• How to read log4j output to a web page?

  I have a web page, used for admin purposes, which runs a task (image fetching from a remote site). In order to be able to debug the task using the browser only, no ssh etc, I'd like to be able to read all log output from the executing thread and spit it out to the web page. The task boils down to: Changing log level for current thread at the beginning of the call and restore when the call is done. Reading all log output by current thread and storing it in a string. So in pseudocode my execute() method would look like this: (I'm using struts2) public String execute() throws Exception { turnLoggingLevelToDebugOnlyForThisThread() ... do stuff... restoreLoggingLevelForThisThread() String logs = readAllLogsByThisThread(); } Can this be done with log4j? I'm using tomcat, struts2, log4j and slf4j.

  In a plug-in I am using NPN_Evaluate() to execute some Javascript. How can I detect wether the Javascript raises an exception? Basically I want to execute any piece of Javascript and get the result from it or detect if it raised an exception. I tried wrapping my Javascript code like this: try { // Injected Javascript code here } catch (exc) { exc; } That way the result from NPN_Evaluate() will be an NPObject* containing a property "message" with the exception message if something goes wrong. But how can I know that it is an exception? It might as well be a result from the injected Javascript code. Am I approaching this the wrong way? Can I detect an exception without catching it in Javascript and returning the exception as the result?

• App losing db connection

  I'm having a weird issue with an old Delphi app losing it's database connection. Actually, I think it's losing something else that then makes the connection either drop or be unusable. The app is written in Delphi 6 and uses the Direct Oracle Access component (v4.0.7.1) to connect to an Oracle 9i database. The app runs as a service and periodically queries the db using a TOracleQuery object (qryAlarmList). The method that is called to do this looks like this: procedure TdmMain.RefreshAlarmList; begin try qryAlarmList.Execute; except on E: Exception do begin FStatus := ssError; EventLog.LogError(-1, 'TdmMain.RefreshAlarmList', 'Message: ' + E.Message); end; end; end; It had been running fine for years, until a couple of Perl scripts were added to this machine. These scripts run every 15 minutes and look for datafiles to import into the db, and then they do a some calculations and a bunch of reads/writes to/from the db. For some reason, when they are processing large amounts of data, and then the Delphi app tries to query the db, the Delphi app throws an exception at the "qryAlarmList.Execute" line in the above code listing. The exception is always: Access violation at address 00000000. read of address 00000000 HOW can something that the Perl scripts are doing cause this?? There are other Perl scripts on this machine that load data using the same modules and method calls and we didn't have problems. To make it even weirder, there are two other apps that will also suddenly lose their ability to talk to the database at the same time as the Perl stuff is running. Neither of those apps run on this machine, but both are Delphi 6 apps that use the same DOA component to connect to the same database. We have other apps that connect to the same db, written in Java or C# and they don't seem to have any problems. I've tried adding code before the '.Execute' method is called to: check the session's connection (session.CheckConnection(true); always comes back as 'ccOK'). see whether I can access a field of the qryAlarmList object to see if maybe it's become null; can access it fine. check the state of the qryAlarmList; always says it's qsIdle. Does anyone have any suggestions of something to try? This is driving me nuts! Dave

• Why would an OS X bundle take about 30 seconds to open?

  Hi, We wrote a simple OS X executable in objective c. It opens and runs very quickly when called. We then put that executable into a .app bundle. When calling "open" from the command line on that bundle, or double clicking the app from the finder the "open" call can take upwards of 30 seconds to return. This is especially confusing because "open" clearly starts the executable right away (I can see it running in the process list right away, and have other indications that it's doing work), but when done from the command line, the "open" command takes a long time to return, and when done from the Finder the icon will bounce for a very long time before acting normal. I know the executable itself still opens very quickly because calling "open" on the executable inside my bundle returns very quickly, however calling it on the .app runs the code right away but takes 30 seconds or so to return. Has anyone run into this before? Do you have any suggestions for what could cause something like this? I've not been able to see anything funny in the bundle structure or the plist, but maybe I'm missing something. Thanks,

  In my project I have a generic Packet class. I would like to be able to upcast to other classes (like LoginPacket or MovePacket). The base class contains a command and arguments (greatly simplified): public class Packet { public String Command; public String[] Arguments; } I would like to have be able to convert from Packet to LoginPacket (or any other) based on a check if Packet.Command == "LOGIN". The login packet would not contain any new data members, but only methods for accessing specific arguments. For example: public class LoginPacket : Packet { public String Username { get { return Arguments[0]; } set { Arguments[0] == value; } } public String Password { get { return Arguments[1]; } set { Arguments[1] == value; } } } It would be great if I could run a simple code that would cast from Packet to LoginPacket with something like LoginPacket _Login = (LoginPacket)_Packet;, but that throws a System.InvalidCastException. It seems like this would be an easy task, as no new data is included, but I can't figure out any other way than copying everything from the Packet class to a new LoginPacket class.

