  • Windows move onto second monitor when I turn it on

    - by user1002379
I'm using a small monitor for my main display I also have an LCD TV hooked up through HDMI as my secondary display. The problem is whenever I turn on the TV most but usually not all of my currently running program windows jump to the secondary display. This is very annoying, because I don't like to keep my TV on unless I'm using it. So when I do turn it on I have to drag and drop each of the windows back on to my main display. I have played around with some Compiz settings to no avail please help.

  • when the page scroll to certain point, how to make a second fixed header appear

    - by MikeSm
I have a page that will be responsive and I also want to add a header that appears once the visitor scrolls for a bit. The header will supplant the main header in order to be visible as the user travels down the page. I think this was a convention that people have used, and I need some help, as i can't really code it from scratch. Has anyone seen examples or tutorials on this. I've looked but can't come up with it.

  • Hook Response.Cache to memcache

    - by dvr
Has anyone done this before? I have a 32 bit win 2003 server running 2.0 and have read the ms engineers' blog about min(60%, 1800mb) for cache limits and our site (asp.net 2.0 / 3.5) is caching alot. It throws system outofmemory exceptions when wp is around 1.3gb (unfortunately it is the 2.0 apps) and I would like to push alot over to memcache but worried that at the moment the site is efficient using response.cache as is (though memory is an issue). I want to move most items over to memcache and have concerns on a – how to do this (implementation of response.cache to read/write from memcache) and b – what will performance be like? Before I commit to doing this and possibly spending a few days running tests I would like to hear from you if this has been done already and get some feedback. (and please don’t tell me to buy a x64 machine – I have already requested this!), by the way I ran a test requesting a single image 1000 times and response.cache was over 50% quicker than using application cache. Does response.cache bypass the page lifecycle?

  • Should entry level programmers be able to answer FizzBuzz?

    - by Bryan Rowe
When interviewing entry level developers, I have used the FizzBuzz question as a type of acid test. Generally, I ask for a solution in pseudo-code or any language of their choice. If someone can't answer this question -- or get reasonably close, the interview generally ends shortly thereafter and we don't progress to more interesting code questions. In your opinion, is it fair/appropriate/accurate to filter entry-level staff in this manner? Should the average four year college graduate have a reasonable enough foundation to be able to throw up a pseudo-code solution of FizzBuzz?

  • Cache Wrapper with expressions

    - by Fujiy

My first idea is something like this: public static TResult Cachear<TResult>(this Cache cache, Expression<Func<TResult>> funcao) { string chave = funcao.ToString(); if (!(cache[chave] is TResult)) { cache[chave] = funcao.Compile()(); } return (TResult)cache[chave]; } Is the best way? • CloudFront with Custom Origin and ELB

    - by kmfk
We are using CloudFront for our static assets but also wanted to allow for Gzip. We set up a new distribution with a custom origin pointing back to our application servers which are behind a elastic load balancer. We manually keep the files in sync across the cluster and update them when we publish. However, with this set up, we get nothing but Miss and RefreshHits from CloudFront, which so far has defeated the purpose. Is there any additional settings in order to use an ELB as your custom origin? In the docs, it references this as a viable solution. It appears when we point the distribution to a single server in our production cluster, cloudfront properly caches our assets. Is it possible that the sticky sessions cookie and the subsequent header that gets added by it could be an issue? Cache-Control: no-cache="set-cookie" //Added by load balancer Any ideas? FYI - currently, we have our custom origin pointing to a single EC2 instance, so caching is working correctly - in case you try to curl the file below. Example headers: curl -I http://static.quick-cdn.com/css/9850999.css HTTP/1.0 200 OK Accept-Ranges: bytes Cache-Control: max-age=3700 Cache-Control: no-cache="set-cookie" Content-Length: 23038 Content-Type: text/css Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2012 23:03:52 GMT Last-Modified: Thu, 12 Apr 2012 23:00:14 GMT Server: Apache/2.2.17 (Ubuntu) Vary: Accept-Encoding X-Cache: RefreshHit from cloudfront X-Amz-Cf-Id: K_q7Zy3_jdzlEJ85ukELVtdx1GmuXqApAbZZ7G0fPt0mxRMqPKX5pQ==,RzJmPku-rEIO9WlvuSoKa8hiAaR3dLk5KC4cQMWWrf_MDhmjWe8n6A== Via: 1.0 28c34f9fbf559a21ee16594849e4fc9c.cloudfront.net (CloudFront) Connection: close

