  • Industry-style practices for increasing productivity in a small scientific environment

    - by drachenfels
Hi, I work in a small, independent scientific lab in a university in the United States, and it has come to my notice that, compared with a lot of practices that are ostensibly followed in the industry, like daily checkout into a version control system, use of a single IDE/editor for all languages (like emacs), etc, we follow rather shoddy programming practices. So, I was thinking of getting together all my programs, scripts, etc, and building a streamlined environment to increase productivity. I'd like suggestions from people on Stack Overflow for the same. Here is my primary plan.: I use MATLAB, C and Python scripts, and I'd like to edit, compile them from a single editor, and ensure correct version control. (questions/things for which I'd like suggestions are in italics) 1] Install Cygwin, and get it to work well with Windows so I can use git or a similar version control system (is there a DVCS which can work directly from the windows CLI, so I can skip the Cygwin step?). 2] Set up emacs to work with C, Python, and MATLAB files, so I can edit and compile all three at once from a single editor (say, emacs) (I'm not very familiar with the emacs menu, but is there a way to set the path to the compiler for certain languages? I know I can Google this, but emacs documentation has proved very hard for me to read so far, so I'd appreciate it if someone told me in simple language) 3] Start checking in code at the end of each day or half-day so as to maintain a proper path of progress of my code (two questions), can you checkout files directly from emacs? is there a way to checkout LabVIEW files into a DVCS like git? Lastly, I'd like to apologize for the rather vague nature of the question, and hope I shall learn to ask better questions over time. I'd appreciate it if people gave their suggestions, though, and point to any resources which may help me learn.

  • Creating VSTO Excel Template fails

    - by Phil.Wheeler
I have been trying for ages in all sorts of ways (short of ritual incantations and sacrifices) to get Visual Studio Team Edition 2008 to allow me to create Office 2003 solutions, whether those be templates or documents. No matter what I try, I'm always presented with an error which basically says "You've got the wrong version of Office installed. Try installing something compatible". I have the complete installation of Office 2003 Pro installed along with the Office 2003 Primary Interop Assemblies (which I put on after I installed Office) and then VS2008TE as already mentioned. There has to be some reason why this refuses to work, but I'm out of ideas. Help appreciated.

  • Using "class/object" MooTools-style events in jQuery

    - by Infinity
One of the nice things about MooTools, is that it lets you easily assign/fire events to objects, for example: var playerSingleton = new (new Class({ Implements: [Events], initialize: function() {}, setVolume: function() { // do some stuff.. this.fireEvent('volumeChanged') } })); // Somewhere else... playerSingleton.addEvent('volumeChanged', function() { // do something when volume changes }); playerSingleton.setVolume(75); // bam our event fires. How would something like this be done with jQuery? I know there's .bind and .trigger, but it seems like the only way to do this is to bind/fire events to the window object: $(window).bind('volumeChanged', fn); Is there anything better than this, more like the MooTools approach? Thanks!

  • phpbb template comment conditional

    - by john
I see in PHPBB they use conditional statements inside their html, or xhtml, if you dont know what I mean here is a snippet: <!-- IF MODERATORS --> <p class="moderators"><!-- IF S_SINGLE_MODERATOR -->{L_MODERATOR}<!-- ELSE -->{L_MODERATORS}<!-- ENDIF -->: {MODERATORS}</p> <!-- ENDIF --> <!-- IF U_MCP --> <p class="linkmcp">[ <a href="{U_MCP}">{L_MCP}</a> ]</p> <!-- ENDIF --> Is there an explanation on how to implement this in my own site, as it would be very useful and clean up a lot of code.

  • Asp.Net MVC style routing in Django

    - by Andrew Hanson
I've been programming in Asp.Net MVC for quite some time now and to expand a little bit beyond the .Net world I've recently began learning Python and Django. I am enjoying Django but one thing I am missing from Asp.Net MVC is the automatic routing from my urls to my controller actions. In Asp.Net MVC I can build much of my application using this single default route: routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = "" } // Parameter defaults ); In Django I've found myself adding an entry to urls.py for each view that I want to expose which leads to a lot more url patterns than I've become used to in Asp.Net MVC. Is there a way to create a single url pattern in Django that will handle "[Application]/view/[params]" in a way similar to Asp.Net MVC? Perhaps at the main web site level?

