  • How do I log back into a Windows Server 2003 guest OS after Hyper-V integration services installs and breaks my domain logins?

    After installing Hyper-V integration services, I appear to have a problem with logging in to my Windows Server 2003 virtual machine. Incorrect passwords and logins give the usual error message, but a correct login/password gives me this message: Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found. Please try again later. If this message continues to appear, contact your system administrator for assistance. Nothing pleases me more than Microsoft telling me (the ersatz system administrator) to contact my system administrator for help, when I suspect that I'm hooped. The virtual machine has a valid network connection, and has decided to invalidate all my previous logins on this account, so I can't log in and remotely fix anything, and I can't remotely connect to it from outside either. This appears to be a catch 22. Unfortunately I don't know any non-domain local logins for this virtual machine, so I suspect I am basically hooped, or that I need ophcrack. is there any alternative to ophcrack? Second and related question; I used Disk2VHD to do the conversion, and I could log in fine several times, until after the Hyper-V integration services were installed, then suddenly this happens and I can't log in now - was there something I did wrong? I can't get networking working inside the VM BEFORE I install integration services, and at the very moment that integration services is being installed, I'm getting locked out like this. I probably should always know the local login of any machine I'm upgrading so I don't get stuck like this in the future.... great. Now I am reminded again of this.

  • Exchange 2003 -- Mailbox Management not deleting ALL messages aged 30 days or older...

    I've recently created a Mailbox Management task within Exchange 2003 that, every night, looks at the contents of the Deleted Items within a particular mailbox and deletes mail that's 30 days or older. The scheduled task ran on its own last night and I have confirmed that messages within the right mailbox and the right folder were, in fact, processed. Many mails were deleted ... but not never email older than 30 days. In fact, the choice seems kinda random. Last night 3/10/2010 was the 30 day watermark. Mails were deleted from 3/10/2010, sure enough, but not all of them. Mails older than 3/10/2010 were deleted as well, but, again, not all of them. The only criteria I have on the management -- aside from the single mailbox and single folder scopes -- is the age criteria. The size criteria is set to Any, meaning I don't care about the size. I care about the age. It's made me wonder where there is some sort of limit on how many mails can be processed? The schedule is set for 12am and 1am every night. Any hints appreciated.

    System: Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Scenario: NTDS db is corrupt and all attempts to fix with esentutl fail. Ran chkdsk which seemed to repair disk error and give access to the ntds.dit file but still esentutl fails. (Attached the drive to a different server to run the esentutl) Error: Access to source database '[path to copy of]/ntds.dit' failed with Jet error -1022. Operation terminated with error -1022 (JET_errDiskIO, Disk IO error) after 0.170 seconds. This error occurs on any disk I cpoy the files to including original location in C:\WINDOWS\NTDS\ Now enter the "Stupid!" and "what was I thinking!?" part (must be the late hour...) Stupid: No updated backup - after using a backup I get a network password error in the lsass error. what was I thinking!?: Started the install repair from the original CD but the install fails since the AD fails to start. Now I cant boot into any mode (safe mode, AD restore etc) nor complete the repair install. I would really like to avoid a fresh install since I have the Exchange server on this DC and would rather migrate to a new server than have to start from scratch. Thanks!

    Given a text file containing and outline with tabs to indent each level, I would like to import this into a Word 2007 document so that the each indentation level is converted to a H1, H2, etc heading level. I tried copy pasting the text into the outline view and opening the text file via File, Open. Both did not give the expected result.   • Move to next selection in Word 2007

    When I have multiple selections in a Word 2007 document, such as after selecting all instances of a style, how can I move from one selection to the next? When you issue the select all instances command, the view snaps to the next instance of the style, but how can I find the other instances? Any cursor key will unselect everything. Using the mouse to scroll through the document is not feasible for large documents, plus the selection could be a single character -- very easy to miss!

  • Word 2007 - Pasted Text Not Spellchecked??

    My Word 2007 spell-check seems to work fine, except that when I paste in text from somewhere else, it won't detect any misspellings in that pasted text...no matter what I try. If it makes any difference, when I paste in text, the formatting is preserved (size color etc). I've tried doing a past-special and trying the different options there, but it's still bringing the formatting over. Any ideas on what to try?

  • Unable to load type error in ASP.NET 4 application on Windows Server 2003 / IIS6 -- only happens after first worker process recycle

    I'm running an ASP.NET 4.0 web application on IIS6 (Windows Server 2003 x64). This app is one of many running on this server under the Default Web Site -- but is alone on it's own application pool because the other sites are all running ASP.NET 2.0 still. When I deploy my application, it works just fine until the application pool recycles or kills its worker process (by default 2 hours or 20 minutes with no activity). After this, I get the error: "Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. Refreshing the page, recycling the application pool, and iisreset do nothing. But, I can bring the site back online again for a little while by simply redeploying it.   • Joining Windows 7 Professional to a Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 domain fails.

