• Game Objects Talking To Each Other

  What is a good way of dealing with objects and having them talk to each other? Up until now all my games hobby/student have been small so this problem was generally solved in a rather ugly way, which lead to tight integration and circular dependencies. Which was fine for the size of projects I was doing. However my projects have been getting bigger in size and complexity and now I want to start re-using code, and making my head a simpler place. The main problem I have is generally along the lines of Player needs to know about the Map and so does the Enemy, this has usually descended into setting lots of pointers and having lots of dependencies, and this becomes a mess quickly. I have thought along the lines of a message style system. but I cant really see how this reduces the dependencies, as I would still be sending the pointers everywhere. Thanks. PS: I guess this has been discussed before, but I don't know what its called just the need I have.

  Hi, I'm looking at the buttons used on twitter's home page, specifically the big orange 'signup' button. I see it is defined like this: <p id="signup-btn"> <a id="signup_submit" href="/signup"> <span>Sign Up</span> </a> </p> are they just using css to give the orange button appearance (which may just be a jpg), and also using css to specify the roll-over appearance (another jpg), and finally a third state for mouse-click (another jpg) to give the impression of a real clickable button? If that's how it works, what should I look for to do the same thing? In my case I just want to make a button I guess, like: <div class='mybutton'>Hello!</div> .mybutton { bgcolor: red; bgcolor-mouseover: yellow; bgcolor-mousedown: green; } yeah something like that would be great, Thanks

  Greetings, I have a problem as follows: I have an SQL variable declared: DECLARE @myVariable nvarchar(max) a third party library set a value for this variable. To simplify, lets say that the value is as follows: SET @myVariable = 'Select ROWGUID from MySampleTable' Now, I want to execute the following query: SELECT ROWGUID FROM myTable WHERE ROWGUID in (exec sp_executesql @myVariable ) However, the above statement does not work because it returns an error telling me that I can't execute stored procedure in that way. I made a workaround and this is what I wrote: create table #temptable (ID uniqueidentifier null) if(@myVariable is not null AND @myVariable !='') insert into #temptable exec sp_executesql @myVariable SELECT ROWGUID FROM myTable WHERE ROWGUID in (select * from #temptable) DROP TABLE #temptable This works fine.However I don't think it is a good idea to use temporary table. How can I achieve the same result without necessity of creating temporary tables? I am using SQL SERVER 2005

There may even be two hash lookups on line 'B' -- one to get the int value and another to update it.

• jquery: .attr() fails for child element

  I'm going crazy staring at this. I need to change the attribute of an element, something which I have done many times before. But it fails. Now I can't even get jquery to show me the attribute that it has. Does it have to do with what is returned by find()? var c = new_photo_div.find('[class = photo]')[0]; alert(c); alert(new_photo_div.attr('class')); alert(c.attr('class')); The first alert correctly identifies the element: Object HTMLImageElement The second alert correctly gives me the class of new_photo_div. • Is there a way to get the current UIEvent being handled?

  I'm working in a class that is a delegate of another class; this other class is in a third-party library that I'd like to avoid changing if at all possible. The original class is handling a -touchesEnded event, and is delegating responsibility to me, but it doesn't pass the UIEvent itself to me. Is there a way to get a handle to the current event in progress? It's a double-tap handler, and all that is passed to me is the view being touched, and the point at which the touch occurred. I want to know exactly how many touches are involved in the event. Thanks! randy

• Can I use the emacs keyboard macro counter as a command prefix?

  I'm working on a project in emacs where I'd like to use a keyboard macro that changes slightly with each iteration. When I saw the keyboard macro counter in the manual, that looked like exactly what I needed - but as far as I can tell, that inserts an incrementing number into the current buffer. I want to use an incrementing number as a prefix to another command. For example, instead of inserting 3 into the buffer on the third execution of the macro, I'd like to be able to execute C-u 3 M-x my-command, followed by C-u 4 M-x my-command on the next iteration. Is there way to create a keyboard macro that does this? My specific task is "zipping" two blocks of text in the same buffer together, but even if there's an alternative way to do that specific thing, it'd be good to know the answer to the general question.

