• Scaling Scrum within a group of 100s of programmers

  Most Scrum teams lean toward 7-15 people **, though it's not clear how to scale Scrum among 100s of people, or how the effectiveness of a given team might be compared to another team within the group; meaning beyond just breaking the group into Scrum teams of 7-15 people, it's unclear how efforts between the teams are managed, compared, etc. Any suggestions related to either of these topics, or additional related topics that might be of more importance to account for in planning a large scale SCRUM grouping? ** In reviewing research related to the suggested size of software development teams, which appears to be the basis for the suggested Scrum team size, I found what appears to be an error in the research which oddly appears to show that bigger teams (15+ ppl), not smaller teams (7 ppl) are better. UPDATE, "Re: Scrum doesn't scale": Made huge amounts of progress on personally researching the topic, but thought I'd respond to the general belief of some that Scrum doesn't scale by citing a quote from Succeeding with Agile by Mike Cohn : Scrum Does Scale: You have to admire the intellectual honesty of the earliest agile authors. They were all very careful to say that agile methodolgies like Scrum were for small projects. This conservatism wasn’t because agile or Scrum turned out to be unsuited for large projects but because they hadn’t used these processes on large projects and so were reluctant to advise their readers to do so. But, in the years since the Agile Manifesto and the books that came shortly before and after it, we have learned that the principles and practices of agile development can be scaled up and applied on large projects, albeit it with a considerable amount of overhead. Fortunately, if large organizations use the techniques described regarding the role of the product owner, working with a shared product backlog, being mindful of dependencies, coordinating work among teams, and cultivating communities of practice, they can successfully scale a Scrum project. • Conditional attribute in XML - most concise solution?

  I am tasked with setting up conditional profiling - a method of tagging chunks of XML with an attribute, which will then be used as a conditional value to extract subset of that XML. Have a look at another definition/example: DITA profiling The XML is documents that are equivalent to printed books - i.e. documents that are often looked at by a human, even if indirectly. Therefore I am looking at a few requirements here: 1. keeping the value list brief - so it doesn't affect the readability of the document 2. be able to process with standard XML tools - a space-separated list inside an attribute is still probably fine, but I'd rather not use too much regexp for this 3. be obvious for various users, including 3rd parties, which content goes where 4. Be easy to maintain going forward Therefore one easy solution is: The problem with this: 1. As the list grows the value of the attribute can be a bit verbose 2. One needs to explicitly state every value even if it's a scenario of this vs everything else Therefore I am also looking at other approaches such as: 1. Using + and - modifiers, Apache htaccess style to override the default cascading of profiling - by default all content goes everywhere and if we want to exclude a bit we just say "-kindle". It does require parsing the whole tree, is not supported by editing tools and one needs to regexp the attribute value a bit deeper... 2. Using an intermediate file to define groups of values such as "other" or "non-print", example of this in DITA. It allows concise XML as well as different grouping and values for each document but it does create a certain level of abstraction which may make it a little less obvious for a 3rd party? Altogether, if you received such XML and were tasked to process it, which option you'd rather receive? If you have any experiences like that, even in an unrelated areas such a builds, don't hesitate to comment!

• SQL Query for Determining SharePoint ACL Sizes

  When a SharePoint Access Control List (ACL) size exceeds more than 64kb for a particular URL, the contents under that URL become unsearchable due to limitations in the SharePoint search engine.  The error most often seen is The Parameter is Incorrect which really helps to pinpoint the problem (its difficult to convey extreme sarcasm here, please note that it is intended).  Exceeding this limit is not unheard of – it can happen when users brute force security into working by continually overriding inherited permissions and assigning user-level access to securable objects. Once you have this issue, determining where you need to focus to fix the problem can be difficult.  Fortunately, there is a query that you can run on a content database that can help identify the issue: SELECT [SiteId],      MIN([ScopeUrl]) AS URL,      SUM(DATALENGTH([Acl]))/1024 as AclSizeKB,      COUNT(*) AS AclEntries FROM [Perms] (NOLOCK) GROUP BY siteid ORDER BY AclSizeKB DESC This query results in a list of ACL sizes and entry counts on a site-by-site basis.  You can also remove grouping to see a more granular breakdown: SELECT [ScopeUrl] AS URL,       SUM(DATALENGTH([Acl]))/1024 as AclSizeKB,      COUNT(*) AS AclEntries FROM [Perms] (NOLOCK) GROUP BY ScopeUrl ORDER BY AclSizeKB DESC