    I have a windows 7 professional (spanish) laptop trying to join a Windows Server 2003 (english) domain. It detect correctly the SRV record, finding the proper domain controller, but then the join fails with the error message (snippet, because the error is in spanish) An Active Directory Domain Controller for This Domain Could Not be Contacted The DNS is correctly set, and client can ping by name and IP the server, the server can ping the client by IP. I've tested with the FW down to no avail. A host of other XP Pro clients are connected to the domain. I've restarted Net Logon and checked that Windows Time is up. Also the times are in sync between the server and the client. I'll put below diagnostics output. I'm wondering if there's anything special to be done on either the server or the client to have a Win 7 Pro join a 2k3 R2 domain.   • Why does this service refuse to start on Windows server 2003?

    We have a Windows 2003 server with Cebos MQ1 (ver. 7 and ver. GRI) products installed that have been operational for years. After installing Microsoft 2010 C++ Redistributable package needed for other development, the MQ1 GRI service now fails to start. Event logs showed that two additional updates (.NET4 and the 2010 C++ Redistributable SP2) where installed by the redistributable as well. As soon as we discovered the MQ1 service was not starting properly, we removed these three installed packages. However the service still does not start; the dialog that pops up states 'The service started then stopped. '. Event logs when we attempt to start the service show nothing; IE: No errors, crashes, failures, or other information related to this service. Executing the MQ1Serv.exe directly specifies an issue of 'Missing command line operation, must specify install, uninstall and company abbreviation.' sc query MQ1Service(GRI) shows a clean exit for the Win32ExitCode of 0x0. Attempting to reinstall the client or server software gives an error of 'The procedure entry point ReInitializeCriticalSection could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.' at the 'Registering Libraries' stage. At this point, further research has stated that the required function is in URL.dll and to verify the library is not corrupted. Running an sfc /scannow on the server has replaced a few DLLS; including the URL.DLL to versions from 2005. This actually broke other applications which required a reinstall (one of them being IE 7). After reinstall and updates, url.dll version is 7.0.5730.13 (2009) and Kernel32.dll is version 5.2.3790.4480 (2009). The MQ1 GRI service still will not start, specifying the same error as previous 'Service started then stopped'. Running a disassembler on Kernel32.dll and Url.dll show no functions named ReinitializeCriticalSection. Attempting the reinstall of the MQ1 client and server as well as starting the service again, fails once more. However, setting the compatibility mode on the MQ1 client install exe to 'Windows 95' actually gets the program to install. Setting the compatibility mode on the MQ1 server service does not enable it to start. I have been researching this problem for nearly a week and besides the advice to scan and replace url.dll, have come to no successful conclusions. This service was operational prior to the 2010 C++ install, without any additional parameters or settings. After removing the C++ install and all servicepacks/updates it installed silently, still does not correct the issue of the MQ1 GRI service not starting. Q: Has anyone else run into this or similar issue while attempting to get a service initialized? What have I overlooked or what else can I try in order to get this service started??

    I have a script, testforeground.php, that kicks off a background script, testbackground.php, then returns while the background script continues to run until it's finished. Both the foreground and background scripts write to the output file correctly when I run the foreground script from the command line using php-cgi: C:\>php-cgi testforeground.php The above command starts a php-cgi.exe process, then a php-win.exe process, then closes the php-cgi.exe almost immediately, while the php-win.exe continues until it's finished.   • "Service Unavailable" when browsing to static HTML page in non-application IIS website on Windows 2003 (possibly SharePoint WSS 2.0 related?)

