• Alot of Pirated Material on Someone's Website - What Can Be Done?

  Hi, We've developed our website for over 10 years. Recently a website in China has begun to pirate our images and product descriptions (they are showing "new" March offerings). Nearly all of the items they "offer" are ours. Their whois leads to an outfit in France which by chance also hosts a website for Steroids, and both the Steroid and the pirate site share an 800 phone number (coincidence??). The pirate site lists "their" products as being available in mass quantities, though very often the actual product is one-of-a-kind. The images they've stolen appear in google searches alongside our own!! Clicking on any product at the pirate site leads to nowhere. Calls to the 800 number lead to a recorded answer. • Assemble static site from templates? (don't want to reinvent the wheel)

  I have a site that is 100% static content (no php, just some javascript). There's several "blocks" like the header, menu, footer, etc. that are the same on each page. Rather than do a lot of copy/pasting, I was thinking of some kind of template system where I could run a CLI command (in php, perl, python, shell, whatever) and have it replace all the block tags with the actual block text. I did see some answers in this question, but those seem oriented towards "we provide the style and layout, you provide the text". In my case, I have everything as far as layout, css, etc. - just want to do a glorified sed. Before I invent the wheel, I was wondering if there was a tool out there already.

• phishing attack. Where do I start the cleanup?

  I'm a newbie webmaster. I've got a domain and a site... and no clue about the web (I'm OK with files and programs... ) I got a message from google that my site is a possible phishing site, with a link the the suspect page: http://www.mydomain.com/~phishers/Paypal/us/Confirm.php needless to say, I didn't put that up. Can someone point me to a good tutorial on what to do now? I'd like to figure out what happened so I can defend against it the next time around. How do I identify what kind of attach this is? Also, what is the tilde doing in the URL path? I couldn't find any path like this on my hosting account, so I'm not entirely sure how to delete it.

This actions drop down I would like to have an action to 'Enable Editing'. Upon clicking to enable editing, I would like a PHP variable modified from 'EnableEditing = false' to 'EnableEditing = true'. Why I would like to use PHP maybe questionable, here is why I would like to use PHP under my understanding to clarify; Sections on my page will show to different administrators depending on their level.   We're planning on building a HTML snapshot creation service to provide the Google crawlers with static HTML of our JS driven single page application. Is this still necessary and/or encouraged since Google openly admits it is parsing JS now? How should I tackle this evaluation? Are there tools to provide data on when it's needed to provide snapshots and when google has sufficent parsing? Is it better because it would be much faster in comparison to the JS incremental rendering?

• How can I set up private, per-user sections on Joomla?

  For this weekend's GiveCamp project, my team has been tasked with adding some functionality to an existing Joomla-powered website for a non-profit. A certain type of user will login, and have access to a personal area where they can upload files, check for messages, see tasks that have been assigned, etc. Each user would have their own area. They would not be creating pages, and their information would only be visible to themselves (or a site-administrator, of course. No sort of weird HIPAA privacy involved). None of us have worked with Joomla before, but we'd like to help this non-profit. We're not sure if we're searching using the wrong terms, or if we're just not finding it. Is such a solution possible in Joomla? And/or are we better off building some standalone solution that interfaces with the same mySQL database as Joomla?

• Cloudflare displaying cached CSS in-line?

  I recently enabled CloudFlare on my domain, and when I make HTML statements like this: <link href="css/main.css" rel="stylesheet" /> The CSS gets displayed in-line, like this: <style>body{padding-top:40px}span.light{font-weight:lighter!important}span.title{font-size:60px;line-height:1;letter-spacing:-1px;color:inherit}</style> When I update the file via FTP, the changes are not reflected, which leads me to believe that this is a caching issue. Is this due to CloudFlare? If so, how do I disable the behavior? EDIT I also came to the conclusion that caching is behind the behavior after being able to see changes in the page after re-naming the CSS file.

• Does it matter that the TTL is higher than I've been told?

  Ok, so the title isn't very descriptive, I know. Basically, I'm trying to configure Outlook.com to use my custom domain! I've followed the steps and made the account etc. and now I have the DNS settings to configure from Windows Live. I added the MX Entries and everything last night but Windows Live is still saying I need to prove my ownership of the domain. The only thing I can think of that I had to use a differrent TTL to the one provided because my web hoster will only allow a minimum of four hours, whereas Windows Live told me to configure the TTL as one hour. Would that stop anything? By the way, my web hoster is JustHost (Shared Hosting)

  I run a website that includes a blog which was hand-coded by myself and is hosted on the same domain. My partner in this endeavour thinks it would be a good idea to open up a blogger/wordpress blog and duplicate the on-site blog on this off-site blog. AFAIK the main reason for doing this is the SEO benefits of the inbound links that this off-site blog will create. I think this is a bad idea, because: Effectively what we're doing is creating a (very small scale) link farm We're more likely to be punished than rewarded (in SEO terms) for duplicating our content across domains This introduces a problem of synchronising our content across domains. For example, if a blog post is edited on the on-site blog, then ideally the off-site blog should be similarly updated. I know very little about SEO, so would be interested to hear what more informed readers have to say.