  • Empty $upstream_http_location variable if response was cached

    - by Ivaldi
    I would like to cache the response of an redirect. (Cache the request to some site which returns a redirect and cache the second request which returns the actual content.) So far my config looks like this: location = /proxy { error_page 301 302 307 = @redir; resolver 8.8.8.8; proxy_pass $arg_url; proxy_intercept_errors on; proxy_cache pcache; proxy_cache_key $arg_url; proxy_cache_valid 200 301 302 307 1d; proxy_cache_min_uses 1; proxy_ignore_client_abort on; proxy_ignore_headers Set-Cookie Expires Cache-Control; } location @redir { resolver 8.8.8.8; # we need to assign $upstream_http_location to another var in order to use it with proxy_pass set $target $upstream_http_location; proxy_pass $target; proxy_cache predirects; proxy_cache_key $upstream_http_location; proxy_cache_valid 200 301 302 307 1d; proxy_cache_min_uses 1; proxy_ignore_headers Set-Cookie Expires Cache-Control; } It works for the first request or without the 30x codes for proxy_cache_valid in the /proxy part, but $target and $upstream_http_location are empty, if the response was cached. Is there a nice solution to cache both requests? Thanks!

  • How to Use Offline Files in Windows to Cache Your Networked Files Offline

    - by Taylor Gibb
The problem with storing all your files on a file server or networked machine is that when you leave the network, how are you going to access your files? Instead of using a VPN or Dropbox, you can use the Offline Files feature built into Windows. Note: You should probably not be using this guide to make your 2 terabyte movie collection available offline—while it may work, it is not recommended just because the Offline Files feature isn’t made for storing massive amounts of data offline. • How to handle a player's level and its consequent privileges?

    - by Songo
I'm building a game similar to Mafia Wars where a player can do tasks for his gang and gain experience and thus advancing his level. The game is built using PHP and a Mysql database. In the game I want to limit the resources allowed to player based on his level. For example: ________| (Max gold) | (Max army size) | (Max moves) | ... Level 1 | 1000 | 100 | 10 | ... Level 2 | 1500 | 200 | 20 | ... Level 3 | 3000 | 300 | 25 | ... . . . In addition certain features of the game won't be allowed until a certain level is reached such as players under Level 10 can't trade in the game market, players under Level 20 can't create alliances,...etc. The way I have modeled it is by implementing a very loooong ACL (Access Control List) with about 100 entries (an entry for each level). However, I think there may be a simpler approach to this seeing that this feature have been implemented in many games before.

  • Algorithm for dynamically calculating a level based on experience points?

    - by George
One of the struggles I've always had in game development is deciding how to implement experience points attributed to gaining a level. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to gaining a level in many of the games I've played, so I assume they have a static dictionary table which contains experience points vs. the level. e.g. Experience Level 0 1 100 2 175 3 280 4 800 5 ...There isn't a rhyme or reason why 280 points is equal to level 4, it just is. I'm not sure how those levels are decided, but it certainly wouldn't be dynamic. I've also thought about the possibility of exponential levels, as not to have to keep a separate lookup table, e.g. Experience Level 0 1 100 2 200 3 400 4 800 5 1600 6 3200 7 6400 8 ...but that seems like it would grow out of control rather quickly, as towards the upper levels, the enemies in the game would have to provide a whopping amount of experience to level -- and that would be to difficult to control. Leveling would become an impossible task. Does anyone have any pointers, or methods they use to decide how to level a character based on experience? I want to be fair in leveling and I want to stay ahead of the players as not to worry about constantly adding new experience/level lookups.

  • Microsoft gives you your cache back

    - by Dave Ballantyne
The system works and its called Microsoft Connect , who would of thought it :) Following on from my previous blog post MicroSoft – Follow best practices, on the connect item , the followup stated that changes had been made in 2008.  I genuinely thought that a change would take an age to trickle through to the customer. But after firing up 2008R2 RTM and examining the SqlAgent traffic with profiler , where before i would see non-parameterized sql, I now see RPC calls.    Excellent , i get my cache back.

