• Accessing data feed

  I have a Java program on my desktop which displays financial data gleaned from the web. It is a 3rd party application. What I would like to do is intercept the data before it goes to the Java application and record it into a flat file for the purpose of later data analysis. Is this at all possible? I imagine the data are available and are entering my computer through some port which the Java app picks up and then displays. Help appreciated. Thanks

• Scanner class is skipping lines

This code is in a loop and when the loop comes around the second, third whatever time I have it set to it skips the first title input. I need help please why is it skipping my title scanner input in the beginning? • Intent resolution in Android

  Hello community, If I want to create custom address book (which overrides my phone's default address book), and if I want it to be used by all applications, what should be my intent filter? Does Android allow me to do such a thing considering the fact that such a third-party app could potentially be malicious?! And, if I want to have yet another address book application, I suppose the second app also has same intent-filter, isn't it? How does the framework decide which app to pick if I click on Contacts button when making a call? In other words, how does the framework resolve intents in case there is a conflict between multiple intent-filters? I'm new to android, so please excuse me if this question is stupid. • In Android, does _id have to be present in any table created?

  I am trying to create a table to only has a foreign key, not a primary key. I am getting this error: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: column '_id' does not exist I read a tutorial that the primary key must be _id, with no explanation. And that is fine. But what if I do not want a primary key! What if I only want a foreign key. I am assuming this is where my problem lies. The schemas below are what I have. • sDesigning a database with flexible user profile

  I am working on a design where I can have flexible attributes for users and I am confused how to continue the design of the schema. I made a table where I kept system needed information: Table name: users id username password Now, I wish to create a profile table and have one to one relation where all the other attributes in profile table such as email, first name, last name, etc. My question is: is there a way to add a third table in which profiles will be flexible? In other words, if my clients need to create a new attribute he/she won't need any customization to the code.

• Comparing large strings in JavaScript with a hash

  I have a form with a textarea that can contain large amounts of content (say, articles for a blog) edited using one of a number of third party rich text editors. I'm trying to implement something like an autosave feature, which should submit the content through ajax if it's changed. However, I have to work around the fact that some of the editors I have as options don't support an "isdirty" flag, or an "onchange" event which I can use to see if the content has changed since the last save. So, as a workaround, what I'd like to do is keep a copy of the content in a variable (let's call it lastSaveContent), as of the last save, and compare it with the current text when the "autosave" function fires (on a timer) to see if it's different. However, I'm worried about how much memory that could take up with very large documents. Would it be more efficient to store some sort of hash in the lastSaveContent variable, instead of the entire string, and then compare the hash values? If so, can you recommend a good javascript library/jquery plugin that implements an appropriate hash for this requirement?

• What's the difference between starting a process from the dock vs. the command line on OS X

  I'm debugging an issue on OS X that only occurs when the application is started from the dock. It does not happen when the app is started from the command line. What is the difference between the two scenarios? The code I'm working with is a c++ based bundled plug-in being loaded in a third party app. I've attached to the process with GDB in both scenarios and the only difference I can see is that a couple of extra dylibs are loaded in the process when running from the command line and that the base address of my library is slightly different in the two scenarios. I've tried changing my linkage to i-prebind and/or -bind_at_load to no avail.

• replay in django + apcahce + mod_wsgi ??

  I have a simple django page that has a counter on it. I use Apache2 and mod_wsgi to serve it. First, when I enter this page, the counter shows 0, as it should. The second time when I enter the page the counter shows 1 - again, it is the right behavior. The problem begins now, cause when I enter this page the third time, I get 0 again. When I refresh it goes between 0, and 1, clearly using some cache or so. If I wait for some time and then try again, it will show 2, and 3, but will be stuck with those values, till this cache or whatever it is will be flushed, and then the counter continues. Does somebody knows how I can get it work right (the real scenario deals with getting data from the DB, but the problems with this strange cache are the same). BTW, I don't have any caching engine set in my django settings.

• Why is the GUID structure declared the way it is?

  In rpc.h, the GUID structure is declared as follows: typedef struct _GUID { DWORD Data1; WORD Data2; WORD Data3; BYTE Data[8]; } GUID; I understand Data1, Data2, and Data3. They define the first, second, and third sets of hex digits when writing out a GUID (XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXX). What I never understood was why the last 2 groups were declared together in the same byte array. Wouldn't this have made more sense (and been easier to code against)? typedef struct _GUID { DWORD Data1; WORD Data2; WORD Data3; WORD Data4; BYTE Data5[6]; } GUID; Anyone know why it is declared this way?

  Say you had the following two constructors: - (id)initWithTitle:(NSString *)title; - (id)initWithTitle:(NSString *)title page:(NSString *)page; The second constructor is no different from the first, except that it sets up the member variable "page". Since it basically has to do the same thing, is there a way to call the first one from the second one to reduce code duplication, or do you have to set up a third method to do the common tasks? • Multiple row insertion in a faster way

  Hi, I am using rails and I am trying to insert new rows into the table. The data comes from a text file and I created hash with one of the attribute as key. Then I find all the keys that are currently not in the table. Then I need to insert all of them into the table with all the attributes that I saved in hash. newvals.each{ |x| author = Author.create(:first => x, :second => hash[x][0], :third => hash[x][1]) author.save } This has lot of overhead as it makes an SQL update one at time. The newals array is usually quite big around the size of 20-30k. I know create can insert multiple objects at once, but I cant seem to figure out how. Is there any way to get this done. Thanks.