However, this site is hosted in Europe with an offshore hosting company that says clear in its TOS that they will not do anything if they get a DMCA complain, giving freedom to clients to host whatever copyrighted material they want. Is EUCD the correct way to deal with this? Where can I find an example of a EUCD complain or even a form? DMCA has all types of examples and places to get a sample form, but EUCD has none.

• Does the Instant Preview in Google webmaster tools takes Robot.txt in account?

  Is that the way to go If I want to visually see what the googlebot see? I'm trying to check a folder which I have just blocked in my robots.txt. If I fetch the folder as google bot, It fetches ok, so that doesn't tell me nothing about whether the block is working I know there's a tool to check for blocking, but it is dependent on the input of the robots.txt Therefore I've tried the Instant preview, and I don't get a preview for what the bot sees ("pre-render), so I think that means that it's because the robots.txt blocks it; however - I don't see the bot tried beforehand to access my updated robots.txt, so I'm not sure how does it know that this folder is blocked? (it does preview another new folder, that is not blocked)

I have tried to adjust many CSS properties such as overflow, position, height, float, etc. in firebug and none of my edits have had any positive effect. I am even using a clearing div. Perhaps I am overlooking something pretty easy. How do I prevent the footer from covering up the table content?

  I have both the .com and the .org for a domain name, and using Apache I point them to the same site content. I think this might be causing problems with the Search Engines because of duplicate content. I want the .org to be the essential website. How do others handle this situation?   I have one link unit above my navigation which targets exact keywords on what my site is about, on contrary my AdSense for content Leaderboard and Wide Skyscraper show ads that are totally opposite from my keyword, while my ctr increased for about 10 times with link unit I noticed CPC is lower also (but that was just based on one day, today is higher). Is it so bad to completely get rid of standard content ads and put link units, because this way I earn so little for that site but I think that is because smart pricing (accidental clicks on ads that my users are not interested)? I earn in whole day with about 25-35 clicks as much as keyword tool shows for only one click, my site is first for the topic? I really don't know what to do. The VPS uses Debian 6 LNMP setup and the DNS is being taken care by another service. Currently the VPS is running non multi site WordPress with -+ 83 MB RAM out of 128MB. As far as I know the performance is relative to the number of request, not the number of sites in the multi site setup. The question How do I calculate maximum number of request in with that setup?   it's couple of months I've been using SH404SEF With my site. But in my site I'm getting url's in the form: http://www.downloadformsindia.com/Income-Tax-Forms/all-income-tax-return-itr-forms-2010-2011.html?task=view If I remove this suffix(?task=view), it takes us to the same page. I had raised this issue in SH404SEF forum, and I was told that this data is taken as parameter by search engines hence ignored. I want to redirect using RewriteMatch in .htaccess all such url's to the url's without ?task=view ones : ....downloadformsindia.com/Income-Tax-Forms/all-income-tax-return-itr-forms-2010-2011.html?task=view to be redirected to http://www.downloadformsindia.com/Income-Tax-Forms/all-income-tax-return-itr-forms-2010-2011.html So my question is: Will this redirection create 404's in the Google webmaster. I've thousand's of pages in the site

• Can too many 301 redirects cause a DNS error?

  For a site http://imageocd.com that I just set up I initially spelled the category "automobiles" as "autimobiles"... I know it's rediculous. I then set up over 10,000 pages behind that category e.g. http://imageocd.com/automobiles/hillman-minx-cabrio-pictures-and-wallpapers. So, I set up over 10,000 301 url redirects to change the spelling on automobiles. I just checked my Google Webmasters report and got an error saying: http://www.imageocd.com/: Googlebot can't access your siteSep 7, 2012 Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 66.7%. Could the overabundance of 301 redirects be causing this? I host 13 sites on this dedicated server and all sites are running fine. I also contacted GoDaddy and they said the server is running fine. Any ideas on what might be going on? Also, I have "canonical" set up for every URL. Could this be part of the error? Thanks.

• Point domain to new host - changed nameservers, now what?

  This is driving me nuts, because I know I'm missing something simple. I've read numerous articles/posts about how to point (not transfer) your domain to a new web host. They all say to change the name server settings at your old host, so here is what I did: On old host (1and1.com) changed the name server settings to those of my new host (inmotionhosting.com) like below: Domain name : mydomain.com Name server 1: ns.inmotionhosting.com Name server 2: ns2.inmotionhosting.com ... and confirmed this is active (did it a couple days ago) This is where every post/article I've found stops. They imply this is all that needs to be done. But how does the new host know to point the domain to my account, and the directory in my account I want it work from?? There's go to be something else to be done - just pointing to the generic name servers of the new host can't be all there is to it. Thanks in advance...I'm bewildered...