  • .bash_history and .cache

    - by John Isaacks
I have a user who's home directory is a Mercurial repository. Mercurial notified me that there were 2 new unversioned files in my repository. .bash_history and .cache/motd.legal-displayed. I assume bash_history is the history of bash commands for my user. I have no idea what the other is. I don't want these files to be versioned by Mercurial, are they safe to just delete, or will they come back, or mess something up? Can they be moved to somewhere else? Or do I have to add them to my .hgignore file?

  • Random Cache Expiry

    - by mahemoff
I've been experimenting with random cache expiry times to avoid situations where an individual request forces multiple things to update at once. For example, a web page might include five different components. If each is set to time out in 30 minutes, the user will have a long wait time every 30 minutes. So instead, you set them all to a random time between 15 and 45 minutes to make it likely at most only one component will reload for any given page load. I'm trying to find any research or guidelines on this topic, e.g. optimal variance parameters. I do recall seeing one article about how Google (?) uses this technique, but can't locate it, and there doesn't seem to be much written about the topic.

  • Implementing cache system in Java Web Application

    - by TGM
I worked with JPA (Eclipselink implementation) and Hibernate. As I understand these two have great caching systems. I am interested in caching in a Web application and in order to better understand the process I'm trying to implement something on my own. Sadly, I cannot find any in depth documentation about this subject. I'm interested in things like high scalability, sharing memory on different machines and other important theoretical matters. Is there any tutorial or open project I could check out? Thank you! *LE: * I want to cache DB information in POJOs just like JPA or Eclipselink

  • Hibernate database integrity with multiple java applications

    - by Austen
We have 2 java web apps both are read/write and 3 standalone java read/write applications (one loads questions via email, one processes an xml feed, one sends email to subscribers) all use hibernate and share a common code base. The problem we have recently come across is that questions loaded via email sometimes overwrite questions created in one of the web apps. We originally thought this to be a caching issue. We've tried turning off the second level cache, but this doesn't make a difference. We are not explicitly opening and closing sessions, but rather let hibernate manage them via Util.getSessionFactory().getCurrentSession(), which thinking about it, may actually be the issue. We'd rather not setup a clustered 2nd level cache at this stage as this creates another layer of complexity and we're more than happy with the level of performance we get from the app as a whole. So does implementing a open-session-in-view pattern in the web apps and manually managing the sessions in the standalone apps sound like it would fix this? Or any other suggestions/ideas please? <property name="hibernate.transaction.factory_class">org.hibernate.transaction.JDBCTransactionFactory</property> <property name="hibernate.current_session_context_class">thread</property> <property name="hibernate.cache.use_second_level_cache">false</property>