• Drupal - db_fetch_array returns NULL for every row

  I'm using Drupal's db_fetch_array to fetch rows from my db_query. However, every row returned is equal to NULL. Typing the query into PHP myadmin works, so I have no idea whats going on. db_num_rows returns the number of rows as well.   If I have a stored procedure that executes another stored procedure several times with different arguments, is it possible to have each of these calls commit independently of the others? In other words, if the first two executions of the nested procedure succeed, but the third one fails, is it possible to preserve the results of the first two executions (and not roll them back)? We are going to have people come from a particular site during a acquisition campaign and was wondering how I could conditionalize a certain section of my site to display a thank you message instead of the sign up form as they would have had the opportunity to fill this out before coming to my landing page. I have seen solutions like: $referal = mysql_real_escape_string($_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER']); I would like to know if this is the best way to get this to work??? - okay this is what i think might work. The third party website that is referring people to our landing page once the form on that site has been filled out can push into the record a hidden input value of "www.sample.com" or whatever... then I can have something check the for that particular value and fire off the conidtional. Does that even sound right?

  I would like to implement a way to trace every line of code in an application that is written for .net v4.0. An example would be. If I had the following function. private bool hasValue(string value) { if(string.isnullorempty(value) { return false; } else { return true; }} Then when the function is called I want detailed trace logs to contain something like this: Function called |Line 10 |Signature private bool hasValue(string value)|ValuesPassed hasValue("") Line Evaluated | Line 11 | if(string.isnullorempty(value) |ValuesPassed if(string.isnullorempty("") - evaluation returned true entered line 13 |signature return false|return action taken. This tracing can be done manually, but its a lot of work, and would dirty the code. Isn't there a way to get this level of tracing automatically with .net or 3rd party plugin? Thank you

  I'm working on displaying some text in an UIWebView on iOS. I'd like to get the content of the HTML element tapped by the user. If he taps on a paragraph for example, a popup shows the paragraph content. I'm using jQuery Mobile to achieve this. Here's what I'm doing : $('body').tap(function(e) { var tappedElement = $(e.target); alert(tappedElement.text()); }); It works for the first tap. The second tap no matter where it is, returns the same text. The event seems to be ok but the target property of the second tap is wrong. On the third tap all comes back to normal and so on ...   I have several lists that contain many of the same items and many duplicate items. I want to check which items in one list are not in the other list.   I cannot figure out what is wrong with the XPATH when trying to extract a value from a webpage table. • SQL compare entire rows

  In SQL server 2008 I have some huge tables (200-300+ cols). Every day we run a batch job generating a new table with timestamp appended to the name of the table. The the tables have no PK. I would like a generic way to compare 2 rows from two tables. Showing which cols having different values is sufficient, but showing the values would be perfect. Thanks a lot Thanks for the answers.   I'm considering using a third party hosting company to house an SVN repository. (I'm looking at Dreamhost but this may apply to other hosts as well.) The hosting company sets up the repository at http://svn.yourdomain.com/path. The problem I have noticed is that anyone could come along and export the files using: svn export http://svn.yourdomain.com/path Obviously I will need to export the files myself, but is there a way to secure this on a shared host so others don't have the ability to export this over http? Or is the real solution to manage your own SVN server? Thanks for your thoughts.

• Compilation failing - no #include - boost

  Hi, I'm trying to compile a third-party library, but g++ is complaining about the following line: typedef boost::shared_ptr<MessageConsumer> MessageConsumerPtr; The strange thing is, there is no #include directive in the file - and it is clearly supposed to be this way; there are about 60 files with the same (or very similar) issues. Clearly if there was an #include directive referencing the relevant boost header this would compile cleanly. My question is: how can I get g++ to somehow automagically find the relevant symbol (in all instances of this issue, it is a namespace that can't be found - usually std:: or boost::) by either automatically processing the relevant header (or some other mechanism).