    Background: My client has an old Pentium III Windows 2003 server whose 16/36 GB disks are dying. On it he has a database-driven web site and email application that needs further customization by a developer (me). First we need to get it working on the new server. The original developer is no longer available to provide a system setup guide. So my client got a tech who imaged the old drives over to the new server and managed to get it booting. But the IIS-driven site no longer works. In fact it seems that IIS itself does not work. Problem: Service Unavailable when attempting to browse from the server itself to the URL for a local Web Site called test which I setup in IIS to serve a single static index.htm file. This I did to isolate the problem, and eliminate the client's application from the equation. The site is setup on port 80 with the host header "test.myclientsdomain.com", and I used the etc\hosts file to point that host at the local IP. I know the host entry took effect because I can ping it. When doing an iisreset, I get: Attempting start... Restart attempt failed. IIS Admin Service or a service dependent on IIS Admin is not active. It most likely failed to start, which may mean that it's disabled. Despite this message, the services all stay in the Started state. The only relevant System event logs I found are: Event Type: Error Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1002 Date: 11/4/2012 Time: 11:04:47 PM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA1 Description: Application pool 'DefaultAppPool' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool. Event Type: Error Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1039 Date: 11/4/2012 Time: 11:13:12 PM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA1 Description: A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' reported a failure. The process id was '5636'. The data field contains the error number. Data: 0000: 7e 00 07 80 ~.. And one Application event log: Event Type: Error Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Event Category: None Event ID: 1000 Date: 11/4/2012 Time: 11:34:04 PM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA1 Description: #50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_Config on ALPHA2\SharePoint. Check the database connection information and make sure that the database server is running. That last log tells me that the tech may have initially tried to have both the old and the new server running, by renaming the new server from ALPHA1 to ALPHA2. And perhaps SharePoint grabbed onto that change, and now can't tell that the machine name has been switched back to the old ALPHA1. But why would SharePoint interfere with a static IIS web site serving a single HTML file? The test site is not even within an Application pool (I clicked the Remove button.) What I have tried/eliminated: No relevant services seem to be disabled: IIS Admin, WWW Publishing, Sharepoint Timer Giving Full Control to All Users/Everyone on the c:\inetpub\test folder serving my test site. I can connect to and query the local SharePoint config database (ALPHA1\SHAREPOINT\STS_CONFIG) from SSMS. But when I try to do stsadm -o setconfigdb -connect -databaseserver ALPHA1\SHAREPOINT it tells me The SharePoint admininstration port does not exist. Please use stsadm.exe to create it. And when I do that, using the port 9487 specified in the IIS SharePoint Admin site config, it tells me the port is already in use. Needless to say, simply browsing to the admin site gives me a similar error about being unable to reach the config database. I didn't want to go further down the SharePoint path as it may be completed unrelated to my IIS issue, and I don't even know yet if SharePoint is required for this application to work. The app itself is ASP.Net/C#/Silverlight and a little MS Word integration (maybe that's where the SharePoint stuff comes in.)

  • Find/Replace Paragraph End (^13) in Microsoft Word 2007 Merges Paragraphs

    I need to replace a target at the beginning of lines with something else. Without wildcards, I can say to replace "^pTarget" with "^pReplacement". With wildcards enabled, I use replace "^13Target" with "^13Replacement". The replacement is successful except that the paragraph is now merged with the previous one in a strange way: The end-paragraph mark is still in place and the paragraph begins on a new line, but Triple clicking to select paragraph selects both the changed paragraph and the one above In a macro, starting in the paragraph above and extending the selection to the end of paragraph causes both paragraphs to be selected. Inter-paragraph spacing disappears between the changed paragraph and the one above. In essence, the paragraph boundary has been removed although the end-paragraph mark is still shown. To duplicate this problem, make a new document Line 1 Line 2 Line 3 (separate paragraphs). Find and replace (with wildcards on) "^13" with "^13". If your result is the same as mine, you will see the problems listed above. I can work around this in the usual way of replacing ^p with something else first, e.g. "^p" = "$", then "$target" = "$replacement", but I'm curious about what's going on. (This is using Word 2007 on Windows 7) I don't know Word XML, but the XML output seems to correspond with the above. Replacing ^13 with ^13 moves the paragraphs together in almost the same way as replacing end-paragraph with end-line (^p = ^l).   • Exchange 2003 mail non-delivery (NDR), spam activity? events 7002 & 7004

    Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server SP2 Exchange Version 6.5 (Build 7638.2: Service Pack 2) This network has been neglected and has been having email problems for years and was on many blacklists. I was called in after the server eventually crashed... I got the server back up and running, but email problems persist. Outgoing mail delivery is sporadic. Sometimes the mail goes through, sometimes a delayed delivery report is generated after a day or more, and sometimes it seems to go through, but the recipient never receives it. Not sure if spammers are successfully using the server as a relay (see event entries below after turning on maximum SMTP logging)... User PCs infected with viruses and server was blacklisted on many sites (I used mxtoolbox.com) I have cleaned all the PCs and changed all passwords (including administrator) I have requested removal from all of the blacklists - most have removed the listing, some take more time. I have setup rDNS pointer records with the ISP (Comcast) - that was one reason for some of the blacklistings. I have tested that it's not an open relay using telnet as described here: www.amset.info/exchange/smtp-openrelay.asp I followed the advise of a Spamhaus & Microsoft article to enable maximum SMTP logging. http://www.spamhaus.org/faq/answers.lasso?section=isp%20spam%20issues#320 which directed me to Microsoft KB article 895853, specifically, the part 2/3 down titled: "If mail relay occurs from an account on an Exchange computer that is not configured as an open relay" . The Application Event Log is filling with this type of activity (Event ID 7002, 7002 & 3018 errors): Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeTransport Event Category: SMTP Protocol Event ID: 7004 Date: 1/18/2011 Time: 7:33:29 AM User: N/A Computer: SERVER Description: This is an SMTP protocol error log for virtual server ID 1, connection #621.   • C++ Style Comments for Microsoft Word 2008?

    Hello, I would like to be able use some sort of C++ style commenting for Microsoft Word. E.g. If I have // line of text the entire line should be a comment and should appear in a different colour. Same goes for: /* text block */ I would want text block to be in a different colour than my main text. Another feature that would be nice but not necessary for me to have is some sort of a way to quickly strip all the comments. I have no idea how this could be done, if possible. Any ideas? Thanks.