• Column order can matter

  Ordinarily, column order of a SQL statement does not matter. Select a,b,c from table will produce the same execution plan as   Select c,b,a from table However, sometimes it can make a difference.   Consider this statement (maxdop is used to make a simpler plan and has no impact to the main point):   select SalesOrderID, CustomerID, OrderDate, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate asc) as RownAsc, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate Desc) as RownDesc from sales.SalesOrderHeader order by CustomerID,OrderDateoption(maxdop 1) If you look at the execution plan, you will see similar to this That is three sorts.  One for RownAsc,  one for RownDesc and the final one for the ‘Order by’ clause.  Sorting is an expensive operation and one that should be avoided if possible.  So with this in mind, it may come as some surprise that the optimizer does not re-order operations to group them together when the incoming data is in a similar (if not exactly the same) sorted sequence.  A simple change to swap the RownAsc and RownDesc columns to produce this statement : select SalesOrderID, CustomerID, OrderDate, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate Desc) as RownDesc , ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate asc) as RownAsc from Sales.SalesOrderHeader order by CustomerID,OrderDateoption(maxdop 1) Will result a different and more efficient query plan with one less sort. The optimizer, although unable to automatically re-order operations, HAS taken advantage of the data ordering if it is as required.  This is well worth taking advantage of if you have different sorting requirements in one statement. Try grouping the functions that require the same order together and save yourself a few extra sorts.

I need to be able to take a URL that starts with "\u002f[X]" or '\u002f[X]" Where X is the rest of some URL, and substitute the text "\u002fmeis2\u002f[X] I'm not sure how the Regex works in Apache -- I think it's the same as Perl 5? -- but even then I'm a little unsure how this would be done. My hunch is that it has to do with Regex grouping and then using $1 to pull the variable out, but I'm entirely unfamiliar with this process in Apache. Hoping someone can help -- thanks!

• Unit Tests as a learning tool - a good idea?

  I'm interested in ways and means for learning (a) programming language(s) efficiently. I believe that using Unit Test concepts and infrastructure early in that process is a good thing, even better than starting with "Hello world". Why: To write a decent program even for a toy/restricted problem in a new language, you'll have to master many heterogenous concepts (control flow & variables & IO ...), you are tempted to glance over details just to get your program 'to work'. Putting (your understanding of) the facts about the new language in assertions with good descriptions (=success messages) enforces thinking thru/clearness/precision. Grouping topics and adding assertions to such groups is much easier than incorporation features from the 2. chapter of your "Learning X" book to your chapter 1 program. Why not: 'Real' Unit Tests are meant to output "1234 tests ok; 1 failure: saveWorld() chokes on negative input"; 'didactic' Unit Tests should output relevant facts about the new language like perl6 10-string.t # ### p5chop ... ok 13 - p5chop( "cbä" ) returns "ä" ok 14 - after that, victim is changed to "cb" # ### (p6) chop ... ok 27 - (p6) chop( "cbä" ) returns chopped copy: "cb" ok 18 - after that, victim is unchanged: "cbä" # ### chomp ... So (mis?)using Unit Tests may be counterproductive - practicing actions while learning you wouldn't use professionally. • A new CAPTCHA using sentences?

