Today we take a look at what it has to offer, from Webcasts, White Papers, Training Videos, and more. Microsoft Desktop Player You can run the player from the website (shown here) or download the application for use on your local machine (link below). It allows you to easily access MS training and information in a central interface. To get the Desktop version, download the .msi file from the site… And run through the installer…   When you first start out, enter in if you’re an IT Pro, Developer and your role. Then you can decide on the resources you’re looking for such as Exchange Server, SharePoint, Windows 7, Security…etc. Here is an example of checking out a Podcast on Office 2007 setup and configuration from TechNet radio. Under Settings you can customize your search results and local resources. This helps you narrow down pertinent information for your needs. If you find something you really like, hover the pointer over the screen and you can add it to your library, share it, send feedback, and check for additional resources. If you don’t need items in your library they can be easily deleted. Under the News tab you get previews of Microsoft news items, clicking on it will open the full article in a separate browser. While you’re watching a presentation you can show or hide the details related to it. Conclusion Microsoft Desktop Player is currently in Beta, but has a lot of cool features to offer for your learning needs. You can easily find Podcasts, Webcasts, and more without having to browse all over the place. In our experience we didn’t notice any bugs, and what it offers so far works well.   • OSD desktop-clock that does not get in your way?

    Hello, is there a clock application, that can be placed on your screen like a widget staying always on top but automatically fades away on mouseover enabling you to click through it on items below, (behaves pretty much like the Ubuntu notifications in that sense). I am aware, that there are screenlets and gdesklets widget apps, but those are buggy, look outdated, and do not comply with the criteria listed above. What I have in mind is a clock that is large, (digital), always visible (on top of all other windows), and does not disrupt your work (e.g. you can still click that scroll bar or button if it is just below the clock, since the clock fades away on hovering). A tool called "OSD-Lyrics" that show lyrics for songs and behaves exactly the way I described above. So it should be possible (and even easier) to do the same with a clock. Thanks in advance, YSN

  • Single NFS folder shared across multiple clients

    I'm trying to mount a single NFS folder from server say "/share/folder" to multiple clients up to 32 clients, and the clients tries to access the folder and create files. The problem I'm facing is that when I execute the write command I see only one client is able to access the folder the remaining clients are blocked and not able to proceed to write. So, is whatever I'm trying to do above is correct? Can we write/read files from the same folder on multiple clients? if yes how can I do it prallel? Kindly advice! Thanks

  • PPTP: Linux clients unreachable

    I have setup a PPTP server on a CentOS 6 box. Several clients (Windows and Linux) connect to this server. All clients use the same subnet. All clients (Win or Lin) can surf the Internet using the VPN successfully. Windows clients can ping any other Windows client (XP/Vista/7) connected to VPN. Linux clients (KVPNC) can ping any Windows client (XP/Vista/7) connected to VPN. So far so good. But there's this weird problem and I've been trying to figure it out with no luck: No client can ping (reach) a Linux client (successfully) connected to VPN. And yes, the firewall is completely disabled. I'd really appreciate any hint/idea. TIA, EDIT: The ultimate goal of this is to share services across the VPN, like accessing a HTTPD running on a Linux box from a Windows client.

  • In what cases should I install (and configure) Postfix as a desktop user?

    Possible cases: 1) I plan to do Debian packaging (this case is the motivation since postfix gets installed as a dependency of some development packages, so it means that in such a case might be necessary). 2) I plan to use Evolution and a Internet provider mail account. 3) I plan to use gmail. Surely if I read Postfix documentation I may find the answer, but its huge and couldn't find it. In any case how (or where) should I find the answer to a question like that by myself?   • How can I clear history and settings for the Remote Desktop Viewer (Vinagre)?

    How do I clear all the settings for Vinagre to take it back to a brand-new, virgin state? I accidentally typed a connection in wrong and I cannot figure out how to delete it. Also some of my connections are not working correctly and I think that if I could flush the whole thing clean it might fix those issues. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it remembers the previous settings/connections.

  • Cannot see user desktop (Applications, Places, System...) when I log in

    I am very new to Ubuntu. I recently got a new laptop running Windows 7. I am using Virtual Box and just installed the Ubuntu 12.10 ISO as a new Virtual Machine within Virtual Box. Everything seemed to install just fine and I even added the Guest Additions under Devices. The problem is that I cannot see the menus and my login information. The virtual machine says it is running; however, I do not have the Applications, Places, System, etc. tray to select from. Is there something I am supposed to do after logging in to get this? I entered my password and everything seemed fine, I just don't have those drop-down menus available...