  • Form submits correctly in Chrome/FF, but fails altogether in IE/Safari

    - by culov
    I have a form with a css submit button. When a the submit button is clicked, i call a function that executes: document.forms["request"].onsubmit(); What should happen, then, is that the onsubmit method ought to be triggered. This works properly in Chrome/FF, but for some reason IE/Safari will bypass the onsubmit function and simply add the parameter "address=" onto the url as if it were submitting the form and ignoring the onsubmit function. Heres the code for the form: <form id="request" method="get" onsubmit="addLocation(this.address.value); return false;"> <br> <label style="position:relative;left:5px;" for="address">Enter an intersection or address: </label> <br> <br> <input style="height:35px; width:300px;position:relative;bottom:1px;left:10px;" id="address" name="address" class="required address"/> <a style="float:right;right:120px;position:relative;" class="button" onclick="submit();"> <span>Submit Request </span> </a> </form> and what follows are some relevant js functions: function addLocation(address) { if (geocoder) { geocoder.getLocations(address, function (point) { if (!point) { alert(address + " not found"); } else { if (point.Placemark[0].address != submittedString) { submittedString = point.Placemark[0].address; addRow(point.Placemark[0].address); req = "addrequest?truck=" + "coolhaus&address=" + point.Placemark[0].address; alert(req); addRequest(req); request.onreadystatechange = function () {} } } }); } } function addRequest(req) { try { request = new XMLHttpRequest(); } catch (e) { try { request = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } catch (e) { alert("XMLHttpRequest error: " + e); } } request.open("GET", req, true); request.send(null); return request; } You can test the form here: http://la.truxmap.com/request?id=grillmastersla Thanks so much!

  • How to use Vendor Properties in Multiple Backgrounds?

    - by barraponto
I want to use multiple backgrounds in css, which are currently supported by Firefox 3.61, Chrome/Safari, supposedly Opera10.5 (doesn't run on gnu/linux). It is working fine, however i would like to use linear-gradients as a background. it works ok for Firefox, doesn't work at all with Chrome, yet i can't figure out how to make it work for both at the same time. any clues? http://snook.ca/archives/html_and_css/multiple-bg-css-gradients came the closest to match what i need, but i couldn't get it to work with chrome yet.

  • Vertical centering text (jQuery)

    - by Nimbuz
<div style="width: 100px; height:50px; line-height:50px; overflow:hidden;"> <p>A short line</p> </div> <div style="width: 100px; height:50px; line-height:50px; overflow:hidden;"> <p>A really really really long line</p> </div> Wrapped text in the second example gets cut off because of the line-height:50px which should be 25px in this case. How do I use jQuery to find if theres single or multi-line text in an element? Thanks!

  • Selecting a UserControl from XAML

    - by kmontgom
I'm working on a problem right now where I need to embed a UserControl inside another UserControl. But, I need to determine at runtime which embedded UserControl to instantiate. This implies to me that some form of data binding and/or template selection mechanism has to be invoked, but I'm not sure how to proceed with the pure XAML approach. If I was to do this with code, I would define some sort of container control in the parent UserControl, and then in the code-behind, implement some logic which would instantiate the appropriate child UserControl and then insert it as Content into the specified container in the parent UserControl. Can this be done using only XAML, or is some sort of code-behind required?

CSS <style type="text/css"> fieldset {margin: 0 0 10px 0;padding: 0; border:1px solid silver; background-color: #f9f9f9; -moz-border-radius:5px; -webkit-border-radius:5px; border-radius:5px} fieldset p{clear:both;margin:.3em 0;overflow:hidden;} fieldset label{float:left;width:140px;display:block;text-align:right;padding-right:8px;margin-right: 2px;color: #4a4a4a;} fieldset input, fieldset textarea {margin:0;border:1px solid #ddd;padding:3px 5px 3px 5px;} fieldset legend { background: #C6D1E8; position:relative; left: -1px; margin: 0; width: 100%; padding: 0px 5px; font-size: 1.11em; font-weight: bold; text-align:left; border: 1px solid silver; -webkit-border-top-left-radius: 5px; -webkit-border-top-right-radius: 5px; -moz-border-radius-topleft: 5px; -moz-border-radius-topright: 3px; border-top-left-radius: 5px; border-top-right-radius: 5px; } #md {width: 400px;} </style> HTML <div id="md"> <fieldset> <legend>some title</legend> <p> <label>Login</label> <input type="text" /> </p> <p> <label>Password</label> <input type="text" /> </p> <p><label>&nbsp;</label> <input type="submit"> </p> </fieldset> </div>