  I was just thinking about how recaptcha is getting harder when I thought about another posible solution. Images won't last forever so we will need something else some day - like human logic or emotion. Google and others are trying grouping images by category (find the image that doesn't belong) but that requires a large amount of images and doesn't work for the blind. Anyway, what if a massive collection of text was gathered (public-domain books from each language) and a sentence was shown to the user with 1 (or 2) words that were a select box of choices? Only computers that knew correct English/Spanish/German grammar would be able to tell which of the words belonged in the sentence. Would there be any problems with this approach? I would assume that it would be easy enough for anyone that knew the language that the sentense was displayed in to figure out the answer easier than trying to read the reCAPTCHA text. Plus, storing an insane number of sentences would only take a couple gigabytes of space and wouldn't take anywhere near the CPU time creating images/audio takes. In other words, anyone could host their own captcha system with minimal impact on system performance. Is there a problem with this approach? • Set default expand/colapse state on pivot tables

  The Setup I have a pivot table in tabular form pulling data from an Analysis Services Cube. I want to calculate the number of days between two dates, but the setup will only allow me to pull in all date elements, not just the date. I’ve been able to deal with this easily enough by just grouping all the columns: The Problem The default state for the expand/collapse buttons in the image above is often collapsed, but that means the dates I need aren’t there and you have to open the group and manually expand them. This also happens in some random ways (as shown in the image) where only some rows expand. The Question I need a way to set these sections to always be expanded, so that the user never has to open the group to expand the rows. Ideally I’d like to avoid VBA because our end users often block it, but if that’s what’s needed then so be it. Is there a way to set my pivot table to never collapse it’s predefined groups? Note the end user is using Excel 2010

• Camera Collision inside the room model

  I am having a problem in Calculating the camera collision for my Room model which consists of sofa, tables and other models. The users shall be moving the camera front, back, rotating so i need to make sure that the camera does not collide with any of the models with in the room. I have treated all my models inside the room by BoundingBox[] and the camera by BoundingSphere. So, far i have implemented collision by looking into the tutorial from http://www.toymaker.info/Games/XNA/html/xna_model_collisions.html which was great. But, I guess the problem lies in the Transformation part. I debugged and found some points to be at Vector(-XXX,-XXX,-XXX) where X is digit. Also i found my radius of some models where too large(in thousand, i just looked into its radius value before converting to BoundingBox). Do I need to scale the model for collision??? • Is there a version of the Arial or Tahoma font with monospaced digits and spaces?

  The digits in the Arial font supplied with Windows are monospaced, in that they each take up the same horizontal space, but they seem to have neglected to provide a "monospaced" version of the space character. This means that you can't format a column of digits right-justified in (say) 12 spaces and have the right-hand edge be aligned. For example: 1 12 123 1234 12345 1234567 12345678 123456789 1234567890 works because the font used for code examples has spaces the same width as digits. This however doesn't work if the same text is displayed in Arial (I can't demonstrate because I can't figure out how to defeat SU's reformatting at the moment!). It just so happens that with Tahoma 8 point you can cheat because a space is exactly half the number of pixels as a digit, but that is messy and very specific.

• SQL SERVER – Excel Losing Decimal Values When Value Pasted from SSMS ResultSet

  No! It is not a SQL Server Issue or SSMS issue. It is how things work. There is a simple trick to resolve this issue. It is very common when users are coping the resultset to Excel, the floating point or decimals are missed. The solution is very much simple and it requires a small adjustment in the Excel. By default Excel is very smart and when it detects the value which is getting pasted is numeric it changes the column format to accommodate that. Now as Zero which are training any digit after decimal points have no value, Excel automatically hides it. To prevent this to happen user has to convert columns to text format so it can preserve the formatting. Here is how you can do it. Select the corner between A and 1 and Right Click on it. It will select complete spreadsheet. If you want to change the format of any column you can select an individual column the same way. In the menu Click on Format Cells… It will bring up the following menu. Here by default the selected column will be General, change that to Text. It will change the format of all the cells to Text. Now once again paste the values from SSMS to the Excel. This time it will preserve the decimal values from SSMS. Solved! Any other trick you do you know to preserve the decimal values? • Is there a command line two-factor authentication verification code generator?