  • How to initiate chatting between two clients and two clients only, using applets and servlets?

    Hello everyone, I first need to apologize for my earlier questions. (You can check my profile for them)They seemed to ask more questions than give answers. Hence, I am laying down the actual question that started all them absurd questions. I am trying to design a chat applet. Till now, I have coded the applet, servlet and communication between the applet and the servlet. The code in the servlet side is such that I was able to establish chatting between clients using the applets, but the code was more like a broadcast all feature, i.e. all clients would be chatting with each other. That was my first objective when I started designing the chat applet. The second step is chatting between only two specific users, much like any other chat application we have. So this was my idea for it: I create an instance of the servlet that has the 'broadcast-all' code. I then pass the address of this instance to the respective clients. 2 client applets use the address to then chat. Technically the code is 'broadcast-all', but since only 2 clients are connected to it, it gives the chatting between two clients feature. Thus, groups of 2 clients have different instances of the same servlet, and each instance handles chatting between two clients at a max. However, as predicted, the idea didn't materialize! I tried to create an instance of the servlet but the only solution for that was using sessions on the servlet side, and I don't know how to use this session for later communications. I then tried to modify my broadcast-all code. In that code, I was using classes that implemented Observer and Observable interfaces. So the next idea that I got was: Create a new object of the Observable class(say class_1). This object be common to 2 clients. 2 clients that wish to chat will use same object of the class_1. 2 other clients will use a different object of class_1. But the problem here lies with the class that implements the Observer interface(say class_2). Since this has observers monitoring the same type of class, namely class_1, how do I establish an observer monitoring one object of class_1 and another observer monitoring another object of the same class class_1 (Because notifyObservers() would notify all the observers and I can't assign a particular observer to a particular object)? I first decided to ask individual problems, like how to create instances of servlets, using objects of observable and observer and so on in stackoverflow... but I got confused even more. Can anyone give me an idea how to establish chatting between two clients only?(I am using Http and not sockets or RMI). Regards, Mithun. P.S.     I am trying to figure out why failed remote desktop connections (from Windows remote desktop) show the client ip address as a hyphen.     Remember how previous versions of Windows had an Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, and you could right-click it to quickly access the Internet Options screen? It’s completely gone in Windows 7, but a geeky hack can bring it back. Microsoft removed this feature to comply with all those murky legal battles they’ve had, and their alternate suggestion is to create a standard shortcut to iexplore.exe on the Desktop, but it’s not the same thing. We’ve got a registry hack to bring it back. This guest article was written by Ramesh from the WinHelpOnline blog, where he’s got loads of really geeky registry hacks. Bring Back the Internet Explorer Namespace Icon in Windows 7 the Easy Way If you just want the IE icon back, all you need to do is download the RealInternetExplorerIcon.zip file, extract the contents, and then double-click on the w7_ie_icon_restore.reg file. That’s all you have to do. There’s also an undo registry file there if you want to get rid of it. Download the Real Internet Explorer Icon Registry Hack Manual Registry Hack If you prefer doing things the manual way, or just really want to understand how this hack works, you can follow through the manual steps below to learn how it was done, but we’ll have to warn you that it’s a lot of steps.     I have a small confusion about the differences between the 2 types of set ups: When deploying using Add Roles and Features the Wizard requests to choose from one of two Deployment Scenarios: Virtual machine-based desktop deployment : Virtual machine-based desktop deployment allows users to connect to virtual desktop collections that include published RemoteApp programs and virtual desktops. Session-based desktop deployment : Session-based desktop deployment allows users to connect to session collections that include published RemoteApp programs and session-based desktops. Although this seems intuitive now, if I continue with "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment" I later have another two options when creating a collection: Pooled virtual desktop collection Personal virtual desktop collection This is where my confusion lies. What is the differences between a Session-based deployment and Virtual machine-based deployment with Personal virtual desktop collections? I'm mostly finding information pertaining to Windows Server 2008 but I know there are some core improvements in VDI 2012 so would someone please comment on that. Thank you

    Hi I'm trying to create a "gadget" like application using WPF. The goal is to get the same behavior as a normal Windows 7 gadget: No task-bar entry Doesn't show up when you alt+tab windows NOT always on top, applications can be on top Visible while performing 'Aero Peek' Visible while using 'Show desktop' / Windows+D I've been able to accomplish the first four goals, but have been unable to find a solution to the fifth problem. The closest I've come is by using the utility class from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/75785/how-do-you-do-appbar-docking-to-screen-edge-like-winamp-in-wpf, but this turns the app into a "toolbar", thereby banishing applications from the part of the screen where my gadget GUI is placed. I can see that similar questions has been asked previously on Stackoverflow, but those have died out before a solution was found. Posting anyway in the hope that there is now someone out there with the knowledge to solve this =)