  • Using vertical-align on an element with background-image

    - by bobo
<style type='text/css'> #span1{ background-image:url("http://www.reoiv.com/images/rss.jpg"); background-repeat:no-repeat; cursor:pointer; display:block; float:left; height:15px; width:15px; vertical-align:text-bottom; } </style> <span id='span1'></span>???? What I would like to do is to achieve the vertical align: text-bottom effect but I am not doing it on a image element. I am doing it on an element with background-image set. If you paste the above codes here: http://htmledit.squarefree.com/ You will see that the text failed to vertically align to bottom. I would like to know how it can be done without adding extra html element if possible. Many thanks to you all.

  • IVR-style dialog system / workflow / menu

    - by unbeli
I need to build a dialog system similar to IVR used in call centers. My system is not phone-based, but the dialog is similar. Something like System: "Main menu: Enter [1] for menu1, [2] for menu2" User: [1] System: "menu1: enter [1] for apples, [2] for oranges, [3] for main menu" User: [7] System: "What??" System: "menu1: enter [1] for apples, [2] for oranges, [3] for main menu" User: [2] ... and so on I want to have a nice declarative description of all the possible options and a nice way to run through that tree, guided by user input. Already considered: ANTLR-generated lexer/parser (seems to be an overkill), SCXML-based state machine (seems like only transitions can be declared, the rest needs to be coded)

  • extra vertical space within <li> in IE7

    - by powerboy
The test case is in below. Or you can view it in jsbin: http://jsbin.com/uxagi. <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> body {margin: 20px; } #main {border: 1px solid red;} img {float: left; height: 100px; padding: 0 10px 10px 0;} ul {margin: 0; padding: 0; list-style-type: none;} </style> </head> <body> <div id="main"> <ul> <li> <img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/07/CranebyLinson1894.jpg/100px-CranebyLinson1894.jpg" /> <div class="content">"The Open Boat" is a short story by American author Stephen Crane. First published in 1897, it was based on Crane's experience of having survived a shipwreck off the coast of Florida earlier that year while traveling to Cuba to work as a newspaper correspondent. Crane was stranded at sea for thirty hours when his ship, the SS Commodore, sank after hitting a sandbar. He and three other men were forced to navigate their way to shore in a small boat; one of the men, an oiler named Billie Higgins, drowned. Crane subsequently adapted his report into narrative form, and the short story "The Open Boat" was published in Scribner's Magazine. The story is told from the point of view of an anonymous correspondent, Crane's fictional doppelgänger, and the action closely resembles the author's experiences after the shipwreck. A volume titled The Open Boat and Other Tales of Adventure was published in the United States in 1898. Praised for its innovation by contemporary critics, the story is considered an exemplary work of literary Naturalism. One of the most frequently discussed works in Crane's canon, it is notable for its use of imagery, irony, symbolism, and exploration of themes including survival, solidarity, and the conflict between man and nature. H. G. Wells considered "The Open Boat" to be "beyond all question, the crown of all [Crane's] work".</div> </li> </ul> </div> </body> </html> Note that in standards-compliant browsers and IE8, there is no vertical space between the red border and the text. But there is vertical space in IE7 (haven't tested in IE6).