• problem with HttpWebRequest.GetResponse perfomance in multithread applcation

  I have very bad perfomance of HttpWebRequest.GetResponse method when it is called from different thread for different URLs. For example if we have one thread and execute url1 it requires 3sec. If we ececute url1 and url2 in parallet it requires 10sec, first request ended after 8sec and second after 10sec. If we exutet 10 URLs url1, url2, ... url0 it requires 1min 4 sec!!! first request ended after 50 secs! I use GetResponse method. I tried te set DefaultConnectionLimit but it doesn't help. If use BeginGetRequest/EndGetResponse methods it works very fast but only if this methods called from one thread. If from different it is also very slowly. I need to execute Http requests from many threads at one time. ?an anyone ever encountered such a problem? Thank you for any suggestions.

  I am looking to have one of my Windows Forms applications be run programmatically—from the command line. In preparation, I have separated the logic in its own class from the Form. Now I am stuck trying to get the application to switch back and forth based on the presence of command line arguments. Would it make more sense (i.e. take less developer time) to have my logic class be a DLL that gets loaded by two separate applications? Or is there something entirely different that I'm not aware of? • How do I get the path of the current executed file in python?

  This may seam a newbie question but it is not. • Progress dialog getting dismissed before the thread gets finished - Android

  Hi experts, I use the code provided by Fedor in the following link, in order to get the latitude and longitude from my simple demo app. I am trying to fetch the latitude and longitude using the MyLocation class provided by him in that link. What is the simplest and most robust way to get the user's current location in Android? I try to fetch the latitude and longitude on a button click. On the button click, I start an async task and delegate the location fetching work to the do in background method of my asynctask. pre execute - progressdialog initiated. post execute - progress dialog dismissed. This is how, the progress dialog in my code should work and here is the issue which I have. THe progress dialog gets initiated correctly, but even before the latitude and longitude gets printed in the doinbackground method, the progress dialog gets dismissed. I do not understand why this happens. • Manipulating a NSTextField via AppleScript

  A little side project I'm working on is a digital life assistant, much like project JARVIS. What I'm trying to do is speak to my mac, have my words translated to text and then have the text interpreted by my program. Currently, my app is very simple, consisting of a single window containing a single wrapped NSTextView. Using MacSpeech Dictate, When I say the custom command "Jeeves", MacSpeech ensures that my app is frontmost, highlights any text in the TextField and clears it, then presses the Return key to trigger the textDidEndEditing method of NSTextField. This is done via Applescript. MacSpeech then switches to dictation mode and the next sentence I say will appear in the NSTextField. What I can't figure out is how to signify that I have finished saying a command to my program. I could simply say another keyword like "execute" or something similar that would send an AppleScript return keystroke to my app (thereby triggering the textDidEndEditing event) but this is cumbersome. Is there a notification that happens when text is pasted into a NSTextField? Would a timer work that would fire after maybe three seconds once my program becomes frontmost (three seconds should be sufficient for me to say a command)? Thanks,

  Hi, I am working to develop a JMS application(stand alone multithreaded java application) which can receive 100 messages at a time , they need to be processed and database procedures need to be called for inserting/updating data. Procedures are very heavy as validations are also performed in them. Each procedure is taking about 30 to 50 seconds of time to execute and they are capable to run concurrently. My concern is to execute 100 procedures for all 100 messages and also send reply within time limit of 90 seconds by jms application. No application server to be used(requirement) and database is Teradata (RDBMS) I am using connection pool and thread pool in java code and testing code with 90 connections. Question is : (1) What should be the limit on number of connections with database at a time? (2) How many threads at a time are recommended? Thanks, Jyoti

  I am trying to incorporate more functional programming idioms into my java development. One pattern that I like the most and avoids side effects is building classes that have behavior but they don't necessarily have any state. The behavior is locked into the methods but they only act on the parameters passed in. The code below is code I am trying to avoid: public class BadObject { private Map<String, String> data = new HashMap<String, String>(); public BadObject() { data.put("data", "data"); } /** * Act on the data class. We still may run into issues with this class but that is an issue with the method and the state of the data, we can address issues in the routine as opposed to not trusting the entire object. I did find however that if I do a checkout beforehand, and set the rc.local svn command to an svn update, that it still does not run the svn command but does output apache2 restart successfully. These same svn commands work perfectly when I run them manually, tho it's strange that within rc.local they do not produce any output whatsoever to logger yet apache2 restart does. I've also tried running the svn co and svn update both with sudo -u and without. How do I get the svn command to run? Either a full checkout or an update. At this point either would be better than nothing!

Not sure what is the most performant way of doing it, but I am trying to see how the multi value mysql inserts do using hibernate. String query = "insert into user(age, name, birth_date) values(24, 'Joe', '2010-05-19 14:33:14'), (25, 'Joe1', '2010-05-19 14:33:14')" getHibernateTemplate().execute(new HibernateCallback(){ public Object doInHibernate(Session session) throws HibernateException, SQLException { return session.createSQLQuery(query).executeUpdate(); } }); But I get this error: 'could not execute native bulk manipulation query.' Please check your query ..... Any idea of I can use a multi value mysql insert using Hibernate? or is my query incorrect? Any other ways that I can improve the performance? I did try the saveOrUpdateAll() method, and that wasn't good enough!