  • Implementing a 'Send Feedback' feature in a Java desktop application

    I would like to implement a 'Send Feedback' option in a Java desktop application. One which will pop up a box for the user to enter a comment, then send it to us along with a screenshot of the application window. How would be the best way to communicate the data to us? Two obvious solutions spring to mind: Email - I'm thinking that the application would connect to an SMTP server set-up by us, with the username/password somehow hidden in the code. SMTP over SSL for security (not of the data being sent, but of the SMTP username/password). Web service - pretty self explanatory. Which of these would be best, or is there a better alternative?

The principe being: - Write the django app, and use something like cherrypy to serve it. - Write a Qt app in C++ to access it and this by using QtWebview (webkit) I'd like to "bundle" this in a single app. The lighter, the better :) So here are my questions and if you have better ideas and suggestions, please share them :) Is it possible to serve a django app with a c++ one?   • Desktop PC Raid 5 or JBOD?

    I have a desktop PC and I want to get alot of space for movies, music, and pictures. I probably will not be deleting files. I am running Windows 7 on my system. It is kind of silly I just want the physical drives to be labeled as a single letter drive. And probably map my video, documents, pictures and music on that single drive. The main reason I considered RAID 5 because I would be lazy to get the data I lost and hopefully that if I get a new drive, it would rebuild it. So my question is which would be better? A second question is can I get RAID card that has only 2 internal connectors and still do RAID 5? or do I have to get a RAID card that has 4 internal connectors.

  • Hosting and domain registrations for multiple clients

    I am finally getting regular work desiging, developing, and deploying websites for small businesses and individuals. So far the websites utilize single-user content management systems, so the websites create, as far as I know, minimal load on the shared servers. I have always required that each of my clients purchase annual shared hosting at Dreamhost. For domain registration, I ask that they register with Dreamhost, but some already have a registered domain elsewhere and this is fine with me. I do this so the billing issues are the client's responsibility, not mine. My question is: Since I can register unlimited domains and connect them to my one shared hosting account at Dreamhost, should I not be requiring clients to individually pay for shared hosting and a domain? Should I actually be paying for one hosting account and then hosting all of my client's websites on that account? As I said before, I currently have each client buy their own hosting, because I feel that, for example, if there is high traffic to their site, there would be less a chance of the site going down than if their site was hosted with many others on one account. I am famous for being long-winded, please let me know if I can clarify at all. Thanks!

    I'm about to start a project developing a Ruby desktop application. I expect to to be fairly big and I want to learn techniques for dividing code among modules and other techniques for managing complexity. Most large apps I've looked at are Rails apps, but these aren't very helpful, because most of the work is done by Rails itself. What source code would you recommend I take a look at? I'm not interested in libraries or Rails apps, because I get how they do things. CLI apps are OK, but I'm mostly interested in GUI apps (I'm using Gtk+, but I can learn just as much from apps using other GUI toolkits).

  • View OS X Desktop on windows remotely at higher resolution then hosting machine

    I have a new macbook air 11, which I do some web based programming on, I have a windows box with a 1920x1200 display which I'd like to use to view the mac desktop and keep working at home when I can - taking advantage of the higher resolution screen and full sized keyboard/mouse. I don't think VNC or such is the answer I'm looking for as it would restrict the display to the airs 1366x768 - negating the main benefit more lines of text on screen. From some rudimentary googleing I think I'm after some sort of x-windows / x-11 remote display. But I'm not a Linux user and any discussion seems to be about linux os x or windows Linux setups. Can anyone provide a clear set of instructions on how to do this or an application that can do this.

  • Share the same subnet between Internal network and VPN Clients

    I would like to set up a configuration where VPN clients connecting to my Forefront TMG can access all the resources of my Internal network without having the to use the option "Use default gateway on remote network" on the VPN's TCP/IP Ipv4 Advanced Settings. This is important to me, since they can use their own internet while accessing my network through VPN (the security implications of this are acceptable on my cenario) My Internal network runs on 10.50.75.x, and I set up Forefront TMG to relay the DHCP of my Internal network to the VPN clients, so they get IPs from the same range as the Internal network. This setup initially works, and the VPN clients use their own internet, and can access anything that is on the internal network. However, after a while, HTTP Proxy Traffic from the Internal network starts getting routed to the IP of the RRAS Dial In Interface, instead of the IP of the Internal's network gateway. When this happens, the HTTP Proxy starts getting denied for obvious reasons. My first question is: does this happen because Forefront TMG wasn't designed to handle a cenario that I described above, and it "loses itself"? My second question is: Is there any way to solve this problem, either through configuration or firewall policies? My third question is: If there's no way that it can work with the cenario above, is there another cenario that will solve my problem, and do what I'd like it to do properly? Below are my network routes: 1 => Local Host Access => Route => Local Host => All Networks 2 => VPN Clients to Internal Network => Route => VPN Clients => Internal 3 => Internet Access => NAT => Internal, Perimeter, VPN Clients => External 4 => Internal to Perimeter => Route => Internal, VPN Clients => Perimeter Tks!