  • Question about migrating from ASP .NET User Controls to .NET 3.5 Master Page technology

    - by Jim McFetridge
When migrating from an ASP .NET user control -based page with a header, footer, and menu to a Master Page using the same HTML mark-up, is it normal for CSS or javascript behaviors to change slightly? In particular, the submenu bar text now appears run together (which looks like a CSS symptom) and the graphics on the line above it appear to have an incorrect z-order. (The menu operation is javascript-based.) (I tried to paste images here but couldn't.) Also, the site is very large and we've not been given permission to redo the menu for the entire site. This is a forward-only migration. (Because I know that someone will ask.) Assuming that there are no changes in scope, what are the things that I should check? Thanks! Jim

  • Blackberry custom slideshow-style BitmapField manager

    - by Diego Tori
Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to implement the following: Suppose I have a custom Manager that has about 10 or so BitmapFields layed out in a horizontal manner (similar to a slideshow contained in a HFM ) . What I want to achieve is to be able to move the image HFM via touchEvent horizontally, where a BitmapField would take focus on the left-hand side of the custom Manager. In other words, will I have to give a value to setHorizontalScroll and if so, is it a matter of just incrementing that value when the user makes a left or right touch event. Also, how can I get the focus of a Field within a given position on the screen (i.e. the left-most Field on the HFM) when the HFM is scrolling sideways via touchEvent?

  • What is the best approach towards styling GWT applications?

    - by Ashwin
General approach in GWT is to use Panels and then apply custom CSS themes to get a customized look. While I can achieve a certain extent of personalization of my GWT app through CSS tinkering, I was wondering how others generally approach styling. Some of the suggestions I came across the web were to manage layout with plain HTML, through use of HTMLPanel's. This way one can straightaway use the HTML mock-up within the application without having to code all the layout. So what in your opinion is the best and least painful way to approach layout and custom styling of GWT application?

  • Style guide for database metadata naming

    - by Nulldevice
We want to establish some database metadata naming rules in our new project. For example: tables are named as nouns in a plural form (courses, books, lessons) if present, an adjective goes before a noun in a table name and is separated by an underscore (red_books, new_lessons) table index column is always named "id" foreign key names are derived from a table name with suffix _id (book_id, red_book_id) so on Does someone know any guide like this?

  • Generating JavaDoc style documentation

    - by Walter White
Hi all, I would like to generate a report similar to JavaDoc so that you can real easily click on a test, result, and source. I am running HtmlUnit tests so I will have the result (html), source (request, headers, parameters, etc.), stack trace all visible so a developer or qa can go back later to review this to see what went awry. So, in the left frame, the tests will be listed along with the group they were a part of (similar to packages in javadoc). In the right frame, the results will be presented along with the source and stack trace. How can I achieve this? The HtmlUnit tests are part of the project and not a stand-alone plugin if that matters. Thanks, Walter

  • Umbraco template issues

    - by bomortensen
Hi fellow Umbraco users, I'm currently building my first umbraco website and since I'm completely new to umbraco I've already ran into a problem which I'm sure is pretty straight-forward to do. That said, I'm by no means a beginner when it comes to building sites that run on a (open source) CMS as I've been using Joomla! since it was called Mambo. Anyway, the site I'm building is here: my site What I want to do is to have some content in the white box that changes when you mouseover/hover one of the menu items. Also that content has to stay "active" when you've clicked on a link (i.e. if you click on "Profile" I need to highlight the Profile menu item with the gray color and the white boxs content needs to be what would be related to the Profile menu item. How do I go about this? What would be the best practice when it comes to showing multiple content on a site? I've watched the video about multiple Content Place Holders, but I never really got it to work. I can't get a page to display in the NavigationPlaceHolder (the placeholder I put in the white box), but thats because the actual page is Frontpage.aspx and not WhateverIsInThenavigationPlaceHolder.aspx. If I go to the mysite.dk/WhateverIsInTheNavigationPlaceHolder.aspx it shows up fine. What have I missed here? :) Thanks in advance! If my question is not clear in some ways, please tell me and I will try to explain it better. All the best, Bo

  • Change UIImagePicker Navigation Bar style to blue

    - by vodkhang
    All of my view has a blue navigation bar but when I want user to choose a photo, the UIImagePicker is black. I tried to set the navigation bar of UIImagePickerController to blue using UIBarStyleDefault but it does not work for me, the color is still black. I tried with other UIBarStyle like UIBarStyleBlack and UIBarStyleOpaque as well but it doesn't change the navigation bar of the picker anyway. Here is my code // Let the user choose a new photo. UIImagePickerController *imagePicker = [[UIImagePickerController alloc] init]; imagePicker.delegate = self; imagePicker.navigationBar.barStyle = UIBarStyleDefault; [self presentModalViewController:imagePicker animated:YES]; [imagePicker release];