  I manage a server with two-factor authentication. I have to use the Google Authenticator iPhone app to get the 6-digit verification code to enter after entering the normal server password. The setup is described here: http://www.mnxsolutions.com/security/two-factor-ssh-with-google-authenticator.html I would like a way to get the verification code using just my laptop and not from my iphone. There must be a way to seed a command line app that generates these verification codes and gives you the code for the current 30-second window. Is there a program that can do this?

• The Differences between MAC Address and Network Layer Address

  A Mac address is a fixed number associated with a NICs onboard memory. It is initially assigned at the factory. The MAC address is broken up into 2 parts. The first part is the Block id which is six digit sequences that is unique to each vender. The second section is the device id which is created and assigned by the manufacture. A Network layer address is different because there format based on the type of protocol and network used. Also, there unique id is based on a hierarchal addressing theme on subsets of data  and narrowing it down. Just like in an address you can narrow down your house, for example: Florida, Boca Raton, 33428, SW 53th street states that you live in Florida. You also live in the area located in Florida called Boca Raton and you are also in the area of 33428 which is located in Boca Raton. Finally you live on SW 8th street which is in the area of 33428 which is located in Boca Raton which is also located in Florida.

• How do I adjust the origin of rotation for a group of sprites?

  I am currently grouping sprites together, then applying a rotation transformation on draw: private void UpdateMatrix(ref Vector2 origin, float radians) { Vector3 matrixorigin = new Vector3(origin, 0); _rotationMatrix = Matrix.CreateTranslation(-matrixorigin) * Matrix.CreateRotationZ(radians) * Matrix.CreateTranslation(matrixorigin); } Where the origin is the Centermost point of my group of sprites. I apply this transformation to each sprite in the group. My problem is that when I adjust the point of origin, my entire sprite group will re-position itself on screen. How could I differentiate the point of rotation used in the transformation, from the position of the sprite group? Is there a better way of creating this transformation matrix? Does anyone know of a better way to rotate a group of sprites in XNA? I need a method that will allow me to modify the point of rotation (origin) without affecting the position of the sprite group on screen.

• How to authenticate users in nested groups in Apache LDAP?

  I've working LDAP authentication with the following setup AuthName "whatever" AuthType Basic AuthBasicProvider ldap AuthLDAPUrl "ldap://server/OU=SBSUsers,OU=Users,OU=MyBusiness,DC=company,DC=local?sAMAccountName?sub?(objectClass=*)" Require ldap-group CN=MySpecificGroup,OU=Security Groups,OU=MyBusiness,DC=company,DC=local This works, however I've to put all users I want to authenticate into MySpecificGroup. But on LDAP server I've configured that MySpecificGroup also contains the group MyOtherGroup with another list of users. But those users in MyOtherGroup are not authenticated, I've to manually add them all to MySpecificGroup and basically can't use the nested grouping. I'm using Windows SBS 2003. Is there a way to configure Apache LDAP to do this? Or is there a problem with possible infinite recursion and thus not allowed?

We can use wireshark or other programs to sniff all the packets. By grouping all the secondary connections with the primary one, then we would be able to get a much easier picture of user's primary activities. Is this talking about being able to recognize which websites each of the laptops are connecting to?

• Anonymouse VS Logged in users on my site & Google Analytics

  I'd like to be able to run two different 'tracks' for Google Analytics; One for anonymous users of the site and another for Users whom are logged-in. I say "track" because Im not sure of the term--but I definitely know I want it to all be in the same "Analytics Account", I just want to segregate my logged-in users... In the site template, I can very easily add a conditional to display one or the other (Analytics code snippet)... Which Im hoping this comes down to and although Im not sure, it seems that the last digit in your Analytics ID (e.g. UA-15XXXX0-X) could be incremented to gain such additional 'tracks'....? Any tips?
