with a bug report. In the interim i would like to use .htaccess to rewrite the offending backslashes. This is how the URLs appear in fiddler debugging proxy. www.example.com/folder/folder/thumbs%5C1.jpg I am using Firefox and it looks as though Firefox is translating them into the URL encoded equivalent ( \ == %5C1 ). Interestingly IE translates the backslash into a forward-slash automatically (not adhering to standards but convenient in this case). Is there a way to use .htaccess to rewrite all \ to /?

• Learning resources for Linux filesystem, command line, and structure

  Can anyone suggest some good materials for learning more about the Linux filesystem and command line? I have found myself frequently confused as to what programs go where on the Linux filesystem. I would like to learn how the various directories (var, etc, usr ...) are used and how to use the commandline more effectively. I come from the Windows development world (.NET developer) so I am very familiar with Windows system administration. However, when doing more and more work with PHP I found myself lost in the internals of Linux (specifically Ubuntu). For example I was having problems installing PEAR properly on my Ubuntu system and not understanding why it was installed where it was. All of my interactions with Linux machines is done via SSH so I would like to focus on the command line and the filesystem. Thanks for any suggestions.

• Question about rights for svn

  I have a web application written in asp.net mvc. I have in MyApp.Web assembly the list of views and and the content files(images, scripts, css, and so on). In MyApp.WebBase I have the rest of fonctionality(Controllers, domain(entities, repositories, services)). Now the question is the following: I want to give to third party html coder access only to MyApp.Web source code in order he to be able to compile the application locally and see the results. By other hand the developer team shoul have access to full source code. The problem is that in order the html coder to be able to compile the application locally he need in his project the references to the MyApp.WebBase.dll Can anyone help me? Thanks.

• Can't read query string if default index file name is omitted?

  Is there an issue with IIS or ASP Classic where *Request.ServerVariables("QUERY_STRING")* returns blank if no default file name is given in the URL? On my local developer machine, I can do http://localhost/xslt/?opcs/abc which returns "opcs/abc". However, on our ancient web server, it returns nothing. I have to explicitly give it the default file name in the URL. Like so http://localhost/xslt/default.asp?opcs/abc While nothing too major, it is a little bit of a annoyance. One way I can maybe think of remidying the problem is have Javascript read the URL and return everything after the ?. Unfortunately, I do not know what version of IIS or ASP we are using. Thank you.

At work I'm a .net developer and we are starting to use DNN for some small projects around the office. • Can someone recommend a resource/site/book to improve problem solving skills

  I am a reasonably experienced developer (.NET, c#, asp.NET etc) but I'd like to hone my problem solving skills. I find that when I come up against a complex problem I sometimes implement a solution that I feel could have been better had I analyzed the problem in a different way. Ideally what I am looking for is a resource of some type that has 'practice problems and solutions' as I think my skills will only get better by practicing this more and adopting better practices. I hope my question is not to vague and I wont get upset with people answering with opinions etc.. thanks

• What would you like to see in an beginner's ASP.NET security book

  This is a shameless information gathering exercise for my own book. One of the talks I give in the community is an introduction to web site vulnerabilities. Usually during the talk I can see at least two members of the audience go very pale; and this is basic stuff, Cross Site Scripting, SQL Injection, Information Leakage, Cross Site Form Requests and so on. So, if you can think back to being one, as a beginning web developer (be it ASP.NET or not) what do you feel would be useful information about web security and how to develop securely? I will already be covering the OWASP Top Ten (And yes this means stackoverflow will be in the acknowledgements list if someone comes up with something I haven't thought of yet!) • BNRPersistence on the iPhone, and NSDocument

  I'm trying to get BNRPersistence running in an iPhone app, but I'm having a problem that I have no idea how to solve. Keep in mind I'm relatively new to iPhone dev. The problem is that BNRStoreDocument subclasses NSDocument, which exists in the Cocoa framework and thus isn't available on the iPhone. So obviously I'm getting compile errors that it can't find NSDocument. The developer of BNRPersistence states that it works on the iPhone, so I'm sure there a solution, I just don't what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is there a site that has a lot of ASP.net WebForms projects that are downloadable? Books seem to focus on narrow aspects of using Webforms, like session control, or using master pages, but I'm looking for examples of how a whole app comes together.   When i put an NSOpenglView in NSSplitView, a problem occurs while dragging splitter. The openGLView and SplitView are resizing asynchronously. i found a solution in apple mail list thread http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/samplecode/GLChildWindowDemo/Introduction/Intro.html and i found a solution with some carbon calls. but now i get link error (only in release mode). so i'v got two questions - is there any cocoa way to fix the splitter - gl problem? if no - how can i fix carbon linker errors in release mode?

• Why is Visual Studio 2008 slow with Firefox?

  I am using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express. I've made an ASP.NET MVC site which has 6 CSS files and 6 Javascript files in the HEAD element in the Site.Master file. When I do F5 or CTRL-F5 in Explorer or Opera, the site displays instantly. When I run my site in Firefox, it takes a SECOND for each CSS and each Javascript file on LOCALHOST, i.e. 12 seconds to load on localhost. What might I be able to change in the Firefox settings so it is as fast as Opera and Explorer? NEW INFO: Uninstalled Firebug completely, no yslow, no other add-ons. When I take out the CSS and Javascript files, then Firefox is as fast as the other browsers. What could be taking it so long on a local connection?

  I have a method with the following signature: foo (Sample sample, Aliquot aliquot) "foo" needs to alter a Sample object, either the first argument or from the second argument it can extract its Sample. For example: foo (Sample sample, Aliquot aliquot) { Sample out = null; if (sample != null) out = sample else out = aliquot.getSample() return out; } But that is so un-elegant, other than reading the API a developer does not know the reference of the first argument overrides the Sample of the second argument. Now, I could change "foo" to foo (SomeMagicalObject bar) where SomeMagicalObject is a tuple for Sample and Aliquot and holds some logic ... etc. But I am wondering, are there some patterns for this question?