  • How to achieve 'Activities' in Unity?

    I like the concept of an activities centric desktop and I wonder if this can be achieved in Unity. For me, an activity is a couple of applications that belong to the same subject, like 'photo manipulation', 'software development', 'office work', 'social activities', 'music and video'. I would like to utilize the virtual desktops to arrange applications that belong to the same activity group. Example: Desktop 1 contains all applications that belong to 'office work' Desktop 2 contains all applications that I need for 'software development' Desktop 3 contains all applications that I usually need for 'photo works' Therefore I would like to give names to the virtual desktops that reflect their purpose. And I would like Unity to auto-start the required applications when I start my computer or when I switch to one of the virtual desktops. Is this possible with Unity (or any other desktop)?

    Is there any virtual desktop software that can virtualize desktop just like a virtual desktop to sandbox (sort of like virtualization and sandbox combined). I want to create many desktop and each of them must be sandbox. For example if I have virus infected in one of the desktop, I just have to clear or close the desktop and everything is fine. Is there any software that can do that kind of jobs that I have mentioned? Remember I am not asking recommendation of software, but the software that can do the job. UPDATE: I mean that every virtual desktop is working as a virtual box or sandbox. Clearing or closing the desktop will work as shutting down that virtual box.

    I'm writing a Windows batch file and want to copy something to the desktop. I think I can use this: %UserProfile%\Desktop\ However, I'm thinking, that's probably only going to work on an English OS. Is there a way I can do this in a batch file that will work on any internationalized version?   • How can I make full-screen desktop applications only cover the snapped desktop?

    In Windows 8, you can "snap" two apps next to each other, and one of those apps can be the legacy Windows desktop environment. A convenient application for this (or so I thought) would be to snap a chat client, small browser, or other app while watching content in full-screen on the desktop. The problem with this is that full screen desktop applications will take over the entire screen, even if the desktop is snapped to only occupy 3/4th of the display. What I would like is some way to force "full screen" desktop apps to only cover the snapped desktop area, and to truly go full screen if the desktop is snapped to full-width. Is there some way to configure this?   • Searching For a Desktop Security Software to harden Windows machines, anybody?

    I'm a network administrator of a small/medium network. I'm looking for a software (Free or Not) which can harden Windows Computers (XP And Win7) for the propose of hardening standalone desktop computers (not in domain network). Note: The computers are completely isolated (standalone), so i can't use active directory group policy. moreover, there are too many restriction that i need to apply, so it is not particle to set it up manual (one by one). Basically what I’m looking for is a software that can restrict and disable access for specific user accounts on the system. For Example: User john can only open one application and nothing else -- He don’t see no icon on the desktop or start menu, except for one or two applications which i want to allow. He can't Right click on the desktop, the task-bar icons are not shown, there is no folder options, etc... User marry can open a specific application and copy data to one folder on D drive. User Dan, have access to all drives but cannot install software, and so on... So far ,I've found only the following solutions, but they all seems to miss one or more feature: Desktop restriction Software 1. Faronics WINSelect The application seems to answer most of our needs except one feature which is very important to us but seems to be missing from WINSelect, which is "restriction per profile". WINSelect only allow to set up restrictions which are applied system-wide. If I have multiple user accounts on the system and want to apply different restrictions for each user, I cant. Deskman (No Restriction per user)- Same thing, no restriction per profile. Desktop Security Rx - not relevant, No Win7 Support. The only software that I've found which is offering a restriction per profile is " 1st Security Agent ". but its GUI is very complicated and not very intuitive. It's worth to mention that I'm not looking for "Internet Kiosk software" although they share some features with the one I need. All I need is a software (like http://www.faronics.com/standard/winselect/) that is offering a way to restrict Windows user interface. So if anybody know an Hardening software which allows to set-up user restrictions on Windows systems, It will be a big, big, big help for me! Thanks to you all