  • How to create managed properties at site collection level in SharePoint2013

    - by ybbest
    In SharePoint2013, you can create managed properties at site collection. Today, I’d like to show you how to do so through PowerShell. 1. Define your managed properties and crawled properties and managed property Type in an external csv file. PowerShell script will read this file and create the managed and the mapping. 2. As you can see I also defined variant Type, this is because you need the variant type to create the crawled property. In order to have the crawled properties, you need to do a full crawl and also make sure you have data populated for your custom column. However, if you do not want to a full crawl to create those crawled properties, you can create them yourself by using the PowerShell; however you need to make sure the crawled properties you created have the same name if created by a full crawl. Managed properties type: Text = 1 Integer = 2 Decimal = 3 DateTime = 4 YesNo = 5 Binary = 6 Variant Type: Text = 31 Integer = 20 Decimal = 5 DateTime = 64 YesNo = 11 3. You can use the following script to create your managed properties at site collection level, the differences for creating managed property at site collection level is to pass in the site collection id. param( [string] $siteUrl="http://SP2013/", [string] $searchAppName = "Search Service Application", $ManagedPropertiesList=(IMPORT-CSV ".\ManagedProperties.csv") ) Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue $searchapp = $null function AppendLog { param ([string] $msg, [string] $msgColor) $currentDateTime = Get-Date $msg = $msg + " --- " + $currentDateTime if (!($logOnly -eq $True)) { # write to console Write-Host -f $msgColor $msg } # write to log file Add-Content $logFilePath $msg } $scriptPath = Split-Path $myInvocation.MyCommand.Path $logFilePath = $scriptPath + "\CreateManagedProperties_Log.txt" function CreateRefiner {param ([string] $crawledName, [string] $managedPropertyName, [Int32] $variantType, [Int32] $managedPropertyType,[System.GUID] $siteID) $cat = Get-SPEnterpriseSearchMetadataCategory –Identity SharePoint -SearchApplication $searchapp $crawledproperty = Get-SPEnterpriseSearchMetadataCrawledProperty -Name $crawledName -SearchApplication $searchapp -SiteCollection $siteID if($crawledproperty -eq $null) { Write-Host AppendLog "Creating Crawled Property for $managedPropertyName" Yellow $crawledproperty = New-SPEnterpriseSearchMetadataCrawledProperty -SearchApplication $searchapp -VariantType $variantType -SiteCollection $siteID -Category $cat -PropSet "00130329-0000-0130-c000-000000131346" -Name $crawledName -IsNameEnum $false } $managedproperty = Get-SPEnterpriseSearchMetadataManagedProperty -Identity $managedPropertyName -SearchApplication $searchapp -SiteCollection $siteID -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue if($managedproperty -eq $null) { Write-Host AppendLog "Creating Managed Property for $managedPropertyName" Yellow $managedproperty = New-SPEnterpriseSearchMetadataManagedProperty -Name $managedPropertyName -Type $managedPropertyType -SiteCollection $siteID -SearchApplication $searchapp -Queryable:$true -Retrievable:$true -FullTextQueriable:$true -RemoveDuplicates:$false -RespectPriority:$true -IncludeInMd5:$true } $mappedProperty = $crawledproperty.GetMappedManagedProperties() | ?{$_.Name -eq $managedProperty.Name } if($mappedProperty -eq $null) { Write-Host AppendLog "Creating Crawled -> Managed Property mapping for $managedPropertyName" Yellow New-SPEnterpriseSearchMetadataMapping -CrawledProperty $crawledproperty -ManagedProperty $managedproperty -SearchApplication $searchapp -SiteCollection $siteID } $mappedProperty = $crawledproperty.GetMappedManagedProperties() | ?{$_.Name -eq $managedProperty.Name } #Get-FASTSearchMetadataCrawledPropertyMapping -ManagedProperty $managedproperty } $searchapp = Get-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication $searchAppName $site= Get-SPSite $siteUrl $siteId=$site.id Write-Host "Start creating Managed properties" $i = 1 FOREACH ($property in $ManagedPropertiesList) { $propertyName=$property.managedPropertyName $crawledName=$property.crawledName $managedPropertyType=$property.managedPropertyType $variantType=$property.variantType Write-Host $managedPropertyType Write-Host "Processing managed property $propertyName $($i)..." $i++ CreateRefiner $crawledName $propertyName $variantType $managedPropertyType $siteId Write-Host "Managed property created " $propertyName } Key Concepts Crawled Properties: Crawled properties are discovered by the search index service component when crawling content.   • Which isolation level should I use for the following insert-if-not-present transaction?

    - by Steve Guidi
I've written a linq-to-sql program that essentially performs an ETL task, and I've noticed many places where parallelization will improve its performance. However, I'm concerned about preventing uniquness constraint violations when two threads perform the following task (psuedo code). Record CreateRecord(string recordText) { using (MyDataContext database = GetDatabase()) { Record existingRecord = database.MyTable.FirstOrDefault(record.KeyPredicate()); if(existingRecord == null) { existingRecord = CreateRecord(recordText); database.MyTable.InsertOnSubmit(existingRecord); } database.SubmitChanges(); return existingRecord; } } In general, this code executes a SELECT statement to test for record existance, followed by an INSERT statement if the record doesn't exist. It is encapsulated by an implicit transaction. When two threads run this code for the same instance of recordText, I want to prevent them from simultaneously determining that the record doesn't exist, thereby both attempting to create the same record. An isolation level and explicit transaction will work well, except I'm not certain which isolation level I should use -- Serializable should work, but seems too strict. Is there a better choice?

