    I have recently upgraded to Precise and had some errors. It seems to be quite random and with differences in the error reports. I have duly sent the reports hoping the system will have found the problem and sorted itself out. After the second error I am following the wizards (software...) advice and seeking help. The 1st time it happened I jotted down the following: ExecutablePath /usr/lib/tracker/tracker-extract LaunchPad bug 950765 AMD64 The second time the following: ExecutablePath /usr/share/appart/appart-gpu-error-intel.py "Possible GPU hang........" sandybridge-m-gt2 LaunchPad bug 981261 If there is anyone that can help it is much appreciated. I did not really want to upgrade at this stage, but was forced to due to the latest version of python-numpy in precise. You win some, you loose some....     Possible Duplicate: How do I upgrade to the development release (aka. Ubuntu+1)? I was suggested these commands when I searched for it on Google: sudo sed -i 's/precise/quantal/g' /etc/apt/sources.list sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade But, I don't know whether that works or not. So my question is: How to upgrade 12.04 to the 12.10 daily build? How to rollback to 12.04 if the daily build breaks? You might ask me why I want to try something like that... it's probably because I want to check out all the new upgrades that have been done in quantal. Another bonus question: If I select the "precise-proposed" updates in Update Manager, how close will my 12.04 come off to the 12.10? Are these precise proposed updates same as "quantal-proposed"? What are the differences?

    Endianess always comes up when migrating applications and databases from RISC to x86. The issue is often time overblown as if you are running on a relational database the database vendor will provide tools or automated methods to convert the data properly. Oracle RMAN is often the first choice. Oracle imp/exp, data pump, and GoldenGate can also be used. Migrating to Linux on Dell A bigger issue would be applications that access OS files. These OS files will need to be converted from big endian (RISC) to little endian (CISC) and then the application may be impacted because of the endianess differences.

  • Where can I get the 11.04 kernel .config file?

    I'm using Maverick with the latest available kernels on kernel.org and building them myself. Until now I've been basing my configuration off the stock Maverick kernel and accepting the make oldconfig defaults. I've been doing this for 3 major releases now so I figure I'm starting to slip behind the current "standard". I would like to re-base my kernels off the new Natty .config file. Is this available somewhere online or do I have to download the whole kernel package and extract it? Edit: I've manually pulled in the config from the latest Natty kernel package and I can confirm that I propbably should have done this sooner. A lot of differences between my old "evolved" config and the Natty default. Now if I could just do this without 20 minutes of hunting and downloading the package so I can re-base in the future.

I need different version of web.config (among other config files) for different branches (due to the environment that we're releasing the web application to). (for example - i don't want to merge the web.config file all the time even though there are differences ...) Is there a good way to keep track of that (instead of manually diff-ing the files)? thanks!

  • Toshiba laptop overheats and switches off

    Since upgrading to 11.10 from 11.04 my laptop rapidly heats up and eventually turns off by itself (due to the intense heat I presume). This was not happening whilst running 11.04; I opted then to run gnome rather then unity, not sure if this makes a differences. Was hoping to solve this problem as it worries me that this continues to happen. if anyone can help me, or i need to provide more information on my system please provide step by step instructions on how to do this as I am still a beginner to the linux platform.

I do love python (after having done some rather simple scripting in Perl for a couple of years) for it's clearness and straightforwardness. Of course there is still room for improvement and topics I haven't touched yet. Still: I feel quite confident about my skills by now but want to keep learning. I thought it might be helpful to dive into another language to learn about differences, advantages and disadvantages of one over the other etc.

After years of operation I figured out that all the while what I was doing was a software engineer's job. There are several questions in my mind that I want to ask from you guys. I know that answers will be subjective. As a software engineer, do you really need to be a seasoned programmer? Is it true that software engineers don't code but just make diagrams, functional specs. and othe related documents? I also noticed that there are no SE standards or board exams to pass and its really a dynamic and situational job. NSString * text1=[[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%.2f",ymax] UTF8String]; This line complains that error: cannot convert 'const char*' to 'NSString*' in initialization The second error related to the first is from the line: CGContextShowTextAtPoint(context, 2, 8, text1, strlen(text1)); It complains that error: cannot convert 'NSString*' to 'const char*' for argument '1' to 'size_t strlen(const char*)' Is there something I missed in the differences between ObjC and ObjC++?

    Does anyone know of a diff viewer or comparison program that can do paragraph-based differentials? My repos has a large number of LaTeX files that are formatted into 80-character wide paragraphs (for easy editing with vim). It's currently very difficult to interpret the diffs between various versions, because any edit that caused the position of the line breaks to change results in a lot of spurious differences that show up in the diff.