  Hello, I have a form which asks the user his or her date of birth. Its a drop down box since I use the select input type. The first drop down has Months, second has Days, the third has the Years. So the format should be Month(October), Day(25), Year(1990). In other words the months spell out the actual month and not simply the number representation of the month. However, I would like to save the Day and Year in their respective formats. How can I do this in phpMyAdmin? Should I use the DATE type? what should the value be? I just need to know how to correlate all of this in phpmyadmin, so I can save it properly. Thank you.

  Running an MVC2 site against IIS7 and would like to capture more detail of how users traverse the site - ideally to the point of being able to replay even the duration between mouse clicks - feedback of where people pause and/or backtrack. I could do this with flash but that's no longer an option. Now it's just IIS7 via asp.net f4. That should be enough IIS7 is supposed to be extensible enough that there'd be any number of 3rd party options for this sort of niche need. I'm willing to consider client-side .net components but this sure seems to be the responsibility of the server. [opps...does this belong on serverfault?] thx

• Number guessing game (3+- guessed result)

  I've been assigned a task to create a game that generates 4 digits and the user has to guess the digits one at a time to get the correct result. If the number is correct a Y is displayed and if not, a N. This was easy, now the next step was to implement another two responses. If the answer is too high, a H is displayed and too low, an N. Again, was easy - now the third is to use the same design as game 2 but if the number is 3 higher than a H is displayed and same if it's 3 lower than a L is displayed - otherwise an X is displayed. I can't figure out how to do this. Here's my test code for game 2 for just one of the digits - any help is appreciated. • compare date split across colums

  Greetings. I am querying tables from Microsoft SQL 2008 which have date split across 3 columns: day, month and year. Unfortunately, I do not have control over this because data is coming in to the database daily from a 3rd party source in that format. I need to add between to a where clause so user can pull records within a range. Would be easy enough if date was in a single column but finding it nearly impossible when its split across three columns. To display the date, I am doing a CAST( CAST(year as varchar(4)) + '-' + CAST(month as varchar(2)) + '-' + CAST(day as varchar(2)) as date) AS "date"` in a select. I tried to put it as a parameter for datediff function or just the regular between but get no results. Thanks for any help.

• Eclipse debug - line: not available

  I can't seem to find anything on google telling me why this might be and what the resolution is. I'm Stepping through third party code (that I have the source for) and would really like to see the current line being executed... Looking at javac compile flags, I see the -g:none flag. If this flag is set, would this be enough to explain why I'm not able to see line numbers? If so, why would someone do this, are there performance implications? Do I need to recompile the jar myself to attach the missing debug info (if possible)? Thanks!

• Error including errno.h

  Every time I try to compile a project that includes errno.h in linux, I get issues using the error codes. GCC spits out errors saying the error codes aren't declared and I get the same issue with 3rd party projects that are, of course, known to compile. I have the Linux headers for my kernel installed. Any suggestions as to what else it could be? edit: Snippet at error code: if ((res != 0) && (errno == EEXIST)) Snippet of includes: ... #include <dirent.h> #include <errno.h> #include <stdarg.h> ... as is with no ifdef edit: Well I'm convinced my system's Linux headers are hosed somehow... that, or I'm missing some environment vars.

• Is it possible to make a TListView search by the caption of a different column in Delphi?

  Hi, When you set the Caption of a TListItem it seems to always set the Text for the first column in the row. When you start typing in the ListView it will search & select the closest match based on the caption of the first column. I have a situation where I need the caption of the first row to be empty, but still need the search functionality to work as normal (in this case the data I would be searching for may be in the 2nd/3rd column). Is this possible without using any 3rd party controls?

  My task is to search for a string or a pattern in a list of documents that are very short (say 200 characters long). However, say there are 1 million documents of such time. What is the most efficient way to perform this search?. I was thinking of tokenizing each document and putting the words in hashtable with words as key and document number as value, there by creating a bag of words. Then perform the word search and retrieve the list of documents that contained this word. From what I can see is this operation will take O(n) operations. Is there any other way? may be without using hash-tables?. Also, is there a python library or third party package that can perform efficient searches?

Basic math: 949324-937796=11528. Numeric values are stored as number datatypes. What am I missing here?

• Is it possible to achieve string localization inside of a statically linked lib?

  I am working on building an SDK which will be built out as a statically linked library that third party applications can then drop in to their applications. Inside of this SDK, I was looking to be able to perform some "localization." Basically, I would like for the code in my SDK to be able to access some ".string" files to perform some string lookup and language translation capabilities. Then I could propagate these strings outward to implementing App layers through my exposed API's. Is this even possible? I thought it was but now that I have actually been trying, I am seriously having doubts.