  • Modern programming language with intuitive concurrent programming abstractions

    - by faif
I am interested in learning concurrent programming, focusing on the application/user level (not system programming). I am looking for a modern high level programming language that provides intuitive abstractions for writing concurrent applications. I want to focus on languages that increase productivity and hide the complexity of concurrent programming. To give some examples, I don't consider a good option writing multithreaded code in C, C++, or Java because IMHO my productivity is reduced and their programming model is not intuitive. On the other hand, languages that increase productivity and offer more intuitive abstractions such as Python and the multiprocessing module, Erlang, Clojure, Scala, etc. would be good options. What would you recommend based on your experience and why?

  • XNA Level Select Menu

    - by user29901
    I'll try to explain this the best I can. I'm trying to create a level select menu for a game I'm making. The menu is basically a group of blocks numbered 1-16, similar to something like the Angry Birds menu. What I've done is created a cursor, basically just an outline to surround a block, that the user can move to select what level they want to play. What I want it do is move from block to block instead of simply moving around on the X and Y axes as it does now. So my question is, how can I get the cursor (highLight in the below code) to move from block to block(destinationRectangle1 etc. in the code)? /// Field for the "cursor" Vector2 highLightPos = new Vector2(400, 200); ///This is the Update code KeyboardState keyBoardState = Keyboard.GetState(); if (keyBoardState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Up)) highLightPos.Y--; if (keyBoardState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Down)) highLightPos.Y++; if (keyBoardState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Right)) highLightPos.X++; if (keyBoardState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Left)) highLightPos.X--; /// This is the draw code SpriteBatch spriteBatch = ScreenManager.SpriteBatch; Rectangle screenRectangle = new Rectangle(0, 0, 1280, 720); Rectangle destinationRectangle1 = new Rectangle(400, 200, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle1 = new Rectangle(0, 0, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle2 = new Rectangle(500, 200, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle2 = new Rectangle(64, 0, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle3 = new Rectangle(600, 200, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle3 = new Rectangle(128, 0, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle4 = new Rectangle(700, 200, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle4 = new Rectangle(192, 0, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle5 = new Rectangle(800, 200, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle5 = new Rectangle(256, 0, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle6 = new Rectangle(400, 300, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle6 = new Rectangle(320, 0, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle7 = new Rectangle(500, 300, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle7 = new Rectangle(384, 0, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle8 = new Rectangle(600, 300, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle8 = new Rectangle(448, 0, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle9 = new Rectangle(700, 300, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle9 = new Rectangle(0, 64, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle10 = new Rectangle(800, 300, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle10 = new Rectangle(64, 64, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle11 = new Rectangle(400, 400, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle11 = new Rectangle(128, 64, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle12 = new Rectangle(500, 400, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle12 = new Rectangle(192, 64, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle13 = new Rectangle(600, 400, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle13 = new Rectangle(256, 64, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle14 = new Rectangle(700, 400, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle14 = new Rectangle(320, 64, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle15 = new Rectangle(800, 400, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle15 = new Rectangle(384, 64, 64, 64); Rectangle destinationRectangle16 = new Rectangle(600, 500, 64, 64); Rectangle frameRectangle16 = new Rectangle(448, 64, 64, 64); spriteBatch.Begin(); spriteBatch.Draw(forestBG, screenRectangle, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(highLight, highLightPos, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle1, frameRectangle1, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle2, frameRectangle2, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle3, frameRectangle3, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle4, frameRectangle4, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle5, frameRectangle5, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle6, frameRectangle6, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle7, frameRectangle7, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle8, frameRectangle8, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle9, frameRectangle9, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle10, frameRectangle10, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle11, frameRectangle11, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle12, frameRectangle12, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle13, frameRectangle13, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle14, frameRectangle14, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle15, frameRectangle15, Color.White); spriteBatch.Draw(levelSelectTiles, destinationRectangle16, frameRectangle16, Color.White); spriteBatch.End(); PS, I'm aware that this code is probably inefficient, cumbersome or that there's a better way to draw parts of a tile sheet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
